Succession In A Dune Community At Mentor Headlands, Ohio, Harold G. Marshall Jan 1955

Succession In A Dune Community At Mentor Headlands, Ohio, Harold G. Marshall

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Continual sand deposition on the Lake Erie shore, adjacent to the mouth of the Grand River, has led to the formation of a developing sand dune community and through the years a successional pattern of plant growth. An analysis was made of the general plant composition of the area by means of four transects directed from the bare beach inland. Definite zonation of specific plant species was present throughout the community in parallel formation. Named for the dominant plant types they contained, the major stages were: dune grass, poplar, aspen, and oak.

Measurement Of Irrigation Water, Eldon M. Stock Jan 1955

Measurement Of Irrigation Water, Eldon M. Stock

Reports

Foreword: Although irrigation has been practiced in Utah for more than one hundred years, irrigation water still is being distributed to farmers with little or not thought about its measurement. A farmer would not think of buying or selling other farm commodities, such as hay, grain, beef cattle, or dairy products, without weighing or accurately measuring them, but at the same time he is often content to accept and pay for the irrigation water received with little or no knowledge as to the actual amount received, or whether or not he is receiving the amount he is entitled to. Measurement …

Separation Of Germanium, Lead, Zinc, And Cadmium By Anion Exchange, Franklin Maynard Hill Jan 1955

Separation Of Germanium, Lead, Zinc, And Cadmium By Anion Exchange, Franklin Maynard Hill

Masters Theses

"The object of this study was to investigate the ion exchange behavior of germanium and apply the anion exchange technique for the separation of germanium, cadmium, lead, and zinc.

A new interest in germanium has developed because of its recent industrial application as a semi-conductor. Analytical methods for the separation and analysis of germanium in low concentrations have not been perfected. Krause and Johnson, in a recent review, discussed and evaluated a number of methods.

Most of the methods for the analysis of germanium require a preliminary separation. The analytical methods for germanium reported in the literature are troublesome and …

Addition Of Ketene To Ethylene Oxide, John Philip Friedrich Jan 1955

Addition Of Ketene To Ethylene Oxide, John Philip Friedrich

Masters Theses

"The object of this work was to study the reaction between ethylene oxide and ketene, and if possible, to isolate and identify the postulated γ-butyrolactone. Although the results could hardly be described as completely gratifying, they were at least in a sense positive. Many possibilities remain with regard to further modifications of the experimental work on this problem, however it is the author's sincere wish that this investigation will serve some useful purpose in the future"--Introduction, page 4.

Correlation Functions For Use In Small Angle X-Ray Scattering, James Edwin Thomas Jr. Jan 1955

Correlation Functions For Use In Small Angle X-Ray Scattering, James Edwin Thomas Jr.

Masters Theses

"Thus, the determination of the structure of the material, and obtaining a distribution function which will enable the theoretical scattering to be predicted is the major problem.

In this work the diffraction material shall be considered to contain scattering regions of identical geometrical forms at such a distance from one another that they will essentially scatter the incident beam independently of their closest neighbor. An effort will be made to determine a correlation function characteristic of these forms, which may be interpreted as a distribution function, that might allow the low angle scattering pattern to be predicted. This correlation function …

Stream Piracy And Glacial Diversion Of Little Missouri River, North Dakota, Emmett R. Schmitz Jan 1955

Stream Piracy And Glacial Diversion Of Little Missouri River, North Dakota, Emmett R. Schmitz

Theses and Dissertations

Bedrock river terraces, as much as 275 to 500 feet above the present Little Missouri, are remnants of a former floodplain. The presence of these former shallow valley floor (Little Missouri Terrace No. 4) along the pre-glacial channel and east and north of the Killdeer Mountains suggests several pre-glacial rivers.

Peripheral precipitation in advance of the Kansan-Illinoian glacier, head-ward erosion with consequent new gradient breached the divide between the pre-glacial Little Missouri River and the “Medicine Stone” River, (herein named, after a local landmark), which flowed eastward into pre-glacial Missouri River.

The history of that portion of the Little Missouri …

The Thermal Conductivity Of Sodium Chloride At Elevated Temperatures, Howard Martin Brown Jan 1955

The Thermal Conductivity Of Sodium Chloride At Elevated Temperatures, Howard Martin Brown

Masters Theses

"The thermal conductivity of solids has been attributed to a combined effect of the quantized vibration of the lattice points, called phonons, and the flow of valence electrons. In nonconductors the thermal conductivity is due almost entirely to phonons, as was shown by Debye, whereas in metals the conductivity is due mostly to the flow of valence electrons. After Debye, Peierls calculated the lattice conductivity at elevated temperatures using quantum mechanics and demonstrated that it is proportional to 1/T. There are not enough data available to substantiate any theory but what data there are seem to indicate a mixed conductivity …

This report and any related files are made available to the online through the Lester F. Larsen Tractor Test and Power Museum as resources allow. Established in 1998, this museum is located on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln East Campus. It is and appropriately housed within the walls of the historic 1920 Nebraska Tractor Test Laboratory, where the first tractor test was started on March 31st, 1920. Because the pioneer tests became worldwide standards, this location was designated as a Historic Landmark of Agricultural Engineering by the American Society of Agricultural Engineers in 1980, shortly after testing was moved to a …

An Experiment Of The Time Variations Of Cosmic Rays Underground, Mercedes Merner Agogino Oct 1954

An Experiment Of The Time Variations Of Cosmic Rays Underground, Mercedes Merner Agogino

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

Ever since the discovery of cosmic rays, investigations of time variations in their intensity have been carried out in the hope of obtaining information on their nature and origin. Early experiments were somewhat contradictory, but it was soon clear that any variation present could be no longer than a few percent at the most. This meant that experiments had to be carefully planned and carried out over a long period of time to attain the statistical accuracy necessary for clear-cut results. In addition, the influence of the atmosphere and the earth's magnetic field made it very difficult to interpret the …

The Measurement Of The Concentration Of Ozone In The Atmosphere By The Oxidation Of Silver, Albert Goodman Oct 1954

The Measurement Of The Concentration Of Ozone In The Atmosphere By The Oxidation Of Silver, Albert Goodman

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

Under conditions of standard temperature and pressure, it has been found that no reaction occurs between silver and oxygen, nor between silver and ozone. When the temperature of the silver is raised, however, it is oxidized by ozone but not by oxygen. Upon raising the products of the reaction to a still higher temperature, they decompose into silver and ordinary oxygen. By measuring the amount of oxygen thus produced, it would be possible to calculate the amount of ozone involved originally.
