The Cytochrome Composition Of Bacillus Subtilis And Bacillus Megaterium, John Harvey Mangum Aug 1959

The Cytochrome Composition Of Bacillus Subtilis And Bacillus Megaterium, John Harvey Mangum

Theses and Dissertations

A spectroscopic and enzymatic investigation of the cytochromes of B. megaterium and B. subtilis was conducted. Attempts were made to isolate and characterize the individual cytochromes as well as to determine the locale of such activities as cytochrome c oxidase, DPNH oxidase, succinic dehydrogenase, cytochrome c reductase and diaphorse. Only two methods proved effective in liberating the cytochromes; disruption of the cells with sonic osillations and grinding tlhe cells with alumina. These procedures caused a fragmentation of the cell membrane. It was found that the entire cytochrome complement of these two bacteria was bound intimately to particles which most likely …

Studies On The Biological Oxidation Of Ferrous Iron And Chalcopyrite, Loral Alvin Decker Aug 1959

Studies On The Biological Oxidation Of Ferrous Iron And Chalcopyrite, Loral Alvin Decker

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effectiveness of the leaching streams from waste copper ore dumps as a nutrient solution for subsequent biological oxidation and solubilization of sulfide minerals. The copper in the leaching streams is precipitated by displacement with iron. As a result of this procedure the solution is high in ferrous iron concentration and has a pH of near 3.7. The bacteria in the leaching streams are capable of oxidizing ferrous iron to the ferric state and sulfide minerals to sulfates. The effects of temperatures, pH, urea, and aeration rate on the oxidation of the …

Substituted Triphenyl Tetrazolium Chlorides, Lawrence Donald Hanback

Master's Theses

The work in this thesis is a continuation of a project started at the University of Richmond in 1952 by A. G. Richardson under the directorship of Dr. J. S. Pierce and Dr. George z.Williams, Director of Clinical Pathology, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland.

The purpose of the research was to prepare triphenyl tetrazolium salts, substituted, particularly in the ortho and para positions, with various electron accepting and electron donating groups. It was hoped that these substitutions would impart enough differences in the properties of the compounds so as to allow d etection of certain biological reactions. The tetrazolium …

Conversion Of Electromagnetic Waves Into Magnetohydrodynamic Waves At The Interface Of A Dielectric And Incomprehensible Fluid, Ralph L. Marsten Jun 1959

Conversion Of Electromagnetic Waves Into Magnetohydrodynamic Waves At The Interface Of A Dielectric And Incomprehensible Fluid, Ralph L. Marsten

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

Consider space to be separated into two semi-infinite regions by a rigid boundary. On one side lies medium A--a perfect, rigid, dielectric, with electric permittivity € and magnetic permeability µ. On the other side is medium B; a perfect, fluid, perfectly conducting, also with magnet permeability µ. Throughout all spaces exist a uniform static magnetic field H.

Now such a fluid as medium B is capable of supporting a magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) wave; and of course a perfect dielectric will support an electromagnetic (EM) wave. Suppose then, that a uniform plane EM wave in medium A is incident at arbitrary angle …

Method For Interpreting Extensive Air Shower Data, Darrell C. Kent

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

Three major topics are discussed in this thesis. The first of these has immediate application to analysis of air shower data which is presently being gathered by two large scintillation tanks located immediately behind the University of New Mexico physics building. The data with which the other two topics are concerned cannot be gathered with present equipment, but these preliminary calculations have been performed in anticipation of the installation of the appropriate apparatus.

An Experimental Method Of Determining The Shape Of Millimicrosecond Radiation Pulses, Robert Braslau Jun 1959

An Experimental Method Of Determining The Shape Of Millimicrosecond Radiation Pulses, Robert Braslau

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

The problem with which this investigation is concerned was to construct suitable apparatus to measure accurately the shape and the duration of a pulse of δ-radiation of approximately 10 Mev energy and 20 mμ sec duration. In particular, the shape of the tail of the pulse had to be determined as accurately as possible, so that millimicrosecond half lives can be measured accurately with the betatron.

Recording Of Geomagnetic Field Variations In An Orthogonal System, Chistian Schroeder Jun 1959

Recording Of Geomagnetic Field Variations In An Orthogonal System, Chistian Schroeder

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

Magnetic field variations in both magnitude and direction are known to occur due to such phenomena as atmospheric tides and solar activity. Magnetic storms caused by solar activity may bring about variations in excess of one percent of the magnitude of the earth's normal magnetic field; but in general the changes are slight and require sensitive instruments for their measurement.

The Geology Of The Flag Pond Quadrangle, Tennessee-North Carolina, Ebraham Shekarchi Jun 1959

The Geology Of The Flag Pond Quadrangle, Tennessee-North Carolina, Ebraham Shekarchi

Doctoral Dissertations

Purpose and Scope of the Investigation:

Several workers, as indicated in the following section, have commented upon the geology of the Flag Pond Quadrangle, but none have mapped or studied the area in detail--nor indeed, much of the adjacent region. Consequently, the purpose of this investigation is to obtain a comprehensive picture of the geology of the quadrangle.

The geology of the quadrangle is divisible into two natural units or parts, each with problems unique unto itself. The first of these units is the crystalline complex, the second is the sedimentary sequence which rests upon the crystalline rocks. The purpose …

Doctoral Dissertations

An improved effusiometry apparatus for analyzing hydrogen and deuterium mixtures was constructed and utilized to study the exchange reaction of deuterium with methanol over Raney nickel catalyst.

The exchange reaction was zero order with respect to deuterium pressure and pseudo-zero order with respect to methanol concentration. The apparent activation energy was found to be 3.5 kcal./mole. The specific reaction rate was 2.9 1. mm. min.-1 g.-1.

The effects of nitro compounds upon the exchange of deuterium with methanol over Raney nickel were studied. All of the compounds decreased the exchange at very low concentrations and all, except …

Doctoral Dissertations

Summary: The dimethyl esters of isometric 1,2-, 1,3-, and 1,4-cyclo-hexanedicarboxylic acids have been prepared and the rates of their acid catalyzed hydrolyses in 70 per cent acetone have been determined. All hydrolysis reactions wre run at four temperatures, 25°, 35°, 45°, and 55°. The rate constants for the hydrolyses at each of these temperatures, along with the activation energies for the reactions, have been tabulated in Table IV.

The rates of hydrolysis of the cis-1,3 and trans-1,4 diesters were found to be almost identical. Similarly, the reaction rates of the trans-1,3 and cis-1,4 diesters were found …
