Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs
The thesis area lies along the eastern base of North Ridge which forms the northern part of the Caballo Mountains. This ridge rises abruptly, about 1,500 feet, above the considerably dissected lowland on which the area is located. The lowland lies near the head of Mescal Canyon and is dissected into the ridges and valley with a relief as much as 300 feet. The drainage is east and north into Mescal Canyon (Pl.2) which joins the Rio Grande just below Elephant Butte Dam.
Hydrogen Bond Energies In Carboxylic Acids, M.M. Jones, W.R. Gilkerson, Gordon A. Gallup
Hydrogen Bond Energies In Carboxylic Acids, M.M. Jones, W.R. Gilkerson, Gordon A. Gallup
Gordon Gallup Publications
A question of interest to the study of the chemisorption of carbon monoxide on iron is whether the carbon is desorbed with the same oxygen to which it was bonded prior to the adsorption. A mixture of C13O and CO18 in the desorbed gas in amounts greater than expected from normal abundance ratios shows that an intermolecular oxygen exchange occurs.

Investigation Into The Synthesis Of Indazole, Max Peter Dreyfuss
Honors Theses
These investigations were undertaken in order to study the effect that various acyl or aroyl groups on o-toluidine have on the yield of indazole, when the latter is prepared by the methods of Barclay, et. al. (1) as modified by Rzeszotarski (23). In addition further information on the mechanism of the reaction and on the structure of indazole was sought from these data.
Electrodeposition With Graded Cathode Potential, William Mairs Earnest
Electrodeposition With Graded Cathode Potential, William Mairs Earnest
Honors Theses
In a constant current electrolysis, which is the unusual method of determining a substance quantitatively by electrodeposition, a single metal, in solution, is plated out on the cathode of the electrolysis cell. The current is maintained fairly constant by adjustment, little attention is paid to the potential applied to the cell. This method may be used if there is only one metal in solution, or it may actually be used to separate two metals if one lies above and the other below hydrogen in the electromotive series. In this case, hydrogen is evolved at the cathode after the deposition of …
A Study Of The Reaction Of Portland Cement With Certain Acids, Robert Alfred Laudise
A Study Of The Reaction Of Portland Cement With Certain Acids, Robert Alfred Laudise
Honors Theses
Portland cement was treated with various concentrations of hydrochloric, acetic, and sulfuric acids. The reaction products, mixed gels of SiO2, Al203, and Fe2O3, were examined for commercial possibilities. Liquid absorption of organic dyes was used as a criterion of surface activity. When 10gm cement was reacted with 100m.l. of acid solution, it was found that the reaction went to completion at 3 molar HCl, 3 normal H2SO4, and about 7-9 molar HAc. The best absorbers for methylene blue were formed by the reaction of 2.5-3 molar HCl and 6-9 molar HAc. The absorption of some of these gels were carefully …

The Inhibition Of The Thermal Polymerization Of Styrene, William Russell Stoll
Honors Theses
In continuing the work of Cohen and Opitz the percent polymer formed by the inhibition of the thermal polymerization of styrene with chloranil at one hundred degrees is determined to be 0.0025%. The first polymer is precipitated by absolute methanol approximately twenty minutes before the end of the induction period. For polymer determination an analytical method is developed, which is applicable for concentrations between 0.001% and 0.022% by weight measures the solution turbidity after precipitation from the monomer. This method can be extended to 0.08% polymer. Polymer percentages to be measured in this manner greater than 0.02% were diluted with …

Preparation Of Vanillic Acid And Some Of Its Metallic Salts, Elaine A. Dittmar
Preparation Of Vanillic Acid And Some Of Its Metallic Salts, Elaine A. Dittmar
Bachelors’ Theses
Very little work has been done with vanillic acid and its derivatives since the time when the acid was first synthesized. There are usually good reasons why compounds showing such important properties as food preservatives have lain idle for over seventy-five years. It is of great. interest to know the reasons behind this idleness and also to attempt to prepare some of the derivatives heretofore unreported.
This is the purpose for which this thesis has been written; that a little more knowledge will be contributed to a relatively virgin field. Submitted are the preparation of vanillic acid and some of …

The Sedimentary Petrography Of The Oil And Gas Producing Horizons In Montana, Patrick J. Donahue
The Sedimentary Petrography Of The Oil And Gas Producing Horizons In Montana, Patrick J. Donahue
Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
Montana is an excellent oil province, as oil and gas are produced from a wider range of beds in the geologic section than in any other district in the United States. (1,864) Commercial fields have been developed in Ordovician, Devonian, Mississippian, Pennsylvanian, Jurassic, Lower Cretaceous, and Upper Cretaceous. It is believed that by describing the physical characteristics of the producing horizons, and by placing this information in one compact volume, a better understanding of oil and gas occurrence in Montana may be gained.

The Birdie Mine Tungsten Deposit Butte Mining District, Silverbow County, Montana, Bernard A. Fahm
Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
The importance of tungsten has encouraged the search for minerals of this metal, and consequently new deposits have been discovered, and known deposits have been re-examined. Western Montana has rather widespread deposits if low-grade types are also considered. Many deposits were known long ago, but abandoned because the use of tungsten was still in its beginning stage and therefore little attention was given to this type of mineral.

The Effect Of Ferric Iron Upon The Current Efficiency And The Deposition Of Copper In The Electrowinning Of Copper From Copper Sulphate Solutions, James L. Owings
Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
In the hydrometallurgy of copper, probably the most widely used method for the precipitation of copper is by electrolysis using insoluble anodes. The process is similar in many respects to the electrolytic refining of copper; one of the main differences is the use of insoluble anodes in electrowinning as compared to the use of impure copper anodes in electrorefining. Impurities, however, are common to both processes. The nature of these impurities differ and the problem of purifying the electrolyte is also different.
