Fossils And Farmers, D Merrilees Jan 1961

Fossils And Farmers, D Merrilees

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The West Australian Museum is looking for fossil remains from the Pleistocene age, the period of geological time when Europe was covered with ice.

Little is known of what the Australian continent was like at that time, and the Museum hopes, by collecting as many fossil remains as possible, to get a better picture of Australian conditions at that time.

It is also hoped to discover more about the ancestors of our present marsupial fauna.

Farmers may be able to make a valuable contribution to the present knowledge of this period by forwarding suspected fossil remains to the Museum. Here …

Palatability Of Forage Plants In North-West Sheep Pastures, R H. Collett Jan 1961

Palatability Of Forage Plants In North-West Sheep Pastures, R H. Collett

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

A DECLINE in carrying capacity has occurred in large areas of the Pilbara district of the North-West, due to the decrease in palatable plants and the increase in unpalatable ones.

The relative palatability of the various species to sheep is therefore a matter of considerable importance to pastoralists.

Potassium Deficiency In Medium Rainfall Areas, William John Toms Jan 1961

Potassium Deficiency In Medium Rainfall Areas, William John Toms

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

IT is well known that potassic fertilisers must be used for the successful growth of subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum L.) on many soils in the higher rainfall districts of Western Australia.

Recent investigations have shown that some soils in medium rainfall districts are also too low in potassium to grow healthy subterranean clover pastures.

Coordination Of 2, 8- Bishydroxymethyl - 2, Elements Of The First Transition Series, Charles Edward O'Rear Jan 1961

Coordination Of 2, 8- Bishydroxymethyl - 2, Elements Of The First Transition Series, Charles Edward O'Rear

Master's Theses

The preparation and study of 2, 8-bishydroxymethyl-2, 8-dimethyl-3, 7-diaza-1,5,9-nonanetriol with ions of the first transition series have been investigated. Spectrophotometric studies of solutions of this compound with Cu(II) and Ni(II) ions gave evidence of the formation of complexes containing one mole of ligand per metal ion throughout a wide pH range. The Cu(II) complex, the yellow colored Fe(III) complex formed at high pH, and the light blue colored Ni(II) complex have remained stable over several months. The red colored Ni(II) complex changes slowly into a more stable greenish-yellow complex. The ligand formed weaker complexes with Co(II) and Mn(II). Data from …

An Investigation Of The Analysis Of Turpentine By Gas Chromatography, John R. Wagner Jan 1961

An Investigation Of The Analysis Of Turpentine By Gas Chromatography, John R. Wagner

Master's Theses

The development of gas chromatography and the publication of data on terpene analysis by this method has lead to this attempt to analyze turpentine by gas chromatography. The work has been limited to Gum Spirits of Turpentine and Steam Distilled Wood Turpentine since these are of chief importance and are the only types commonly retailed in small packages.

There have been three objectives:

1. To develop a method based on gas chromatography for distinguishing between Steam Distilled Wood Turpentine and Gum Spirits of Turpentine, and detection of mixtures and adulteration.

2. To identify as many components of the two turpentines …

Sacramento-Wilcox Game Management Area: General Information And Regulations

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Publications

The Sacramento-Wilcox Game Management Area was acquired by the Game Commission in 1948 with funds apportioned to the state through the federal excise tax on firearms and ammunition.

The Area serves primarily as a waterfowl refuge, and public hunting area. A game farm, which holds pheasant stock through the winter months is also located on the property.

This state special use area encompasses 2,313 acres of game-rich land with approximately 40 percent of the acreage consisting of lake or lagoon. The remainder is in diversified cropland. The topography is typical of the rainwater-basin country - miles of relatively flat tableland …

Geologic Section Of Bradley, Calhoun, Ouachita, And Part Of Nevada Counties, Arkansas, Donald R. Albin Jan 1961

Geologic Section Of Bradley, Calhoun, Ouachita, And Part Of Nevada Counties, Arkansas, Donald R. Albin

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

A series of 23 test holes has been drilled across Bradley, Calhoun, Ouachita, and part of Nevada Counties in southcentral Arkansas to determine the geology of the shallow water-bearing deposits of Tertiary and Quaternary age . The correlation of the lithologic and electric logs of the test holes and available electric and drillers' logs of oil-test wells indicates that: (1) the transition zone in the upper part of the Midway group may be about 85 feet thick in Nevada and Ouachita Counties; (2) the contact between the Wilcox and Claiborne groups is about 12 miles northwest of the location shown …

Minor Elements Can Be Overdone, L T. Jones Jan 1961

Minor Elements Can Be Overdone, L T. Jones

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

T H E term "minor elements" which is now commonly used and well understood by farmers and gardeners, refers to the five essential plant foods—copper, zinc, manganese, molybdenum and boron.

These five essential plant foods are needed by all plants in minute quantities and it is relatively easy to use them in excess of actual requirements or even in toxic amounts.

In practice this is not usually a problem with cereals and pastures. The important exception is when zinc alone is added to a cereal crop low in copper and the extra zinc accentuates the copper deficiency, and poorer yields …

Establishing Saltland Pastures, C V. Malcolm Jan 1961

Establishing Saltland Pastures, C V. Malcolm

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

WITH the approach of winter, thoughts are turning to the seeding season. It will therefore be appropriate to discuss methods of establishing saltland pastures.

This discussion will be restricted to "bluebush," creeping saltbush, and old man saltbush. Seed of these plants is available from local stock firms.

Healthy Pastures, F E. Ryan Jan 1961

Healthy Pastures, F E. Ryan

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

IN sweeping away forests to make room for pastures we have taken on the responsibility of maintaining these areas in a condition suitable for the growth of pasture plants.

This is done by a choice of suitable species, fertilising, cultivating, drainage, control of grazing and by weed and insect control.

The Use Of Lime In Market Gardens, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

THE term "lime" when used in relation to agriculture means any calcium containing material that is capable of correcting soil acidity.

While generally used for this purpose, lime has many other equally important functions in the soil.

A Proposal For The Use Of The Method Of Characteristics As A Condition On The Numerical Solutions Of Two-Dimensional Lagrangian Isentropic Flow, Christian D. Anderson Jan 1961

A Proposal For The Use Of The Method Of Characteristics As A Condition On The Numerical Solutions Of Two-Dimensional Lagrangian Isentropic Flow, Christian D. Anderson

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

The method of characteristics has been widely used in two- dimensional problems (i.e., one spatial dimension and time or two spatial dimensions for the steady state), and it was felt that this method, in all or part, could be applied to time-dependent, two- space hydrodynamics.

In this paper we have done the following:

1. Derived the two-dimensional, time-dependent, nonviscous Lagrangian Equations;

2. Discussed, in general, some aspects of the method of characteristics;

3. Applied the method to our Lagrangian equations; and finally,

4. Proposed a possible application of our results to the numerical solution of the Lagrangian equations.

Salty Seepages Can Be Productive, C V. Malcolm Jan 1961

Salty Seepages Can Be Productive, C V. Malcolm

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

MUCH has been said and written concerning the use of Paspalum vaginatum for growing on seepage areas, but the general production to be expected from seepage areas has not received much attention.

The fact is that properly handled, seepage areas can be quite productive, and can be valuable for summer grazing.

Microorganisms And Soil Structure, T. M. Mccalla, F. A. Haskins Jan 1961

Microorganisms And Soil Structure, T. M. Mccalla, F. A. Haskins

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

SUMMARY

Good stable soil structure is valuable for promoting the growth of plants and micro-organisms by permitting enhanced aeration and water penetration and by decreasing erosion under some conditions.

Micro-organisms influence water percolation through the soil. They may plug up soil pores with byproducts of growth and reduce water percolation. On the other hand, if a soil containing a large amount of microbial products is stirred and allowed to dry, then the percolation may be high.

Micro-organisms are involved in stabilizing soil structure by their products of decomposition and their cellular binding material, such as mycelia. Microorganisms differ greatly in …

Some Life History And Ecological Activites Of The Richardson Ground Squirrel In South Dakota, Dean Robert Gunderson Jan 1961

Some Life History And Ecological Activites Of The Richardson Ground Squirrel In South Dakota, Dean Robert Gunderson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Whenever man has gone he has changed his environment to suit his needs. Because of his need for food, man has plowed up the prairies and converted the grasslands to grain fields. Before white man settled the Great Plains, range rodents such as the prairie dog and the ground squirrel existed undisturbed and unmolested except by their natural predators. With the advent of cultivated crops, the range herbivores found a new and tasty source of food. Among these primary consumers which took advantage of man’s interference with the natural prairie was the Richardson ground squirrel, Citellus richardsoni (Figure 1). During …

Fall Food Habits Of The Merriams' Wild Turkey In Western South Dakota, Curtis Martin Twedt Jan 1961

Fall Food Habits Of The Merriams' Wild Turkey In Western South Dakota, Curtis Martin Twedt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The several varieties of wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) formerly ranged over much of what is now eastern, central and southwestern United States. A large portion of the species habitat was destroyed by logging and by clearing forest land for agricultural use. Wild turkey population, were also directly decimated because of bunting by early settlers. Edminister (1954) estimated present Wild turkey range to be approximately 1 per cent of the historic range. In the past few decades, wild turkey population have increased to the point where the species has begun to assume a prominent place among the game birds. . . …

Determination Of Minimum Lethal Level Of Toxaphene As A Piscicide In Lakes Of North Dakota, Dale L. Henegar Jan 1961

Determination Of Minimum Lethal Level Of Toxaphene As A Piscicide In Lakes Of North Dakota, Dale L. Henegar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Toxaphene as a piscicide for localized field application has not been widely used because minimum lethal concentrations have not been in the field. There is, however, considerable information gained from laboratory bio-assay studies (Surber, 1498; Duedoreff, et al. 1953; Hooper and Grzenda, 1955, et al. 1959). Concentrations indicated by such studies are not necessarily correct for field use. Prevost (1960) pointed out that results from controlled laboratory experiments do not always yield dosages exhibiting similar results in the field where a number of variables, both known and unknown, exist over which the field worker has little or no control. Gebhards …
