Stratigraphy Of The Lower Atoka Formation, Crawford County, Arkansas, John G. Chapman, James P. Thornton, Doy L. Zachry
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
The Atoka Formation (Pennsylvanian) of northwestern Arkansas is a complex succession of sandstone and shale units. Sandstone units in surface sections near the base of the formation in northern Crawford and southern Washington Counties may be correlated with units in the subsurface of the Arkoma Basin. The basal sandstone units of the Atoka Formation as recognized in the Arkoma Basin are correlated with thin, discontinuous sandstones within the Trace Creek Member of the Bloyd Formation in surface exposures to the north. Vertical grain size profiles, electric log profiles and the configuration of thickness trends suggest that lower Atoka sandstone units …

Calculations are presented which include exactly the effects of fringing fields on the electric-field-induced quantum beats of atomic hydrogen. The results explain some recently observed phaseshifts of the quantum beats relative to the predictions of the 'sudden approximation'. The general features produced by finite rise-time and overshoot are discussed.

The power of the Young tableau scheme for labeling a complete spin-adapted basis set in the theory of complex spectra lies in one's ability to evaluate matrix elements of irreducible tensor operators directly in terms of the tableau labels and shapes. We show that the matrix-element rules stated by Harter for one-body operators can be easily derived from simple vector-coupling considerations. The graphical method of angular momentum analysis is used to derive closed-form expressions for the matrix elements of two-body operators. This study yields several interesting new relationships between spin-dependent operators and purely orbital operators. © 1977 The American Physical …

The spin-orbit parameters for the sextet states of the f5 configuration are computed using the Young-tableau techniques developed by Harter. The conceptual and computational advantages over traditional methods are discussed. © 1977 The American Physical Society.

In this paper Lipschitz spaces of distributions are defined and various inclusion relations are shown. Certain properties such as completeness, separability, and the density of the testing space for appropriate Lipschitz spaces are proved. The Littlewood-Paley function is defined and used to prove inclusion relationships between Lipschitz and Lebesgue spaces.

The molecular structures and bond energies in the low-lying excited states of n-alkanes from methane to n-pentane are investigated using the semi-empirical INDO method with configuration interaction. In general the calculated geometries and bond energies are consistent with the known threshold photochemistry of these molecules, the only exception being the prediction of vicinal (rather than geminal) elimination of H2 in ethane. It appears that INDO overestimates the amount of angular distortion in these excited states.

Kinetics Of The Alkaline Tetramer Dimer Dissociation In Liganded Human Hemoglobin: A Laser Light-Scattering Stopped-Flow Study, D. P. Flamig, L. J. Parkhurst

The first-order dissociation of tetrameric HbCO to the dimer has been studied over the pH range 10.30-11.57 in a light-scattering stopped-flow apparatus using argon-ion laser excitation. The first-order dissociation rate constant varies from 0.25 sec-1 to 24.0 sec-1 over this pH interval. A semilogarithmic plot of k versus pH has a slope of 2.56 at pH 11.07, the midpoint. The pH dependence of the dissociation of the tetramer is consistent with progressive titration of α1-α2 and β1-β2 salt bridges. At pH 10.66, the dissociation rates of HbO2, HbCO, methemoglobin, and …

Solar heat is the acknowledged driving force for climatic change. However, ice sheets are also capable of causing climatic change. This property of ice sheets derives from the facts that ice and rock are crystalline whereas the oceans and atmosphere are fluids and that ice sheets are massive enough to depress the earth's crust well below sea level. These features allow time constants for glacial flow and isostatic compensation to be much larger than those for ocean and atmospheric circulation and therefore somewhat independent of the solar variations that control this circulation. The prediction of future water quality conditions in and downstream from a proposed impoundment is dependent upon a myriad of physical, chemical and biological phenomena. It is known from limnology (science of lakes) that all physicochemical and biological functions are greatly controlled or influenced by lake hydro-dynamics, lake thermodynamics, and the quality of inflowing water.

This design memorandum presents the results of several studies undertaken to provide an understanding of present and potential future water quality conditions within and downstream from Dickey and Lincoln School Lakes in accordance with the requirements of ETL 1110-2-1402, dated 12 November 1976. Included are an examination of baseline water quality conditions and the findings of qualitative and quantitative predictive analyses performed to evaluate water quality conditions during all phases of the project's lifetime. This document will also serve as a reference for the water quality portions of the project Environmental Impact Statement.

This draft EIS address the impacts of the dams and appurtenant structures. The marketing and transmission of power from Federal projects are the statutory responsibility of the Department of the Interior. Accordingly, they are conducting transmission line studies in the preparation of a draft EIS. The draft EIS for transmission line and marketing is scheduled to be submitted to the Council on Environmental Quality in February 1978. Both drafts will be combined and submitted as a Final Environmental Impact Statement in August 1978.

The overall project area can be described as a very quiet natural area remote from any major industrial activity, but subject to high traffic noise levels along the main road. Noise sensitive areas consist of low density residential areas in the villages and widely spaced residences along the main road. The estimated yearly average Ldn for all noise sensitive areas 1s 60 dB due to the close proximity of traffic to all residences. The yearly average Ldn decreases to 40 dB at 600 ft from the main road, and to 30 dB 1n the timberland areas.

The Dickey-Lincoln Hydroelectric Dam is a water resources project proposed by the Federal Government (U. S. Army Corps of Engineers). Therefore, in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act, the Corps of Engineers is required to prepare an environmental impact statement (EIS) on the project. A federal plan or project such as Dickey-Lincoln should take into account its effect upon man's health, safety, welfare and economic well-being, as well as effects upon the surrounding environment. Two dams are proposed on the St. John River in northern Maine: Dickey, a high earth filled dam immediately above the confluence of the Allagash with the St. John, will have an installed generating capacity of 760 MW; and Lincoln School Dam, 11 miles downstream, a capacity of 70 MW. These dams are scheduled for completion during the mid 1980's. The U.S. Corps of Engineers, New England Division, has been allocated funds to design the project and prepare their own environmental impact statement. Having determined the effects of the project, a second objective is to discuss mitigation of defined adverse impacts. More specifically, this study attempts to identify adverse impacts and deal with how to minimize such impacts if at all possible.
