Protein Content Of Grasses At Different Stages Of Growth, G.F. Gastler, A.L. Moxon
Protein Content Of Grasses At Different Stages Of Growth, G.F. Gastler, A.L. Moxon
Agricultural Experiment Station Chemistry Pamphlets (1943-1944)
The two attached tables indicate the changes in protein content of Western Wheat grass and Blue Green grass at different stages of growth. The values are based on an air dry basis which would be comparable with the moisture content of dry hay. The values, therefore, indicate the approximate protein content of hay made from these grasses if cut at the stages indicated in the tables.
Laboratory Tests On Gravelly Material For Use In The Pervious Zones Of Newton Dam, Newton Project, Utah, W.G. Holtz
Laboratory Tests On Gravelly Material For Use In The Pervious Zones Of Newton Dam, Newton Project, Utah, W.G. Holtz
Elusive Documents
A compaction test was performed on the soil (-1/2") material, and mechanical analysis, specific gravity, and percolation-consolidation test was made in a large (19&1/2" diameter) percolator, cylinder and the material was well compacted into the cylinder. A consolidating load equivalent to a 20-foot fill was applied. Because it was believed that some of the fine sand might be transported through the gravel and rock by the percolating water, a 14-mesh screen and a 2-inch later of clear fine gravel (3/16" - 3/8") was placed over the gravelly material being tested. After the percolation-consolidation test was completed, the screen and fine …

A Study Of The Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis, John E. Dornfeld
A Study Of The Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis, John E. Dornfeld
Bachelors’ Theses
In Continental Europe, where raw materials are at a premium, it is necessary to synthesize as much as possible. Hydrocarbons and their oxygenated derivatives are important for "everyday" life. When importation costs of raw materials are high, synthesis is necessary provided it can be done cheaper. The Fischer-Tropsch process is the answer for the needs of synthetic hydrocarbons and their oxygenated derivatives.
The purpose of this thesis is to obtain hydrocarbons and their oxygenated derivatives by the Fischer-Tropsch process in the wax range. From the literature it appears that no work in the industrial field is being done in the …
X-Ray Inspection Of Castings (Army Air Forces' Requirements), Robert Katz
X-Ray Inspection Of Castings (Army Air Forces' Requirements), Robert Katz
Robert Katz Publications
The author contributed a brief account of the radiographic practices necessary to comply with government specifications to a round table discussion on inspection methods at the last American Society for Metals Convention, and later was able to release for publication in Metal Progress a full set of the radiographic standards set up about a year ago to govern acceptance of structural castings for airplanes. Representaive negatives are reproduced in this article. Those eliminated are either of similar defects which did not register strong enough to appear on an engraving without retouching, or of defects readily observed by visual inspection without …
Construction And Use Of A Bingham Type Viscometer, Harold P. Bodenstab
Construction And Use Of A Bingham Type Viscometer, Harold P. Bodenstab
Honors Theses
Bingham in his book "Fluidity and Plasticity" has described a type of viscometer similar to the Ostwald visocometer but which has the added feature of a variable applied pressure. By changing the pressure the time of flow may be controlled so that a rather viscous liquid will not have an inconveniently long time of flow in a viscometer which in suitable for another liquid. The construction of such an apparatus consists in teh assembly of a special viscometer with an arrangement for applying air pressure, measurement of such air pressure, and the placement of the viscometer in a thermostat. Such …
A Study Of Some Cyclohexyl Tin Compounds, Donald J. Giroux
A Study Of Some Cyclohexyl Tin Compounds, Donald J. Giroux
Honors Theses
Although a large number of organotin compounds have been prepared (Dr. Garzuly lists over one hundred and fifty), comparatively little is known about them. It was the purpose of this investigation to study some of the cyclohexyl tin compounds with a view toward finding out more about their preparation and properties, and to prepare some that had not been prepared before. Unfortunately time and circumstances prevented the latter.
A Study Of The Co-Gelation Of Silica And Titania, Theodore Male
A Study Of The Co-Gelation Of Silica And Titania, Theodore Male
Honors Theses
Silica gels have been the object of extensive research. Titania gels have been the object of limited research, but they have been reported as made successfully. The most commonly used silicate solutions are basic and the titanium solutions are acidic. Acids are used to control the gelation of silicon, and bases are used to control the gelation of titania. The imagination is taxed only slightly in assuming as plausible the use of the acid titanate solution to control the gelation of silica and the basic silicate solution to control the gelation of titania, and thereby produce a mixed gel. If …
Scattering And Polarization Of Light By Silicic Acid Gel-Forming Mixtures, Donald Male
Scattering And Polarization Of Light By Silicic Acid Gel-Forming Mixtures, Donald Male
Honors Theses
Much work has been done on the factors affecting the time of setting of silicic acid gels. The effects of hydrogen ion concentration, heat, and the presence of ammonium chloride and other soluble impurities are quite well known. Work has also been done on the gels, during and after setting, on such properties as electrolytic conductivity, surface tension, syneresis elasticity, viscosity and the ability to scatter light. It is with this last property that this research is chiefly concerned. The oldest known law concerning optical properties of a collodial solution is Lamberts' law of absorption.
A Comparison Of The Time Of Set Of Similarly Constituted Gels At Various Temperatures, John E. Macdonald
A Comparison Of The Time Of Set Of Similarly Constituted Gels At Various Temperatures, John E. Macdonald
Honors Theses
This investigation was undertaken with the purpose of obtaining more data on the question of the existence of thermally reversible silicic acid gels, i.e., silicic acid gels which would reliquify on heating. Some work was done in the highly basic region at 21 degrees and 40 degrees. An attempt was made to use the Leads and Northrup glass electrode apparatus present in the Union College Chemical Laboratory which, however, failed, although Spittle using this apparatus, apparently met with some success. In order to obtain data on the change of time of set with temperature of gels having the same composition …
A Preliminary Investigation Of Certain Purine Thiocyanate Complexes, Gerhard W. Leubner
A Preliminary Investigation Of Certain Purine Thiocyanate Complexes, Gerhard W. Leubner
Honors Theses
The purpose of the work has been to attempt to prepare some compounds of the purine group with regard to their possible use in cardiotherapy. Some of the purine derivatives such as caffeine, theobromide, and theophylline under certain conditions exert a stimulating effect on the heart, but under these conditions exert a stimulating effect on the heart, but under these conditions they usually also produce an undesirable rise in the blood pressure.
Heats Of Solution Of Silver Halides In Liquid Ammonia, Donald K. Stevens
Heats Of Solution Of Silver Halides In Liquid Ammonia, Donald K. Stevens
Honors Theses
It was the hope of the experimenters to make use of one of the advantages of liquid ammonia, that of the solubility of metallic sodium to give a free electron, to find the heat of reduction of the silver ion to the metallic state.
A Study Of The Camphor Method For Molecular Weight Determinations, Harvey Douglas Boynton
A Study Of The Camphor Method For Molecular Weight Determinations, Harvey Douglas Boynton
Honors Theses
The determination of molecular weights accurately and quickly is of prime imporatance in analytical and organic chemistry. This problem has been attacked from many angles, the greatest success being found in cryoscopy. Man of the customary organic solvents have been used for cryoscopic determinations; they all have their advantages and limitations. These solvents in general give a very low freezing point depression. Camphor is dinstinguished from these in that it gives an unusally large freezing point depression, 40 degrees for a molal solution, and it is suited by a considerale dissolving power up to moderate concentrations.
The Reactions Of L-Chloro-L-Nitro Propane In Anhydrous Liquid Ammonia, James S. Gilmore
The Reactions Of L-Chloro-L-Nitro Propane In Anhydrous Liquid Ammonia, James S. Gilmore
Honors Theses
In 1939 Seigle and Hass were successful in preparing numerous dinitro paraffins such as 2, 3-dimethyl-2, 3-dinitro butane and 2, 3-dimethyl-2, 3-dinitro pentane by the reaction of salts of nitroparaffins with halonitroparaffins. They were unable to do so however, in the cases where primary nitro compounds were involved. More recently, in an unpublished work Sottysiak believed that he prepared the 2, 3-dimethyl-2, 3-dinitro butane by a Wurtz reaction in liquid ammonia, in which 2-nitro-2-chloro propane was reduced by sodium. Because of the strong reducing properties of a solution of sodium in anhydrous liquid ammonia, it was hoped that the 3, …
A Study Of The Possible Formation Of A Mixed Hydrogel Of Zirconia And Silica, Irving Goodman
A Study Of The Possible Formation Of A Mixed Hydrogel Of Zirconia And Silica, Irving Goodman
Honors Theses
Of course in this paper we are also interested in the gel of hydrated silica, which has been studied here thoroughly for several years. A discussion of the theory and work on this subject would take up too much time and space, since this field has been much more widely studied than any other in the field of gels. Reference to Hurd’s “Theories for the Mechanism of the Setting of Silicic Acid Gels” presents a complete summary of the theory behind the setting of this gel.

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
The ore investigated in this thesis is a zinc-copper-lead ore. Microscopic analysis of this complex sulphide ore showed it to contain pyrite, sphalerite, arsenopyrite, galena, chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite, and covellite, with quartz as the gangue constituent.
The Electrodeposition Of Chromium From Trivalent Salt Solutions, Bahri Ersoz
The Electrodeposition Of Chromium From Trivalent Salt Solutions, Bahri Ersoz
Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
The enormous number of previous experiments and researches for the improvement of the commercial chromic acid bath, did not succeed even in the partial elimination of any one of the disadvantages of chromic acid bath. This led the author to believe that the poor performance is an inherent quality of the chromic acid bath, and is due to the fact that the deposition occurs from the higher state of oxidation.
Bright Electroplating Of Copper In The Acid Bath, Elwood K. Jensen
Bright Electroplating Of Copper In The Acid Bath, Elwood K. Jensen
Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
Plating of various objects with mirror-like surfaces of chromium, nickel, and other metals has expanded considerably during the past decade, and now ranks as an important enterprise, particularly with respect to the automotive industry.
The Effect Of Boron On The Hardenability Of Steel, William J. Foy
The Effect Of Boron On The Hardenability Of Steel, William J. Foy
Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
Many attempts have been made to improve iron and steel and their alloys by the addition of boron. The results obtained were not encouraging for the reason that the amount of boron used, generally from 0.2 to 2.0 per cent is altogether too high. This percentage of boron renders the product hard and brittle and of late the experiments with boron in this connection have been practically abandoned.
An Attempt To Increase The Permeability And Porosity Of The Cut Bank Oil Sand By Treatment With Various Reagents, Donald H. Johnson
An Attempt To Increase The Permeability And Porosity Of The Cut Bank Oil Sand By Treatment With Various Reagents, Donald H. Johnson
Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970
The purpose of this investigation was to attempt to find some means of increasing the effective porosity and permeability of the producing sands of the Cut Bank Oil Field, with the hope that thereby the ultimate recovery of petroleum from this field may be increased. Although the percentage increase in production thus effected would undoubtedly be small, it would represent a substantial volume of petroleum in view of the great quantity of oil and gas present in this field.
