Optimized Measurements Of Discharge And Suspended Sediment Transport In A Salt Marsh Drainage System, John D. Boon Jan 1974

Optimized Measurements Of Discharge And Suspended Sediment Transport In A Salt Marsh Drainage System, John D. Boon

VIMS Articles

Detailed measurements of current speed and suspended sedlment concentration distributions in a channel cross-section of a tidal marsh creek were analyzed. Subsequent sampiing Intervals In time and space were selected to provide acceptable estimates of flood and ebb transport of water and suspended sediment post the cross sectlon. Data from eight 13-hour measurement runs taken at various times of the year seem to favor a net ebb resldual of suspended sedlment transport for the year In question.

A number of environmental factors appear to Influence suspended sediment trons· port in marsh channels.Residual transport of sediment In these systems is, however, …

Solvability Of Differential Systems Near Singular Points, Leon M. Hall Jan 1974

Solvability Of Differential Systems Near Singular Points, Leon M. Hall

Doctoral Dissertations

"Functional analysis techniques are used to prove a theorem, analogous to the Harris-Sibuya-Weinberg theorem for ordinary differential equations, which yields as corollaries a number of existence theorems for holomorphic solutions of linear functional differential systems of the form zDy'(z) = A(z)y(z) + B(z)y(αz) + C(z)y'(αz) in the neighborhood of the singularity at z = 0"--Abstract, page 2.

Models For Molecular Vibration, Allan Bruce Capps Jan 1974

Models For Molecular Vibration, Allan Bruce Capps

Masters Theses

“The purpose of the investigation is to determine if a classical model can be used to characterize molecular vibrational and librational (restricted rotation) frequencies. In general, the model treats a molecule as asymmetrical and rigid and simulates the intermolecular forces by springs along the bonds. Molecules constrained to a plane and molecules free to move in three dimensions are analyzed. The frequencies of water molecules are investigated, in particular. The model and analytic components are found to function well. Within the limits set for the model, the water molecule simulation is not successful as the motion becomes anharmonic for energy …

Interpretation Of Imagery Lineations, Logan Creek Area, Southeast Missouri, Gregory Paul Smith Jan 1974

Interpretation Of Imagery Lineations, Logan Creek Area, Southeast Missouri, Gregory Paul Smith

Masters Theses

"Depletion of ore in Missouri's old lead districts and the opening of the state's new lead district adds impetus to understanding and delineating geologic structure in and adjacent to the new lead district. Image and geomorphic analysis, hydrologic data, and subsurface structural contour mapping are used in interpretation of geologic structure in Dent, Shannon, Reynolds, and Carter counties, Missouri. Unlike the time consuming surface geologic mapping, the modes of investigation used in this study enabled the writer to make a larger, regional-scale study with results comparable to those attainable by surface mapping. The area is covered by thick residual soils …

Structural Strain In Small Prenucleation Water Clusters, Donald E. Hagen Jan 1974

Structural Strain In Small Prenucleation Water Clusters, Donald E. Hagen

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A method is developed for incorporating strain energy into a microphysical treatment of small prenucleation water clusters. The molecules are arranged in a clathrate-cage structure, and this structure is allowed to relax to minimize the strain energy resulting from hydrogen bond stretching and bending. The method is applied to various cluster sizes up to 130 molecules and the results are compared with the classical liquid drop model. The effect of anharmonic terms in the interaction is included.

Charge Transfer Between O Ions And O2 Molecules In The Ground State And Singlet Delta Excited State, R. F. Mathis, William R. Snow

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A crossed-beam apparatus has been used to study charge transfer between O- ions and O2 molecules in the ground state and in the metastable, singlet delta, excited state. The energy of the incident ions ranged from 10 to 10000 eV. The cross section for charge transfer between O - and ground state O2 was found to have a maximum of 7.8X10-16 cm2 at about 5 keV. At the lower energies there is good agreement with the previous measurements of Snow et al. and Rutherford and Turner who also used crossed beam techniques. The cross section for charge transfer between O- …

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

A proof that: for any given polyhedron so shaped that every closed non-self intersecting broken line composed of edges of the polyhedron divides the surface of the polyhedron into precisely two disjoint regions each of which is bounded by the closed broken line, v - e + f = 2, where v is the number of vertices of the polyhedron, e the number of edges and f the number of faces.

Self-Sustaining Rainbow Trout (Salmo Gairdneri) Population In Mcconaughy Reservoir, Nebraska, Rodney C. Van Velson Jan 1974

Self-Sustaining Rainbow Trout (Salmo Gairdneri) Population In Mcconaughy Reservoir, Nebraska, Rodney C. Van Velson

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: Staff Research Publications

A self-sustaining rainbow trout population has developed in the North Platte River drainage. This population inhabits McConaughy Reservoir and reproduces successfully in tributary streams of the North Platte River located approximately 11.3 to 145 km above the reservoir. Fall and spring spawning populations migrate from the reservoir.

Scale analysis indicated 92% of the juveniles had spent 1 yr and 8% had spent 2 yr in the stream before the spring migration to the reservoir as 175-250 mm smolts. In the 1965-1969 spawning populations 1.3 life history categories were present. The spawning runs were composed of 76% maiden spawners, 22% second-year …

Samphire For Waterlogged Salt Land, C V. Malcolm, G. J. Cooper Jan 1974

Samphire For Waterlogged Salt Land, C V. Malcolm, G. J. Cooper

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

For non-waterlogged and mildly waterlogged salt land a number of salt-tolerant shrubs may be used for forage production.

Areas which are highly saline and regularly waterlogged are not suited to these shrubs. However, during trials with shrub species, samphires (Arthrocnemum spp.) were found to volunteer and grow well on these sites.

Research into the use of samphires has shown that it is possible to harvest seed and obtain a seed sample suitable for sowing through a drill. Established samphire stands provide useful grazing in many parts of the Western Australian wheatbelt.

Biostratigraphic And Lithostratigraphic Analysis Of The Hindsville Limestone (Mississippian) In Northwestern Arkansas, Robert C. Grayson Jr. Jan 1974

Biostratigraphic And Lithostratigraphic Analysis Of The Hindsville Limestone (Mississippian) In Northwestern Arkansas, Robert C. Grayson Jr.

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Several lithofacies can be recognized within the Hindsville Limestone (Mississippian) in its type area near Hindsville, Madison County, Arkansas. Lithofacies are based on petrographic analysis of matrix and constituent particles, particularly ooliths and skeletal grains. Hindsville deposition began with skeletal calcilutite incorporating chert rubble from the underlying Boone Formation. Increasing energy produced a sequence of skeletal calcarenites and oolites, and the end of Hindsville deposition was marked by a return to impure skeletal calcilutite. Conodonts recovered from the Hindsville Limestone include species of Cavusgnathus and Gnathodus. On the basis of reported ranges of these elements, the Hindsville appears to correlate …

A Characterization Of Metric Spheres In Hyperbolic Space By Morse Theory, Thomas E. Cecil Jan 1974

A Characterization Of Metric Spheres In Hyperbolic Space By Morse Theory, Thomas E. Cecil

Mathematics and Computer Science Department Faculty Scholarship

Let Mn be a differentiable manifold of class C¥. By a Morse function f on Mn, we mean a differentiable function f on Mn having only non-degenerate critical points. A well-known topological result of Reeb states that if Mn is compact and there is a Morse function f on Mn having exactly 2 critical points, then Mn is homeomorphic to an n-sphere, Sn (see, for example, [3], p. 25).

In a recent paper, [4], Nomizu and Rodriguez found a geometric characterization of a Euclidean n-sphere Sn Ì …

One thousand five hundred catchable brown trout (17-26 cm) were stocked into the South Fork of the Yellowbank River May 17, 1973. Samples were taken one month apart from May 22, 1973, through October 29, 1973. Fifteen-minute drift samples were collected every hour for 24 hours and trout were captured every 4 hours. Trout captured ruing the study varied in condition ® from 1.34 to 2.55. Condition progressively decreased through August, rose in September, and decreased again by the October sample. The average weight of brown trout increased through the September sample and decreased in October. Two peaks in number …

Geology And Hydrology Of The El Converto Cave-Spring System, Southwestern Puerto Rico, Barry F. Beck Jan 1974

Geology And Hydrology Of The El Converto Cave-Spring System, Southwestern Puerto Rico, Barry F. Beck

International Journal of Speleology

Whereas the North Coast Tertiary Limestones of Puerto Rico are classic karst locales, their southern counterparts are almost devoid of karst development. The El Convento Cave-Spring System is the most prominent feature of the only large scale karst area developed on the South Coast Tertiary limestones. The karst topography is localized on the middle Juana Diaz Formation, which is a reef facies limestone, apparently because of the high density and low permeability of this zone as compared to the surrounding chalks and marls. In the El Convento System a sinking ephemeral stream combines with the flow from two perennial springs …

Un Nouvel Asellide Interstitiel D'Espagne Méridionale Bragasellus Boui N. Sp. (Crustacea Isopoda Asellota) Et Considérations Sur Les Genres Européens D'Asellides, Jean-Paul Henry, Guy Magniez

International Journal of Speleology

Description of a new, unpigmented and eyeless Asellid, belonging to the iberian genus Bragasellus Henry et Magniez, 1968. Bragasellus boui, n.sp., lives on the bottom of a river that is a tributary of Guadalquivir River (Southern Spain). Bragasellus, Proasellus, Stygasellus and Synasellus are four genuine phyletic lines of European Asellidae, all of them independent of each other, and the authors confirm their validity as true genera.

Un Diploure Japygidé Cavernicole Inėdit De Corse Dipljapyx Beroni N.Sp., J. Pages

International Journal of Speleology

Dipljapyx beroni n.sp. has been collected from two caves in Corsica. From its antennae with 31 articles, chaetotaxia of urites and subcoxal organs well-characterized, it appears to be an endemic Corsican species, situated between D. humberti Grassi found in the western Alps, and D. italicus Silv. peculiar to the Italian Peninsula. It is closely related to the first of those two species. There is no morphologic feature indicating it as a troglophilic species.

Size And Growth Of The Eyes Of The Troglobitic Salamander Typhiotriton Spelaeus, Joseph C. Besharse, Ronald A. Brandon Jan 1974

Size And Growth Of The Eyes Of The Troglobitic Salamander Typhiotriton Spelaeus, Joseph C. Besharse, Ronald A. Brandon

International Journal of Speleology

The eyes of larval T. spelaeus grow by negative allometry, but in allometric coefficients they are not greatly different from E. lucifuga. The major differences in eye size, both absolute and relative to body size, between T. spelaeus and E. lucifuga are established prior Io the larval growth period. The eyes of T. spelaeus cease to grow at metamorphosis and are reduced in size thereafter. In addition, there is increased individual variability and bilateral asymmetry of eye size in adult T. spelaeus compared to both adult E. lucifuga and larval T. spelaeus. This variability, expressed as relative dispersion …

Towards A Theory Of Universal Speed-Independent Modules, Robert M. Keller Jan 1974

Towards A Theory Of Universal Speed-Independent Modules, Robert M. Keller

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

Of concern here are asynchronous modules, i.e., those whose activity is regulated by initiation and completion signals with no clocks being present. First a number of operating conditions are described that are deemed essential or useful in a system of asynchronous modules, while retaining an air of independence of particular hardware implementations as much as possible. Second, some results are presented concerning sets of modules that are universal with respect to these conditions. That is, from these sets any arbitrarily complex module may be constructed as a network. It is stipulated that such constructions be speed independent, i.e., independent of …

Bayesian Confidence Limits For The Reliability Of Mixed Cascade And Parallel Independent Exponential Subsystems, James K. Byers, Ronald W. Skeith, Melvin D. Springer Jan 1974

Bayesian Confidence Limits For The Reliability Of Mixed Cascade And Parallel Independent Exponential Subsystems, James K. Byers, Ronald W. Skeith, Melvin D. Springer

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper deals with the theoretical problem of deriving Bayesian confidence intervals for the reliability of a system consisting of both cascade and parallel subsystems where each subsystem is independent and has an exponential failure probability density function (pdf). This approach is applicable when test data are available for each individual subsystem and not for the entire system. The Mellin integral transform is used to analyze the system in a step-by-step procedure until the posterior pdf of the system reliability is obtained. The posterior cumulative distribution function is then obtained in the usual manner by integrating the pdf, which serves …

High-Temperature Annealing In Electron-Irradiated Cds, David C. Look Jan 1974

High-Temperature Annealing In Electron-Irradiated Cds, David C. Look

Physics Faculty Publications

The room‐temperature irradiation of as‐grown n‐type CdS by 1‐MeV electrons results in an increase in carrier concentration. The damage anneals in the temperature range 250–300°C, and a study of the annealing kinetics reveals an activation energy of about 1.3 eV which is attributed to sulfur‐vacancy motion.
