Cross-Bedding In The White River Formation Of Northwestern South Dakota, Dean E. Winchester Jan 1913

Cross-Bedding In The White River Formation Of Northwestern South Dakota, Dean E. Winchester

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Rocks of White River (Oligocene) age have been known for many years to constitute numerous isolated buttes and mesas in the northwest corner of South Dakota, but no detailed study of their character and structural relations had been made until 1911, when, during an examination of the lignite area of that country, the writer had occasion to study the relation of the younger rocks to those containing lignite beds.

Todd, in 1895, recognized the White River formation in the Slim Buttes and called attention to the area in the following language:

3. Miocene beds, both White River and Loup Fork, …

Bulletin No. 122 - The Nature Of The Dry Farm Soils Of Utah, John A. Widtsoe, Robert Stewart Jan 1913

Bulletin No. 122 - The Nature Of The Dry Farm Soils Of Utah, John A. Widtsoe, Robert Stewart

UAES Bulletins

Successful farming in Utah is dependent upon two main factors: First, the economic use of irrigation water upon the lands lying under the irrigation ditch, and second, upon the correct practice of the principles of dry farming upon those lands not susceptible to irrigation. Dry farming in Utah is, therefore, of great importance and it becomes essential to learn something of the nature of the dry farming soils of the State.

Bulletin No. 121 - The Soil Of The Southern Utah Experiment Station, John A. Widtsoe, Robert Stewart Jan 1913

Bulletin No. 121 - The Soil Of The Southern Utah Experiment Station, John A. Widtsoe, Robert Stewart

UAES Bulletins

The soil of the Southern Utah Experiment Farm is a very interesting type: it is highly charged with gypsum and thereby presents a condition unique in reported studies of the soils of America. Gypsiferous soils are characteristic of a large portion of Southern Utah; many of them are derived from shale, others from sandstone, impregnated with gypsum.

Cement Manufacture In Nebraska, Erwin Hinckley Barbour Jan 1913

Cement Manufacture In Nebraska, Erwin Hinckley Barbour

Conservation and Survey Division

It is the purpose of this paper to briefly review the history of cement manufacture in the State, to call attention to certain promising exposures of cement rock, and to report upon the first modern cement mill in Nebraska. Not that this State has been slow in recognizing cement as one of the most important modern constructional materials; or slow to recognize the need of developing its natural resources; but due rather to a combination of circumstances. For at least twenty years, many Nebraskans have had in mind the importance of establishing cement plants in this State. Furthermore encouraging inducements …

Notice Of Newly Discovered Eurypterids In Nebraska, Erwin Hinckley Barbour Nov 1912

Notice Of Newly Discovered Eurypterids In Nebraska, Erwin Hinckley Barbour

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

A BED of Eurypterids has just been discovered by the Nebraska Geological Survey in the Carboniferous shales of southeastern Nebraska, and thus a new locality is added to the list for the United States. Such localities are somewhat rare, and notice of any and every new one must be acceptable.

The Carboniferous outcrops are confined to some eight or ten counties in the extreme southeastern corner of the state, and though covered heavily by glacial clays, bold exposures occur in proximity to the bolder streams, especially the Missouri River. About a mile south of Peru, on the Missouri River front, …

Temperature Conditions At Orono, Maine, Ernest Claude Drew Jun 1912

Temperature Conditions At Orono, Maine, Ernest Claude Drew

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is an outgrowth of a much larger piece of work which the Department of Physics, thru its instructors and major students, has undertaken to complete. The task referred to, is the compilation, arrangement, and summarizing of the various meteorological records taken at the University of Maine for the past forty-four years. These records were begun in the above department by Dr. M. C. Fernald in the year 1869 and were continued by him until 1893. The work was then transferred to the Experiment Station, where observations were made under the direction of Doctors W. H. Jordan and C. …

Bulletin No. 115 - The Movement Of Water In Irrigated Soils, J. A. Widtsoe, W. W. Mclaughlin May 1912

Bulletin No. 115 - The Movement Of Water In Irrigated Soils, J. A. Widtsoe, W. W. Mclaughlin

UAES Bulletins

This bulletin embodies a part of the data secured in the irrigation investigations of this Station. It aims to contribute something to our knowledge of the movement of water in irrigated soils . The science of irrigation can not well be built until the laws involved in the mutual relationships of waters, soils and crops are understood with fair accuracy. Much has been done by numerous investigators, during the last fifty years, to give a clearer comprehension of the movement of soil moisture; but the field experiments have dealt largely with saturated soils, and the laboratory experiments have seldom taken …

A Process For The Separation Of Barite And Sphalerite, Cairy C. Conover, Edwin Robinson Morris Jan 1912

A Process For The Separation Of Barite And Sphalerite, Cairy C. Conover, Edwin Robinson Morris

Bachelors Theses

"The present price of zinc has stimulated a greater interest in Sphalerite Barite separations than has been manifested for some time. A great many processes have been worked on and have failed for many reasons, the main one being that the physical characteristics of the ore varied so much. The process that is successful must be independent of these variations. The following process is one that depends on a chemical phenomenon and is adapted to any sphalerite-barite separation. This series of experiments was performed by the authors at the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, Rolla, Mo. and was embodied …

The Determination Of The Settling Velocity Of Certain Minerals Common In Ore-Dressing, Oscar N. Bribach, Robert Winters Johnson

Bachelors Theses

"The object of this thesis is to determine the settling velocity of certain minerals common in ore-dressing work. The minerals used in the experiments were marcasite and chert. These two minerals were chosen because there was a convenient supply of both from which pure and uniform particles could be obtained"--page 4.

Checker Board Drainage Due To Eroded Dikes, Julian Adolph Hielscher Jan 1912

Checker Board Drainage Due To Eroded Dikes, Julian Adolph Hielscher

Bachelors Theses

"The conclusions here drawn are the results of observations made during the past ten summers spent in this region while camping, fishing, and hunting; at first, with the native game wardens and fire rangers; later on independently or in company with some of the many tourists who annually visit this delightful region. In this manner it has been possible to cross and re-cross this territory in almost every direction. The highways into this wilderness are the streams and lakes and the only method of travel is by canoe, though short excursions can be made over land by following the paths …

A Study Of The Precipitation Of Iron Di-Sulphide And Its Relation To Certain Types Of Deposits, Vachel Harry Mcnutt Jan 1912

A Study Of The Precipitation Of Iron Di-Sulphide And Its Relation To Certain Types Of Deposits, Vachel Harry Mcnutt

Masters Theses

"Very few of the interesting points bearing upon the formation of iron di-sulphide will be treated in this paper. The laboratory tests made are considered to have been sufficiently thorough to substantiate the ideas set forth so that exhaustive tests were not necessary. While the field evidence was collected largely in the Joplin district of Missouri, the conclusions are sufficiently generalized to be applicable to any district in which pyrite and marcasite have been derived from cold solutions"--page 2.

Bulletin No. 114 - The Movement Of Nitric Nitrogen In Soil And Its Relation To "Nitrogen Fixation", Robert Stewart, J. E. Greaves Dec 1911

Bulletin No. 114 - The Movement Of Nitric Nitrogen In Soil And Its Relation To "Nitrogen Fixation", Robert Stewart, J. E. Greaves

UAES Bulletins

In the spring of 1903, we commenced at the Utah Experiment Station a series of experiments, the purpose of which was to study the development and movement of nitrates in irrigated soil. The work was so outlined that it should give some very definite results, both as to the influence of water and the plant, upon the nitric nitrogen content of the soil.

A Summary Of The Theories Of The Origin Of The Lake Superior Copper Ores, With Evidences Pertaining Thereto, Eva Endurance Hirdler Jan 1911

A Summary Of The Theories Of The Origin Of The Lake Superior Copper Ores, With Evidences Pertaining Thereto, Eva Endurance Hirdler

Bachelors Theses

"In each of the foregoing theories we obtain sound reasoning in connection with many facts. Therefore a correlation of these facts ought to give us enough material to deduct a sound theory. The most plausible supposition seems to be that all metallic ores are derived ultimately from the interior of the earth, from a great metallographic province, when they are delivered by igneous eruptives near or at the surface"--Conclusion With Reasons, page 29.

A Comparison Of The Silver Losses Due To Cupellation Using Different Kinds Of Cupels, James A. Taggart, Anton Frederick Karte Jan 1911

A Comparison Of The Silver Losses Due To Cupellation Using Different Kinds Of Cupels, James A. Taggart, Anton Frederick Karte

Bachelors Theses

"In this thesis our object has been to ascertain the silver losses in cupellation with different kinds of cupel materials, thereby determining the efficiency of the various materials used for making cupels. When beginning this work we hardly expected to find such differences in behavior of the various cupels used. However we refer the reader to our curves to see what really happened"--page 2.
