The Effect Of Grass Reseeding In Sagebrush Lands On Sage Grouse Populations, Richard W. Trueblood May 1954

The Effect Of Grass Reseeding In Sagebrush Lands On Sage Grouse Populations, Richard W. Trueblood

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The particular purpose of this study was to determine the effects of large-scale sagebrush reseeding projects on sage grouse populations and whether such effects were partly or entirely beneficial, neutral, or detrimental to the survival of such populations.

During two seasons of field work, the studies initiated on a short-time basis had the following specific objectives:

  1. To compare the utilization by sage grouse of reseeded and non-reseeded lands for the seasonal activities of mating, nesting, raising a brood, fall coveying, and wintering.
  2. To compare the utilization by sage grouse of reseeded and non-reseeded lands for daily activities of feeding, watering, …

The Effect Of The Bicarbonate Ion On The Respiration Of Excised Roots, Gene W. Miller May 1954

The Effect Of The Bicarbonate Ion On The Respiration Of Excised Roots, Gene W. Miller

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

For many years man has been searching for a cure for lime-induced chlorosis. This disease is prevalent throughout the entire western United States and is characterized by a yellowing of the leaves, destruction of the chlorophyll, and eventual death of the plant. It has brought devastation of fruit orchards in Utah, costing fruit producers millions of dollars. Hardly any county in Utah is free from this destructive nutritional disease.

Growth And Nutrition Of Plants As Affected By Various Levels Of Exchangeable Sodium, Mohammad B. Choudhri May 1954

Growth And Nutrition Of Plants As Affected By Various Levels Of Exchangeable Sodium, Mohammad B. Choudhri

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In saline soils, which are characterized by an appreciable quantity of neutral soluble salts, plant growth is adversely affected due to the increase in osmotic pressure and the consequent decrease in the physiological availability of water. In addition, growth may also be restricted through the accumulation of toxic quantities of various ions within the plant.

On the other hand, alkali soils, whether saline or non-saline, are characterized by a high content of exchangeable sodium in the cation-exchange complex. One reason of low productivity on these soils is the unfavorable physical conditions induced by the dispersing action of the sodium ions. …

The Content Of Essential Amino Acids In 1950 Alfalfa Hay Grown In Utah Soil Treated With Different Fertilizers, Adriana Lanting Kunkel May 1954

The Content Of Essential Amino Acids In 1950 Alfalfa Hay Grown In Utah Soil Treated With Different Fertilizers, Adriana Lanting Kunkel

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Application of fertilizers to soils to increase production yields has raised questions concerning the effect of fertilizer on chemical composition of plants. With the development of accurate, sensitive microbiological methods for the determination of amino acid in protein, speculations concerning amino acid content have been supplanted by acquisition of facts.

The effect of the different fertilizer applications on alfalfa yield has been discussed by Jones, et al (5). Also, some work has been done to determine the effect different fertilizers might have on the amino acid content of plant material. Some values (1,3,12) have been reported for the amino acid …

The Chromatographic Purification Of Human Red Blood Cell Acetylcholinesterase, Richard P. Dunkley May 1954

The Chromatographic Purification Of Human Red Blood Cell Acetylcholinesterase, Richard P. Dunkley

Theses and Dissertations

A process of column chromatography of human erythrocyte acetylcholinesterase, using a cationic exchange resin, was investigated as a possible method for the primary partial purification of the enzyme on a large scale. The investigation was based, first; on a detailed study of the enzymatic stability to variation in hydrogen-ion and salt concentrations for periods of time extending to forty eight hours and, second; on an investigation of the degree of adsorption by the resin of the enzyme at various pH values within the pH range of enzyme stability. A method for the analysis of the enzyme activity of large numbers …

Soil Additives And Their Effect On The Yield Of Various Crops And The Physical Properties Of An Agricultural Soil, Gaylen L. Ashcroft May 1954

Soil Additives And Their Effect On The Yield Of Various Crops And The Physical Properties Of An Agricultural Soil, Gaylen L. Ashcroft

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

It is generally accepted that soil structure is very important in keeping productivity at a high level. When soils are loose and friable, mechanical impedance to root growth and seedling emergence is greatly reduced. Such soils infiltrate greater quantities of precipitation, are better aerated, and possess a more favorable temperature than puddled soils. Essential plant nutrients are also more easily available in well aggregated soil.

In the last few years, several synthetic soil additives have been placed on the market. Extravagant claims have been made about the ability of these amendments to maintain soil structure, without a sound body of …

The Synthesis Of 10-Methyl-3, 4-Benzpyrene And 8,10-Dimethyl-3, 4-Benzpyrene, Jules Adelfang

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

In 1953 Cook, Hewett, and Rieger found a highly carcinogenic hydrocarbon in coal tar. By a variety of solvent extraction methods, fractional distillation, and crystallization several pure hydrocarbons were isolated from the crude pitch. Two new pentacyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were isolated and since only small quantities of them were available it was decided to ascertain their structures by synthesis instead of degradetive experiments. The hydrocarbon samples were obtained with great difficulty from two tons of crude pitch. The problem was simplified since ten of the possible fifteen pentacyclic hydrocarbons were known. From certain similarities of these hydrocarbons to perylene its …

Radioactivity Of Sm153 And Eu155, M. R. Lee, Robert Katz Jan 1954

Radioactivity Of Sm153 And Eu155, M. R. Lee, Robert Katz

Robert Katz Publications

The radiations from Sm153 and Eu155 have been studied by means of a 180-degree, magnetic-focusing, variable-field beta-ray spectrometer-spectrograph using enriched materials. In the disintegration of 47.0-hr Sm153, conversion electrons of three gamma rays of energy, 0.0691, 0.1027, 0.548 Mev, and three beta-ray spectra whose end-point energy and relative intensity were 0.255 Mev, 9 percent; 0.685 Mev, 70 percent; 0.795 Mev, 21 percent, respectively, were observed. A fourth beta-ray spectrum of end-point energy 0.62 Mev and intensity less than 6 percent is postulated. A decay scheme in good agreement with these data and with nuclear shell theory …

Aerial Survey Township Areas, Willford L. Miller

Other Publications in Wildlife Management

In the year 1946, two townships of experimental work in aerial censusing. technique for obtaining complete counts during the winter months.

The aerial survey proved to be very satisfactory when snow conditions are right. At I available cover must be well filled with snow, with very few bare spots in fields or other parts of the area. The birds tend to congregate on such bare places where it is very difficult to see them from the plane.

In 1951 a total of 40 townships were laid out as census plots in different parts of the state. In 1952 six new …
