A Modified Agar Test Method For Wood Preservatives, Robert Earl Hayes
A Modified Agar Test Method For Wood Preservatives, Robert Earl Hayes
Honors Theses
There are two possible methods by which wood could be protected from the attack of saprophytic fungus growth. Either the conditions can be so controlled as to be unfavorable for the growth of the attacking organism, or the wood can be permeated with a poisonous substance which will in some way disrupt the vital processes of the fungus. It is the obvious that the first suggested preventative would not at all be practical due to the wide geographical range over which wood is used and to the various types of weather conditions to which it may be subjected. Consequently, the …
The Effect Of Added Substances On The Volume Change Of Cement, Owen Eugene Brown
The Effect Of Added Substances On The Volume Change Of Cement, Owen Eugene Brown
Honors Theses
There are many substances which effect the volume change of cement during setting, but the lack of time has limited the number and kind of substances used during this research. The effect of salts, or electrolytes, is shown, varying not only the valence of the cation, but also the valence of the anion. A relatively small portion of the existing salts was employed in this work, but they were so chosen as to give a complete picture of their effect on the volume change of cement.
Inhibition Of The Thermal Polymerization Of Styrene, Lester Allan Cohen
Inhibition Of The Thermal Polymerization Of Styrene, Lester Allan Cohen
Honors Theses
The purpose of this work is to study the rate of reaction and mechanism of various inhibitors in the thermal, uncatalyzed polymerization of styrene. Other attempts have been made to study the inhibitory process, the most recent making use of a dilatometer to measure volume changes during the course of polymerization. However, this method, and others, represents indirect means of study. The spectrophotometric method of study presented here, offers a simple and direct method for determining the rate of disappearance of an inhibitor in the inhibition process, and also affords a method calculating the rate constants for the initiation stage …
The Correlation Of The Ultraviolet Absorption Spectra Of Benzotriazole With Its Molecular Structure, John Edward Fagel Jr.
The Correlation Of The Ultraviolet Absorption Spectra Of Benzotriazole With Its Molecular Structure, John Edward Fagel Jr.
Honors Theses
The purpose of this research was to derive, on a theoretical basis, a correlation between the ultraviolet absorption spectra and the molecular structure of benzotriazole. The ultraviolet spectra of buffered aqueous solutions of benzotriazole at numerous pH values from strong acid to strong base have been determined with a Model DU Beckman Spectrophotometer, and an attempt has been made to correlate these spectra with the molecular structure of the compound. As a check on the validity of the theory proposed in correlating the absorption spectra with the molecular structure, the spectra of a 5, (6) – chlorobenzotriazole have been determined …

Study Of The Hofmann Reaction Between Sodium Hypochlorite And Succinamide. Preparation Of Isopropylidene Bis-Phenylen Oxydiacetic Acid. Preparation Of Polyamides, Frederick E. Heinemann
Honors Theses
In the Hofmann reaction between succinamide and potassium hypobromite, small yields of dihydrouracil have been obtained. From the reaction of succinamide and sodium hypochlorite it was hoped that larger yields of the dihydrouracil could be obtained and through spectrophotometry identify the compound further.
Preparation Of 2, 4-Dichloro-Α-Chlorostyrene, Walter A. Neumann
Preparation Of 2, 4-Dichloro-Α-Chlorostyrene, Walter A. Neumann
Honors Theses
Styrene and various substituted styrenes have found wide application in the formation of polymers and copolymers, such as synthetic rubbers. Substituted styrenes have been investigated in attempts to develop polymers with special physical properties, a high dielectric constant for an example. α-methylstyrenes have been successfully copolymerized by Bachman and Finholt while α-chlorostyrene seems unreactive toward polymerizing agents.
Iodine Monochloride Investigations, Julian Richard Mayer
Iodine Monochloride Investigations, Julian Richard Mayer
Honors Theses
The purpose of the research was to investigate the reactions of iodine monochloride with non-aromatic and aromatic compounds. The role which this reagent plays in these reactions, the use of various catalysts, and the products obtained were to be studied. It was the immediate object of these investigations to attempt a synthesis of cyclohenzyl iodine directly from cyclohezene using iodine monochloride as the iodinating agent. In studying the non-aromatic compounds in this project, cyclohexene was chosen since it is readily available and yields a single product upon mono-substitution. The major portion of this thesis is concerned with the reaction which …

This the sis is directed toward.a introducing the reader to the most recent advances in fluorine chemistry by briefly outlining the techniques and procedures thus far used in the synthesizing fluoroorganic compounds, and also the technical and physical limitations in using various types of fluorinating agents.
The reader will be introduced to a new form of synthesis whereby fluorine can be added to the aromatic nucleus of organic compounds that are of the hydroquinone and benzoquinone structure. The fluorine of such an addition will be part of the fluoborate radical. It is hoped that such an approach as the benzoquinone-fluoboric …
Rhenium And Rhenium-Nickel Alloys As Hydrogenation Catalysts, Norma Connell Bowen
Rhenium And Rhenium-Nickel Alloys As Hydrogenation Catalysts, Norma Connell Bowen
Masters Theses
The use of the element rhenium and its compounds for catalytic work is suggested by the position of the metal in the periodic table. Very little experimental work has been done, however, in the field of rhenium catalysis. Compounds of rhenium, as well as the metallic form, both supported and unsupported have been tried for oxidation, dehydration, dehydrogenation and hydrogenations reactions.

Importance Of Unconformities To Oil Occurrence In Montana, Robert E. Evenson
Importance Of Unconformities To Oil Occurrence In Montana, Robert E. Evenson
Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
Although the majority of geologic structures in Montana have been tested in the search for petroleum, only a few have been found to contain commercial quantities of either oil or gas, and with each successive dry hole, producers are becoming more and more wary of investing capital in new wells located on structural features alone. It is apparent that if new oil and gas fields are to be found in Montana, exploration must be done on the basis of something other than structure, or combined with structure.
Foraminifera From The Colorado Shale Near Sunburst, Montana, Frank R. Reynolds
Foraminifera From The Colorado Shale Near Sunburst, Montana, Frank R. Reynolds
Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
One of the many secrets which planet Earth has jealously kept from its inhabitants is the microscopic fossil form known as the foraminifer. It hides in common shale, awaiting the patient and painstaking searcher. In furthering the study of the foraminifera of the Colorado group of formations in Northern Montana, the United States Geological Survey has collected several suites of shale samples from the Sunburst Dome, five to ten miles south of the Canadian border and twenty-five miles north of the city of Shelby, Montana.
A Study Of The Effect Of The Maximum Melt Temperatures Upon The Degree Of Supercooling Of Gallium, Wilfred E. Nagel
A Study Of The Effect Of The Maximum Melt Temperatures Upon The Degree Of Supercooling Of Gallium, Wilfred E. Nagel
Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
If, in a system at a given temperature, there should occur a decrease in free energy and this decrease does not take place, then the resulting condition of the system is termed supercooling. A common example of the phenomenon is found in the liquid-to-solid transition of many substances, when the temperature of the liquid may be lowered below its freezing point without solidification. Similar phenomenon occurs in the gas-to- liquid, gas-to-solid, and polymorphic transformations.
Fauna And Stratigraphy Of The Meagher Formation At Three Localities In Southwestern Montana, William J. Van Matre

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
The batholith is dated as Paleocene or early Eocene. The rocks of the batholith in this area are classified as ranging from quartz-granodiorite to granodiorite. Variation in mineral content causes a chance in color tone from light to dark gray. swarms of inclusions occur in the igneous rock near the contact.
Foraminifera Of The Colorado Shale At Fort Benton, Montana, Robert E. Willson
Foraminifera Of The Colorado Shale At Fort Benton, Montana, Robert E. Willson
Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
Shale is known to be a source-bed for oil, and the Colorado shale which is over 2000 feet thick in places may well be the source for the oil which is now accumulated in the included or closely associated sandstones. A thorough study of the fossil content may not only be helpful in correlation of Cretaceous sediments, but it likewise may be the starting point for studies -which could eventually lead to the discovery of unknown mineral deposits.

A Study Of The Use Of The Dicyanatodipyridine (Ii) Complex For The Determination Of Cyanate, Jean Mcclelland
A Study Of The Use Of The Dicyanatodipyridine (Ii) Complex For The Determination Of Cyanate, Jean Mcclelland
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
Treadwell states in his text, Analytical Chemistry, Volume II, that "the only method for examining cyanates consists in determining the amount of carbon and nitrogen present by combustion." A review of the available literature shows that, although this is not literally true, a procedure for this quantitative determination of small amounts of cyanates in the presence of interfering substances is lacking.
A survey of the literature yielded few references for instrumental methods for the quantitative determination of cyanates. Ripan-Tilici published a method for the determination of cyanates poteniometrically, but attempts to duplicate her work have failed. Madame Tilici, in …
The Syntheses And Ultraviolet Absorption Spectra Of 2-Imidazolines, 2-Imidazolidones And Imidazolidines, Robert J. Ferm
The Syntheses And Ultraviolet Absorption Spectra Of 2-Imidazolines, 2-Imidazolidones And Imidazolidines, Robert J. Ferm
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
The first method used to prepare 2-imidazolines was through the reaction of aromatic aldehydes with ammonia. Amarin, which is known as 2,4,5-triphenyl-2-imidazoline, was the first compound reported to be prepared in this manner. This type of reaction has since been widely studied 2,3,4,5,6 in connection with the preparation of 2,4,5-triarylimidazolines. Furfural and ammonia have also been reported to react in a similar manner. Amarin has also been obtained from the reaction of a mixture of benzil, ammonia, and benzaldehyde.

A Study Of An Inverse Feed-Back, Low Frequency, Low-Pass Filter, Ralph A. Nobles
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
In connection with other research work in the physics department at the University of New Mexico it became of interest to make a detailed study of a resistance-capacitance couples low-pass filter which incorporate inverse feed-back. In order to determine the effect of the inverse feed-back on the filters, calculations are made on circuits with and without feed-back. Response curves are calculated for step-wave inputs and for sine-wave inputs, and these calculated curves then compared with experimental response curves.

A New Method Of Detecting Low Intensity Nuclear Radiation, Emerson Jones
A New Method Of Detecting Low Intensity Nuclear Radiation, Emerson Jones
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
In general there exist in the energy level scheme of many of the elements, transitions which give rise to the liberation of energy in the visible or near visible spectra. This situation gave rise to the hope that a gaseous element could be selected such that upon being excited or ionized by charged particle radiation, the predominant transitions to lower energy levels could be detected by photographic means. If a means of detecting these transitions could be made sufficiently sensitive, one could then hope to detect very low radiation intensities of charged particles. The problem consisted of evacuating a chamber, …
A Mineral Dressing Study Of The Benefication Of Philipsburg Manganese Carbonate Ore, Frank M. Antonioli
A Mineral Dressing Study Of The Benefication Of Philipsburg Manganese Carbonate Ore, Frank M. Antonioli
Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
The beneficiation of rhodochrosite ore to the extent that it is suitable for nodulizing and subsequent use in the steel industry is intriguing. Such ores from certain mines is relatively easy to beneficiate, but the rhodo-chrosite ore from several deposits of the Philipsburg district has never been successfully up-graded by any of the several known beneficiating methods.
The Isothermal Transformation Curve For S.A.E. 6150, Charles Arentzen
The Isothermal Transformation Curve For S.A.E. 6150, Charles Arentzen
Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
More than 3000 years ago, men began quenching and tempering tools to improve their physical properties. The ancient people found that iron was easier to shape and form in a heated condition. Charcoal was used as the fuel, and when the shaping process was completed, the smiths cooled the piece in the most obvious way, quenching in water. Quite unintentionally, these people stumbled on the process for improving the properties of iron, and the art of blacksmithing began.
The Preparation And Properties Of Aromatic Ditellurides, Roger Sanftner
The Preparation And Properties Of Aromatic Ditellurides, Roger Sanftner
Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs
All attempts to arrive at a conclusion as to the structure of the ditellurides by chemical means were unsuccessful. It was found that the ditelluride either failed to enter into reaction, or it reacted with the elimination of tellrium. It is thought, however, that a spectrophotometric analysis of the bromine addition would furnish some information concerning the ditelluride structure.
