Linearity In Factor Analysis, Opal Emmons May 1939

Linearity In Factor Analysis, Opal Emmons

Master's Theses

The uniqueness of mathematics in that it is a science complete in itself makes it possible to apply mathematical tools to sciences which, in themselves vary widely in content. There is, however, a particular difficulty which must be surmounted. A given mathematical procedure may be valid in the science of mathematics but invalid in another science, such as psychology. The reason for this is that sometimes there is a discrepancy between the implicit assumptions in the field of mathematics and those implicit in the field of application. The purpose of this investigation is twofold: (1) To point out that linearity …

Heats Of Solution In Liquid Ammonia, Joseph Sottysiak May 1939

Heats Of Solution In Liquid Ammonia, Joseph Sottysiak

Honors Theses

Water, chemically speaking, is the most important individual substance known. Water occupies an outstanding position among solvents. In its capacity as a solvent for salts and as an ionizing agent, it is in a class by itself. Of all known liquids, ammonia most closely resembles water in those properties which make water outstanding among solvents. As a solvent, ammonia is secondary to water, however; many salts insoluble in water dissolve readily in liquid ammonia. Solutions of salts in liquid ammonia are excellent conductors of electricity. Ammonia unites with salts to form ammonia of crystallization. It solvates ions. It is an …

Effect Of Soil Type, Slope, And Surface Conditions On Intake Of Water, F. L. Duley, L. L. Kelly

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

In connection with investigations of runoff and erosion in the Great Plains an attempt has been made by means of artificial applications of water to determine certain principles concerning the effect of different soils and soil conditions on runoff and soil erosion. Such information is needed in planning all field operations dealing with soil erosion and moisture control. It is also needed in connection with watershed studies that are being established in the Central Great Plains, dealing with runoff and flood flows from larger areas. The method employed makes it possible to obtain comparable data on a wide range of …

Asymptotic Series, Bernard Martin Apr 1939

Asymptotic Series, Bernard Martin

Master's Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to follow the development of the asymptotic series from the beginning made by Euler, in his solution of problems, to the modern applications of asymptotic series, also to present a definition and an analysis of asymptotic series, explain some different theories of their use, and show the ways in which they find common usage. The use of asymptotic series is a comparative new development in the field of applied mathematics. The divergent series were not used as a method of calculation until Euler showed that they gave close approximations in the solution of problems. …

The Comparative Ability Of The Bob-White And The Ring-Necked Pheasant To Withstand Cold And Hunger, Paul L. Errington

Other Publications in Wildlife Management

The native Bob-white (Colinus virginianus) and the introduced Ring-necked Pheasant (Phasianus colchicus torquatus) may both, on occasion, suffer severe winter mortality over much of their common range in north-central United States. Their habitats often overlap, although the Pheasant has a greater cruising radius and an ability to live in a more open type of country than the Bob-white. In given localities they also live upon much the same kinds of winter foods.

The scope of this paper is not intended to cover the ecological adjustments of Pheasants or of Bob-whites to their winter environment so much …

The Adsorption Of Hydrogen Ion Upon Arsenic Trisulfide Hydrosols Preceding Coagulation, Myron L. Corrin Feb 1939

The Adsorption Of Hydrogen Ion Upon Arsenic Trisulfide Hydrosols Preceding Coagulation, Myron L. Corrin

Bachelors’ Theses

Since the recognition of the colloidal state by Graham in 1861, the importance of colloidal systems in both pure and applied science has received increasing recognition. Many industrial processes are colloidal in nature; the chemistry of living matter is essentially colloidal chemistry; analytical chemistry involves the recognition and removal of matter in the colloidal state. As a result of the many applications of this branch of chemistry, the mechanisms underlying typical processes of colloidal systems are of vital significance. Specifically, the destruction of colloidal systems by electrolytes, finding as it does such wide use, is of considerable importance. In the …
