The He3 + T Reactions., Darryl B. Smith Jun 1962

The He3 + T Reactions., Darryl B. Smith

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

The energy distribution of the alpha particles and of protons frim the He3+ t reactions have been measured for 1.9-Mev incident tritons at laboratory angles of 30° for alpha, and both 30° and 90° for protons. Absolute cross selections are obtained. The spectra are discussed in terms of a model which assumes that uncorrelated three-body breakup and several two-stage processes all contribute independently to the cross section. The calculations based on this model are in excellent agreement with the observed spectral shapes. The neutron-proton correlation corresponding to the unbound singlet state of the deuteron is observed. The binding energy of …

A board-range spectrograph employing a 30-inch nuclear-track plate has been constructed an employed in the conjunction with the Van de Graaff. The construction and operation of the spectrograph are described.

Preliminary results from scanning and exposed nuclear plates gives evidence for the ground …

Multiple Scattering Of High Energy Electrons In A Cerenkov Counter, John Rehnberg Jun 1962

Multiple Scattering Of High Energy Electrons In A Cerenkov Counter, John Rehnberg

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

The purpose of this thesis is to present a procedure for calculating the fraction of high energy electrons incident on a Cerenkov counter which are scattered out of the region of detection.

With the assistance of Professor Christopher P. Leavitt of the University of New Mexico, a method of solving the above problem has been established. The method uses the theory of multiple scattering as described by Rossi and Greisen and a numerical integration technique to evaluate the effective or average scattering distribution function for the Cerenkov counter. A relationship is developed which can be programmed on a Bendix G-15 …

The Determination Of Thermal Neutron Density From The Absolute Measurement Of The Activity Induced In Gold Foils, Munson M. Thorpe

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

The interaction of thermal neutrons with a coin shaped detector is discussed in terms of the reaction rate in an infinite sheet of pure absorber irradiated in a void by an isotropic, Maxwell distribution of thermal neutrons. A coincidence method for the evaluation of the decay rate of the neutron induced activity in gold is examined in detail and utilized to measure the relative specific activity of gold foils exposed to neutrons in the graphite thermal column of the Water Boiler Reactor. The relative specific activity was obtained for 3/4" and 1/4" diameter foils as a function of thickness for …

A Spectroscopic Study Of Some Rare Earth Complexes, Richard M. Alire Jun 1962

A Spectroscopic Study Of Some Rare Earth Complexes, Richard M. Alire

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

The phenomenon of intramolecular energy transfer was studied using anthranilate, 8-hydroxyquinolate, 2-methyl-8-hydroxyquinolate, and salicylaldehyde rare earth chelates. Line emission characteristic of the rare earth ion was observed whenever the lowest triplet (measured) of the complex was higher in energy than the emitting (resonance) level of the rare earth trivalent ion. The path of energy transfer from the organic portion of the chelate to the rare earth ion was verified as going via the lowest or a nearby triplet state of the complex.

The Synthesis And Analysis Of Kau(Cn)4.3/2 H2o And Its Proposed Separation From Kau(Cn)2.2h2o, George Edgar Hartwell Jun 1962

The Synthesis And Analysis Of Kau(Cn)4.3/2 H2o And Its Proposed Separation From Kau(Cn)2.2h2o, George Edgar Hartwell

Honors Theses

The increasing use of radioactive tracers in chemistry has lead to many investigations of the rate of exchange between two different oxidation states of a single element in solution. These studies lead to a more basic understanding of the structure of certain ions and their chemical reactions. Other methods of identification open for investigation include polarography and the use of conductance measurements, since the equivalence conductances differ significantly.

Studies In Photoexcited Ketone Systems, Robert Michele Heimlich Jun 1962

Studies In Photoexcited Ketone Systems, Robert Michele Heimlich

Honors Theses

The photochemical reduction of benzophenone to benzopinacol has been known since the early part of this century when it was first discovered by Ciamician and Silber (4). The reaction is used today as a convenient preparation of benzopinacol. Benzophenone dissolved in isopropyl alcohol is placed in bright sun light and allowed to stand. After several hours the first crystals of benzopinacol begin to separate and within a few days the reaction is complete (13). The reaction proceeds through a photoexcited state of benzophenone. The excited intermediate abstracts hydrogen from the solvent (isopropyl alcohol) to form the diphenylhydroxymethyl radical and a …

Electromigration In A Cation Exchange Resin, Barton Stephen Solomon Jun 1962

Electromigration In A Cation Exchange Resin, Barton Stephen Solomon

Honors Theses

The purpose of this research was to investigate the phenomenon of electromigration of ions in a cation exchange resin. When a potential is applied across a solution of ions in series with an ion exchange resin column, the cations will migrate through the resin column, the cations will migrate through the resin toward the cathode and the anions will migrate toward the anode. The cations as they migrate through the resign should form bands because of their different ionic mobilities and their different exchange rates on the resin. The object of these experiments was to design and build the apparatus …

Catalyzed Reactions Of Organosiliconhydrides With Α, Β Unsaturated Ketones, Robert P. Desieno Jun 1962

Catalyzed Reactions Of Organosiliconhydrides With Α, Β Unsaturated Ketones, Robert P. Desieno

Honors Theses

The addition of organosiliconhydrides to olefins has been of laboratory and industrial importance for twenty-five years. Literally hundreds of examples may be cited describing reactions of organosiliconhydrides with a wide spectrum of olefinic compounds. These reactions have been conducted in either the catalyzed or uncatalyzed state. While the reactions may be forced under the influence of heat and pressure, they are more economically and practically carried out in the presence of catalysts. Catalysts encompass a wide variety of materials including peroxides, tertiary bases, metals, metal salts, U.V light, and gamma radiation.

Diffraction Of Spherical Scalar And Vector Waves At Axial Points Of A Circular Aperture And Disk, Keith Leon Mcdonald Jun 1962

Diffraction Of Spherical Scalar And Vector Waves At Axial Points Of A Circular Aperture And Disk, Keith Leon Mcdonald

Faculty Publications

The following work treats Kottler's saltus problem of diffraction of electromagnetic waves emitted by a Hertzian oscillator source and the analogous Kirchhoff's scalar problem of waves emitted by a point source. The medium is a homogeneous isotropic dielectric. In the vector case a new exact solution of the basic integrals is presented, at axial points only, (a) behind a circular aperture in a "black'' screen, and (b) behind its complementary "black'' disk. The relative time-averaged intensity of energy flow is plotted for the disk only. It is shown that the scalar theory predicts considerably larger values than the electromagnetic theory …

The basis of the compass is a rotating-ring magnetometer of the type first described by Nielsen (1) and used by others (2,3,4) for various purposes. The output of this device consists of two a.c. signals, whose relative phase is determined by the orientation of the magnetometer with respect to the external magnetic …

On The Initial Value Problem For The Quasi-Linear Parabolic Partial Differential Equation, Henry Hermes May 1962

On The Initial Value Problem For The Quasi-Linear Parabolic Partial Differential Equation, Henry Hermes

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

In this paper we consider second order parabolic partial differential equations on the infinite strip. We confine our attention to the quasi-linear equations, and in particular, the problem

(0-1) u͙(t,x) = f(u)uxx(t.x) , (t,x) ε(0,T)x(-∞,∞) ≡ DT, T>0

u(0,x) = u0(x) , x ε (-∞,∞).

Existence, uniqueness and properties of the solution are discussed. These results can be immediately generalized to problems where the differential equation is of the form u͙(t,x) = f(t,x,u)u xx(t,x).
