Topological Groups, Nicolas Anthony Thireos May 1963

Topological Groups, Nicolas Anthony Thireos

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A topological group is an abstract group which is also a topological space and in which the group operation are continuous. In group theory the algebraic binary operation of passage to a limit is studied in a similar manner. The two fundamental mathematical concepts of binary operation and passage to a limit are united and interrelated in the concept of topological group.

The concept of topological groups arose from the study of continuous transformations. However, topological groups can be studied quite independently from continuous transformations and the latter can be presented as applications of topological groups. The first person to …

Anti-Associative Systems, Dick R. Rogers

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A set of elements with a binary operation is called a system, or, more explicitly, a mathematical system. [2] The following discussion will involve systems with only one operation. This operation will be denoted by "⋅" and will sometimes be referred to as a product.

Lithostratigraphy And Correlation Of The Mississippian System In Nebraska, Marvin P. Carlson May 1963

Lithostratigraphy And Correlation Of The Mississippian System In Nebraska, Marvin P. Carlson

Conservation and Survey Division

The purpose of this study is to describe and correlate rocks of Mississippian age within the state of Nebraska. Shales, generally classified as "Chattanooga" and commonly referred to as Devonian or Mississippian in the northern Mid-Continent, have been included in this study, although these shales are more generally believed to be Devonian and not Mississippian by most stratigraphers and paleontologists at the present time. Since rocks of Mississippian age are present only in the subsurface of Nebraska, the basic information for this report is derived from the microscopic study of cuttings and cores from test wells drilled within the state.

This confirmed work reported in the literature. Solid solutions in the region between 0.0000 and 0.4796 mole fraction of p-dioxane were found in the present study. The system, p-dioxane:chloroform, was found to contain a 1:2 complex with a congruent melting point of 215.65 °K. It was determined that no other complexes formed in the solid state. This information resolved contradicting reports in the literature. The system, p-dioxane:dichloromethane, was found to contain …

A Field Study Of Miscible Displacement In Saturated Soils, Lloyd Dowley Mcfadden Sadler May 1963

A Field Study Of Miscible Displacement In Saturated Soils, Lloyd Dowley Mcfadden Sadler

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Extensive research has been carried out in both field and laboratory to explain water and solute movement under both saturated and unsaturated conditions. The importance of such work is obvious, since any attempt at exploring land reclamation by leaching or nutrient movement in plant feeding (to name only two) is subject to interpretations and theories of moisture flow.

Water flow through soil during reclamation by leaching can be termed miscible displacement since soil water and leaching water do not have a distinct fluid-fluid interface and will physically mix. It is probable that miscible displacement investigations can contribute to an understanding …

Investigation Of The Properties Of The Iterations Of A Homeomorphism On A Metric Space, Murray B. Peterson, Jr. May 1963

Investigation Of The Properties Of The Iterations Of A Homeomorphism On A Metric Space, Murray B. Peterson, Jr.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Considerable study has been made concerning the properties of the iterations of a homeomorphism on a metric space. Much of this material is scattered throughout the literature and understood solely by a specialist. The main object of this paper is to put into readable form proofs of theorems found in G.T. Whyburn's "Analytic Topology" pertaining to this topic in topology. Properties of the decomposition space of point-orbits induced by the iterations of a homeomorphism will compose a major part of the study. Some theorems will be established through series of lemmas required to fill in much of the detail lacking …

An Investigation Of The Range Of A Boolean Function, Norman H. Eggert, Jr. May 1963

An Investigation Of The Range Of A Boolean Function, Norman H. Eggert, Jr.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this section is to define a boolean algebra and to determine some of the important properties of it.

A boolean algebra is a set B with two binary operations, join and meet, denoted by + and juxtaposition respectively, and a unary operation, complementation, denoted by ', which satisfy the following axioms:

(1) for all a,b ∑ B (that is, for all a,b elements of B) a + b = b + a and a b = b a, (the commutative laws),

(2) for all a,b,c ∑ B, a + b c =(a + b) (a + b) …

An Investigation Of The Properties Of Join Geometry, Louis John Giegerich Jr. May 1963

An Investigation Of The Properties Of Join Geometry, Louis John Giegerich Jr.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This paper presents a proof that the classical geometry as stated by Karol Borsuk [1] follows from the join geometry of Walter Prenowitz [2].

The approach taken is to assume the axioms of Prenowitz. Using these as the foundation, the theory of join geometry is then developed to include such ideas as 'convex set', 'linear set', the important concept of 'dimension', and finally the relation of 'betweenness'. The development is in the form of definitions with the important extensions given in the form of theorems.

With a firm foundation of theorems in the join geometry, the axioms of classical geometry …

Distress In Children Going To X-Ray, Ina Madge Longway May 1963

Distress In Children Going To X-Ray, Ina Madge Longway

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

It is commonly recognized that hospitalized children need psychological support and preparation for painful procedures. It is probable that little thought is given by hospital personnel to a similar preparation of the child for non-painful procedures. This study attempted to evaluate the distress incurred by children subjected to non-painful hospital procedures with little or no preparation. The procedure of x-ray was selected as being common and typical. The method used was the descriptive survey. The tools used were the taking of a series of six blood pressure readings per child, the administration of two forms of a short psychological test …

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to find the incidence of medication errors among a group of patients, sixty years of age and over, who were being treated in the outpatient department of a selected urban hospital; and to investigate the effect of certain selected factors on the errors found. It was also planned to compare findings from this study with one done by Schwartz et. al. in New York. The descriptive survey approach employing an interview guide was used.

Errors were classified as those of omission, self-medication, incorrect dosage, and errors in timing or sequence. Fifty-two per cent of …

Convolution Properties Of Distributions On Topological Groups., S. R. S. Varadhan Dr. Mar 1963

Convolution Properties Of Distributions On Topological Groups., S. R. S. Varadhan Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The collection of probability distributions on the real line which is a semigroup under the convolution operation and topological space under weak convergence has attracted, during the last quarter of a century, the attention of such great mathematicians as Khintchine, Kolmogorov, Bawly, Levy and others. Their results constitute a deep analysis of the factorization problems on the one hand and the asymptotic behavior of infinite convolutions on the other. However, a complete and systematic investigation of these problems is not available in considerable generality. The aim of the present thesis is to investigate the topological and algebraic properties and the …

Lattice Dynamics And Specific-Heat Data For Rocksalt-Structure Alkali Halides, Arnold Karo, John R. Hardy Mar 1963

Lattice Dynamics And Specific-Heat Data For Rocksalt-Structure Alkali Halides, Arnold Karo, John R. Hardy

John R. Hardy Papers

Vibrational distribution functions are derived for a number of rocksalt-structure alkali halides using a more refined treatment of the interionic forces than that provided by regarding them as rigid point charges. The dipole moment at any given ion site is calculated taking into account the contribution from the deformation of the electron distribution resulting from both polarization and overlap repulsion between nearest neighbors. In this way the dipole-dipole part of the Coulomb interaction is treated self-consistently.
Both room temperature and 0°K input parameters are used, and the derived specific-heat data are compared with experimental results. The over-all agreement with experiment …
