The Kinetics Of The Exchange Of Chlorine Atoms Between Hydrogen Chloride And Benzyl Chlorides, Warren Bruce May 1962

The Kinetics Of The Exchange Of Chlorine Atoms Between Hydrogen Chloride And Benzyl Chlorides, Warren Bruce

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

The study of the rates of chemical reactions in solutions has received a great deal of attention, primarily because of the relative ease with which such investigations can be persued; however, the great number of publications can never obscure the truth that a rigorous treatment of molecular processes in solutions is not available. The approach to the problem has been through extensions of theories which have their origins in descriptions of gaseous systems, and, with few exceptions, these extensions are firmly grounded on the techniques of classical thermodynamics. Hopefully, future advances in the calculation of the partition functions of molecules …

A Study Of The Elastic Scattering Of 25-Mev He3 Ions From Various Nuclei, Dale D. Armstrong

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

The validity of the assumption of strong absorption as the basis for the description of the interaction of He3 ions and nuclei was not definitely established and probably cannot be established without the application of more sophisticated theories.

Crystal Habit Modification Of Sodium Chlorate, Michael R. Keegan May 1962

Crystal Habit Modification Of Sodium Chlorate, Michael R. Keegan

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

All single crystals have a particular habit or morphology. The crystal habit refers to the relative degree of development of crystallographic planes into surfaces which make up the external appearance of the single crystal.

In this paper, NaClO3 is used as a parent crystal. Its simple cubic habit is modified to tetrahedral by the use of impurities of SO4=, S2O3=, Cr2O7=, and NO3-. The degree of habit change is studied as a function of impurity concentration and temperature. The problem and phenomena are explained in terms of surface chemistry and thermodynamics.

Physico-Chemical Principles Of Sixteenth Century Metallurgy, Robert E. Johnson May 1962

Physico-Chemical Principles Of Sixteenth Century Metallurgy, Robert E. Johnson

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Following a review of sixteenth century metallurgical literature and a discussion of Gibbs free energy, this thesis discusses thermodynamic considerations of galena (PbS) reduction by iron from a lead assay of this period. The importance of fluxes in this assay is emphasized. The discussion covers both equilibrium and non-equilibrium conditions at 1100 degrees Celsius. Possible substitutes for iron are also covered.

Information from twenty-one small controlled lead assays is correlated with the thermodynamic discussion to determine the purpose of each constituent in the assay.

Origins Of Shock-Induced Luminescence In Quartz, William P. Brooks May 1962

Origins Of Shock-Induced Luminescence In Quartz, William P. Brooks

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

Alpha quartz is a piezoelectric material. As such, it will yield voltage under stress. When shocked with high explosive systems, the material is also luminescent. This luminescence is quite intense and can be recorded on normal films at submicrosecond exposure times.

The luminescence appears in various patterns determined both by the explosive system used and by the orientation of the quartz.

Fused quartz exhibits luminescence to a lesser degree. Since fused quartz is not piezoelectric, it is helpful in the determination of the origin of the luminescence in crystalline alpha quartz.

This study of the origin of the luminescence in …

Complexing Of Sugars And Polyhydroxy Alcohols With Molybdenum (Vi), Su Chin Kiang

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Molybdenum is very important in the life processes of both plants and animals. It acts as a catalyst in promoting and controlling many biological reactions in living cells, but exactly what it does and how it functions are not well understood. In the past because of the obvious complexity of the reactions concerned and the extremely minute quantities of molybdenum involved, its presence was long undetected. Lately, molybdenum has drawn special attention on account of its effects on metabolic processes, particularly of plants. In this regard, molybdenum has been shown to be present in four enzymes: nitrate reductase (JJ), xanthine …

Bear Lake And Its Future, William F. Sigler May 1962

Bear Lake And Its Future, William F. Sigler

Faculty Honor Lectures

Even in such a wide-ranging and eternally changing field as biology, a few statements about certain aspects can be made with a minimum likelihood of their being refuted. In this class are the following: No two lakes are identical. Any given lake is simultaneously many things to many people. A lake is never static. The influence of a lake reaches far beyond its shores.

Bear Lake, Utah-Idaho, can be used to good advantage to exemplify the truth of these statements. It defies meaningful comparison with other lakes unless a mass of detailed statistics is employed. To the fisherman and water …

An Investigation Of The Sintering Of Iron-Wire Compacts, George L. Vivian May 1962

An Investigation Of The Sintering Of Iron-Wire Compacts, George L. Vivian

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

A study of the sintering of iron has been made by observing the rate of bonding of iron wires wound on iron spools. The specimens were sintered at a constant temperature of 850c in vacuum furnaces capable of producing pressures of 10-5 to 10-4 mm of mercury, and the growth of the bond between wires was observed as a function of time.

It has been concluded that the volume-diffusion mechanism is strongly operating in the sintering of iron at 850c, but in an evacuated system, the evaporation-condensation mechanism also contributes to the sintering process.

The Effect Of Chelates On Phosphorus Availability And Mobility, Salah Ahmed Tahoun May 1962

The Effect Of Chelates On Phosphorus Availability And Mobility, Salah Ahmed Tahoun

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Soil-phosphorus relations and plant-phosphorus relations have attracted the interest of many investigators since Liebig introduced his famous theory about the importance of the mineral matters to the plant in 1840. It was soon realized that phosphorus nutrition was a problem not easily solved for two reasons. 1. The added phosphorus fertilizers, soon after soil application are converted by some reactions in the soil to complex compounds far less soluble, consequently less available to the plant. Conclusions about this process led to controversial debates until it was discovered that a general statement covering all soils was impossible since the reactions involved …

Relations Between Transpiration, Leaf Temperatures, And Some Environmental Factors, Ronald Kay Tew May 1962

Relations Between Transpiration, Leaf Temperatures, And Some Environmental Factors, Ronald Kay Tew

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Transpiration is the loss of water in vapor form from a plant. This is essentially the same process as evaporation except that it is modified by plant structure. Large quantities of water are removed from the soil, transferred through the conducting tissues of the plant, and dissipated into the air each day. As soon as the water is lost to the atmosphere, it becomes unavailable for human use.

Stress-Corrosion Cracking Of Brass, Paul A. Fossey May 1962

Stress-Corrosion Cracking Of Brass, Paul A. Fossey

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

the mechanism of stress-corrosion cracking of brass has been sought for many years. Investigators have proposed many mechanisms, but each of these mechanisms has always had several drawbacks. This paper presents an account of experimental work done in the laboratory on this subject and compares it to the work of previous investigations. It evaluates the mechanisms presented by investigators and shows the failures of these mechanisms. A theory of Nitrogen Embrittlement is presented and an evaluation of this theory with experimental work follows.

An Investigation Of Coulometric Methods Of Analysis Of 1,1-Dimethylhydrazine, David M. Creighton May 1962

An Investigation Of Coulometric Methods Of Analysis Of 1,1-Dimethylhydrazine, David M. Creighton

Theses and Dissertations

The oxidation of 1,1-dimethylhydrazine by bromine has been studied using a coulometric method of bromine generation, and a dual intermediate system of bromide and cupric ions in solution. The system allowed over-generation of bromine and back-titration by cupric ion. The results of the investigation showed that the mechanism of oxidation is not fixed, but is a function of the concentration of bromine in the solution at any time. Additional studies have been recommended, whereby the mechanisms of the reactions may be determined.

Molybdenum Chelates Of 8-Hydroxyquinoline-5-Sulfonic Acid, Ellis Ray Peterson May 1962

Molybdenum Chelates Of 8-Hydroxyquinoline-5-Sulfonic Acid, Ellis Ray Peterson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Man has had an intense interest in the role of enzymes in biological reactions for many years. The basic question -- how enzymes are able to function so efficiently -- remains as yet largely unanswered.

Only in recent years has it been discovered that molybdenum is essential for certain biological processes. For example, traces of molybdenum added to certain soils have resulted in spectacular plant growth (1). Four enzymes are known to contain molybdenum: nitrate reductase (2), hydrogenase (3), xanthine oxidase (4), and aldehyde oxidase (5). In each of these enzymes riboflavin is also present as the coenzyme FAD (flavin …

Some Contributions To The Theory Of Sampling., Pramod Kumar Pathak Dr. Apr 1962

Some Contributions To The Theory Of Sampling., Pramod Kumar Pathak Dr.

Doctoral Theses

The work Presented here had originated from a pioneering paper by Basu1 and is essentially an extension of his ideas to different problem in sample surveys. The whole word mainly consists in deriving estimators uniformly better than those usually adopted in with replacement schemes.in with replacement sampling schemes, the 'order-statistic' (distinct sample unite arranged in an ascending order of their unit-indices) forms a sufficient statistic. Therefore, if any estimator (e.g., say of the population man) does not depend on the 'order-statistic', it can be uniformly improved by the use of the Rao-blalckwell theorem. The author has not hesitated to use …

A Geometrically Characterized Reference Frame For The Study Of Cartan Hypersurfaces In N-Dimensional Projective Space, W. Dale Maness Apr 1962

A Geometrically Characterized Reference Frame For The Study Of Cartan Hypersurfaces In N-Dimensional Projective Space, W. Dale Maness

Journal of the Graduate Research Center

In the projective differential geometry of ordinary space a problem of fundamental importance is that of obtaining a covariantly determined reference frame for the definition of local point coordinates and associated power series developments for the equations of curves and surfaces. Much of the celebrated memoir [1] of G. M. Green was devoted to this problem for a surface or 2-dimensional Cartan variety. However, the complete geometric characterization of the reference frame used by Green was not completed until sixteen years later by Bell [2]. In this paper, an extension of Green's "relation R" is given for a linear (n-2)-space …

Mass Spectra Correlations And The Appearance Potentials Of The Major Tobacco Alkaloids, William Frederick Kuhn Apr 1962

Mass Spectra Correlations And The Appearance Potentials Of The Major Tobacco Alkaloids, William Frederick Kuhn

Master's Theses

The main objectives of this investigation were three fold: (1) to design and fabricate a heated inlet system for the mass spectrometer; (2) to obtain the mass spectra of the major tobacco alkaloids under normal operating conditions; and ( 3) to determine the ionization potentials of the alkaloids as well as the appearance potentials of some of the major fragment ions derived from the alkaloids.

The mass spectrometer is designed to analyze only materials in the vapor state . Since some materials do not exert sufficient vapor pressure at room temperature under reduced pressure to be analyzed directly, it is …
