Population Status Of Beaver On The Free-Running Missouri River In Southeastern South Dakota, Robert J. Vanden Berge Jan 1976

Population Status Of Beaver On The Free-Running Missouri River In Southeastern South Dakota, Robert J. Vanden Berge

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One hundred sixty two beaver (Castor canadensis) harvested by trappers from the free-running Missouri River in southeastern South Dakota were examined from fall 1974 to spring 1976. Ninety two were males and 70 were females (131:100 sex ratio). Age specific sex ratios were not significantly different (P >0.05) from a 1:1 ratio for all age classes. The age structure of the sample was 69:26:45:15:4:3 for age classes zero through five, respectively. Minimum breeding age for female beaver was 2.5 years. Seventy-eight percent of all females (>2.5 years old) collected after the breeding season contained corpora lutea and viable fetuses. …

Multiplicatively Periodic Rings, Ted Chinburg, Melvin Henriksen Jan 1976

Multiplicatively Periodic Rings, Ted Chinburg, Melvin Henriksen

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

We prove a generalization of Luh's result without using Dirichlet's Theorem. We then use Theorem 1 to show that the J-subrings of a periodic ring form a lattice with respect to join and intersection (the join of two subrings is the smallest subring containing both of them). After noting that every J-ring has nonzero characteristic, we determine for which positive integers n and m there exist J-rings of period n and characteristic m. This generalizes a problem posed by G. Wene.

On The Juror Utilization Problem, Melvin Henriksen, George H. Orland

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

One of the authors, after hearing complaints night after night from his wife who was on jury duty, and finding it too much to bear, agreed to do something about the situation in return for peace. And so this study for the more efficient use of jurors was born. The aspects and magnitude of this problem have been discussed in many places. Basically we are concerned with achieving a better match between the number of jurors in a courthouse on a given day and those used in the judicial process.

Simplified Rbe-Dose Calculations For Mixed Radiation Fields, Robert Katz, B. G. Fullerton Jr., R. A. Roth, S. C. Sharma Jan 1976

Simplified Rbe-Dose Calculations For Mixed Radiation Fields, Robert Katz, B. G. Fullerton Jr., R. A. Roth, S. C. Sharma

Robert Katz Publications

A problem for radiobiology, radiation protection and treatment planning is the calculation of RBE as a function of the delivered dose when this dose is a result of a mixture of low and high LET radiations, as for neutron and pion beams. Track structure theory (Katz and Sharma, 1975) has recently been used to produce an algorithm for calculating survival, RBE, and OER as a function of dose in such environments. This simple formulation is based on the concept of irradiation equivalence (Katz et al., 1972) through which the effect of a mixed radiation environment is calculated as if it …

The Internal Chemical Shift - A Key To Bonding In Aromatic Molecules. 2. Substituent Effects On The Carbon-13 Magnetic Resonance Spectra Of The 1,4-Disubstituted Benzenes, Donald W. Beistel, W. Dan Edwards Jan 1976

The Internal Chemical Shift - A Key To Bonding In Aromatic Molecules. 2. Substituent Effects On The Carbon-13 Magnetic Resonance Spectra Of The 1,4-Disubstituted Benzenes, Donald W. Beistel, W. Dan Edwards

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Carbon-13 magnetic resonance shifts were determined for six families of 1,4-disubstituted benzenes. Linear least-squares correlations between the internal shifts of the families suggest an additivity relationship for 13C substituent effects at all four nonidentical ring carbons and at the α position when one of the substituents has a central carbon. The correlation of 1H and 13C shifts for these compounds is also linear, implying that the additivity relationships derived in a previous 1H study can be generalized to 13C.

Four-Color And Hβ Photometry Of The Galactic Cluster Ngc 6633, Edward G. Schmidt

Edward Schmidt Publications

Photometric measurements of stars in the intermediate-age galactic cluster NGC 6633 are presented. From these data the color excess is found to vary slightly across the cluster with an average of Eb – y = 0m.124. The distance modulus is found to be 7m.711 and the turnoff occurs at about (b – y)0 = 0m.l. The cluster is slightly metal poor.

Supply And Demand In Water Planning: Streamflow Estimation And Conservational Water Pricing, D. I. Carey, C. T. Haan Jan 1976

Supply And Demand In Water Planning: Streamflow Estimation And Conservational Water Pricing, D. I. Carey, C. T. Haan

KWRRI Research Reports

Recent studies indicated the need for development of surface water supplies in Kentucky. Rising resource costs make economically efficient reservoir designs increasingly important. This study was undertaken to provide methods in water supply reservoir design that increase system benefits.

Two major factors influencing reservoir design were studied: estimated future streamflow into the reservoir and demands placed on the reservoir. Standard reservoir sizing methods rely on historical streamflow data. This data is frequently limited and uncertainty in required storage estimates may result. To assess the reliability of a design, the use of mathematical models in simulation studies was proposed. Existing stochastic …

Sensitivity Of Vertebrate Embryos To Heavy Metals As A Criterion Of Water Quality: Phase Iii: Use Of Fish And Amphibian Eggs As Bioindicator Organisms For Evaluating Water Quality, Wesley J. Birge, Albert G. Westerman, Jeffrey A. Black Jan 1976

Black

KWRRI Research Reports

Fish and amphibian eggs, embryos and early posthatched (larval) stages were evaluated as bioindicator organisms with which to monitor the quality of natural water resources. Eggs of 9 species were cultured in water collected from each of 11 Inner Bluegrass rivers and streams. The latter were chosen to represent water sources varying in quality from extremely poor to good. Selection was based on the sources and magnitude of pollution, and the diversity and density of piscine populations. Cultures were maintained in vitro, using 12-hour changes of water.

Averaging data for all 9 animal species, egg hatchability (embryonic survival) ranged …

Orthogonal Designs V: Orders Divisible By Eight, Jennifer Seberry Jan 1976

Orthogonal Designs V: Orders Divisible By Eight, Jennifer Seberry

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

Constructions are given for orthogonal designs in orders divisible by eight. These are then used to show all two variable orthogonal designs exist in orders 24, 32 and 48. The existence of two variable designs in order 40 and three variable designs in order 24 is discussed.

The conjectures on the existence of all orthogonal designs (1, k) and skew-symmetric weighing matrices for weights k = 1, 2, ..., 2.t9-1 are resolved in the affirmative for orders 2.t9, t > 3 a positive integer.

Some New Constructions For Orthogonal Designs, Anthony V. Geramita, Jennifer Seberry

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

We give three new constructions for orthogonal designs using amicable orthogonal designs. These are then used to show (i) all possible n-tuples, n ~ 5 , are the types of orthogonal designs in order 16 and (ii) all possible n-tuples, n ~ 3 are the types of orthogonal designs in order 32 , (iii) all 4-tuples, (e, f, g, 32-e-f-g) , o ~ e T f T g ~ 32 are the types of orthogonal designs in order 32. These resultg are used in a paper by Peter J. Robinson, "Orthogonal designs of order sixteen", in this same volume, to …

Changes In Salinity Structure Of The James, York And Rappahannock Estuaries Resulting From The Effects Of Tropical Storm Agnes, Paul V. Hyer, Evon P. Ruzecki Jan 1976

Changes In Salinity Structure Of The James, York And Rappahannock Estuaries Resulting From The Effects Of Tropical Storm Agnes, Paul V. Hyer, Evon P. Ruzecki

VIMS Books and Book Chapters

The peak effect of the flood waters produced by Tropical Storm Agnes was seen on June 25 in the James, June 26 in the Rappahannock, and June 30 in the York. Recovery toward normal salinity conditions after the high runoffs proceeded discontinuously, with alternating periods of vertical stratification and destratification. During strongly stratified stages, saline water advanced upstream along the bottom. In the York and James Rivers, the most dramatic stratification occurred about July 20- 25. This event resulted in bottom salinity values exceeding normal ambient values and, at the river mouths, reaching values hitherto unobserved. This event was apparently …

Vapor Phase Oxidation Of Chloropropenes Over Heterogeneous Catalyst Systems, Tim Ellis Owen Jan 1976

Vapor Phase Oxidation Of Chloropropenes Over Heterogeneous Catalyst Systems, Tim Ellis Owen

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Propylene Dichloride (PDC) is a byproduct of several Dow processes. The thermal cracking of PDC produces 1-cis-chloropropene, 1-trans-chloropropene, 2-chloropropene, and allyl chloride . By oxidizing the l- and 2-chloropropenes to 3- and 2- chloroacrylic acids, respectively, a potentially valuable product could be made. The chloropropenes, air, and steam were passed over various heterogeneous oxidation catalyst systems to attempt this oxidation. Contact time was varied between 0.0951 to 0.915 sec. Temperature was varied between 275C to .25C. The air content of the feed was varied between .1 to 75%. The chloropropene content of the feed was varied between 2.9% to 5.0% …

The Magnification Factor For Sodium Chloride Liesegang Circles Established With An Aerosol Centrifuge, O. Preining, Josef Podzimek, P. Yue

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Sodium chloride particles deposited on a gelatin film containing silver nitrate form in a humid environment clearly visible dark brown reaction spots (Liesegang circles) after development in u.v.-light. The size of these reaction spots depends on the mass of NaCl in the particles. To establish the spot size vs particle size relation, particles produced by nebulising NaCl-solutions and sea water were sampled in an aerosol centrifuge. The location of deposition yields the aerodynamic diameter of the particle, and the spot size is measured microscopically. In this way the spot size vs aerodynamic diameter relation is established experimentally in the so …

The Effects Of The Agnes Flood On The Salinity Structure Of The Lower Chesapeake Bay And Contiguous Waters, A. Y. Kuo, E. P. Ruzecki, C. S. Fang Jan 1976

The Effects Of The Agnes Flood On The Salinity Structure Of The Lower Chesapeake Bay And Contiguous Waters, A. Y. Kuo, E. P. Ruzecki, C. S. Fang

VIMS Books and Book Chapters

The transient response of salinity distribution in lower Chesapeake Bay to flood waters from Tropical Storm Agnes is studied in terms of a two-layered, partially mixed estuary. Prior to 30 June 1972, surface salinities were well depressed throughout the Bay while those at the bottom near the Bay mouth were not depressed by 5 July. This resulted in a highly stratified situation normally found in the spring of the year. Stratification decreased when bottom waters were flushed down-bay by the flood (on 5 to 10 July for the region south of New Point Comfort). The "rebound" of salinity structure started …

The Effects Of Tropical Storm Agnes On The Copper And Zinc Budgets Of The Rappahannock River, Robert J. Huggett, Michael E. Bender Jan 1976

The Effects Of Tropical Storm Agnes On The Copper And Zinc Budgets Of The Rappahannock River, Robert J. Huggett, Michael E. Bender

VIMS Books and Book Chapters

The metals copper and zinc were analyzed in bottom sediments (top 1 cm) from the Rappahannock River before and after Tropical Storm Agnes. By extracting the sediments with various techniques (HN03, HCl) the nature of the metal speciation can be estimated. Data show that the inorganic copper was increased by a factor of 2 to 3 in the normally saline portion of the river as a result of Agnes but returned to before-Agnes levels within one year. Metal analyses of suspended sediments collected during the Agnes flooding allows an estimate of sedimentation indicating at least 7.5 mm of new sediments …

Flood Wave-Tide Wave Interaction On The James River During The Agnes Flood, John P. Jacobson, C. S. Fang Jan 1976

Flood Wave-Tide Wave Interaction On The James River During The Agnes Flood, John P. Jacobson, C. S. Fang

VIMS Books and Book Chapters

During the Agnes flood hourly tidal height data were collected at seven locations along the tidal James River and currents were measured at two transects in the lower James. A comparison between actual tides and currents and the predicted tidal features as given by the tide and tidal current tables of NOAA was made. Results of this comparison show that Agnes did significantly affect water levels in the upper portion of the tidal James, especially near Richmond. However in the lower portion of the James no discernible rise was evident due to the passage of the flood crest. A small …

Effects Of Tropical Storm Agnes On Nutrient Flux And Distribution In Lower Chesapeake Bay, C. L. Smith, W. G. Macintyre, C. A. Lake, J. G. Windsor Jr. Jan 1976

Effects Of Tropical Storm Agnes On Nutrient Flux And Distribution In Lower Chesapeake Bay, C. L. Smith, W. G. Macintyre, C. A. Lake, J. G. Windsor Jr.

VIMS Books and Book Chapters

Nutrient concentrations measured in lower Chesapeake Bay in the summer of 1972 immediately following the flooding associated with Tropical Storm Agnes are compared with those in the summer of 1973, a season of more normal rainfall. The large amount of land runoff produced unseasonably high concentrations of dissolved inorganic nitrogen in the Bay near the mouth of the Potomac River. Phosphate concentrations were essentially unaffected by the flooding. Fluxes of total nitrogen and total phosphorus nutrients through the mouth of Chesapeake Bay were calculated for both summers. The calculated net export of nutrients from the Bay in both August 1972, …

Observations On Dissolved Oxygen Conditions In Three Virginia Estuaries After Tropical Storm Agnes (Summer 1972), R.A. Jordan

VIMS Books and Book Chapters

Dissolved oxygen (DO) and salinity levels in the James, York, and Rappahannock estuaries were monitored for approximately two months (June 24-August 31, 1972) following Tropical Storm Agnes. DO depressions developed more rapidly and were more severe in the deep waters of the York and Rappahannock than in the James. Depressions that developed immediately after the storm were followed by recoveries and subsequent, more severe depressions. In late July, bottom water DO concentrations below 1 mg/1 were found at stations covering 15 miles of the York and 25 miles of the Rappahannock. Comparison of river data with Chesapeake Bay data suggests …

A hydrographic station (Station Y) at the mouth of the York River (37°14.6'N, 76°23.4'W) was under biological surveillance for one year prior to the arrival of Tropical Storm Agnes. For one full year following this storm, these measurements were continued. In addition, the chlorophyll a and heterotrophic potential measurements were incorporated into an ongoing zooplankton sampling program of the lower Chesapeake Bay below 37°40'N latitude.

All Virginia waters within Chesapeake Bay were closed for the taking of shellfish for direct consumption on 23 June 1972. This initial closing was in anticipation of high microorganism levels accompanying flood waters moving downstream. Various areas beginning with the lower portion of Chesapeake Bay were reopened beginning )n 20 July 1972. By 5 October 1972 all areas closed as a result )f Tropical Storm Agnes were reopened. No increased incidents of infectious diseases caused by waterborne microorganisms were noted in Virginia which could be attributed to Tropical Storm Agnes.

Methods For Measuring Ecosystem Stress, R. J. Huggett, M. E. Bender Jan 1976

Methods For Measuring Ecosystem Stress, R. J. Huggett, M. E. Bender

VIMS Books and Book Chapters

If one looks back over the past twenty-five years, at the pollution crises which have made the headlines and influenced our decision making policies on both local and national levels, one may note a very interesting aspect. That is, the crises are often associated with the development of new and more sensitive types of analytical instrumentation. Several examples of this readily come to mind: for example, it wasn't until the development of electron capture detection for gas chromatography that DDT really became a crisis. The reason is quite simple: the concentrations which were being accumulated by the organisms were below …

Semiquantitative Infrared Analysis Of Diketones And Anhydrides In A Reaction Mixture, Dominic T.C. Yang, F. H. Watson Jr., J. O. Lay, R. Getty

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The ozonolysis of a hydroxymethylene ketone yields a mixture of diketone and anhydride. Treatment of hydroxymethylene camphor with ozone affords, in addition to the expected camphor quinone, a surprisingly large amount of camphoric anhydride (56%) via Baeyer-Villager reaction. Use of infrared absorption to analyze the relative amounts of camphor quinone and camphoric anhydride in a reaction mixture was studied by comparing peak heights of their carbonyl stretching bands.
