Association Of An Arrow Point With Bison Occidentals In Nebraska, F. G. Meserve, Erwin H. Barbour Jan 1932

Association Of An Arrow Point With Bison Occidentals In Nebraska, F. G. Meserve, Erwin H. Barbour

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum

Of late, anthropological literature relative to the association of man and extinct mammals, especially bison and mammoth, has received many contributions from various and widely separated sources. Naturally the question has arisen whether man's advent in America is somewhat earlier than has been generally admitted, or whether certain extinct animals have persisted longer than has been realized. The issue is one of such importance and interest that even minor contributions seem desirable. It is well understood by all that the evidence, when submitted, will be properly weighed, and that conservative judges may rule out much or all of the testimony. …

The Electret - An Effort To Find The Cause Of Its Permanent Polarization, Ernest F. Lundeen Jan 1932

The Electret - An Effort To Find The Cause Of Its Permanent Polarization, Ernest F. Lundeen

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Certain waxes when solidified in a strong electric field exhibit unusual electrical properties. Several days after formation there is a polarization in the direction of the field which seems to persist for an indefinite length of time. The surface that was in contact with the anode during formation first ass a negative charge and then obtains a positive charge, which under proper conditions is practically permanent. The surface that was in contact with the cathode first has a positive charge and then obtains a negative charge which is the permanent charge.

Dielectric Constant Of Absorbed Water, Reiji Funabiki Jan 1932

Dielectric Constant Of Absorbed Water, Reiji Funabiki

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

That the dielectric constant of a substance is one of its important properties is a fact that has been very commonly taken into consideration by electrical engineers in design of apparatus and transmission lines. The importance of the dielectric constant is equally evident to the chemist working in the field of nonaqueous solutions, and Walden and others have spent a great deal of time and energy in attempting to measure the relationship of the dielectric constant of a solvent to its solvent ability, the degree of ionization of a solute dissolved in it, etc. Indeed it has become very common …

Test 201: Cletrac Model 25, Nebraska Tractor Test Lab

Nebraska Tractor Tests

All tractors tested at the Nebraska Tractor Test Laboratory were certified by their manufacturers as being stock model machines, conforming to specifications filed with the application for test. No special or high-test fuels were used except as recommended by the manufacturer as necessary.

All results within the official tractor test report were actually attained in tests and are without correction or allowances for friction, temperature, altitude, etc. The results were initially accomplished with the tractor in charge of skilled operators employed by the University.

Unless otherwise noted, each tractor was apparently in good condition at the end of the testing …

The Articulated Skeleton Of Titanotherium, Erwin H. Barbour Jan 1932

The Articulated Skeleton Of Titanotherium, Erwin H. Barbour

Bulletin of the University of Nebraska State Museum

The skeleton of a titanotherium, stored since 1894, was installed in the west corridor of Morrill Hall, April 28, 1931. In the meantime the specimen has been visited by many citizens, women's clubs, and especially by delegations of school children, boy scouts, and like organizations, from various parts of the State and elsewhere. Repeated requests for a popular report on this particular specimen actuates the writing of this leaflet. Titanotheres were by far the largest creatures of Oligocene time in Nebraska. In point of size they are called gigantic, elephantine, and titanic. The titans of Greek mythology were giants, and …

A Study Of The Colloid Obtained From Weathered Lignite, Cecil O. Lohn Jan 1932

A Study Of The Colloid Obtained From Weathered Lignite, Cecil O. Lohn

Theses and Dissertations

When Lignite is exposed to the action of weather it undergoes various changes, probably due to oxidation. Surface beds of lignite are often rejected by the miners as inferior coal, due to the weathered condition. But when this weathered lignite is treated with sodium hydroxide, and the resulting solution allowed to evaporate to dryness, there is left a hard, shiny substance very similar in appearance to hard coal. This dried product has been exploited under the name of Dakolite. When dispersed in water this product makes a very good wood stain.

Tests made on Dakolite show that it has colloidal …

A Study Of The Effect Of Temperature Upon Reactions Between Stannous And Arsenate Ions In Silicic Acid Gels, Ellis Elder Jan 1932

A Study Of The Effect Of Temperature Upon Reactions Between Stannous And Arsenate Ions In Silicic Acid Gels, Ellis Elder

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Chapter I: Statement of the Problem

The purpose of this investigation was to determine to what extent the reaction between stannous and arsenate ions in silicic acid gels is influenced by temperature.

This was to be done by observing (1) the rate of crystal growth; and (2) the appearance of the crystal growth in sets of gels identical in composition but kept at different temperatures throughout the process of crystal growth.

Radio And A Public Address System For The High School, Kenneth H. Westlake Jan 1932

Radio And A Public Address System For The High School, Kenneth H. Westlake

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

All the findings and knowledge of electricity and magnetism are not new; even the Greeks as far back as 600 B. C. knew something about these forces. As time went on the facts increased.

After the experiments of Faraday, Maxwell, Hertz and such men as these, electricity and magnetism became a vital part of human life and endeavor. Within the last twenty-five years the advances in electricity have been very rapid. The action of the electric current is a vital part of many developments and is helping to make human life more enjoyable and interesting.

Almost all schools today are …

Factors Affecting The Electrolytic Deposition Of Small Amounts Of Lead As Lead Dioxide And The Composition Of The Deposit, Thomas Gordon Day Jan 1932

Factors Affecting The Electrolytic Deposition Of Small Amounts Of Lead As Lead Dioxide And The Composition Of The Deposit, Thomas Gordon Day

Masters Theses

"The purpose of this investigation is to determine the best conditions for the quantitative deposition of lead when the content of this element is below 5 milligrams and to study the composition of the deposited PbO₂. The following conditions were studied during the course of the investigation. 1. The maximum amounts of copper and zinc permissible for the quantitative determination of lead. 2. Methods of separating lead from zinc when the latter element is present in amounts greater than are permitted in the determination of the lead. 3. The separation of lead from copper when this element is in greater …

The Extraction Of Waxes And Wax Mixtures By Means Of Common Organic Solvents, Bernard J. Finley Jan 1932

The Extraction Of Waxes And Wax Mixtures By Means Of Common Organic Solvents, Bernard J. Finley

Bachelors’ Theses

This work was performed with the intention of giving some information of the solubility of the more common waxes, by means of extraction with several commercial solvents. Besides the individual waxes, various mixtures of waxes were also used to determine the effect of the mixtures on the extractability.

Determinations are also made to find the extractable matter in a commercial furniture polish and shellac. The acid, saponification and iodine values of the polish and shellac are also found.

Very little work seems to have been done on the accurate determination of percentage of extractable matter in waxes and mixtures of …
