The Reactions Of Acid Halides With Sodium, Magnesium, Zinc And Amalgams, William H. Webb Jan 1939

The Reactions Of Acid Halides With Sodium, Magnesium, Zinc And Amalgams, William H. Webb

Masters Theses

"The reactions of acid halides with metals are of interest because there seems to be a possibility of abstracting the halogens from two molecules of the halide, and thereby bringing about a coupling reaction; or the formation of an intermediate organo-metallic compound which would react with another molecule of the acid halide. The result of these reactions should be the formation of diacetyl and acetyl chloride and of dibenzoyl or benzil from benzoyl chloride. This procedure would be far better than the usual procedures for the preparation of these compounds...The results reported in the literature by different workers, on the …

Some Applications Of The Principles Of Isomorphism And Variation To The Teaching Of Geometry, Ralph Mock Nov 1938

Some Applications Of The Principles Of Isomorphism And Variation To The Teaching Of Geometry, Ralph Mock

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

In summary, it should be stressed that the numerous examples of this paper are important only in so much as they illustrate the use of the devices and concepts emphasized in the study. It is our premise that plane geometry, as usually taught, does not possess the value which it might have. Certain changes in content as well as in presentation would materially improve the course. This study, then, presents suggestions for improving the ordinary course in two directions. First, by presenting logical propositions from the students' experiences which are partially isomorphic to the theorems of plane geometry, it is …

The Nebraska State Geological Survey And The "Valentine Problem", Alvin Leonard Lugn Sep 1938

The Nebraska State Geological Survey And The "Valentine Problem", Alvin Leonard Lugn

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The Nebraska State Geological Survey is primarily concerned with the stratigraphic classification of the Tertiary lithologic units in this state. When the stratigraphic relationships are fully understood, the faunas can be properly and correctly related and named, whether the stratigraphic names or others are used. It should be understood that this survey, in determmmg its acceptance of stratigraphic names on the basis of priority, is making every effort to differentiate names which have been applied in a strictly stratigraphic sense from names which. while they may be older, were applied in only a geographic or faunal sense and have only …

Additions To The Late Tertiary Floras Of The Pacific Northwest, George F. Beck

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

The purpose of this paper and those which will follow, is to present new types of flora found in several older leaf localities of the Pacific Northwest. A study will also be made of a number of new localities as yet not reported upon in the literature. The present paper refers to several new species found at the Bull Quarry, Ellensburg, and the Brickyard locality, Spokane, Washington. Both sites have been studied and reported upon in the past, as noted in attached bibliography.

Washington Petrified Forests-Ginkgo Exotic Forest, George F. Beck

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

Seven years ago we began our study of the Ginkgo Petrified Forest in Central Washington. This is in reality a series of forests occurring at various horizons in the Yakima ( and Wenas?) basalts throughout a vertical range of some 2,000 feet, and in a belt 150 miles long, and 50 miles wide, centering at Vantage on the Columbia River.

The Hydrolysis Of Ethyl Orthosilicate And Preparation Of Silicic Acid Gels From It, Matthew Woodrow Wilson Jun 1938

The Hydrolysis Of Ethyl Orthosilicate And Preparation Of Silicic Acid Gels From It, Matthew Woodrow Wilson

Honors Theses

Ethyl orthosilicate, (C2H5O)4Si, the ester of orthosilicic acid and ethyl alcohol, is a colorless liquid boiling at 165° C. It can be hydrolyzed to produce what is known as a hydrated silica sol or a sol of condensed silicic acid and ethyl alcohol; and under suitable conditions the hydrated silica sol or condensed silicic acid sol can be made to form a gel. It was decided to study the rates of the hydrolysis and gel formation.

We have thus two reactions to be studied: 1. Eteyl orthosilicate + water ► silicic acid or condensed silicic acid + ethyl alcohol. 2. …

Time Of Set And Ph In Silicic Acid Gels, E August Laurence Jun 1938

Time Of Set And Ph In Silicic Acid Gels, E August Laurence

Honors Theses

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the time of set and the hydrogen ion concentration of a silicic acid gel, basic in nature. A gel prepared from a mixture of 1.2511 normal sodium silicate solution and 1.0158 normal ammonium chloride was used for this purpose. The possibility of measuring the hydrogen ion concentration by the indicator method was used with considerable success by Prasad and Halliangadi (1). Previous work on this problem at Union by Marotta (2) pointed out the uncertainty of the glass electrode method due to the effect of the silicate on the electrode. The possibility …

Study And Correlation Of Belt And Cambrian Arkoses Near Limespur, Montana, Ryan C. Mcnamee Jun 1938

Study And Correlation Of Belt And Cambrian Arkoses Near Limespur, Montana, Ryan C. Mcnamee

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

In the vicinity of Limespur, Montana, a siding along the Northern Pacific Railroad near Whitehall, Montana, occurs a characteristic type of arkose where in many small red mineral grains are distributed throughout the rock mass. It is in this respect that this arkose differs from other arkoses in the surrounding region.

Solution To Theory Of Equations For Teachers And Graduate Students, Arthur Lawrence Birkholz Jun 1938

Solution To Theory Of Equations For Teachers And Graduate Students, Arthur Lawrence Birkholz

Bachelors’ Theses

This thesis is intended primarily for teachers and graduate students who often find it necessary to review all or part of the basic theorems in the study of equations. Dickson's excellent book on the subject, "First Course in the Theory of Equations", is a recognized authority, so to facilitate a study of this book the writer has worked the problems suggested by Dickson, because these problems, more than any explanation could, illustrate and simplify the theorems on equations.

The user of this work-must bear in mind that there may be several ways of working many of the problems, and hence …

The Surface Tension Of Ethylene Glycol With Various Additions, Walter W. Eichenberger Jun 1938

The Surface Tension Of Ethylene Glycol With Various Additions, Walter W. Eichenberger

Bachelors’ Theses

Ethylene glycol is a compound of great interest both from a practical and theoretical viewpoint. In its properties it lies midway between ethyl alcohol and glycerol. Several years ago this substance was a scientific curiosity and was produced solely by laboratory methods. At that time it had little commercial value principally because of its scar• city. However, the demand for glycol steadily rose after its many useful properties had become known until today it is a very common chemical staple. Such uses as in a non-freezing dynamite, as an anti-freeze for automobile cooling systems, as a hygrosoopic agent, as a …

A Study On The Origin Of Banded Agate, James E. Driscoll Jun 1938

A Study On The Origin Of Banded Agate, James E. Driscoll

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Agate in any of its varieties presents numerous problems in regard to its origin. Many types have been described and their beauty elaborated upon, but little has been written concerning their formation and the problems involved. The genesis of agate implicates an amazing complexity of physical and colloidal chemistry, as well as, various principles of geology.

Underground Stratigraphy Of Montana, Virgil R. Chamberlain Jun 1938

Underground Stratigraphy Of Montana, Virgil R. Chamberlain

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

The purpose of this thesis is to study the subsurface stratigraphy of the state of Montana from information acquired from well logs, composite logs, and measured sections. Underground stratigraphy is important for the intelligent prospecting for oil, gas, or water. A knowledge of the strata beneath us can be gathered only by measurements of numerous outcrops or by deep drilling with careful sampling or logging of the formations passed through.

The Jefferson Canyon Gypsum Deposit., Arthur Talpt Jun 1938

The Jefferson Canyon Gypsum Deposit., Arthur Talpt

Bachelors Theses and Reports, 1928 - 1970

Gypsum deposits are widespread geographically and are in many geologic formations. Ordinarily their character and origin, for the most part sedimentary, are not difficult to ascertain. Near Lewis and Clark Caverns, east of Whitehall, Montana, occurs a deposit of gypsum unique in many respects.

The Efficiency Of Approximation Formulae For Determining The Rate Of Interest In Amortization Schedules, Wade Ellis May 1938

The Efficiency Of Approximation Formulae For Determining The Rate Of Interest In Amortization Schedules, Wade Ellis

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

The problem of this study is to determine the relative efficiency of the more important formulae for approximating the rate of interest involved in an amortization plan when the amount of the debt, the amount of the periodic payment, and the number of periods are known. By efficiency this meant the degree of accuracy obtainable, and the time required for solution.
