X-Ray Investigation Of The Critical Exponent Η In Argon, Harold D. Bale, J. S. Lin, Duane A. Dolejsi, James L. Casteel, Oran Allan Pringle, Paul W. Schmidt

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Measurements were made of the small-angle x-ray scattering intensity from argon near the critical point. After the scattering curves are corrected for all known effects except those resulting from irrelevant variables, a value of the critical exponent η=0.09±0.02 is obtained, while if a correction for the estimated effect of irrelevant variables is also made, η=0.03±0.03. The scattering data for argon therefore show that if irrelevant variables can be neglected, the critical exponent η for argon is in good agreement with the value obtained by Warkulwiz, Mozer, and Green from small-angle neutron scattering data for neon. These values of η, however, …

³⁴Cl Via The ³²S(³He,P) Reaction, Oleksa-Myron Bilaniuk, D. J. Crozier, H. T. Fortune, R. Middleton

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

The structure of ³⁴Cl has been investigated with the reaction ³²S(³He,p). Angular distributions were obtained for 29 levels below 5 MeV excitation. Extracted L values, combined with previous information, allow J^π assignments of 3⁺ for states at 2181 and 2611 keV, negative parity for the J=4 state at 3600 keV, 2⁻ for the level at 4514 keV, and 3⁻ (2⁻) for states at 4416 and 4461 keV. Two new states are observed at excitation energies of 4693 and 4825 keV. [NUCLEAR REACTIONS ³²S(³He,p),E(³He)=18 MeV; measured σ(Ep,θ); gas H2S target. ³⁴Cl deduced levels, L, J, π.]

Existence And Uniqueness Of Sobolev Type Integrodifferential Equations, M. E. Lord Jul 1977

Existence And Uniqueness Of Sobolev Type Integrodifferential Equations, M. E. Lord

Mathematics Technical Papers

An imbedding method for nonlinear Fredholm integral equations gives rise to a Sobolev type integrodifferential equation. For such equations, sufficient conditions are given to guarantee local existence and uniqueness of solutions. A Picard type theorem utilizing a Lipschitz condition is obtained.

Behavior Of Partial Cross Sections And Branching Ratios In The Neighborhood Of A Resonance, Anthony F. Starace Jul 1977

Behavior Of Partial Cross Sections And Branching Ratios In The Neighborhood Of A Resonance, Anthony F. Starace

Anthony F. Starace Publications

Starting from the treatment of Fano for the behavior of the total cross section in a photoionization (or electron-ion scattering) experiment in the vicinity of a resonance, we present a theoretical formula for the behavior of an individual final-state channel in the neighborhood of a resonance. This result is then used to derive another theoretical formula for the behavior of the ratio of two partial cross sections (i.e., the branching ratio) in the vicinity of a resonance. This branching-ratio formula depends on the profile parameters q, Γ, and ρ2 for the resonance, on the branching ratio outside the resonance, …

Visible atmospheric conditions included classifying the atmosphere as sunny, fair, cloudy, stormy, rainy, and phases of the moon. Invisible conditions recorded were temperature and barometric pressure.

The non-productive behavior variables included were aggression, arguing, attitude, annoying, bathroom abuse, cheating, destructive, clowning, disobedient, disruptive, ill-mannered, inattentive, lying, name calling, playing, rule …

A Seasonal Study Of Phytoplankton Composition Abundance And Productivity In Back Bay, Virginia, Robert Ringgold Comegys Jul 1977

A Seasonal Study Of Phytoplankton Composition Abundance And Productivity In Back Bay, Virginia, Robert Ringgold Comegys

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Phytoplankton samples were collected monthly (August 1974-June 1975) at two stations in the Back Bay system of southeastern Virginia. Measurements of phytoplankton productivity and potentially influencing environmental parameters (water and air temperature, turbidity, depth, pH, salinity, dissolved oxygen) accompanied sample collections. A total of 106 phytoplankton species, representing six algal divisions and 54 genera were identified. Cyanophyta species were dominant at both stations in the warmer months of August, September, October, and June, and in April at one station only. In all remaining months, Chlorophyta species were dominant, indicating a seasonal shift in phytoplankton composition during winter and spring. The …

Sediment Interstitial Dissolved Mercury And Carbon Relationships In An Artificial And Natural Marsh, James River, Virginia, Apostolos Katsaounis

OES Theses and Dissertations

Thirty six sediment cores were collected during August, 1976 and January, 1977 in order to examine the relationships between dissolved organic carbon and total dissolved mercury in the interstitial water of two marshes located near Windmill Point, James River, 16 km downstream from Hopewell, Virginia. The Windmill Point marsh development site is a dredged material disposal island in the James River. The reference marsh which does not contain dredged material, is located 2.3 km upstream at Ducking Stool Point.

The concentrations of dissolved organic carbon and total dissolved mercury showed no significant difference between the two marshes. Trends in the …

An Investigation Of Using Derivation Reaction Gas Chromatography To Measure Anionic Water Quality Parameters, Richard H. Hanson Jun 1977

An Investigation Of Using Derivation Reaction Gas Chromatography To Measure Anionic Water Quality Parameters, Richard H. Hanson

Technical Reports

A new analytical method has been developed which provides researchers with another way to measure orthophosphate content in aqueous samples. The reaction gas chromatographic system was capable of analyzing orthophosphate in the range from 0.25 - 5.0 micrograms of P in 50 microliters of aqueous sample. Flame ionization proved to be the most successful detector. The primary advantage of this technique was the small volume of sample required.

Photoelectron Angular Distributions Of S Electrons In Open-Shell Atoms, Anthony F. Starace, Robert H. Rast, Steven T. Manson Jun 1977

Photoelectron Angular Distributions Of S Electrons In Open-Shell Atoms, Anthony F. Starace, Robert H. Rast, Steven T. Manson

Anthony F. Starace Publications

It is shown that the photoelectron angular distribution of s electrons in an open-shell atom, having outer configuration ns2npq, is not described by the asymmetry parameter β=2, as predicted by more approximate theories, but has dramatic variations with energy even within LS coupling. Calculations for the 3s subshell in Cl are presented as an example.

Petrology And Geochemistry Of Shonkinite, Syenodiorite, And Nepheline Monzonite Of The Island Of Kauai, Hawaii, Henry Gassaway Brown Iv

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Boulders of shonkinite, syenodiorite, and nepheline monzoni te occur on Kauai, Hawaii. Boulders of shonkinite and syenodiorite outcrop 1 mile north of Kalaheo and nepheline monzonite boulders have been found in Wailooa Canyon along Koaie and Waialae streams. Detailed petrographic and bulk-rock and mineral geochemical study of samples collected from each locality suggest crystallization in supercooled nephelinic magmas. Shonkinite probably formed after a moderate degree of supercooling, syenodiorite after a high degree of supercooling, and nepheline monzonite after minimal supercooling. Shonkinite, syenodiorite, and nepheline monzonite probably crystallized in hypabyssal magma chambers beneath vents for Koloa Volcanic Group lavas.

Shonkinite formed …

Final Environmental Statement, Southern Nevada Water Project, Second Stage, U.S. Bureau Of Reclamation

Publications (WR)

The Southern Nevada Water Project, a water supply system for the Las Vegas area, was authorized by the Acts of October 22, 1965, and July 19, 1966 (Public Laws 89-292 and 89-510). These acts authorized staged development. The first stage, completed in 1971, consists of intake facilities at Lake Mead, eight pumping plants, a main aqueduct 2-1/2-miles long, a 4-mile-long tunnel, and 30 miles of pipelines and laterals. The State of Nevada constructed the Alfred Merritt Smith Water Treatment Facility in conjunction with the first stage. The first stage system has the capacity to deliver 132,200 acre-feet per year.

Analysis Of A Gravity Traverse South Of Portland, Oregon, Terry Dean Jones Jun 1977

Analysis Of A Gravity Traverse South Of Portland, Oregon, Terry Dean Jones

Dissertations and Theses

The state gravity maps of Oregon and Washington show a gravity high centered south of Portland, Oregon and a gravity low in the Tualatin Valley to the west disrupting the regional gravity gradient which is controlled by crustal thickening. Detailed gravity surveys done in the Portland area are consistent with the state gravity maps but show considerably more detail. Quantitative interpretation of this data has provided new information on the subsurface structure in this area; recent work has yielded corroborative evidence for a fault zone bounding the east side of the Portland Hills, and has indicated the presence of faults …

Light Scattering Studies Of Transverse Sound Wave And Molecular Motion In Benzonitrile, Scott Whittenburg Jun 1977

Light Scattering Studies Of Transverse Sound Wave And Molecular Motion In Benzonitrile, Scott Whittenburg

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The zero-frequency shear wave dip appearing in the depolarized Rayleigh spectrum in benzonitrile has been studied as a function of concentration and temperature. The solution study was carried out at constant viscosity equal to the viscosity of liquid benzonitrile at each temperature. The result indicates that the presence of shear wave fine structure does not depend on the collective orientational fluctuations. The orientational and vibrational relaxation times of benzonitrile were measured at various concentrations and temperatures. The orientational relaxation times show no concentration dependence at any temperature, suggesting that the pair correlation is negligible at all concentrations. The orientational relaxation …
