Radiative Lifetime Of The B ²Σˉ State Of Ch, Richard A. Anderson, Jerry Peacher, David M. Wilcox
Radiative Lifetime Of The B ²Σˉ State Of Ch, Richard A. Anderson, Jerry Peacher, David M. Wilcox
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
The radiative lifetimes of the N'=3 to 15 rotational states of the v'=0 level of the B 2Σ- state of CH were measured. Emission lines were observed to N'=15, but no lines above this rotational state were observed. This result agrees with previous studies. The lifetimes of all rotational states were between 300 and 400 ns. Previous measurements have indicated that the N'=15 level might have a lifetime as short as 100 ns.

Calorimetric Determination Of The Interaction Of Cu, Fe, And V Oxides With So₂ And Measurement Of Sulfur (Iv) And Sulfur (Vi) In Particulate Samples From Utah Valley, Douglas F. Cannon
Theses and Dissertations
The adsorption of SO2 by metal oxides suspended in decane were studied by calorimetric titration. The adsorption per surface area decreases in order CuO > Cu2O > Fe2O3 > V2O5. An Andersen High Volume sampler was used to obtain particulate samples from five sites in Utah County. Particulate sulfur (IV) and sulfur (VI) was analyzed by thermometric titration with K2Cr2O7 and by a direct injection enthalpimetric determination using BaCl2. Results show that little oxidation of the S(IV) occurs after it is released from the Kennecott smelter stack.
Studies Of N⁵, N¹⁰-Methylene Tetrahydrofolate Reductase From Porcine Kidney And Mouse L1210-Induced Tumor Tissues, Purification And Interaction With Antifolates, David W. Jayme
Theses and Dissertations
Methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase has been purified 1000-fold from porcine kidney and 400-fold from mouse L1210-induced tumor tissue by classical methods. The enzyme preparations have been demonstrated to be essentially free of contaminating methionine synthetase and serine transhydroxymethylase activity. Studies of the kinetic properties of the kidney and tumor enzymes, with respect to the reverse reaction using N5-methyl tetrahydrofolate as the variable substrate, have indicated Km values of 2.0 and 2.4 x 10-4 M, respectively. Inhibition of this key branch point enzyme in folate metabolism by a number of antimetabolites indicates that several of these antifolate compounds exhibit enzyme inhibition superior …
Ultraviolet Radiation Effects On Rotifers, Syed Asim Hussain
Ultraviolet Radiation Effects On Rotifers, Syed Asim Hussain
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The purpose of this investigation was to study ultraviolet radiation effects on rotifers. The rotifer studied was Philodina acuticornis odiosa Milne. Isolation cultures were used to grow the rotifers individually in separate U-plate depressions. The source of ultraviolet radiation consisted of four mercury germicidal lamps used in combination to deliver a uniform flux of 315 uW/cm2 over the sample. Five groups of rotifers, one control and four experimental groups of 96 each, were used. The rotifers used were 2-10 hours of age at the beginning of the experiment. The experimental groups were exposed to uv radiation for 3 minutes, …
Ultraviolet Excitation Thermoluminescence Of Lead-Manganese Calcium Carbonate, Dennis Schrope
Ultraviolet Excitation Thermoluminescence Of Lead-Manganese Calcium Carbonate, Dennis Schrope
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Calcium carbonate with impurities of lead and manganese have produced measurable thermoluminescence (TL) when excited by ultraviolet (uv) radiation. In this investigation the lead impurities comprise the majority of trapping centers stimulated by uv irradiation. In addition, centers associated with the CO3groups have been found to be capable of absorbing uv and ultimately producing TL. The 2537 Å mercury line is primarily responsible for stimulating these centers, and the response was found to be linear to 0.6734 joules/cm2.
The thernoluminescence response was discovered to be dependent on the concentrations of lead and manganese. However, for a …

Anion Assisted Redox Rates Between Cobalt (Ii) - Cobalt (Iii) Polypyridyl Complexes In Acetophenone, Seyed Garmestani
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The effects of ionic strength and various anions on the rate of electron transfer between tris(2,2'-dipyridine) cobalt(III) and bis(2,2',2"-tripyridine) cobalt(II) complexes have been examined in acetophenone. The redox rate was found to increase with increasing ionic strength in both the presence and absence of added salts. The reaction was first order with respect to each reactant and second order overall in all cases. The influence of the C104, BF4, and B(C6H5)4 anions on the reaction rate was studied with their order of effectiveness being: C104- > BF4 >> B(C6 …

Geomorphology And Land Use Of A Tropical Wet-Dry Environment Santander, Columbia, Joseph Ray
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
This study deals with the Holocene environmental dynamics experienced by a seasonally wet-dry landscape of tropical Columbia. In light of a high ecological sensitivity, the study area is also analyzed as the resource of man. This is done by intensive study area reconnaissance, mapping, altimeter survey, and radiocarbon dating of fluvial landforms. Also, samples of soil, pasture, and water were collected for later study, and several interviews were completed with local residents.
The study area is a tropical lowland of northcentral Columbia at about 7 ½° north latitude. A maximum local relief about 600 m is maintained by a rather …

Beach Erosion, May-June, 1974, Central And South Coast, Nsw, Edward A. Bryant, R. Kidd
Faculty of Science - Papers (Archive)
Between May 24th and June 18th 1974, three periods of erosive wave conditions dramatically changed the character of many beaches along the central and southern New South Wales Coast. This paper documents and evaluates regional variations in the responses of beaches to these erosional events for selected portions of this coast (Figure 1).
The Mathematician, The Historian, And The History Of Mathematics, Judith V. Grabiner
The Mathematician, The Historian, And The History Of Mathematics, Judith V. Grabiner
Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research
The historian's basic questions, whether he is a historian of mathematics or of political institutions, are: what was the past like? and how did the present come to be? The second question --how did the present come to be?-- is the central one in the history of mathematics, whether done by historian or mathematician. But the historian's view of both past and present is quite different from that of the mathematician. The historian is interested in the past in its full richness, and sees any present fact as conditioned by a complex chain of causes in an almost unlimited past. …
Effect Of Uniaxial Stress On The Unstable A1 (To) Phonon In Ferroelectric Gadolinium Molybdate, B.N. Ganguly, Frank G. Ullman, Roger D. Kirby, J.R. Hardy
Effect Of Uniaxial Stress On The Unstable A1 (To) Phonon In Ferroelectric Gadolinium Molybdate, B.N. Ganguly, Frank G. Ullman, Roger D. Kirby, J.R. Hardy
Roger Kirby Publications
The effect of uniaxial stress along [100] on the unstable A1 (TO) phonon, 47 cm-1 at room temperature, in ferroelectric (<159°C) gadolinium molybdate has been studied by Raman scattering at 138, 141, 146, and 155°C. An increase in peak frequency and narrowing of the line shape is observed with increasing stress. The data are analyzed by fitting to a Lorentzian line shape. The force-constant parameter is insensitive to both stress and temperature, whereas the damping constant decreases nonlinearly with stress, approaching an asymptotic value at high stress.
Chemical Components And Diffusion, John B. Brady
Chemical Components And Diffusion, John B. Brady
Geosciences: Faculty Publications
Chemical components for use in the description of a system involved in a diffusion process may be selected according to the same criteria followed in the selection of components for an equilibrium system. The various possible sets of components are not independent and may be interrelated through a component transformation. Actual components are preferred over nonvariable components, since they simplify descriptions and avoid theoretically nonmeasureable quantities. Two systems involved in an interdiffusion process may always be described using components that are actual components of both systems. For example, ternary reciprocal exchange of alkalis be tween alkali feldspars and dioctahedral alkali …

Relaxation Of The Wall-Pinned Magnetization Ringing Mode In Superfluid 3he-B, Richard A. Webb, R. E. Sager, J. C. Wheatley
Faculty Publications
Observations of the wall-pinned mode in 3He-B allow new magnetic relaxation phenomena to be studied. Excepting the quantitative value of the zero-time ringing frequency, comparison of experiment with theory is satisfactory, including a linear dependence of the square of the ringing period on time and a square-root singularity near Tc in the relaxation parameter.

The Flood Disaster Protection Act Of 1973: A Rational Approach To Flood Damage Prevention, Larry J. Wilson
The Flood Disaster Protection Act Of 1973: A Rational Approach To Flood Damage Prevention, Larry J. Wilson
IUSTITIA
Throughout history, man has utilized rivers for water supply, transportation, power generation, and waste disposal. This strong relationship has encouraged the location of human settlements near rivers and streams despite the risk of periodic flooding. The modern technology of transportation and public services has reduced the necessity for riverside locations, but the development of flood plains in urban areas has continued, resulting in the periodic loss of human life and property when flooding has occurred. Within the United States, flooding has taken over 5000 lives in the last fifty years and causes an estimated $1.25 billion in property damages annually.' …
Path-Integral Formulation Of Scattering Theory, Paul Finkler, C. Edward Jones, M. Misheloff
Path-Integral Formulation Of Scattering Theory, Paul Finkler, C. Edward Jones, M. Misheloff
Paul Finkler Papers
A new formulation of nonrelativistic scattering theory is developed which expresses the S matrix as a path integral. This formulation appears to have at least two advantages: (1) A closed formula is obtained for the S matrix in terms of the potential, not involving a series expansion; (2) the energy-conserving δ function can be explicitly extracted using a technique analogous to that of Faddeev and Popov, thereby yielding a closed pathintegral expression for the T matrix. The introduction of the concept of the classical interaction picture provides considerable physical insight into this formulation. This formulation also suggests a successionof improvements …

Nonlinear Parallel Ringing Of Magnetization In Superfluid 3he, Richard A. Webb, R. E. Sager, J. C. Wheatley
Faculty Publications
Experiments based on an analogy to the ac Josephson effect have shown in both 3He-A and 3He-B that a pairing theory of the superfluidity of 3He is essentially correct. Additional observations of parallel ringing are not in agreement with the simple "pendulum models" used to describe nonlinear dynamic magnetic effects.
