Determination Of A Molecular Weight Distribution For Intermediate Degradation Products Of Bovine Plasma Albumin, Sherwin M. Beck Apr 1961

Determination Of A Molecular Weight Distribution For Intermediate Degradation Products Of Bovine Plasma Albumin, Sherwin M. Beck

Master's Theses

Within the last decade several important studies have been made on the large degradation of products of proteins. However, little work has been done on the intermediate degradation products. This study is concerned with the chromatographic separation of intermediate fragments from chrymotryptie hydrolysates of bovine plasma albumin and the determination of the molecular weights of the fragments. An automatic recording differential refractometer employing a differential cell of original design permitted the observation of chromatographic components as they were eluted f rom a column of Sephadex G-50. A fraction collector of original design collected 3 ml. fractions of the effluent. Three …

Analysis Of Scintillation Pulse Shapes For Stilbene Using Neutron And Gamma-Ray Excitation, Roland Lee Bowles Apr 1961

Analysis Of Scintillation Pulse Shapes For Stilbene Using Neutron And Gamma-Ray Excitation, Roland Lee Bowles

Master's Theses

In experimental nuclear physics it is often desirable to detect neutrons in the presence of a heavy gemna-ray background. This situation presents a problem since neutron counters also respond to gamma radiation. However, recently it has been shown that the scintillation counter employing an organic crystal scintillator and pulse-shape discrimination may well furnish the solution to this problem.

Polysubstituted Piperazinethiocarboxamides, Donald W. Kreh Apr 1961

Polysubstituted Piperazinethiocarboxamides, Donald W. Kreh

Master's Theses

Thiourea and its derivatives have found wide application in dyes, photographic film, elastomers, plastics and textiles. Certain thioureas possess biological properties and considerable work has been done in this area. The historical portion of this paper is divided into biological and non-biological properties of thioureas. In the literature search, primary importance was given to the biological properties of thioureas. The objective of the experimental work was to prepare compounds having potential pharmacological activity and to determine the physical constants of these compounds.

Extension Of The Range Of Northern Pike (Esox Lucius), D. B. Mccarraher Apr 1961

Extension Of The Range Of Northern Pike (Esox Lucius), D. B. Mccarraher

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

Recent technical publications and popular literature have not fully established the present geographical range of the northern pike. A survey by the writer in 1955 showed that 26 states and Canadian provinces had resident northern pike populations. During the past 5 years pike have been introduced into several other states, thus extending the range. Pike are already established in most of the northern states and are now being released into waters of the south and west.

Isomerism In Bromine Nuclei, Albert Goodman Feb 1961

Isomerism In Bromine Nuclei, Albert Goodman

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

If the phenomenon of isomerism occurred in bromine nuclei, it would be of great help in elaborating the level schemes of these isotopes. The occurrence of isomerism in the odd isotopes of arsenic and rubidium, the nearest odd-Z neighbors to bromine, suggested similar behavior in bromine odd-Z isotopes. In this investigation, the pulsed-beam method was used to search for isomers. The procedure consisted of pulsing the beam of a Van de Graaff accelerator and counting any resulting activities during the time between beam pulses. After preliminary surveys during which natural bromine was bombarded with neutrons and natural selenium was bombarded …

A Note On Hausdorff Separation, Edwin Halfar Feb 1961

A Note On Hausdorff Separation, Edwin Halfar

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

The examples usually given as instances of topological spaces that have T1-separation but not T2-separation (Hausdorff) also have the property that some compact subset is not closed. This with the classic result concerning closedness of compact subsets of a Hausdorff space suggests the question of the equivalence of Hausdorff separation and the condition that the class of compact subsets be a subclass of the class of the closed subsets of a given space. The following is a simple result of this type and may be of some use in an introductory course in point set topology. …

Water For Man, Sterling A. Taylor Jan 1961

Water For Man, Sterling A. Taylor

Faculty Honor Lectures

Man's uses for water are rapidly increasing. His demands and needs for water for his personal use and for cleanliness, recreation, industry, and food production are increasing as the population and standard of living rise. At the same time, his knowledge of the behavior and nature of water is increasing.

A Formula For A Class Of Steady State Solutions, Don E. Edmondson Jan 1961

A Formula For A Class Of Steady State Solutions, Don E. Edmondson

Journal of the Graduate Research Center

An integral representation formula is developed to cope with the problem of determining and studying the steady state solutions of a class of differential equations. The class of differential equations studied is y' + yf = g, where f and g are continuous functions admitting period T > 0. The formula then defines a function admitting period T and serves to allow an analysis of the differential equation above. Theorem I delineates some of the properties of the function and Theorem II provides answers to the steady state questions. An application is made to a capacitance circuit problem.

Water Conservation On The Farm, John W. Lewis Jan 1961

Water Conservation On The Farm, John W. Lewis

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

SMALL scale conservation of water for agricultural use is becoming increasingly important throughout Australia.

As land development intensifies, it is natural that farmers turn to more dams and earthen tanks for stock water and irrigation.

Adequate water is essential to supply the carrying capacities made possible by improved pastures, and where greater quantities of water can be stored, fodder crops, pastures, orchards and vegetables can be irrigated.

Bluebush Seed : Cleaning, Drying And Storing, C V. Malcolm Jan 1961

Bluebush Seed : Cleaning, Drying And Storing, C V. Malcolm

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

BLUEBUSH (Kochia brevifolia) is a perennial plant which occurs naturally in Western Australia.

In the past it has attracted little attention, but in recent years it has created interest as a highly nutritious and salt tolerant plant well adapted to certain salt affected soils in the wheatbelt.

A previous article (Bulletin No. 2630) by Smith and Malcolm drew attention to its use. One of the problems in establishing bluebush is to obtain seed supplies.

Fossils And Farmers. 2. The Ice Age, D Merrilees Jan 1961

Fossils And Farmers. 2. The Ice Age, D Merrilees

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

What did the giant Australian marsupials of the "Ice Age" look like?

Fossil remains found by farmers could help reconstruct them, as well as giving some idea of conditions on the Australian continent at that time, says D. Merrilees, B.Sc, acting Curator of Palaeontology at the West Australian Museum.

Good Pasture On A Problem Soil, R Sprivulis Jan 1961

Good Pasture On A Problem Soil, R Sprivulis

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The acid peaty sands of the South-West have always been problem soils, and are often considered useless.

But, by following recommended establishment methods, farmers like Mr. F. E. Bellanger, of Nornalup, have shown that it can carry valuable pasture.

Reclaim Salty Soils With Bluebush, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia Jan 1961

Reclaim Salty Soils With Bluebush, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

BLUEBUSH (Kochia brevifolia) is an Australian plant which can produce good yields of excellent feed when grown on grown well drained salty soils in the 12 to 15-inch rainfall districts of Western Australia.
