Analysis Of Rocks And Minerals By Attenuated Total Reflection With Atlas, Donald Franklin Anderson Jan 1975

Analysis Of Rocks And Minerals By Attenuated Total Reflection With Atlas, Donald Franklin Anderson

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Routine non-destructive analyses of rocks and minerals in slab or powder form maybe practicable by the application of the technique of attenuated total reflection [ATR] in infrared [IR] spectrophotometry.

An atlas of spectra would serve the analytical chemist and geologist, who in turn would serve the miner, the lapidarist, and other groups interested in rocks and minerals.

No effort has been made to produce an atlas of spectra of rocks and minerals by ATR. No ATR spectra of rocks and minerals were found in the literature. The history of ATR indicates that it is still in its early stages of …

Synthesis Of 1-Hydroxyethyl-2-Dimethyl Alkylammonium Surfactants And Their Properties In Aqueous Solution, Shin-Shin Chen Jan 1975

Synthesis Of 1-Hydroxyethyl-2-Dimethyl Alkylammonium Surfactants And Their Properties In Aqueous Solution, Shin-Shin Chen

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

A general synthetic method for the synthesis of a new class of chiral surfactants with reactive OH groups was investigated. The surfactarits were made by quaternizing the corresponding tertiary amine, in isopropyl alcohol. These surfactants with -OH groups may form tightly-packed non-spherical micelles in the presence of WaOH or alkylamine and these .micelles, just like enzyme catalysts, may serve as stereoselective templates. In order to evaluate this stereospecificity, a kinetic study of the reactivity of several chi~al reactants in the presence of these micelles, was initiated. The first-order rate constant K for 4- nitrostyrene formation from p-nitrophenethyl trimethylammonium iodide in …

System Reliability: Exact Bayesian Intervals Compared With Fiducial Intervals, Kathryn P. Berkbigler, James K. Byers Jan 1975

System Reliability: Exact Bayesian Intervals Compared With Fiducial Intervals, Kathryn P. Berkbigler, James K. Byers

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper compares numerically two different, widely used lower limit estimates for the reliability of a series system: Bayesian limits and fiducial limits. The fiducial limits are obtained by Monte Carlo simulation because of its simplicity and ease of computer programming. Subsystem failures are s-independent and exponentially distributed; life test data are available for estimating the failure rate of each system. Seasonal Changes In A Population Of Pseudanopthalmus Tenuis (Coleoptera, Carabidae) In Murray Spring Cave, Indiana: A Preliminary Report, James H. Keith Jan 1975

Seasonal Changes In A Population Of Pseudanopthalmus Tenuis (Coleoptera, Carabidae) In Murray Spring Cave, Indiana: A Preliminary Report, James H. Keith

International Journal of Speleology

A study of a population of Pseudanophthalmus tenuis is being conducted in Murray Spring Cave, Orange County, Indiana as one facet of a larger research project encompassing the entire terrestrial community of that cave. Changes in behaviour and abundance determined by census and mark-recapture methods and physiological changes determined from field-collected beetles indicates that these animals exhibit a seasonal reproductive rhythm probably mediated or controlled by winter and spring flooding of the cave.

Colorado River Regional Assessment Study Part Three: Area-Specific Water Quality Analysis And Environmental Assessment, Utah Water Research Laboratory

Reports

The Colorado River Bain contains the most diverse environment setting of any American river. High mountainous elevations (>14,000 feet) are ultimately succeeded by sea level plains and low valleys. Geological structures and formations include deep, intricately carved river canyons, high mountain slopes, large saline shale structures, and long verdant irrigated river valleys. Fir forests are succeeded by arid rangelands. The river produces the lowest outflow per unit area (60 acre feet per square mile) of any river basin in the United States. It contains the largest number of unique and endangered species in the United States. Finally, it is …

A Technique For Predicting The Aquatic Ecosystem Response To Weather Modification, Eugene K. Israelsen, David R. Bernard, Thomas M. Twedt, Henry M. Runke

Reports

In the past, considerable effort has been spent on the development of techniques for increasing precipitation from a given cloud formation. However, little attention has been given to identifying and evaluating the impacts of cloud seeing activities on the aquatic ecosystems within the affected areas. The objective of this study was to apply the simulation technique to predict the impacts of cloud seeing on the aquatic ecosystem within the area subject to weather modification. A small mountain watershed near Logan, Utah, was selected for the study. Measurements were made of the significant parameter levels under current conditions. A hydrologic and …

Regional Development: An Econometric Study Of The Role Of Water Development In Effectuating Population And Income Changes, Herbert H. Fullerton, Chris W. Lewis, Jay C. Andersen, John E. Keith, Reed Willis Jan 1975

Regional Development: An Econometric Study Of The Role Of Water Development In Effectuating Population And Income Changes, Herbert H. Fullerton, Chris W. Lewis, Jay C. Andersen, John E. Keith, Reed Willis

Reports

Twelve measures of regional economic growth, including populations and three measures of income were compared for areas with and without water investment in 246 counties and 42 water resources subareas in the states of Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, and Nevada. Simple mean omparisons for these measures compiled for the decades of 1940-1950, 1950-1960, and 1960-1970 failed to support the hypothesis that economic growth of those counties and subareas receiving water investment was significantly highter than in those areas which did not, with the possible exception of the 1940-1950 decade. This result is obciously tempered by the fact …

Urban Storm Runoff Inlet Hydrograph Study Volume 2; Laboratory Studies Of The Resistance Coefficient For Sheet Flow Over Natural Turf Surfaces, Cheng-Lung Chen

Reports

The main objective of this study is to develop an accurate design method for computing inlet hydrogaphs of surface runoff, with average recurrence intervals of 10, 25, and 50 years, from typical urban highway by flood routing technique. Resistance to sheet flows over natural turf surfaces is experimentally investigated. The formuation of a functional relationship between the resistence coefficient and controlling parameters for shallow flows over various turf surfaces is essential to the mathematical modeling of surface runoff from urban highway sideslopes covered with different species of turf. An analysis of results obtained from laboratory experiments from laminar flow on …

A Population Study Of The Cave Beetle Ptomaphagus Loedingi (Coleoptera; Leiodidae; Catopinae), Stewart B. Peck Jan 1975

A Population Study Of The Cave Beetle Ptomaphagus Loedingi (Coleoptera; Leiodidae; Catopinae), Stewart B. Peck

International Journal of Speleology

Baited pitfall traps were used in Barclay Cave, Alabama, in 1965 to study a blind Ptomaphagus beetle population. A 40m2 area in the cave yielded 95% of the 897 adult and larval beetles trapped in the cave at 9 stations. This represented a population density of about 13 beetles/m2. Tests of different baits showed decayed meat to be the most attractive. Adults were most abundant in mid-August when substrate conditions were moist, were reproductively active, and were not newly emerged from pupal cells. Larvae were most abundant in late August. The population was studied by mark-recapture methods …

International Journal of Speleology

During the past several years, members of the Association for Mexican Cave Studies have made some surprising additions to the knowledge of the invertebrate fauna of Mexico. None of their finds is more exciting than the species described here, a millipede much larger than the nearest epigean relative in an order outstanding for its scarcity of troglobitic adaptations. The absence of ocelli and the reduction of body pigment in the known epigean typhlobolellids suggest that they are deep humus dwellers preadapted for cave life.

Applications Of Metrics Over Tikonov Semifields And Fixed Points In Hilbert Spaces, John David Kubicek Jan 1975

Applications Of Metrics Over Tikonov Semifields And Fixed Points In Hilbert Spaces, John David Kubicek

Doctoral Dissertations

"For Non expansive mappings on locally convex spaces, sufficient conditions are given for the set of fixed points to be a Non expansive retract. Also, sufficient conditions are given for certain semigroups of asymptotically Non expansive mappings to have a common fixed point.

Several results concerning convergence of the sequence of iterates in metric spaces are generalized to Hausdorff uniform spaces.

In Hilbert spaces, sufficient conditions are given for convergence of a Mann iteration process of strictly quasi pseudo contractive mappings. An example is given to show the process does not, in general, converge for pseudo contractive mappings"-- Abstract, p. …

The Banana Industry At Carnarvon, John Roger Burt Jan 1975

The Banana Industry At Carnarvon, John Roger Burt

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

In viewing the semi-arid conditions of the West Gascoyne, visitors are surprised to see a thriving banana industry at the mouth of the Gascoyne River, 930 kilometres north of Perth. The natural vegetation in the plantation area consists mainly of stunted gums, low acacia scrub and salt bush.

Despite the adverse climatic conditions, the average yields of Carnarvon bananas are double those of banana areas in other states.

Population Ecology, Desiccation, And Food Resources With Respect To Angle Of Substrate For Two Limpets, Collisella (Acmaea) Digitalis And Collisella (Acmaea) Scabra, Linda Susan Collins

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Two common limpets, Collis~ (Acmaea) digitalis and Collisella (Acmaea) scabra have overlapping distributions in the upper int.ertidal .spray zone. Haven (1971) found that Q. digitalis is more abundant on vertical surfaces while Q. scabra dominates horizontal surfaces. He assumed this preference to be due to differential abilities to withstand desiccation. In this study I report field work demonstrating a high correlation between the-ratio of abundance of Q. digitalis/ Q. scabra and angle of slope of substrate. Length (mm) of Q. scabra declines linearly with angle, but Q. digitalis shows no such trends. Results of laboratory measurements of angle of substrate …

Fluid Inclusion Geothermometry Of Tri-State Sphalerite, Chi-Sheng Wei Jan 1975

Fluid Inclusion Geothermometry Of Tri-State Sphalerite, Chi-Sheng Wei

Masters Theses

"Fluid inclusions in successively deposited generations of sphalerite from the Tri-State district have been examined for geothermometry as a function of time. The main stage of vug-filling sphalerite has been studied most intensively and as many as 83 fluid inclusions have been examined in a single crystal. These sphalerite crystals are commonly zoned, and their filling temperatures exhibit a general pattern of declining temperature from their cores outward, from about 135°C down to 90°C. The decline is not a steady one, but rather it is characterized by fluctuations commonly about 15-20°C. Some fluctuations have magnitudes as great as 50-60°C, with …

Food Habits Of Young-Of-The-Year Fishes In Abbey Pond, South Dakota, Randall D. Radant Jan 1975

Food Habits Of Young-Of-The-Year Fishes In Abbey Pond, South Dakota, Randall D. Radant

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Food habits of young-of-the-year largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus), black crappie (Pomoxis nigromaculatus), yellow bullhead (Ictalurus natalis), and yellow perch (Perca flavescens) were studied during 1973 and 1974 in Abbey Pond, South Dakota. Organisms found in young-of-the-year fish stomachs and in plankton samples were identified and counted in the laboratory. Zooplankton, aquatic insects and fish were the most important food organisms consumed by young fishes. Using Ivlev’s electivity index food electivity by the fishes for zooplankton was calculated. The size-specific food habits of young-of-the-year largemouth bass progressed from entomostracans to aquatic insects to fish. In most cases zooplanktons …
