The Synthesis And Physical Properties Of Several Aromatic Fluorides, Charles J. Basso Jan 1949

The Synthesis And Physical Properties Of Several Aromatic Fluorides, Charles J. Basso

Bachelors’ Theses

Since the advent of the Manhattan Project, more attention is being focused on fluorine compounds. Most of the inorganic fluorides are well known and are being used daily in industry. However, the realm of organic fluorides has not been investigated much up until recently, mainly because of the lack of safe and efficient fluorination reactions. Only within the last twenty-five years have reliable, indirect methods of fluorination been developed.

The purpose of this thesis is to give an outline of the most important fluorination processes, speaking of laboratory scale operations. The author illustrates the synthesis of an· aromatic fluoride by …

A Scheme Of Analysis For The Ceric Rare Earths, Herschel Gordon Frye Jan 1949

A Scheme Of Analysis For The Ceric Rare Earths, Herschel Gordon Frye

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The elements numbered 57 to 71 have presented a problem in analytical chemistry unparalleled by that of any other group since their discovery over the span of the nineteenth century. The striking similarities in chemical behavior of the fifteen elements comprising this series have almost completely baffled analysts in every attack, and it is only with the increased use of those newer methods, best described as being of a strictly physical nature, that much real progress has been achieved. Where time-honored classical wet methods have failed rather disappointingly, newer methods based upon the use of the spectrograph and similar instruments …

Studies Of Some Reactions Of Quinoxaline, 2-Methyl-, And 2,3-Dimethylquinoxaline, Delos Edward Bown Jan 1949

Studies Of Some Reactions Of Quinoxaline, 2-Methyl-, And 2,3-Dimethylquinoxaline, Delos Edward Bown

Theses and Dissertations

Although many compounds have been prepared which contain the heterocyclic nucleus known as the quinoxaline nucleus, very little fundamental experimentation has been reported by way of expanding the chemistry of quinoxaline beyond the basic condensation reaction and its valuable use as a means of characterization, for example, the reaction of vicinal diketones with o-phenylenediamine. Also, no know effort has been made to assemble the chemistry of the quinoxalines into one paper for ready reference. Additional interest is concerned with the chemotherapeutic value of basically substituted quinoxalines^1; however, this aspect of the problem will not be discussed. The chemistry of quinoxaline …

Lime Creek is located (Fig. 1) in southwestern Nebraska in the southeastern part of Frontier County. It is a tributary of Medicine Creek which in turn is a tributary to the Republican …

Studies In Quantitative Paleontology: I. Some Aspects Of The Theory And Practice Of Quantitative Invertebrate Paleontology, Benjamin H. Burma Nov 1948

Studies In Quantitative Paleontology: I. Some Aspects Of The Theory And Practice Of Quantitative Invertebrate Paleontology, Benjamin H. Burma

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

For some time there has been a noticeable trend toward a more strictly quantitative outlook in paleontology. In view of many special circumstances encountered in dealing with fossil material, there is a rather extended consideration here given to the theoretical background of the quantitative method as applied to fossil invertebrates. First there is a consideration of the relations between sampling theory and paleontology. This is followed by a discussion of variability in populations and the problem of inference from sample to population. A consideration is next given to the species concept and a comparison of the units which can be …

The Possibility Of A Land Bridge Across Nebraska In Mississippian Time, E. C. Reed Jul 1948

The Possibility Of A Land Bridge Across Nebraska In Mississippian Time, E. C. Reed

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The lithologic and paleontologic differences between the Mississippian sediments of the Mid-Continent region and those of the northern Rocky Mountain and Black Hills regions suggest either that the Mississippian seas were not directly continuous between these two regions or that sea connections were greatly restricted. The purpose of this paper is to present and analyze the available subsurface data in Nebraska and surrounding states in the light of this problem. The study is primarily lithologic. Mississippian sediments are known to be widely distributed in the subsurface of much of Iowa and Kansas, in southeastern and extreme southwestern Nebraska, and in …

Mississippian-Pennsylvanian Boundary Problems In The Rocky Mountain Region, James Steele Williams Jul 1948

Mississippian-Pennsylvanian Boundary Problems In The Rocky Mountain Region, James Steele Williams

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

A variety of paleontologic and stratigraphic problems are presented by rocks near the Mississippian- Pennsylvanian boundary in the central and northern Rocky Mountains. Stratigraphic sections of these rocks show diverse interpretations of fundamental concepts of stratigraphy and paleontology. In many places where Upper Mississippian rocks directly underlie Pennsylvanian rocks it is difficult to determine the precise location of the boundary between these units. Formations that straddle the boundary are very useful and satisfactory over large areas. Most geologists use various types of lithologic criteria to distinguish formations, but some appear to rely mainly on faunal data, unconformities, or attempts to …

The Influence Of Certain Factors In Urine On The Viscosity Of Gelatin, Leonard Driss Jul 1948

The Influence Of Certain Factors In Urine On The Viscosity Of Gelatin, Leonard Driss

Bachelors’ Theses

After reading the Masters Thesis of Mr. Herman L. Karl, the writer became interested in this problem and then took · up the study of the proteolytic activity of normal urine. Mr. Karl worked on the urine of pregnant women. Using gelatin as a substrate, he hoped to find a difference in proteolytic activity between the urine of a woman pregnant with a male fetus and the urine of a woman pregnant with a female fetus. His results were not conclusive but suggested that the problem of proteolytic action of urine should be studied under normal conditions.

A Study Of The Replacement Of The Aryl Amino Group By Hydrogen Using Isopropyl Nitrite, Frederick B. Budnik

Honors Theses

The use of the amino group as a directing agent in the synthesis of many aryl compounds is a well known and often used process. Therefore a simple and efficient method of removing the amino group after it has served its purpose is to be desired. The purpose of this work has been to investigate the possibilitiy of deaminating using dilute solutions and isopropyl nitrite as a diazotizing agent. The method of reacting as well as the use of different reactants was studied.

A Study Of Silica-Alumina Gels, Howard W. Bishop Jun 1948

A Study Of Silica-Alumina Gels, Howard W. Bishop

Honors Theses

The general purpose of this investigation has been to obtain data concerning the preparation of and the time of set of a silica-alumina gel. Much work has been done here at Union College in studying the effects of temperature, hydrogen-ion concentration, presence and concentration of certain impurities, and other factors upon the time of set of a silica gel mixture. In these experiments, we used a silica gel mixture whose concentration of silica was the same as that used in these previous experiments, but we mixed with it enough alumina to form a final silica-alumina gel mixture whose mol ratio …

The Alkylation Of Dimethylaniline With Ethylene Glycol Sulfite, John R. Draves Jun 1948

The Alkylation Of Dimethylaniline With Ethylene Glycol Sulfite, John R. Draves

Honors Theses

The alkylation of ter.-amines with alkylchlorosulfinates and alkylsulfites has been of interest in producing various betaine salts. Most of the work reported in the literature had been with ter.-aliphatic amines, amino acids, pyridine, straight-chain sulfites, and chlorosulfinates. No work has been reported on the alkylation of ter.-aromatic amines with cyclic sulfites and the betaine salts produced. The purpose of this investigation was to isolate and characterize the betaine salt produced by the alkylation of a ter.-aromatic amine with a cyclic sulfite. The reaction chosen was that between dimethylaniline and ethylene glycol sulfite.
