Simulative Investigation Of The Detection Of Modes Of Luminosity Variation In Astrophysical Sources, James Collins
Simulative Investigation Of The Detection Of Modes Of Luminosity Variation In Astrophysical Sources, James Collins
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Five astronomical data analysis methods were evaluated, using computer simulation techniques, for minimum detection levels, periodicity detection, and parameter estimation sensitivities. The evaluation of these methods was accomplished using three basic waveforms with the addition of ten “random” noise samples from a Gaussian distribution of known parameters. The chi-square and t-test methods were evaluated in detecting low-amplitude variability and brightness level shifts. Results indicate both methods have a strong dependence on the estimation of the standard deviation (σ) where a 0.1 change in σ will affect detection rates by ten to twenty-five percent at the ninety-five percent confidence level. The …
The Effects Of Bridging Ligands On Anodic Stripping Voltammetric Analysis, Larry Beasley
The Effects Of Bridging Ligands On Anodic Stripping Voltammetric Analysis, Larry Beasley
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV) is an electroanalytical method used in the determination of trace metals in solutions volumes of 20 milliliters or less. Generally, 10-6 M concentrations are routinely analyzed.
The analysis of Zn(II), Cd(II), and Cr(III) by ASV was Investigated, and the effects of introducing the bridging ligands, cyanide and thiocyanate into solutions of these metal ions was examined. These effects include a cathodic shift in the reduction potentials of the metals, and ASV signal changes ranging from small increases in peak currents to a total loss of peak-current signals, depending on the concentration of the ligand added.

A Technical Focus For Documenting The Effectiveness Of The Cooperative Owrt-Institute Water Resources Research Program, L. Douglas James
Reports
For years, the cooperative water resources research program of the Office of Water Research and Technology and the water resources research institutes in the respective states has been experiencing considerable difficulty in generating agency, congressional, and user support of a sort that attracts sufficient funding to maintain a dynamic research program. Efforts to increase support have included recruiting greater interaction with research user groups, expansion of the technology transfer program, cultivation of interaction of center directors and research users with congress, shifting requests for added funding within the research program from the allotment funding given the respective states to matching …
Ecotypic Differentiation Of Andropogon Virginicus L. In Relation To Strip Mine Spoil Banks, Valina Kay Hurt
Ecotypic Differentiation Of Andropogon Virginicus L. In Relation To Strip Mine Spoil Banks, Valina Kay Hurt
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Reciprocal plantings of populations of broomsedge, taken from an abandoned strip mine and from an abandoned farm plot in south central Kentucky, on strip mine spoil and abandoned field soil resulted in patterns of populations differentiation. Clonal plantings of populations from strip mine habitats and old field development appeared equal in height and biomass when grown on old field soils in both field trials and growth chamber studies. Populations when planted in strip mine soils in field trials and controlled growth experiments. Later flowering in strip mine populations may be a key to survival strategy in the harsh microclimates of …
Franck Condon Factors And R-Centeroids For Six Diatomic Molecules, Patricia M. Fazio
Franck Condon Factors And R-Centeroids For Six Diatomic Molecules, Patricia M. Fazio
Physics Theses & Dissertations
The Franck Condon factor is defined as the square of the overlap integral and is so named because of its ties with the Franck Condon Principle. The r-centroid is the internuclear separation associated with the electronic transition of the diatomic molecule. The physical meaning of these integrals is discussed. Two methods for construction of the wavefunctions are presented. Both methods employ the Morse Potential Energy function. The first method calculates the integrals using the analytic wavefunction of Morse and the second method has numerically constructed wavefunct!ons. The twelve transitions and six diatomic molecules studied include; B 2Σ+ to X …

Turbidity - Suspended Sediment Relations In A Subalpine Watershed, Thomas A. Holstrom
Turbidity - Suspended Sediment Relations In A Subalpine Watershed, Thomas A. Holstrom
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The effect of particle size distribution of suspended sediment vii upon a turbidity reading at a known concentration has been relatively quantified for stream bank materials on the Moccasin Basin - North Fork Fish Creek (MB-NFFC) Watershed, located in northwestern Wyoming. As expected, an increase in the median particle size in suspension results in a decrease of turbidity at a given concentration. The relationship derived correlates the particle size distribution of a chemically dispersed stream-bank material sample, with the Coefficient of Fineness for a mechanically dispersed portion of the sample.
Two Basic Methodological Choices In Wildland Vegetation Inventories: Their Consequences And Implications, Donald Alan Shute
Two Basic Methodological Choices In Wildland Vegetation Inventories: Their Consequences And Implications, Donald Alan Shute
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In designing inventories of wildland vegetation, two of the many basic methodological choices are: 1) whether data are collected, reduced, and stored in discrete classes or as continuous variables, and 2) whether data are gathered as general purpose variables to bear upon many questions, or as specific purpose variables optimized for only one type of prediction. The effects of these two choices on accuracy of vegetation inventories to predict plant community production were examined by comparing regression models built upon differing sets of independent variables "inventoried" from a common data base. Contrary to expectations, discrete variables of classified community types …
Effects Of Forage Availability On Voluntary Intake And Feeding Behavior Of Grazing Heifers, Anastasios S. Nastis
Effects Of Forage Availability On Voluntary Intake And Feeding Behavior Of Grazing Heifers, Anastasios S. Nastis
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Forage intake by animals is an important factor in determining production of livestock products from rangelands. However, relatively little is known of effects of such forage variables as availability and distribution in space upon intake. Even less is known about how the grazing animal modifies its feeding tactics when confronted with diminishing or limited supplies of available forage and how such altered behavior may affect the animal's energetic cost for existence. Forage intake, body weight gain, grazing time and biting rate of Angus heifers was related to forage availability and plant height on semiarid crested wheatgrass rangeland during the late …

A Μ-Model Approach On The Cell Means: The Analysis Of Full, Design Models With Non-Orthogonal Data, Richard Van Koningsveld
A Μ-Model Approach On The Cell Means: The Analysis Of Full, Design Models With Non-Orthogonal Data, Richard Van Koningsveld
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This work considers the application of a µ-model approach on the cell means to a special yet important class of experimental designs. These include full factorial, completely nested, and mixed models with one or more observations per cell. By limiting attention to full models, an approach to the general data situation is developed which is both conceptually simple and computationally advantageous.
Conceptually, the method is simple because the design related effects are defined as if the cell means are single observations. This leads to a rather simple algorithm for generating main effect contrasts, from which associated interaction contrasts can also …

Reproduction in 1977 occurred from April to July in the field population and from April through August in the laboratory population.
Reproduction was determined from gross examination and weight measurements of testes and ovaries, breeding coloration in males and diameter measurements of ova.
Males and females matured at about the same size, 28 to 30 mm TL. The number of mature …
The Prior Distribution In Bayesian Statistics, Kai-Tang Chen
The Prior Distribution In Bayesian Statistics, Kai-Tang Chen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A major problem associated with Bayesian estimation is selecting the prior distribution. The more recent literature on the selection of the prior is reviewed. Very little of a general nature on the selection of the prior is formed in the literature except for non-informative priors. This class of priors is seen to have limited usefulness. A method of selecting an informative prior is generalized in this thesis to include estimation of several parameters using a multivariate prior distribution. The concepts required for quantifying prior information is based on intuitive principles. In this way, it can be understood and controlled by …
