Microscopic Radial Lines In Gels, Robert Peter Frosch Jun 1959

Microscopic Radial Lines In Gels, Robert Peter Frosch

Honors Theses

There are many interesting formations which may be prepared in gels. Probably the best known are Liesegang rings, first prepared in the latter nineteenth century and observed previously in such naturally occurring materials as agate. Besides rings periodic radial structures have been observed in gelatin. Some of these radial formations are visible to the naked eye; others may be observed only under a microscope. It is one of the radial formations of the layer type which will be discussed in this paper. For want of a better name the formation to be discussed will simply be referred to as radial …

The Photogalvanic Effect, George Henry Hofmann Jun 1959

The Photogalvanic Effect, George Henry Hofmann

Honors Theses

The photogalvantic effect has been studied by relatively few people. Perhaps the largest contribution to the study of this effect has been by E. Rabinowitch while the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and terminated in 1940. At this time Rabinowitch indicated the possibilities in the utilization of solar energy by the photogalvantic effect (1). Presented here is a study of the effect using a modified form of the apparatus used by Rabinowitch. An attempt is made at explaining the results obtained, the advantages and disadvantages of the apparatus used and suggestions are given for improvement. A specific photogalvantic system of high …

Light Scattering By Silicic Acid Gel-Forming Mixtures, Bruce Monroe Manzer

Honors Theses

In this investigation the scattering of light by silicic acid gel-forming mixtures has been studied during the process of gel formation in an effort to extend the work already done on their structure and the mechanism of gel formation. The intensity of the scattered light has been measured by means of Fisher Nefluoro-photometer and an attempt has been made to use the results in explaining the change which the gel-forming mixtures undergo during gel formation.

Topological Groupoids, Ronson J. Warne Jun 1959

Topological Groupoids, Ronson J. Warne

Doctoral Dissertations

A groupoid is a set G in which a single valued product ab is defined for every pair of elements a, b ε G. If G is a groupoid and at the same time a Hausdorff topological space, and, moreover, the multiplication in the groupoid G is continuous in the topological space G, then G is called a topological groupoid. Our aim in this dissertation is two-fold: (1) to study topological groupoids for their own sake; (2) to investigate the relation of certain topological properties to associativity. We note, in relation to the first motif, that many authors have dealt …

An Investigation Of The Feasibility Of Establishing A School Of Nursing In Connection With Bella Vista Hospital, M. Eulalia White

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The Bella Vista Hospital has had problems of staffing since it opened. Nurse shortages have been typical of all insular hospitals. There have been no national Seventh-day Adventist nurses available and no school where they could receive nursing education. The question has been raised whether it would be feasible to establish a school of nursing in connection with the hospital. This would give opportunity for Seventh-day Adventist young people who seek nursing education and would help prepare nurses to staff the hospital.

Through a survey of the Seventh-day Adventist church and youth membership in the Inter-American Division, it was found …

Lithogenesis Of The Pennsylvanian Madera Formation Of Palomas Peak, Sandia Mountains, New Mexico., Ronald D. Perkins May 1959

Lithogenesis Of The Pennsylvanian Madera Formation Of Palomas Peak, Sandia Mountains, New Mexico., Ronald D. Perkins

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The Pennsylvanian Madera formation of Palomas Peak in the Sandia Mountains of central New Mexico is a sequence of marine limestone and minor sandstone that ranges in age from Desmoinesian to Virgilian. The limestone is predominantly clastic or bioclastic and the sandstone is arkosic. Lithologic and paleontologic evidence suggests an epineritic to infraneritic environment on a gently subsiding shelf during deposition of the Madera Sediments.

Rhythmic deposition at Palomas Peak is evidenced by alternating clastic and bioclastic limestones which may have resulted from: (1) eustatic changes in sea level, (2) tectonic fluctuations in the downwarping of the shelf, or (3) …

Geology Of The Upper Middle Creek Area Huerfano County, Colorado, J. H. Copeland May 1959

Geology Of The Upper Middle Creek Area Huerfano County, Colorado, J. H. Copeland

Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)

The Sangre de Cristo Mountains of Colorado and New Mexico are, geologically speaking, relatively unknown. The equivocal nature of our knowledge of the range was a primary reason for studying a portion of it in some detail. Most of the previous studies have been concerned with the northern part of the range in Colorado, in the general area between Salida and La Veta Pass. This work has indicated that the complicated structure which characterizes the northern part of the range becomes simpler to the south. Therefore, a second objective of the current study has been to test this hypothesis. Thirdly, …
