Higher Plant Acclimation To Solar Ultraviolet-B Radiation, Ronald Robberecht
Higher Plant Acclimation To Solar Ultraviolet-B Radiation, Ronald Robberecht
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Plant acclimation to natural and intensified solar UV-B irradiance was investigated in three species, Oenothera stricta Ledeb., Rumex obtusifolius L., and R. patientia L. The objectives of this study were to determine: (1) the relationship between plant sensitivity and epidermal UV attenuation, (2) the effect of phenotypic changes in the leaf epidermis, resulting from UV-B exposure, on plant sensitivity to UV radiation, and (3) the plasticity of these changes in the epidermis leading to plant acclimation to UVB radiation.
Epidermal UV transmittance was found to differ in magnitude and spectral distribution among the three species examined in this study. Epidermal …
The Energy Expenditure Of Heifers Grazing Crested Wheatgrass Rangeland In West-Central Utah, Kris M. Havstad
The Energy Expenditure Of Heifers Grazing Crested Wheatgrass Rangeland In West-Central Utah, Kris M. Havstad
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The free-roaming ruminant requires energy for the demands of vii grazing, traveling and thermoregulation that are not required by its confined counterpart. Literature estimates of these additional costs range from 10 to 170 percent above maintenance. The uncertain magnitude of this increased demand and the factors that contribute to it impede the ability of the rangeland ruminant nutritionist to establish guidelines for the energy requirements of the free-roaming herbivore. This study was designed to estimate the energy expenditure of yearling Angus heifers while grazing a declining supply of available crested wheatgrass forage (Agropyron cristatum) on rangeland in west-central …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study was designed to accomplish two primary objectives: (1) to compare two test methods commonly used to evaluate toxicity of inhaled air pollutants, and (2) to observe the response as measured by each of the methods, of pulmonary alveolar macrophages exposed to 2μg hexavalent chromium.
The first method evaluated featured use of intratracheal injections to simulate live inhalation exposures, and the second required exposure of macrophages cultured on petri plates. Pulmonary alveolar macrophages harvested from Long Evans rats were used. The two cell function parameters measured in the evaluations were chemiluminescence and oxygen consumption (which was determined for cells …

Petrology Of The Arumbera Sandstone, Late Proterozoic(?) - Early Cambrian, Northeastern Amadeus Basin, Central Australia, Keith T. Conrad
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The Arumbera Sandstone forms distinctive strike ridges with dark reddish slopes and orange-white cliffs throughout most of the northeastern Amadeus Basin. It is divisible into four readily mappable informal units. The ridge-forming units, 2 and 4, are divided into three and two subunits, respectively.
Unit 1, Subunit 2b, Unit 3 and Subunit 4b are generally comprised of recessive, pale-red to grayish-red, medium- to thin-bedded, fineto medium-grained arkose with major proportions of siltstone and mudshale. These sedimentary bodies are interpreted as a complex system of coastal to nearshore-marine environments including tidal flats, tidal channels, estuaries and beaches. Evidence includes: (1) predominance …
Petrology Of The Middle Cambrian Blacksmith Formation, Southeastern Idaho And Northernmost Utah, David Paul Zelazek
Petrology Of The Middle Cambrian Blacksmith Formation, Southeastern Idaho And Northernmost Utah, David Paul Zelazek
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The Blacksmith Formation of Middle Cambrian (Albertan) age was studied in southeastern Idaho and northernmost Utah. Lithology and sedimentary structures were compared with modern environments and ancient rocks to determine environments of deposition, paleo-geography, diagenetic alterations and patterns of dolomitization.
The Blacksmith Formation can be divided into five basic rock types. Rock type A has cryptalgalaminae, mudcracks, and lacks bioturbation. Rock type A is inferred to have been deposited in the upper intertidal to supratidal environment. Rock type B is extremely dolomitized and brecciated. It is inferred that rock type B was deposited in the upper intertidal to supratidal environment. …
Faunal Succession And Depositional Environments Within The Lodgepole Limestone (Early Mississippian) Of Samaria Mountain, Idaho, Gary Keith Hines
Faunal Succession And Depositional Environments Within The Lodgepole Limestone (Early Mississippian) Of Samaria Mountain, Idaho, Gary Keith Hines
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Community succession, the orderly changes a community experiences with time, is considered to be the result of either autogenic or allogenic factors working singularly or in combination. It has been further suggested that, as communities undergo succession, certain biological parameters change in a predictable manner. Examination of members 2 through 4 of the Mississippian (Kinderhook-Osage) Lodgepole Formation of Samaria Mountain, Idaho provides a means to evaluate these concepts.
Within the study section comprised of 125 beds (61.5 m thick), four rock types are recognized. These include: (1) fossiliferous wackestone (78% of beds), which ranges in color from dark-gray (N3) to …

Mechanism Of Two Homogeneous Reactions; Co Self Exchange And N2 Self Exchange, Alan L. Rockwood
Mechanism Of Two Homogeneous Reactions; Co Self Exchange And N2 Self Exchange, Alan L. Rockwood
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The two atom switching reactions referred to in the title were originally studied at temperatures greater than 2000°K in shock tubes by other investigators. For each reaction they proposed a direct four-center exchange mechanism in which one of the reactant molecules must be vibrationally excited, (the vibrational excitation mechanism or VEM). One of the predictions of the VEM is that molecules which are vibrationally hot but translationally cold should react through the four center transition state that leads to exchange.
Using a mercury photosensitization technique, it is shown in the present work that excitation of CO to high vibrational levels …
Periodic Solution For Nonlinear Delay Equation In Higher Order, Sen-Wo Du
Periodic Solution For Nonlinear Delay Equation In Higher Order, Sen-Wo Du
Mathematics Technical Papers
In recent years, the existence and uniqueness of 2n-period solution for (1.1) [see pdf for notation] where x E Rn, and e(t,u,v) is a given function with 2^-period in t, have been discussed in several papers [1],[2],[3],[4] by using the Fourier expansion and fixed point method. The delay case is first discussed by W. Layton [5]. Applying similar ideas, we extend the study of (1.1) for any positive integer j.

Linear Monotone Method For Nonlinear Boundary Value Problems In Banach Spaces, V. Lakshmikantham, Stephen R. Bernfeld
Linear Monotone Method For Nonlinear Boundary Value Problems In Banach Spaces, V. Lakshmikantham, Stephen R. Bernfeld
Mathematics Technical Papers
One of the most useful techniques in proving the existence of multiple solutions of nonlinear boundary value problems (BVP for short) is the monotone iterative method, which yields monotone sequences that converge to extremal solutions of the problem. Recently, because of applications, this technique has attracted much attention, see [1,3-7,11,12,14,15]. To explain this method, let us consider the scalar BVP (1.1) [see pdf for notation] where [see pdf for notation] and [see pdf for notation], I being the interval [0,1]. Suppose that [see pdf for notation] with [see pdf for notation] on I and (1.2) [see pdf for notation] Then …

Landsat Analysis Of The Dynamics Of The Chesapeake Bay Plume On The Continental Shelf, John C. Munday, Michael S. Fedosh
Landsat Analysis Of The Dynamics Of The Chesapeake Bay Plume On The Continental Shelf, John C. Munday, Michael S. Fedosh
Reports
The dynamics of the Chesapeake Bay plume have been studied by examination of 81 dates of Landsat images with color additive enhancement and single-band density slicing. The "plume" was interpreted from surface turbidity discontinuties as revealed in images from multispectral scanner (MSS) bands 4-7. Results show that the Chesapeake Bay plume usually frequents the Virginia coast south of the Bay mouth. Wind and tide vectors are the principal variables affecting the plume dynamics. Southwestern (compared to northern) winds spread and disperse the plume easterly over a large area. Ebb tide images (compared to flood tide images) show a more dispersed …

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
During the late 1960's and early 1970's several significant pieces of environmental legislation were enacted. These pieces of legislation were designed to restore, improve, preserve and protect our natural resources. The legislation with the most impact on the United State Navy and Naval vessels has been the Federal Water Pollution Control Act. In order to meet the statutory requirements of the Clean Water Act, the United States Navy had to embark on a program to: modify existing vessels with Marine Sanitation Devices (MSD's) and install such devices on new construction ships.

The Viability Of Imported Liquified Natural Gas As An Energy Resource, Richard L. Dick
The Viability Of Imported Liquified Natural Gas As An Energy Resource, Richard L. Dick
Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers
As the United States enters the 1980's, the need for secure and efficient energy sources is rapidly moving to the forefront of our foreign and domestic policies. It is apparent that our existence, as well as that of our allies, is closely tied to the ability to secure energy resources. The importation of Liquified Natural Gas (LNG), by specially designed ships, from oil exporting nations to energy consuming nations has been a highly touted energy resource. United States importation of LNG is not a cost effective energy resource due to: (1) dependence on foreign sources, (2) transportation costs including "hidden" …

Theory And Intuition, E. A. Mccullough Jr.
Theory And Intuition, E. A. Mccullough Jr.
Faculty Honor Lectures
Among the practitioners of science are people who are called theorists , and this lecture is concerned with the question, Just what is it that a theorist does?
If an experimentalist does experiments, then a theorist presumably does theories. What is a theory? My dictionary defines it as ". . . a system of assumptions, accepted principles, or rules of pro· cedure devised to analyze, predict or otherwise explain the nature or behavior of a specified set of phenomena."
Those who now understand perfectly what a theorist does may stop reading here because everything that follows will be superfluous. For …

(1) Gravid females representing fourteen species of marine snakes were collected from four localities along the coast of Malaysia in 1975. The average clutch size ranged from 2.9 to 17.8 but most species had between three and seven young. The number of young produced and the size of gravid Lapemis hardwickii differed significantly at two sites in the Straits of Malacca. Eight species showed a significantly positive relationship between the number of oviducal eggs and female weight. The rate of infertility among ten species ranged from 4.5 to 20%.
(2) Sex ratios in the collections varied significantly through time and …
Elm Trees And Elm Leaf Beetles: Patterns Of Herbivory, Cliff A. Lemen
Elm Trees And Elm Leaf Beetles: Patterns Of Herbivory, Cliff A. Lemen
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
The rate of attack on elm seedlings by the Elm Leaf Beetle is affected by the seedlings position relative to adult elms. Those seedlings directly under adult trees suffer 580 times the insect attack from the beetles as seedlings not directly under adult elms. Excluding seedlings under adult elms, the number of egg masses found on an elm plant is directly proportional to its size. It was found that below a certain size seedlings were completely free from beetle attack.
Fertilizing Soybeans, Monroe Rasnake
Fertilizing Soybeans, Monroe Rasnake
Soil Science News and Views
Soybeans need a fertile soil with a pH of about 6.4 for maximum production. This condition is best attained through a regular soil testing and fertilization program. A fertility program based on fertilizer and lime. use as determined by soil testing is more economical and more effective than applying large amounts of fertilizer at planting. Soil testing is the key.

Rare-Earth-Rich Metallic Glasses. I. Magnetic Hysteresis, George C. Hadjipanayis, David J. Sellmyer, B. Brandt
David Sellmyer Publications
An anomalous magnetic behavior has been observed in rare-earch-rich metallic glasses of the composition (R75Au25)100-xBx where R denotes Pr, Gd, Tb, Er and x=0,10. The observed hysteresis in all samples except Gd at liquid-helium temperatures is due to the large anisotropy which develops below the ordering temperature. High-field-magnetization measurements up to 220 kOe were used to determine the spontaneous magnetization and the magnetic anisotropy constant which was found to be of order 108 erg/cm3 for the Tb and Er glasses. These parameters were used together with the observed remanence ratio to …
Ionization By Low And Intermediate Energy Ion And Neutral Beams, M. Eugene Rudd
Ionization By Low And Intermediate Energy Ion And Neutral Beams, M. Eugene Rudd
M. Eugene Rudd Publications
One of the most important basic processes that take place in collisions of atomic systems is ionization resulting in the emission of electrons. A complete understanding of this process is complicated by the fact that electron emission can take place via a number of mechanisms, some of which are related. Simple measurements of the cross section for electron ejection as a function of projectile velocity does not usually provide enough information to unravel the various mechanisms. But cross sections which are differential in the angle and energy of the ejected electrons, which are now available for protons on a variety …
