Synthesis Of Complexes Of Potassium Thiocyanate With Thiourea And Biurnet, Barclay Belding Fishburn Jun 1944

Synthesis Of Complexes Of Potassium Thiocyanate With Thiourea And Biurnet, Barclay Belding Fishburn

Honors Theses

The main objective of the work was an attempt to prepare certain compounds of the purine group for possible use in cardio-therapy, since the purine group is known to exert a stimulating action on the heart. However, under certain conditions these compounds cause a serious rise in blood pressure. It was thought that perhaps some compound which would produce dilation of the blood vessels could be combined with the purine group, to give a compound which would have the stimulative property, and in which the rise in blood pressure would be absent or at least minimized. Since such a type …

A Preliminary Polarographic Investigation Of Hydrogen Bonding - The Ortho- And Para- Hydroxy Benzaldehydes, Edwin Gerald Newstead Jun 1944

A Preliminary Polarographic Investigation Of Hydrogen Bonding - The Ortho- And Para- Hydroxy Benzaldehydes, Edwin Gerald Newstead

Honors Theses

The polagraphic method should be able to determine the presence of hydrogen bonds in ortho-hydroxy benzaldehyde in carefully buffered water solutions. The wave-height for the reduction of ortho-hydroxy benzaldehyde in acid solution is about one-half the height in basic solution. This would seem to indicate that the intermediate reduction product is formed by the reduction of ortho-hydroxy benzaldehyde in acid medium. This intermediate is stabilized by the presence of a hydrogen bond, so that further reduction to the hydroxy benzyl alcohol is not possible at the dropping mercury electrode.

Preparation Of Certain Purine Thiocyanate Complexes, Robert Wallace Carter Jun 1944

Preparation Of Certain Purine Thiocyanate Complexes, Robert Wallace Carter

Honors Theses

As the purine group of compounds is known to exert a stimulative effect on the heart, the object of this research was to prepare certain compounds of the purine group for possible use in cardiotherapy. However, a serious rise in blood pressure often accompanies the use of these compounds, it would be desirable to combine them with some compound which would dilate the blood vessels.

A Study Of Mixed Hydrogels Of Titania And Zirconia, James Borst Bouck Jun 1944

A Study Of Mixed Hydrogels Of Titania And Zirconia, James Borst Bouck

Honors Theses

Hydrogels of titania, formed by addition of bases to acid solutions of titanium salts, have been known since Rose's work in 1823. Hydrogels of zirconia have been prepared and investigated by several workers. These hydrogels of titania and zirconia are both acid gels, that is, they are formed at pH's considerably less than 7.

An Investigation Of The Reaction Of Bromopicrin With Liquid Ammonia, Seymour L. Meisel Jun 1944

An Investigation Of The Reaction Of Bromopicrin With Liquid Ammonia, Seymour L. Meisel

Honors Theses

The purpose of this research was to study the reaction between bromopicrin, also referred to as nitro-bromoform or tribromomonitromethane, with liquid ammonia. It seems surprising, but very little has been done on the reaction between these halogen nitro derivatives of methane and liquid ammonia.

The Relation Between Viscosity And Silica Concentration Of Silicic Acid Gels, Jules David Viglielmo Jun 1944

The Relation Between Viscosity And Silica Concentration Of Silicic Acid Gels, Jules David Viglielmo

Honors Theses

In this work we have again been concerned with the silica concentration but have elected to use viscosity measurements as a means of studying the process of gelation rather than the former method used by Hurd and Schaffer. As pointed out by Hurd and Santora, who use the viscometer in studying the effect of added electrolytes the process of gelation may in this way be observed.

Corona Discharge From Antenna Wire: A First Partial Report, Robert Katz May 1944

Corona Discharge From Antenna Wire: A First Partial Report, Robert Katz

Robert Katz Publications

Purpose: 1. To examine the conditions for corona at the surface of a wire. This report is a theoretical discussion. No test procedure was used.

Conclusions:
1. Calculation of the gradient at the surface of the fixed-wire liaison antenna (bare copperweld, .040" diameter) on the B-17 airplane indicates that it is of the order of 200 times the gradient measured at the top generating voltmeter.
2. Further work will be done by the Special Devices Branch in an attempt to determine the conditions under which insulated wire goes into corona.

A Study Of Some Dehydrating And Infiltrating Agents, Monica Hoefs May 1944

A Study Of Some Dehydrating And Infiltrating Agents, Monica Hoefs

Bachelors’ Theses

The ethyl-alcohol-xylol series produces a hardening and shrinking of the tissues. It has long been criticized for this reason.

Two Newly Discovered Conifers, George F. Beck Apr 1944

Two Newly Discovered Conifers, George F. Beck

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

Two genera of coniferous wood, apparently not listed among the Tertiary woods of the western states, have been recognized in the Percy Train collections from Rainbow Ridge, northwestern Nevada. These two, Tsuga (hemlock) and Chamaecyparis (cedar) bring up to 14 the genera of coniferous wood more or less certainly identified from the period and area in question.

Status Of Tertiary Woods Of The Western States Representing The Juglandaceae, George F. Beck Apr 1944

Status Of Tertiary Woods Of The Western States Representing The Juglandaceae, George F. Beck

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

For many years there has been uncertainty concerning the generic status of some fossil leaves belonging without question to the walnut family as a whole. A review of the woods of Juglandaceae as they have appeared in Tertiary horizons of the western states has suggested which genera are present, and in what proportions their leaves (or other remains) might be expected to appear.

Fluorite Near Silver Bow, Montana, Charles V. Campbell Feb 1944

Fluorite Near Silver Bow, Montana, Charles V. Campbell

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The wartime demand for fluorspar has caused renewed interest in fluorite deposits. Near Silver Bow, Montana, a deposit of massive, coarsely crystalline fluorspar, which has not been described in the literature, has attracted the attention of the United States Geological Survey.

The Incompatibility Of Certain Alcohol And Soap Frothers, John Thomas Doherty Feb 1944

The Incompatibility Of Certain Alcohol And Soap Frothers, John Thomas Doherty

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The purpose of this thesis is to elucidate this phenomena of frother incompatibility, and to offer an explanation based upon several divergent lines of investigation. The research was limited to four common frothing agents, namely, pine oil, n-amyl alcohol, sodium oleate, and sodium lauryl sulphate (Dreft).

Production Of Iron-Tin Compacts By Powder Metallurgy And A Synopsis Of Their Principle Properties, Matt C. Andrews Feb 1944

Production Of Iron-Tin Compacts By Powder Metallurgy And A Synopsis Of Their Principle Properties, Matt C. Andrews

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

This thesis is concerned primarily with the production of metal powder compacts of iron and tin. In producing these compacts, the effects of processing variables on some of the essential properties of the pellets made were investigated.

Hardness And Electrical Resistivity Of Copper-Iron Powder Metal Compacts, Fred A. Foyle Jr. Feb 1944

Hardness And Electrical Resistivity Of Copper-Iron Powder Metal Compacts, Fred A. Foyle Jr.

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Although powder metallurgical methods have been used for years to fabricate tungsten and platinum, very little scientific data have been recorded until the beginning of this century. A large percentage of all commercial production at present is based upon past practice rather than upon scientific knowledge.
