The Late Cenozoic Geology Of West-Central Minnesota From Moorhead To Park Rapids, Roderic L. Perkins

Theses and Dissertations

Based on lithostratigraphic and geomorphic information, the Quaternary history of an area bounded by the Red River of the North, 95°00' west longitude, 47°00' and 46°45' north latitude in west central Minnesota, includes seven geologic episodes:

Glacial advances and retreats over all or part of the study area occurred during the first six geologic episodes. The glaciers advanced either southward across northern Minnesota, entering the study area from the northeast; or across eastern North Dakota and southwestern Manitoba, entering the study area from the northwest. As a result of these glacial events the sediment of Unit A, Sebeka Formation, New …

Western North Dakota Lignite Strip Mining Processes And Resulting Subsurface Characteristics, Laramie M. Winczewski Jan 1977

Western North Dakota Lignite Strip Mining Processes And Resulting Subsurface Characteristics, Laramie M. Winczewski

Theses and Dissertations

Data on subsurface conditions obtained prior to strip mining is useful in planning effective mining and reclamation procedures as well as predicting the subsurface characteristics after reclamation. The redistribution of the overburden sediments is less predictable, however.

Through field observations, the major mining factors controlling subsurface structure and overburden sediment redistribution were determined. These include the geometry of the coal body, pit sequence, pit curvature, overburden thickness and managerial input. At a given location, however, the detailed structures and distribution of sediment types within a waste bank were observed to depend upon the dragline cutting pattern, distance between dragline positions, …

Stratigraphy And Paleontology Of The Upper Cretaceous Morden Member (Vermilion River Formation) In The Outcrop Area, Northeastern North Dakota, Fredrick D. Wosick Jan 1977

Stratigraphy And Paleontology Of The Upper Cretaceous Morden Member (Vermilion River Formation) In The Outcrop Area, Northeastern North Dakota, Fredrick D. Wosick

Theses and Dissertations

The Late Cretaceous Morden Member is the oldest exposed bedrock unit in North Dakota, cropping out in eastern Cavalier County in the northeastern part of the state. The Morden overlies the Greenhorn Formation and underlies the Niobrara Formation. The Canadian Morden Member of the Vermilion River Formation is used in lieu of the Carlile Formation because of the lithologic similarity and proximity to the Morden type area, and the distance from the Carlile Formation type section in southeastern Colorado.

Three principal sections were measured and sampled at 2-meter intervals for microfaunal and lithologic analysis. A single well was used for …

Effect Of Compliant Wall Motion On Turbulent Boundary Layers, Dennis M. Bushness, Jerry N. Hefner, Robert L. Ash Jan 1977

Effect Of Compliant Wall Motion On Turbulent Boundary Layers, Dennis M. Bushness, Jerry N. Hefner, Robert L. Ash

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

A critical analysis of available compliant wall data which indicated drag reduction under turbulent boundary layers is presented. Detailed structural dynamic calculations suggest that the surfaces responded in a resonant, rather than a compliant, manner. Alternate explanations are given for drag reductions observed in two classes of experiments: (1) flexible pipe flows and (2) water-backed membranes in air. Analysis indicates that the wall motion for the remaining data is typified by short wavelengths in agreement with the requirements of a possible compliant wall drag reduction mechanism recently suggested by Langley. Stability Constants Of Naco3-, Naso4- And Kco3- In Water At 25°C, Frank Dennis Blum

Masters Theses

A new method for determining ion association constants in aqueous solutions using ion selective electrodes has been developed. This method has been applied to the NaCO3-, NaSO4- and KCO3- ion pairs at 25°C. Association constants for NaCO3- and NaSO4- were determined at various ionic strengths and extrapolated to zero ionic strength to yield 2.2 ± 0.2 for NaCO3- and 5.3 ± 0.4 for NaSO4-. Values for the association constants at an ionic strength near sea water (I=0.70) were calculated to be 1.7 ± 0.1 …

An Investigation Of The Plume Theories Of Briggs And Hanna, George Kyle Cooper Jan 1977

An Investigation Of The Plume Theories Of Briggs And Hanna, George Kyle Cooper

Masters Theses

Many models have been developed for or applied to the prediction of mechanical draft cooling tower plumes. However, due to a serious lack of data up to this date, little has been done to verify the predictive capability of these mathematical models. This thesis attempts to rectify this situation somewhat by undertaking a thorough investigation of the plume theories of G. A. Briggs and S. R. Hanna. A study of their theoretical foundations and development, practical formulations, and ability to predict the height and length of the visible portion of mechanical-draft cooling tower plumes is undertaken. Detailed derivations of their …

Reactions Of 1-Bromo-2-(P-Tolyl)Cyclopropane With Nucleophiles In The Presence Of Crown Ether, Gerald Mccomas Jan 1977

Reactions Of 1-Bromo-2-(P-Tolyl)Cyclopropane With Nucleophiles In The Presence Of Crown Ether, Gerald Mccomas

Masters Theses

Reactions of 1-bromo-2-(p-tolyl)cyclopropane with potassium acetate in the presence of crown ether in various solvents (DMSO, t-butanol, and toluene) have been examined. No cyclopropyl products were observed, only ring-opened p-methylsinnamyl acetates. The trans 1-bromo-2-(p-tolyl)cyclopropane isomer reacts about 3.8 times faster than the cis isomer in DMSO, but only about 1.5 times faster in t-butanol, seemingly related to solvation factors in the transition state. Although stability studies indicated that p-methylcinnamyl bromide might be an intermediate, the rate of formation of this compound in the absence of potassium acetate was much lower than rate of product formation even in the presence of …

Involvement Of Hemerythrin Sulfhydryl Groups In Heavy Atom Binding And Subunit Interactions, Suzanne Elizabeth Clarke Jan 1977

Involvement Of Hemerythrin Sulfhydryl Groups In Heavy Atom Binding And Subunit Interactions, Suzanne Elizabeth Clarke

Dissertations and Theses

Hemerythrin is a respiratory protein found in the erythrocytes of certain marine invertebrates. Structures have been obtained by x-ray crystallography for hemerythrins from Phascolopsis gouldii (P. gouldii) and Themiste dyscritum (T. dyscritum). Since many proteins are inactivated upon binding heavy metals such as mercury, an investigation of mercury-protein interactions in this protein was undertaken. In order to understand the nature of heavy-metal protein interactions in T. dyscritum it was necessary to identify the metalloprotein ligands since neither the liganding amino acid residues nor the geometry of the mercury complexes could be identified in the crystallographic studies.

The Geology Of The Searchlight Mining District, Clark County, Nevada, John Stewart Bown Jan 1977

The Geology Of The Searchlight Mining District, Clark County, Nevada, John Stewart Bown

Masters Theses

"The general area of the Searchlight mining district has been the object of various studies by geologists since 1861. The Searchlight district is located in southern Clark County, Nevada in the eastern part of the Mojave Desert at the southern end of the Eldorado Mountains. Southern Clark County is characterized by a lack of Paleozoic and Mesozoic rocks. A Precambrian complex of rocks mostly gneiss in the southwest corner of the district is non-conformably overlain by Tertiary extrusive rocks about 8,500 feet (2,590 meters) thick consisting of andesite, basalt, rhyolite, and pyroclastics. Both the gneiss and volcanic assemblage were intruded …

Lower Mississippian Sedimentation In Northwestern Montana, Forest E. Haines

Doctoral Dissertations

"Thirty-three measured sections, nine with thin sections and insoluble residues, were studied to determine the depositional history of the Allan Mountain Limestone and the lower member of the Castle Reef Dolomite of the Madison Group in northwestern Montana.

The Allan Mountain base is a fossiliferous limestone, herein named the Brownback Gulch Member, which thickens and becomes cherty to the southwest where the section at Lone Butte resembles that of the Bridger Range Waulsortian-type reefs. A crinoidal lag deposit marks a dis- conformity at the top. In the overlying silty limestone member a thin black shale (Unit 1) grades into normal …

Glacial Stratigraphy Of Southeastern North Dakota, Michael Camara Jan 1977

Glacial Stratigraphy Of Southeastern North Dakota, Michael Camara

Theses and Dissertations

Seven lithostratigraphic units are recognized in the glacial sediment {till) of southeastern North Dakota. Five of these units are not formally named; eventually most of these units will be correlated with formations in surrounding regions. Two of these units, Gardar and Dahlen, are formations recognized in northeastern North Dakota {Hobbs, 1975). The seven lithostratigraphic units are differentiated and correlated using the percentage of the sand, silt, and clay fractions of the till and using the proportion of igneous and metamorphic rock fragments, limestone and dolomite fragments, and shale fragments in the very-coarse-sand fraction (1 to 2 mm) of the till. …

Groundwater In The Wheatbelt, E P. O'Driscoll Dec 1976

Groundwater In The Wheatbelt, E P. O'Driscoll

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

In general six factors affect the occurence of groundwater; rainfall, topography, rock type, rock structurs, vegetation, and local evaporation.

Variation in even one of these can affect the potential yield of a bore or well, the groundwater salinity, and even whether any groundwater occurs at all.

A Proof Of Convergence For The Tridiagonal Ql Algorithm In Floating-Point Arithmetic, James George Sanderson Dec 1976

A Proof Of Convergence For The Tridiagonal Ql Algorithm In Floating-Point Arithmetic, James George Sanderson

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Numerous routines are available to find the eigenvalues of a real symmetric tridiagonal matrix. Since it is known to converge in exact arithmetic, the tridiagonal QL algorithm with origin shift is widely used. Here we analyze the algorithm in floating-point arithmetic. This analysis suggests two modifications to the EISPACK implementation TQLl that enable one to prove correctness and hence convergence of the routine.

Also, it is known that the implicit and explicit versions of the QL algorithm produce the same results in exact arithmetic. A counter-example to the floating-point analog of this theorem is presented.

Past Levels And Present State Of Northern Victoria Land Glaciers, Paul Andrew Mayewski Dec 1976

Past Levels And Present State Of Northern Victoria Land Glaciers, Paul Andrew Mayewski

Earth Science Faculty Scholarship

Before 1973, movement of the Ross Ice Shelf had been measured near the Transantarctic Mountains (Swithinbank, 1963), near Ross Island (Stuart and Heine, 1961) and near the ice front and to the south of Roosevelt Island (Dorrer et at., 1969). Robin (1975), assuming steady state, extrapolated these data across the ice shelf by applying volume conservation principles to measured ice thickness profiles of the ice shelf.

Weathering Stages Of A Tholeiitic Basalt (Dolerite), Queen Maud Mountains, Paul Andrew Mayewski Dec 1976

Weathering Stages Of A Tholeiitic Basalt (Dolerite), Queen Maud Mountains, Paul Andrew Mayewski

Earth Science Faculty Scholarship

The sparsity of datable material and key horizons throughout most of the Transantarctic Mountains requires that much of the mapping and correlation of glacial deposits, especially moraines, be based primarily on qualitative techniques. One qualitative method is to characterize the degree of weathering of clasts covering these deposits (Behling, 1971; Calkin, 1971; Nichols, 1971; and Mayewski, 1975). Lacking, however, is a detailed understanding of the role and method of weathering. To help solve this problem, soil studies have been made by Claridge and Campbell (1968) in the Shackleton Glacier region and Everett and Behling (1968), Linkletter (1972), Behling (1971), and …
