Relationship Of The Turtle, Forest, And Park Rivers To The History Of Glacial Lake Agassiz, Samuel S. Harrison

Theses and Dissertations

The thesis here abstracted was written under the direction of Wilson M. Laird and approved by John R. Reid and Alan M. Cvancara as members of the examining committee, of which Dr. Laird was Chainnan.

During the summer of 1964 a study of the Turtle, Forest, and Park river valleys was undertaken to find evidence of former changes in river regimen. The regimen of rivers once draining into glacial Lake Agassiz was probably affected by changes in base level associated with fluctuations of that lake. The Turtle, Forest, and Park rivers, which presently flow eastward across the bed of Lake …

A Second Study Of Homogeneous Nucleation Of Water Vapor In Helium, Raymond J. Schmitt Jan 1965

A Second Study Of Homogeneous Nucleation Of Water Vapor In Helium, Raymond J. Schmitt

Masters Theses

"Absolute homogeneous nucleation rates in a supersaturated mixture of water vapor and helium are measured using a long sensitive time expansion chamber and a method devised by Kassner and Allard. A pulse technique is employed to produce the nucleation in an effort to suppress disturbing influences of vapor depletion and droplet growth. The time-varying nature of the supersaturation during the nucleation pulse is taken into account by an Integration over the pulse. Observed and theoretically predicted droplet concentrations are related by an assumed nucleation rate law which is adjusted until the total droplet populations predicted by integration of the assumed …

A Study Of Certain Conservative Sets For Parameters In The Linear Statistical Model, Roger Alan Chapin Jan 1965

A Study Of Certain Conservative Sets For Parameters In The Linear Statistical Model, Roger Alan Chapin

Masters Theses

"In the case of the linear statistical model, it has been shown that under certain conditions the confidence intervals obtained by considering the parameters one at a time are conservative when used as a joint confidence region, using the product of confidences as the confidence. However, nothing had been known of how conservative they are. This research provides accurate estimates of the true confidence for these cases.

Also, it has not yet been proved that they are indeed conservative for all cases. It is thought that they are, and the results of this research support this conjecture"--Abstract, page ii.

A Terrain Study Of The Bloodland Quadrangle, Pulaski County, Missouri, Lawrence E. Mullins

Masters Theses

"This study is an investigation of the environmental conditions which affect cross country movement for tracked military vehicles on a major portion of the Fort Leonard Wood Military Reservation.

The terrain has been mapped from the trafficability standpoint by an investigation of the geology, topography, pedology and restrictive vegetation characteristics of the Bloodland seven and one-half minute quadrangle. The terrain analysis was accomplished by a combination of map study, laboratory investigation, photo interpretation, and direct field study of representative soil and vegetation types. The conclusions of this analysis are presented in the form of a cross country movement map"--Abstract, page …

Linear And Quadratic Programming With More Than One Objective Function, William John Lodholz Jan 1965

Linear And Quadratic Programming With More Than One Objective Function, William John Lodholz

Masters Theses

"A computational procedure is presented for determining optimal solutions to the linear and quadratic programming problem when there is more than one objective function subject to linear constraints. In general a unique solution does not exist and a set of "best" or "efficient" points is determined and presented in graphical or tabular form. To solve the mathematical programming problems the simplex method is used for linear objective functions and Wolfe's method is used for quadratic objective functions"--Abstract, page ii.

Tschebyscheff Fitting With Polynomials And Nonlinear Functions, George F. Luffel Jan 1965

Tschebyscheff Fitting With Polynomials And Nonlinear Functions, George F. Luffel

Masters Theses

"It is the purpose of this study to survey the properties of the Tschebyscheff polynomials with particular reference to how they are employed as approximants and interpolants. The survey is extended to include the process known as "Tschebyscheff Approximation" or "Tschebyscheff Fitting" of a function by functions other than polynomials. One such fitting technique which will be of particular interest in this study is that of fitting f(x) by the function abx + c where a, b, c are real and b ≠ 1. In addition to a survey of the properties of the Tschebyscheff polynomials and of Tschebyscheff …

The highway cuts expose complete sections of the Warsaw and Salem formations, and the lower part …

Stereochemistry Of Chlorinated Diels-Alder Adducts, Harry R. Musser Jan 1965

Stereochemistry Of Chlorinated Diels-Alder Adducts, Harry R. Musser

Masters Theses

"Hexachlorocyclopentadiene and related compounds have been studied extensively in connection with Diels-Alder reactions. Many of the adducts formed are used as intermediates in insecticide syntheses. It is of interest to study the stereochemistry of the adducts of one of the hexachlorocyclopentadiene derivaites. 5,5-Dimethoxy-1,2,3,4-tetrachlorocyclopentadiene and various dienophiles, when allowed to react, yield compounds of the bridges bicyclo [2.2.1] hept-2-ene series. The study of the endo and/or exo configuration of various functional groups such as carboxyl, aldehyde, and hydroxymethyl can be related to the known exo-5-hydroxymethyl1-1,2,3,4-tetrachlorobicyclo-[2.2.1] help-2-ene-7-one"--Introduction, page [1].

Information retrieval is one of the newest fields in computing science. Being so new there are many unexplored areas. The research that has been done has not been standardized beyond the point of the effort which has been slanted toward solving the "Library Problem" ... Several different information retrieval methods have been suggested and some research done on them to try and solve the "Library Problem". Of these methods …

Coprecipitation Of Metal Salts With Organic Coprecipitants, Omar E. El-Arini Jan 1965

Coprecipitation Of Metal Salts With Organic Coprecipitants, Omar E. El-Arini

Masters Theses

"Coprecipitation studies were carried out for the more insoluble salts of six common metals and five anion systems. Three metal sulfides, namely, CuS, CdS and NiS, were the only metal salts studied that indicated nearly complete coprecipitation with phenolphthalein as carrier precipitate. The same salts showed almost no coprecipitation with B-naphthol as carrier precipitate. Solvent extraction of CuS with chloroform showed no significant amount of extraction had taken place. The data obtained in this work did not disclose any relationship between the extent of coprecipitation and the solubility product constant of the salt present. The main difficulty encountered at this …

Masters Theses

"The Joplin area of Missouri, which includes the Duenweg-Oronogo belt, was a famous zinc and lead mining district. Many mines were abandoned after World War I and filled with water. These provide a large potential supply of ground water. Expansion of industries and population in the area since World War II has caused a demand for water. In 1964, the Ground Water Branch, Water Resources Division, of the United States Geological Survey began a project to study the surface and ground water resources of the area. As part of his work on this project, the author measured the piezometric level …

Comparison Of Methods To Select A Probability Model, Howard Lyndal Colburn Jan 1965

Comparison Of Methods To Select A Probability Model, Howard Lyndal Colburn

Masters Theses

"A comparison is made between the estimates of the parameters in a gamma distribution obtained by the method of moments with those obtained by a numerical approximation to the maximum likelihood estimates. The estimates obtained by the numerical approximation had a smaller mean squared error from the true value than the estimates obtained by the method of moments. Modifications to tests of fit are made in order to develop methods to select a distribution from a set of possible distributions for a population with an unknown distribution. These selection methods are compared in their ability to make correct selections. Although …

Maximum production occurred during the summer and winter periods. The summer pulse was dominated by the cyanophyte species: Microcystis aeruginosa, Anabaena spiroides, A. circinalis, and Aphanizomenon flosaquae. The dominants of the winter pulse were the diatoms Fragilaria crotomensis and Asterionella formosa, which formed separate peaks under an ice cover in December and January, respectively. The January development extended into March with the highest concentrations for the year Being reached at approximately …

The Distribution Of Phytoplankton Along A 140 Mile Transect In The Chesapeake Bay, Harold G. Marshall Jan 1965

The Distribution Of Phytoplankton Along A 140 Mile Transect In The Chesapeake Bay, Harold G. Marshall

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The composition of phytoplankton progressively changed in the surface samples taken between Norfolk, Virginia and Cambridge, Maryland. These was an inverse relationship between the numbers of phytoplankters and zooplankters in the transect samples. Vertical stratification of the plankton was studied at two 24-hr, stations at the Great Wicomlco and Patuxent Rivers. The vertical centers of zooplankton and phytoplankton populations fluctuated over the study period and evidence is given to support a grazing phenomenon. Large concentrations of nannoplankters were found in all the plankton samples taken and is attributed to the collection procedure using the Van Dorn sampler.
