Management Model For Pine Voles: Preliminary Report, John F. Coyle, Alan R. Tipton Feb 1980

Management Model For Pine Voles: Preliminary Report, John F. Coyle, Alan R. Tipton

Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia

The use of computer models in scientific research has grown by leaps and bounds in the past decade. One of the primary reasons for this growth is the increased realization that computers and more specifically computer models, can be useful tools in synthe¬sizing large amounts of information and providing insight into problem areas of research and management.

Numerous books and papers have been written on the justification for modeling, the philosophy of modeling, and model development and utilization. Recent reviews of small mammal population models are given by Conley and Nichols (1978) and Stenseth (1977). This paper will not address …

An Experimental Monitoring And Advisory Service In Orchard Vole Control, Don W. Hayne, William T. Sullivan Jr.

Eastern Pine and Meadow Vole Symposia

The North Carolina integrated, pest and. orchard, management project (IPOMS) has moved, from the data-gathering phase into an experimental information delivery system. We present here for possible comment the •written directions for vole monitoring that we prepared, for use by the orchard, specialists who will implement the monitoring and advisory system.

IPOMS started, in 1976 as a joint effort of a number of subject matter departments under the North Carolina Agricultural Research Service. A brief description of this cooperative effort of horticulturists, entomologists, plant pathologists, economists, zoologists and soil and weed. scientists has been presented to this group (Hayne 1978). …

Four-Color And Hβ Photometry Of Stars In The Galactic Cluster Ngc 6087, Edward G. Schmidt Feb 1980

Four-Color And Hβ Photometry Of Stars In The Galactic Cluster Ngc 6087, Edward G. Schmidt

Edward Schmidt Publications

Four-color and Hβ photometry has been obtained for 16 stars in the open cluster NGC 6087. Based on this photometry the membership of these stars in the cluster is discussed. Using stars which appear to be members a color excess of E(b – y) = 0m.23 and a distance modulus of (V0Mv) = 9m.60 are derived. This distance modulus is about 0m.4 less than previous values and indicates a lower luminosity for the Cepheid member, S Nor, than is currently accepted.

An Environmental Study Of The Origin, Distribution, And Bioaccumulation Of Selenium In Kentucky And Barkley Lakes, B. E. Mcclellan, Kenneth J. Frazer Feb 1980

An Environmental Study Of The Origin, Distribution, And Bioaccumulation Of Selenium In Kentucky And Barkley Lakes, B. E. Mcclellan, Kenneth J. Frazer

KWRRI Research Reports

Many samples of water, bottom sediment, and fish were analyzed for toxic metal ion content. The samples were collected from several selected sites along Kentucky and Barkley Lakes as well as the Cumberland River and several sub-impoundments along these aquatic systems. Emphasis was placed on selenium, although several other metal ions were determined. The results showed that there are no serious pollution problems with As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Pb, Se, Sr, Zn, or Zr at any of the sites examined. Actually, none of the trace metals examined even come close to the EPA limits on fish, with the exception …

Normalizations Of Thermodynamic Properties And Some Implications For Graphical And Analytical Problems In Petrology, John B. Brady, James H. Stout Feb 1980

Normalizations Of Thermodynamic Properties And Some Implications For Graphical And Analytical Problems In Petrology, John B. Brady, James H. Stout

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

Petrologic problems may be analyzed using any of a variety of possible choices of units. Although gram-formula units (moles) are commonly used, other units of quantity arc more appropriate for many applications. Gram-atom units offer the numerical simplicity of gram-formula units and have the advantage of being conservative. A conservative unit of quantity is one for which the sum of the units of reactants equals the sum of the units of products in a chemical reaction. For many graphical problems, a conservative unit of quantity, such as gram-atom or mass units, should be used. Since gram-formula units are not conservative, …

Quasi-Solutions And Monotone Method For Systems Of Nonlinear Boundary Value Problems, A. S. Vatsala, V. Lakshmikantham Feb 1980

Quasi-Solutions And Monotone Method For Systems Of Nonlinear Boundary Value Problems, A. S. Vatsala, V. Lakshmikantham

Mathematics Technical Papers

In the study of comparison theorems, existence of extremal solutions and monotone iterative techniques for initial and boundary value problems of ordinary differential systems, it becomes necessary to impose a condition generally known as quasi-monotone property [1,3,5]. In systems which represent physical situations such as a model governing the combustion of a material, quasi-monotonicity is not satisfied, see [4]. However a kind of mixed monotone property holds. To deal with such situations the notion of quasi-solutions was systematically developed in [4]. In this paper, we investigate monotone iterative method for systems of nonlinear boundary value problems when the system possesses …

Quasi-Solutions, Vector Lyapunov Functions And Monotone Method, S. Leela, V. Lakshmikantham, M. N. Oguztoreli Feb 1980

Quasi-Solutions, Vector Lyapunov Functions And Monotone Method, S. Leela, V. Lakshmikantham, M. N. Oguztoreli

Mathematics Technical Papers

It is now well known that the method of vector Lyapunov functions provides an effective tool to investigate the properties of large scale interconnected dynamical and control systems. [3,4,5,11-15]. Several Lyapunov functions result in a natural way in the study of such systems by the decomposition and aggregation method [1-4,12-14]. However an unpleasant fact in this approach is the requirement of quasi-monotone property on the comparison system since comparison systems with a desired property like stability exist without satisfying quasi-monotone property. Also in the study of comparison theorems and extremal solutions for differential systems one usually imposes this quasi-monotone property. …

Embedding Discrete Flows On R In A Continuous Flow, P. L. Sharma, Troy L. Hicks Jan 1980

Embedding Discrete Flows On R In A Continuous Flow, P. L. Sharma, Troy L. Hicks

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The problem of determining when a given discrete flow on a topological space is embeddable in some continuous flow was mentioned by G. R. Sell ("Topological Dynamics and Ordinary Differential Equations," Van Nostrand, New York, 1971) in his book on topological dynamics. In this book, the theory of generalized dynamical systems is exploited in the qualitative study of differential equations. Even more complicated is the problem of simultaneously embedding two or more discrete flows in a single continuous flow. We examine both of these problems when the underlying topological space is the space R of the real numbers. © 1980.

An Empirical Bayes Approach To Polynomial Regression Under Order Restrictions, Leonard W. Deaton Jan 1980

An Empirical Bayes Approach To Polynomial Regression Under Order Restrictions, Leonard W. Deaton

Statistics

An unknown polynomial is to be estimated over a finite interval from N independent, normally distributed observations. A prior distribution is placed on the polynomial coefficients expressing the opinion that the coefficients decrease in absolute value as the degree of the corresponding terms increase. The data are used to estimate the parameters in the prior distribution of the coefficients. A Monte Carlo study is presented which compares the proposed method with the lack-of-fit procedure. This study indicates that the proposed method performs well in terms of minimizing a squared error loss as well as in yielding the correct degree of …

Asymptotic Numbers: Ii. Order Relation, Infinitesimals And Interval Topology, Todor D. Todorov Jan 1980

Asymptotic Numbers: Ii. Order Relation, Infinitesimals And Interval Topology, Todor D. Todorov

Mathematics

It has been shown in [8] that the set of asympototic numbers A is a system of generalized numbers including isomorphically the set of real numbers R, as well as the field of formal power (asymptotic) series. In the present paper, which is a continuation of [8], an order relation in A is introduced due to A turning out to be a totally-ordered set. The consistency between the order relation and the algebraic operations in A is investigated and in particular, it is shown that the inequalities in A can be added and multiplied as in the set of …

Asymptotic Numbers: I. Algebraic Properties, Todor D. Todorov

Mathematics

The set of asymptotic numbers A introduced in Refs. [1] and [3] is a system of generalized numbers including the system of real numbers R, as well as infinitely small (infinitesimals) and infinitely large numbers. The purpose of this paper is to study in detail the algebraic properties of A which are a little unusual, in a cenain sense, as compared with the known algebraic structures (rings. fields, etc.) This is necessary for the investigation of the class of asymptotic functions [2.4], which are on their part, generalized functions similar to the distributions of Schwartz but allowing the operation of …

Himalayan And Trans-Himalayan Glacier Fluctuations And The South Asian Monsoon Record, Paul Andrew Mayewski, Gerard P. Pregent, Peter A. Jeschke, Naseeruddin Ahmad

Earth Science Faculty Scholarship

Termini fluctuations for glaciers in the Himalayas and Trans-Himalayas are examined for the period AD 1850 to 1960. This period can be characterized as one of general retreat. Differentiation by geographic subdivision, however, reveals that Himalayan glaciers (best exemplified in Lahaul-Spiti, Kolahoi, Nanga Parbat, and Garwhal) show consistent retreat throughout the period, while Trans-Himalayan glaciers (best exemplified on the north side of the Karakoram and in Batura Mustagh and Rakaposhi-Haramosh) deviate from this pattern by displaying a major period of advance from AD 1890 to 1910. Although no apparent relationship exists between the magnitude of termini advances and glacier lengths, …
