Utilization Of Men Nurses As A Factor In Attracting Men Into The Profession, Arne Melvin Dahlsten

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Statement of Problem:

Would more men enter and remain in nursing, if the Seventh-day Adventist denomination would recognize the professional skills of qualified men nurses and utilize them on the same basis on which they utilize the professional skills of a qualitied women nurses?

Method:

The normative-survey method was employed in this study, to collect the necessary data. Two groups of men were used in the survey; men nurses who graduated from Seventh-day Adventist schools of nursing between the periods 1950 to 1955, and college men representing the two lower division classes.

Summary of Findings:

From eighty-six men graduates, forty-five …

The Extraction Of Scandium, Yttrium, And Lanthanum Using Various Monoalkyl Orthophosphoric Acids, Clarence Gerald Warren May 1958

The Extraction Of Scandium, Yttrium, And Lanthanum Using Various Monoalkyl Orthophosphoric Acids, Clarence Gerald Warren

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

The separation of lanthanum, yttrium, and the rare earth elements from their ores has been a challenge to the chemist for many years. The similarity in chemical properties has made their separation a problem of extraordinary difficulty. Fractional crystallization has been the classical method utilized in the past, although individual elements have been isolated by oxidation or reduction to other than the tripositive oxidation state (1). Recently ion exchange and solvent extraction methods have become more important as a means of separation of these elements. Both of these techniques depend upon fractional differences in the distribution of compounds or ions …

A Rotating Ring Magnetometer Remote Position Indicator, Robert B. Foster Jr. May 1958

A Rotating Ring Magnetometer Remote Position Indicator, Robert B. Foster Jr.

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

Many phases of present-day experimental physics require remote indicating devices where data must be transmitted either by wire or radio to a distant point. For example, when atmospheric parameters are measured by means of sounding balloons, it would be desirable to use a lightweight device which would accurately convert measured information into electrical data in a form which would allow easy transmission to a receiving station.

Absorption Of Antimony(Iii) And Indium From Anhydrous Acetic Acid By Ion Exchange Resins, Robert Tor Lofberg May 1958

Absorption Of Antimony(Iii) And Indium From Anhydrous Acetic Acid By Ion Exchange Resins, Robert Tor Lofberg

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

Organic ion exchange resins are a comparatively recent development. In 1935 Adams and Holmes prepared the first ion exchange resin by polymerizing polyhydric phenols with formaldehyde. The condensation product exhibited definite reversible cation exchange properties. The success of this experiment led them to the development of the first anion exchange resin which was prepared by the polymerization of phenylenediamine with formaldehyde. The publication of these experiments inspired many similar investigations leading directly to the manufacture of the numerous ion exchange resins now commercially available.

Geology Of The Southern Part Of The Ortiz Mountains Santa Fe County, New Mexico, John W. Peterson May 1958

Geology Of The Southern Part Of The Ortiz Mountains Santa Fe County, New Mexico, John W. Peterson

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The Ortiz Mountains lie in a belt of early Tertiary intrusive centers adjacent to the Rio Grande depression of north-central New Mexico. Tertiary organic activity and subsequent erosion have etched this mountain group into considerable relief.

Intrusive activity occurred during early Tertiary Espinaso time and resulted in emplacement of sills and dikes of a central stock. Correlation of volcanism with intrusive phases is difficult. Most volcansim probably occurred during the later part of Ortiz igneous activity. An elongate vent is exposed in the eastern part of the mountains and structurally occupies the highest position in the group.

The principle igneous …

In particular to prepare derivatives substituted in the 2 position by H or alkyl, in the 5 position by an H, alkyl or aralkyl oxygen function, and on the amine by a reduced amino acid residue

Corrosion Behavior Of Zircaloy, Alan Blair Riedinger May 1958

Corrosion Behavior Of Zircaloy, Alan Blair Riedinger

Honors Theses

Zirconium base alloys are widely used in water cooled nuclear reactors where their high cost is offset by their low neutron cross section and relatively good resistance to corrosion in water. Although the amount of corrosion is quite small, an accurate estimate of the amount to be expected is required for good reactor design. 'This estimate is made by extrapolating available data to the expected life of the reactor. For valid approximations it is necessary to know the form of this corrosion rate curve.

Horizontal Movement Of Moisture In Soil, D. W. L. Read May 1958

Horizontal Movement Of Moisture In Soil, D. W. L. Read

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The movement of water in soils is of great importance to all of us but especially to agriculturalists. If it were not for this movement plants would not be able to survive in soil. If the moisture moves too freely in the soil insufficient water can be stored to supply plants during dry periods. The movement of water through soil may remove plant nutrients or accumulate salts in soil horizons.

The flow of water in soil has been studied extensively for many years. Water movement can occur in either saturated or unsaturated soil. Darcy's law can be used with a …

Geology Of The Southern Part Of Wellsville Mountain, Wasatch Range, Utah, Ronald H. Gelnett

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Wellsville Mountain is 10 miles west of Logan, Utah, at the northern extremity of the Wasatch Range. Paleozoic rocks form a northeast-dipping homocline bounded in part by northwest-trending high-angle faults and cut by a series of northeast-trending high-angle faults. A major transverse fault, with a stratigraphic displacement of 4,500 feet, divides the mountain into two distinct blocks.

The rock units of the area are comparable to those of the Logan quadrangle immediately to the east. Pre-Cambrian rocks crop out in Box Elder Canyon, just east of Brigham City, and are overlain by at least 20,000 feet of northeast-dipping Paleozoic rocks …

An Application Of A Thermodynamic Flow Equation To Water Movement In Unsaturated Soil, Brennan Derry Soane May 1958

An Application Of A Thermodynamic Flow Equation To Water Movement In Unsaturated Soil, Brennan Derry Soane

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The movement of water in soil presents many interesting problems to the research worker. It is also a subject which finds wide and important application in agriculture and several branches of engineering.

The object of this work was to examine the usefulness of a new equation of flow of water in unsaturated soil. If valid, this new approach may be able to eliminate some of the gaps in our present knowledge of the subject.

All soil lying above the capillary fringe of a water table is in the unsaturated state with respect to water. This means that in any macroscopic …

The Peltier Effect And Its Use For Measuring Relative Activity Of Soil Water, Hans C. Korven May 1958

The Peltier Effect And Its Use For Measuring Relative Activity Of Soil Water, Hans C. Korven

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Soil moisture measurement embraces two basic concepts, namely, water content and relative activity. The measurement of moisture content, either on a weight or volume basis, yields the amount or quantity of water in the soil. The measurement of relative activity or the energy required to remove unit of water is related to the availability of the soil moisture to the plant. The measurement of soil bulk density, irrigation efficiency, and the amount of water to apply in an irrigation are a few examples that require the use of the moisture content concept. Whereas the first concept determines the amount of …

Geology Of The Northern Part Of The Ortiz Mountains, Santa Fe County, New Mexico, Otis M. Mcrae Apr 1958

Geology Of The Northern Part Of The Ortiz Mountains, Santa Fe County, New Mexico, Otis M. Mcrae

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The northern part of the Ortiz Mountains of north-central New Mexico consists of a tilted fault block of Cretaceous Mancos shale and Mesaverde formation intruded by latite-andesite porphyry sills and laccoliths and a nepheline-bearing augite manzonite stock. Igneous activity started with the development of a volcanic vent in what is now the central part of the mountains. Volcanic debris from the vent want removed from the area by erosion and provided sedimentary material for the late [ ] Espinaso volcanics of the adjoining areas. Intrusion of the latite-andesite porphyry sills and laccolite followed extrusive igneous activity, as demonstrated by the …

Geology Of The Northern End Of San Pedro Mountain, Rio Arriba And Sandoval Counties, New Mexico, Osler C. Hutson

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The structural complexity of this area provided the initial stimulus for this study. With encouragement from Dr. Vincent C. Kelley, the study of this area was undertaken as a master's thesis project. The field work necessary to the project was begun in February, 1957 and completed during the summer of 1957. Mapping was accomplished with the aid of aerial photographs scaled two inches equals one mile. Data were transferred from photographs to a U.S. Soil Conservation Service planimetric map. Strati graphic sections were measured with Brunton compass and a 50-foot steel tape.

Microstratigraphic And Sedimentational Studies Of An Early Man Site Near Lucy, New Mexico, Jerry Harbour Apr 1958

Microstratigraphic And Sedimentational Studies Of An Early Man Site Near Lucy, New Mexico, Jerry Harbour

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The purpose of the study has been to interpret the sedimentary record of the Lucy site deposits in order to establish a climatic sequence into which various cultural zones, especially the Sandia, may be placed, and to date this climatic sequence as accurately as possible. A second purpose has been to establish the reliability of the Pleistocene Lake Estancia shore levels as a regional floating chronology of climatic events, and to correlate the Lucy site sediments with this regional chronology. By means of the Lucy site artifacts, this chronology is partly fixed in time, so as a result of the …

The Photoreduction Of Indigo Carmine Flavin Mononucleotide And Diphosphopyridine Nucleotide, By Illuminated Chloroplasts, M. Odell Hobbs Apr 1958

The Photoreduction Of Indigo Carmine Flavin Mononucleotide And Diphosphopyridine Nucleotide, By Illuminated Chloroplasts, M. Odell Hobbs

Theses and Dissertations

An investigation was made of the photoreduction of indigo carmine dye and flavin mononucleotide (FMN) by an illuminated sugar beet leaf homogenate in the presence of 2,6-dichlorophenolindophenol dye (DPIP) and ascorbic acid. DPIP and ascorbate were absolutely required for the reaction. Reconstitution experiments indicated a requirement for a heat-labile factor present in the supernatant fluid following centrifugation of the leaf homogenate. This factor activated the photoreduction of indigo carmine more than 20 times. The photoreduction of FMN was activated 2 times by this factor. Studies on the stoichiometry of indigo carmine photoreduction revealed that one mole of ascorbate was photooxidized …

On A Theorem Of Hölder, Donald W. Miller Apr 1958

On A Theorem Of Hölder, Donald W. Miller

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

A well-known result, due to Hölder [1], is the following: The symmetric group Sn, has outer automorphisms if and only if n = 6. The classical proof of the existence of a class of outer automorphisms of S6, as formulated by Burnside [2], rests in part on the theory of primitive groups and entails extensive computation. In this note we offer a direct method for constructing such automorphisms. The author is grateful to Professor R. H. Bruck for raising this problem and for subsequent helpful remarks.
