The Memory Unit Of A Digital Computer, Bobby Ridgell Jan 1966

The Memory Unit Of A Digital Computer, Bobby Ridgell

Honors Theses

Since the development of the first modern digital computer in August 1944, the digital computer has become one of the most essential machines of the modern day. According to Edmund Berkeley and Lawrence Wainwright it is one of the two events by which the twentieth century will be remembered. This development has also led to what has been called the Second Industrial Revolution. That so much importance should be placed on one development is extraordinary, but the far reaching effects of the digital computer are also extraordinary.

Observation Of Doppler-Shifted Peaks In The Energy Spectrum Of Autoionizatioin Electrons From Ar+ -Ar Collisions, M. Eugene Rudd, T. Jorgensen, Jr., D. J. Volz Jan 1966

Observation Of Doppler-Shifted Peaks In The Energy Spectrum Of Autoionizatioin Electrons From Ar+ -Ar Collisions, M. Eugene Rudd, T. Jorgensen, Jr., D. J. Volz

M. Eugene Rudd Publications

It is well known that when heavy ions traverse gas, electron pickup into excited states occurs. If the fast excited atom subsequently decays by radiating a photon, the energy of the photon will be Doppler shifted due to the motion of the source. This effect may be used to distinguish the radiation from stationary and moving atoms. For example, this method was used by Meinel to deduce the motion of solar protons streaming downward through the earth's atmosphere.
If instead the moving atom decays by autoionization, the ejected electron should also show a shift in energy analogous to the Doppler …

Jurassic Stratigraphy Of The Southern Two-Thirds Of North Dakota, Richard A. Salisbury Jan 1966

Jurassic Stratigraphy Of The Southern Two-Thirds Of North Dakota, Richard A. Salisbury

Theses and Dissertations

Jurassic rocks in the southern two-thirds of North Dakota consist mainly of limestone, shale, anhydrite, and salt of the Piper Formation; shaly limestone, calcareous and non-calcareous shales of the Rierden Formation; shale and sandstone of the Swift Formation; and, at the top, non-marine shale and local sandstones of the Morrison Formation.

The units generally are conformable in the deep part of the Williston Basin, and are unconformable near the edge of the basin in eastern North Dakota. The Poe Member of the Piper Formation, however, unconformably overlies the Spearfish Formation in the western part of North Dakota where Dunham salt …

Stable Predictor-Corrector Methods For First Order Ordinary Differential Equations, Terrell Lester Carlson Jan 1966

Stable Predictor-Corrector Methods For First Order Ordinary Differential Equations, Terrell Lester Carlson

Masters Theses

"Because of the wide variety of differential equations, there seems to be no numerical method which will affect the solution best for all problems. Predictor-corrector methods have been developed which utilize more ordinates in the predictor and corrector equations in the search for a better method.

These methods are compared for stability and convergence with the well known methods of Milne, Adams, and Hamming"--Abstract, page ii.

The Activity Of Succinic Dehydrogenase And Indole Acetic Acid Oxidase In Cell-Free Preparations Of Hygrophorous Conicus, Jagdish M. Mehta Jan 1966

The Activity Of Succinic Dehydrogenase And Indole Acetic Acid Oxidase In Cell-Free Preparations Of Hygrophorous Conicus, Jagdish M. Mehta

Masters Theses

"The enzyme indole acetic acid oxidase is produced by the fungus Hygrophorous conicus when it is grown in the presence of indole acetic acid (IAA) or tryptamine. The IAA acts both as an inducer and a substrate for this intracellular enzyme. The product of the oxidation catalyzed by the IAA oxidase is oxindole acetic acid (OIAA).

The rate of growth and the rate of formation of the enzyme IAA oxidase by H.conicus were studied in different media. Of these, a nitrate medium containing 0.5 per cent Yeast extract (Y.E.) was found to be the best for the production of H.conicus …

The Mössbauer Effect In Bismuth Ferrate, Bruce A. Banks Jan 1966

The Mössbauer Effect In Bismuth Ferrate, Bruce A. Banks

Masters Theses

"The magnetic hyperfine structure of the Fe⁵⁷ nuclei in bismuth ferrate was investigated using the Mössbauer effect. A Mössbauer effect spectrometer was built with consideration given to the elimination of vibration and the optimizing of the source, absorber, and detector geometries to produce the largest fractional Mössbauer effect per fractional standard deviation. The internal magnetic field at the Fe nuclei in BiFeO₃ was determined to (482 ± 9) kilooersteds at room temperature"--Abstract, page ii.

Heat Flow In The Boss Deposit Of Missouri, Don Stainbrook Jan 1966

Heat Flow In The Boss Deposit Of Missouri, Don Stainbrook

Masters Theses

"Values of heat flow through a Precambrian mineral deposit were determined in the Boss area of Missouri, where 350 meters of Paleozoic sedimentary rocks overlie a complex series of rhyolite flows which have been altered and contain a copper bearing magnetite deposit. Geothermal data were obtained from a closely spaced grid of 17 diamond drill holes penetrating to depths of 1000 meters below ground surface. Temperature measurements were made at 5 meter intervals in the Precambrian section of all holes. These and thermal conductivity measurements made on representative core samples from 300 to 400 meters below the top of the …

Structure Contours On The Top And Base Of The M Bed, The Relationship Of Mineralization To Structures, And The Variation Of The M Bed Thickness In The Tri-State District, Missouri, Kansas And Oklahoma, Arvind A. Desai

Masters Theses

"Regional structure and thickness of a single horizon, the M bed, have been studied in the Tri-State district by picking the top and base of the M bed in the logs of 557 selected drill holes and contouring this data together with the aid of local detailed structural information available for individual mining fields. Structures determined from these data were compared to the positions of mined mineralization to determine the control of regional structure upon the localization of ore. Variations in the M bed thickness were compared to the positions of fields of mineralization to examine possible spatial relationships which …

Tectonic Analysis Of Mare Humorum On The Lunar Surface, Adnan Said Abul-Husn Jan 1966

Tectonic Analysis Of Mare Humorum On The Lunar Surface, Adnan Said Abul-Husn

Masters Theses

"Morphology and internal structures of surface features of the Mare Humorum area were interpreted from photographs and topographic maps. The postulated origin of certain features is based on analog comparisons with known terrestrial features. The laws of crate ring and a newly developed computer program were applied to two representative classes of craters to determine the possibility of a meteoritic impact origin. Some of the craters formed by meteoritic impact and others, including those with a radius larger than 10 Km, probably resulted from volcanic activity.

Mare Humorum formed from centripetal subsidence followed by extensive lava eruptions. Spacially related rilles …

A Mathematical Study Of Voigt Viscoelastic Love Wave Propagation, David Nuse Peacock

Masters Theses

"This research is a mathematical investigation of the propagation of a Love wave in a Voigt viscoelastic medium. A solution to the partial differential equation of motion is assumed and is shown to satisfy the three necessary boundary conditions. Velocity restrictions on the wave and the media are developed and are shown to be of the same form as those governing the elastic Love wave"--Abstract, page ii.

Comparative Analysis Of Numerical Integration Techniques, Edward Lee Sartore Jan 1966

Comparative Analysis Of Numerical Integration Techniques, Edward Lee Sartore

Masters Theses

"When integrating numerically, if the integrand can be expressed exactly as a polynomial of degree n, over a finite interval; then either Simpson's rule, Romberg integration, Legendre-Gauss or Jacobi-Gauss quadrature formulas provide good results. However, if the integrand can not be expressed exactly as an nth degree polynomial, then perhaps it can be expressed as a function f(x) divided by √1-x 2, or as a function g(x) times (1-x)α (l+x)ß , where α and ß are some real numbers >1, or as a function h(x) times one. If this is the case then the Chebyshev-Gauss, Jacobi-Gauss, and …

Economic Analysis Of Alternative Flood Control Measures By Digital Computer, Thomas M. Rachford Jan 1966

Economic Analysis Of Alternative Flood Control Measures By Digital Computer, Thomas M. Rachford

KWRRI Research Reports

The purpose of this project was to develop a digital computer program for selecting the optimum combination of flood proofing, flood-plain land use, channel improvement, and residual flood damage for a given floodplain. Based on economic efficiency, the optimum policy is selected for each planning unit of the total flood-plain for each period of time called a planning stage. The program was written in Fortran IV for the IBM 7040 and the University of Kentucky Computing Center compiler. The program requires about 23,000 words of core storage and about 30 seconds of execution time per planning-unit-stage for typical conditions. The …
