Concerning Rings Of Continuous Functions, Leonard Gillman, Melvin Henriksen
Concerning Rings Of Continuous Functions, Leonard Gillman, Melvin Henriksen
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
The present paper deals with two distinct, though related, questions, concerning the ring C(X, R) of all continuous real-valued functions on a completely regular topological space X.
The first of these, treated in §§1-7, is the study of what we call P-spaces -- those spaces X such that every prime ideal of the ring C(X, R) is a maximal ideal. The background and motivation for this problem are set forth in §1. The results consist of a number of theorems concerning prime ideals of the ring C(X, R) in general, as well as a series of characterizations of P-spaces in …

Evaluations Of Two Proposed Mechanisms Of Cation Adsorption By Silicate Minerals, Norman D. Larsen
Evaluations Of Two Proposed Mechanisms Of Cation Adsorption By Silicate Minerals, Norman D. Larsen
Theses and Dissertations
Previous work done at the Brigham Young University by Andelin^1, Roberts^2, and Olsen^3, has established the mechanism by which xanthate collectors are adsorbed on molybdenite ores to produce the hydrophobic surfaces necessary for flotation. This thesis is an attempt to better understand the mechanism by which the silicate minerals, which are found in conjunction with the ores, become hydrophyllic and as a result are not floated when in contact with air bubbles. It has been previously established that silicate minerals do adsorb cations on their surfaces^4. The present study has been undertaken to more fully understand the mechanism by which …
The Structure Of A Shock Front In Argon, John W. Bond Jr.
The Structure Of A Shock Front In Argon, John W. Bond Jr.
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
If a one-dimensional shock wave travels through argon, the translational degrees of freedom of the atoms are immediately excited and reach translational equilibrium within two collision lengths. If the shock velocity is sufficiently high, energy will be transferred from the translational degrees of freedom to those of electronic excitation and ionization until complete thermal equilibrium exists. The region between the first disturbance in front of the shock and the point at which thermal equilibrium is first realized is the shock front.
The Separation Of Grain By Projection, Robert Katz, E. P. Farrell, Max Milner
The Separation Of Grain By Projection, Robert Katz, E. P. Farrell, Max Milner
Robert Katz Publications
A device is described which effects a continuous separation of internally infested wheat from sound wheat, and which separates wheat into a number of fractions of different test weight. A stream of wheat, projected into still air by rapidly moving belts, is dispersed by the combined effects of air drag and gravitation into numerous fractions which are caught in a series of hoppers. Infested kernels fall short of sound grain and are thus separated. Test weight varies progressively and characteristically with distance from the point of projection.

The Separation Of Grain By Projection. Ii. Systematic Differences In Physical Properties And Composition Of Wheat Fractions, Max Milner, E. P. Farrell, Robert Katz
Robert Katz Publications
Analyses for test weight, 500-kernel weight, protein content, ash content, and hardness characteristics of fractions of 15 samples of hard red winter wheat, obtained by spectrometric separation, revealed high negative correlations in most cases between plumpness factors and protein and ash contents, and high positive correlations between plumpness factors and hardness, when the latter is determined with a single-stage instrument. The projection technique appears to provide a means for analyzing commercially mixed wheat for certain qualities of its components and it may be applied practically to separate either high protein fractions or high test weight fractions from ordinary commercial grain.

Effect Of Recovery On The Recrystallized Grain-Size Of High Purity Aluminum, Rodney L. Helterline
Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
When a cold-worked metal is annealed, it’s physical properties hange as a result of a new grain structure. The annealing treatment is divided into three stages according to the changes that occur in the distorted metal: (1) recovery, (2) recrystallization, and (3) grain growth.
The Exchange Of Antimony Between Antimony Trichloride And Antimony Pentachloride In Carbon Tetrachloride Solution, Franklin Brett Barker
The Exchange Of Antimony Between Antimony Trichloride And Antimony Pentachloride In Carbon Tetrachloride Solution, Franklin Brett Barker
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
In the investigation of any chemical reaction, the main points of interest are the conditions of equilibrium, the rate at which equilibrium is approached, and the mechanisms by which the reaction occurs. The first of these is determined by the standard free energy change, a thermodynamic quantity which depends only upon the initial and final states of the system. However, two reactions having the same value of the standard free energy change may approach equilibrium at radically different rates, one being practically instantaneous and the other almost infinitely slow. The field of chemical kinetics is concerned with the study of …
A Semi-Micro Spectrophotometric Method Of Copper Analysis, Edgar Miller Layton
A Semi-Micro Spectrophotometric Method Of Copper Analysis, Edgar Miller Layton
Honors Theses
The Manhattan Project of the United States atomic energy program was designed essentially to produce methods and instruments of atomic warfare. Out of the many investigations made by the scientists and engineers working to attain this primary goal, much information of value was necessarily placed in the background and, as a consequence, a vast amount of material was only cursorily studied by these workers. The type of relationship between the per cent transmission and concentration decrease was to be investigated in the hope of establishing an empirical formula for use in a certain concentration range. As an added check on …
Electrodeposition And Cathode Potential, Kenneth Frederick Greenough
Electrodeposition And Cathode Potential, Kenneth Frederick Greenough
Honors Theses
When two electrodes are placed in a solution of an electrolyte and a voltage is applied, a continuous current will flow only when the voltage is equal to or greater than the decomposition potential of the electrolyte. At voltages above the decomposition potential, the current is proportional to the applied voltage, i.e. Ohm’s law where I = E/R. At voltages below, there is a temporary flow of current, existing until the products of electrolysis accumulate and produce an opposing voltage, causing the residual current to diminish. A plot of current versus applied voltage is at first almost horizontal, and the …

On A Theorem Of Gelfand And Kolmogoroff Concerning Maximal Ideals In Rings Of Continuous Functions, Leonard Gillman, Melvin Henriksen, Meyer Jerison
All HMC Faculty Publications and Research
This paper deals with a theorem of Gelfand and Kolmogoroff concerning the ring C= C(X, R) of all continuous real-valued functions on a completely regular topological space X, and the subring C* = C*(X, R) consisting of all bounded functions in C. The theorem in question yields a one-one correspondence between the maximal ideals of C and those of C*; it is stated without proof in [2]. Here we supply a proof (§2), and we apply the theorem to three problems previously considered by Hewitt in [5].
Our first result (§3) consists of two simple constructions of the Q-space vX. …

Geology Of The Ragged Point Oil Field Musselshell County, Montana, David M. Amos
Geology Of The Ragged Point Oil Field Musselshell County, Montana, David M. Amos
Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
The Ragged Point oil field is located in Northwest Musselshell County, in the Lake Basin field of central Montana, and on the western border of the Great Plains region. The surface topography is that of a plain marked by erosion and moderate folding. The stratigraphy of central Montana shows periodic marine invasions from the Cordilleran trough, with normal marine limestones interbedded with sandstone sand shales. These sediments are over 12,000 feet thick, with the Cretaceous Eagle and Colorado formations exposed at the surface on the Ragged Point anticline. Undifferentiated Cambrian limestones and shales are the oldest rocks encountered in drilling.
