An Investigation Of The Formation Constant Of Molecular Silver Chloride Using Ion Exchange Techniques.|Nii.|Pan Investigation Of The Rate Of Precipitation Of Silver Sulfide By Thioacetamide, James W. Pyper

Theses and Dissertations

The first part of this work reports on the investigation of the formation constant of molecular silver chloride using ion exchange techniques. In order to determine the formation constant, it was necessary to develop a method of rinsing the sorbed molecular silver chloride from the resin. It was found that desorption with nitrobenzene would remove the sorbed molecular species. However, the formation constant was not calculated since the nitrobenzene used contained hydrogen ion and chloride ion which removed silver ion as well as the molecular species. In the study of the formation of silver sulfide by the reaction between the …

The Temperature Dependence Of The Drying Of Horizontal Soil Columns, Craig Loren Wiegand May 1960

The Temperature Dependence Of The Drying Of Horizontal Soil Columns, Craig Loren Wiegand

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A consideration of the physical principles involved in evaporative drying of soil indicates that several physical processes might possibly limit the rate of evaporation. These include the rate of supply of energy to the site of evaporation, the rate of transfer of water vapor through the sample or through the atmosphere above the sample, and the rate of unsaturated flow of water to the soil surface or to the site of evaporation.

Hydrogen Bonding Between The Carbonyl Group And Wyoming Bentonite, Robert A. Kohl May 1960

Hydrogen Bonding Between The Carbonyl Group And Wyoming Bentonite, Robert A. Kohl

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The vibrational frequencies of atom to atom bonds within a molecule are a function of the bond energies. Each bond has its characteristic frequency, and most of these frequencies can be detected with the infrared spectrophotometer. When one compound reacts with another or is adsorbed on the surface of a solid, detectable frequency changes or shifts may occur. These changes or shifts yield valuable information about the bonds which are formed or broken.

Interaction Of Riboflavin With Molybdenum, Jacques Tocatlian May 1960

Interaction Of Riboflavin With Molybdenum, Jacques Tocatlian

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Molybdenum may function as a catalyst in promoting and controlling some of the complex chemical reactions that go on in living systems. The lack of understanding which exists about these reactions is due to their obvious complexity and to the extremely minute quantities of molybdenum involved. Traces of molybdenum have been shown to have spectacular results on the growth of plants when added to certain soils. This metal is also required for the growth of azobacter, the nitrogen-fixing bacteria (1).

Molybdenum has been shown to be present in four enzymes: nitrate reductase (2), hydrogenase (3), xanthine oxidase (4) and aldehyde …

Metal-Metal Ion Exchange Of Mercury And Some Amalgams, Richard Charles Legendre Apr 1960

Metal-Metal Ion Exchange Of Mercury And Some Amalgams, Richard Charles Legendre

Doctoral Dissertations

Proposed Problem

The objective of this research was to investigate the behavior of metal ions in aqueous solution in their exchange with atoms of the same metal, but where the metallic phase would be in the liquid state.

Research along these lines but involving solid metallic phases has demonstrated that the exchangeability of an ion with a solid metal probably depends on the ability of the metal to re-form its surfaces when in contact with these solutions. A preceding section has reported on the sensitivity of exchange to any of the various processes that can affect the nature of the …

Determination Of Arsenic In Fish By Neutron Activation Analysis, William Walter Ullmann Apr 1960

Determination Of Arsenic In Fish By Neutron Activation Analysis, William Walter Ullmann

Honors Theses

The use of arsenicals to control aquatic vegetation has become widespread. A study was conducted to determine possible uptake of arsenic by fish in treated waters. Present methods for the analysis of arsenic (1,2) are reliable when applied to water and bottom samples which contain relatively small concentrations of organic matter. In the presence of larger concentrations, arsenic is lost during digestion. Recoveries of from 40-60 per cent were obtained when the method for the analysis of arsenic in food (2) was applied to fish flesh.

Gas Chromatography Of Hydrogen-Deuterium Mixtures, Paul Payson Hunt Mar 1960

Gas Chromatography Of Hydrogen-Deuterium Mixtures, Paul Payson Hunt

Doctoral Dissertations

Introduction: In recent years the gas chromatographic method has found widespread applications, chiefly for analytical purposes. This method is principally employed for the separation, identification, and quantitative determination of volatile compounds. It is potentially of great value for the quantitative determination of mixtures of the hydrogen isotopes. The development of a rapid, convenient, and inexpensive method for the analysis of the hydrogen isotopes would be a valuable addition to many laboratories, especially those where a mass spectrograph is unavailable. This problem was undertaken in an attempt to develop further the chromatographic method for the separation and quantitative determination of hydrogen …

Preliminary Report: Monolayer Behavior Studies, 1959, Bureau Of Reclamation

Publications (WR)

During the fall of 1959, monolayer behavior studies were made on two lakes in the southwest; Boulder Basin of Lake Mead, Nevada, and Lake Sahuaro near Phoenix, Arizona.

These studies were made to evaluate the effect of geographical and climatological conditions on movement and behavior of monolayers. The Lake Sahuaro tests also were used to provide data for design and development of improved methods of application and maintenance of a film on this lake in anticipation of full scale, evaporation-reduction tests to be performed there during the summer of I960.

The Lake Mead studies produced the following general points of …

Overcoming Stock Watering Problems In The Kimberleys, B Swan Jan 1960

Overcoming Stock Watering Problems In The Kimberleys, B Swan

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

ONE of the ever-present problems of the pastoral areas is that of providing: watering-points in reasonably close proximity to the grazing areas.

All too frequently, the country on the river frontages and that in the vicinity of the water-holes becomes eaten out and although there may be ample feed on other portions of the run, it is too far distant from the available water to be effectively utilised.

The Chelation Of Cu(Ii) With 1, 3-Bis(Tris(Hydroxymethyl)Methylamino)-2-Propanol And 1, 3-Bis (2-Hydroxyethylamino)-2-Propanol, David Andrew Jackson Jr.

Master's Theses

The chelating agent 1, 3-bis(2-hydroxyethylamino)-2-propanol dihydrochloride was prepared and preliminary examinations of the Cu(ll) and Fe(lll) complexes were carried out spectrophotometrically. This dihydrochloride as well as 1, 3 bis(tris(hydroxymethyl)methylamino)-2-propanol dihydrochloride. were converted from the chloride salts to their corresponding ammonium bases. The conversion was carried out by passing an aqueous solution of each chloride salt through an ion exchange column containing Amberlite XE-78 resin.

Solutions of these bases were standardized for use in potentiometric titration&. Each ammonium base was titrated with standard perchloric acid at 20°C, 30°C, and 40°C. The dissociation constants. were calculated using these data. Aqueous solutions of …

Preparation Of Elemental Boron And Measurement Of Its Emittance At Incandescent Temperatures, Claude P. Talley Jan 1960

Preparation Of Elemental Boron And Measurement Of Its Emittance At Incandescent Temperatures, Claude P. Talley

Master's Theses

The normal spectral emittance at 0. 65 microns of elemental boron specimens was measured at incandescent temperatures by the hollow-tube method, This was made possible by depositing boron onto thin-walled hollow tubes of graphite and molybdenum. An approximate value of the total hemispherical emittance for boron was also obtained. The deposition of boron was accomplished by chemical vapor plating with boron tribromide and hydrogen. The boron produced was characterized in several ways.

The Dispersal And Acclimatization Of The Muskrat, Ondatra Zibethicus (L.), In Finland, Atso Artimo

Other Publications in Wildlife Management

The natural range of the muskrat, Ondatra zibethicus (L.), comprises the major part of the North American continent (Fig. 1). In the northern and eastern parts of its range its distribution is more or less continuous, but in the arid west it is very patchy. The species is absent from some areas which, according to Storer (1938), are suitable for it. This writer assumes (op.cit. pp. 159-160) that »Muskrats probably reached some of the now isolated waters of the West during a period when aquatic and palustrine habitats were more widespread, in late Pleistocene or postglacial times. With subsequent contraction …
