Gps Velocity Field In The Transition From Subduction To Collision Of The Eastern Sunda And Banda Arcs, Indonesia, Hendro Nugroho

Campaign GPS measurements during 2001-2003 in the transition between subduction and collision of the Banda arc reveal how strain is partitioned away from the trench and distributed to other parts of the arc-trench system. Genrich, et. al. (1996) conducted a GPS campaign (1992-1994) throughout the Eastern Sunda and Banda arcs that demonstrated partial accretion of the arc to the Australian plate. We reoccupied many of the sites from this earlier study and 7 additional stations, 3 of which are new benchmarks. Our study shortened many baselines and extended the observation epoch to ten years for many key stations. The resulting …

Analysis of foraminifera for synorogenic pelagic units of Rote and Savu Islands, Indonesia, reveals high rates of surface uplift in the past 1.5 Ma of the incipient Banda arc-continent collision. Paleodepth estimates are derived from benthonic forams and ages from planktonic forams. But estimates are complicated, however, by abundant reworking; yet several distinctive species have been found. Synorogenic deposits in western Rote yield forams of biozone Neogene (N) 18 and depths from 5000-5700 meters at the base of the section, and 3600 meters at the top of the section. Phase-Matching Optimization Of Laser High-Order Harmonics Generated In A Gas Cell, Julia Robin Miller Sutherland

Ten-millijoule, thirty-five femtosecond, 800 nm (~40 nm bandwidth) laser pulses are used to study high-order harmonic generation in helium- and neon-filled gas cells of various lengths. Harmonic orders in the range of 50 to 100 are investigated. A semi-infinite cell geometry produces brighter harmonics than cells of sub-centimeter length. In the semi-infinite geometry, the gas occupies the region from the focusing lens to a thin exit foil near the laser focus. Counter-propagating light is used to directly probe where the high harmonics are generated within the laser focus and to investigate phase matching. The ability of robots to autonomously perform tasks is increasing. More autonomy in robots means that the human managing the robot may have available free time. Web documents that are either partially or completely duplicated in content are easily found on the Internet these days. Not only do these documents create redundant information on the Web, which take longer to filter unique information and cause additional storage space, but also they degrade the efficiency of Web information retrieval. Many learning algorithms attempt, either explicitly or implicitly, to discover useful high-order features. When considering all possible functions that could be encountered, no particular type of high-order feature should be more useful than any other. However, this paper presents arguments and empirical results that suggest that for the learning problems typically encountered in practice, some high-order features may be more useful than others.

Recurrently-connected spiking neural networks are difficult to use and understand because of the complex nonlinear dynamics of the system. Through empirical studies of spiking networks, we deduce several principles which are critical to success. Network parameters such as synaptic time delays and time constants and the connection probabilities can be adjusted to have a significant impact on accuracy. We show how to adjust these parameters to fit the type of problem.

Time Invariance And Liquid State Machines, Eric Goodman, Dan A. Ventura

Time invariant recognition of spatiotemporal patterns is a common task of signal processing. Liquid state machines (LSMs) are a paradigm which robustly handle this type of classification. Using an artificial dataset with target pattern lengths ranging from 0.1 to 1.0 seconds, we train an LSM to find the start of the pattern with a mean absolute error of 0.18 seconds. Also, LSMs can be trained to identify spoken digits, 1-9, with an accuracy of 97.6%, even with scaling by factors ranging from 0.5 to 1.5.

Cubical complexes are defined in a manner analogous to that for simplicial complexes, the chief difference being that cubical complexes are unions of cubes rather than of simplices. A very natural cubical complex to consider is the complex C(k_1,...,k_n) where k_1,...,k_n are nonnegative integers. This complex has as its underlying space [0,k_1]x...x[0,k_n] subset of R^n with vertices at all points having integer coordinates and higher dimensional cubes formed by the vertices in the natural way. Upper Mantle Reflectivity Beneath An Intracratonic Basin: Insights Into The Behavior Of The Mantle Beneath Illinois Basin., Maxwell Sunday Okure

Reflectivity images of the lower crust and uppermost mantle beneath the Illinois basin have been derived from reprocessing of several hundred kilometers of industry seismic reflection data using extended vibroseis recorrelation. The recorrelation was based on extending an originally 4-s correlated record, acquired with a 16-s sweep from 14 to 126 Hz, to the absolute limit of the full 20 s (~70 km) listening travel time. The reconstructed bandwidth includes frequency components suitable for imaging structures from signals received from both sedimentary basin reflectors and those received from reflectors in the deep crust and upper mantle. In this thesis, we study the representation theory of the automorphism group Aut (Fn) of a free group by studying the representation theory of three finite subgroups: two symmetric groups, Sn and Sn+1, and a Coxeter group of type Bn, also known as a hyperoctahedral group. The representation theory of these subgroups is well understood in the language of Young Diagrams, and we apply this knowledge to better understand the representation theory of Aut (Fn). We also calculate irreducible representations of Aut (Fn) in low dimensions and for small n.

The first part of our work is a statistical and geometric study of properties of Thompson's Group F. We enumerate the number of elements of F which are represented by a reduced pair of n-caret trees, and give asymptotic estimates. We also discuss the effects on word length and number of carets of right multiplication by a standard generator x0 or x1. We enumerate the average number of carets along the left edge of an n-caret tree, and use an Euler transformation to make some conjectures relating to right multiplication by a generator. A pension plan administrator promises certain benefits in the future in exchange for labor today. In order to budget for this expense and create more security for the participant, the administrator uses a pension cost method. Each cost method assigns a portion of the future liability to the current year. This is called the normal cost. We calculate the normal cost under three cost methods using different annuity, interest and inflation assumptions. Then we make comparisons between cost methods as well as between assumption changes. Serre's conjecture on the modularity of Galois representations makes a connection between two-dimensional Galois representations and modular forms. A conjecture by Ash, Doud, and Pollack generalizes Serre's to higher-dimensional Galois representations. In this paper we discuss an explicit computational example supporting the generalized claim. An ambiguity in a calculation within the example is resolved using a method of complex approximation.

We derive an expression for the commutator of functions of operators with constant commutations relations in terms of the partial derivatives of these functions. This result extends the well-known commutation relation between one operator and a function of another operator. Phishing attacks are spam e-mails that attempt to fool recipients into divulging their identifying information by posing as a message from a well known company and using that company's branding and logos. It is estimated that phishing attacks have cost bank and credit card customers $1.2 billion in the U.S. in 2003. Previous work, content-triggered trust negotiation (CTTN), filters Internet traffic for sensitive data, and prevents a user from disclosing sensitive information to an un-trusted server. We present a new method for generating large numbers of accurate point correspondences between two wide baseline images. This is important for structure-from-motion algorithms, which rely on many correct matches to reduce error in the derived geometric structure. Given a small initial correspondence set we iteratively expand the set with nearby points exhibiting strong affine correlation, and then we constrain the set to an epipolar geometry using RANSAC. We present a new constraint-based implicit active contour, which shares desirable properties of both parametric and implicit active contours. Like parametric approaches, their representation is compact and can be manipulated interactively. Like other implicit approaches, they can naturally adapt to non-simple topologies. Unlike implicit approaches using level-set methods, representation of the contour does not require a dense mesh. Instead, it is based on specified on-curve and off-curve constraints, which are interpolated using radial basis functions. Current ad hoc multicast routing protocols have been designed to build and maintain a tree or mesh in the face of a mobile environment, with fast reaction to network changes in order to minimize packet loss. However, the performance of these protocols has not been adequately examined under realistic scenarios. Existing performance studies generally use a single, simple mobility model, with low density and often very low traffic rates. Several recent studies that have proposed MUSIC models for gibbsite surfaces have purported to achieve a very good fit with potentiometric titration data. However, in order to achieve such results, several significant parameters, such as the number of surface sites, site densities, and pKa values were sometimes re-introduced in the model as fitted parameters, and physically unrealistic modeling assumptions were sometimes used. Composite sampling can be more cost effective than simple random sampling. This paper considers how to determine the optimum number of increments to use in composite sampling. Composite sampling terminology and theory are outlined and a model is developed which accounts for different sources of variation in compositing and data analysis. This model is used to define and understand the process of determining the optimum number of increments that should be used in forming a composite. There are four distinguishable groundwater systems in the Boise area, Idaho, U.S.A., identified as modern batholith, thermal batholith, Boise frontal fault, and Nampa-Caldwell systems (Figure 1). Modern batholith and thermal batholith groundwaters are located in Tertiary to Cretaceous aged granites and granodiorites of the Atlanta lobe of the Idaho Batholith. The frontal fault system near Boise, ID defines the southeastern edge of the Idaho Batholith, and divides the batholith from the western Snake River Plain. The Nampa-Caldwell system is in the volcanic, fluvial and pluvial sediments of the western Snake River Plain. Groundwater ages for these systems are modern, 5-15 …

In this paper we explore bifurcations, in particular the Hopf bifurcation. We study this especially in connection with the Brusselator, which is a model of certain chemical reaction-diffusion systems. After a thorough exploration of what a bifurcation is and what classifications there are, we give graphic representations of an occurring Hopf bifurcation in the Brusselator. When an additional forcing term is added, behavior changes dramatically. This includes the introduction of a horseshoe in the time map as well as a strange attractor in the system.

The geology along the southern flank of the Uinta Mountains, located north of Vernal, Utah, has been mapped at the 7.5' scale within two quadrangles: the Dry Fork and Steinaker Reservoir Quadrangles. Ambiguities dealing with stratigraphy, structural geology, and geohazards are currently being addressed as a result of this and other mapping projects in the vicinity. The geologic units in the area range in age from Mississippian to Late Cretaceous and include Uinta-sourced Tertiary units. We present new geochronologic magnetostratigraphy, fission-track and 40Ar/39Ar radioisotopic dates, biostratigraphy)bdata constraining the age of three separate sequences and a composite section from Guanajuato, Mexico. Those data make this one of the most complete and precisely age-calibrated sequences in North America spanning the Hemphillian/Blancan North American Land Mammal “Age” (NALMA) boundary interval, and the data further constrain the timing and pattern of the Great American Biotic Interchange (GABI). In total, 196 samples (77 sites) were used to construct the magnetic polarity stratigraphies, with eight fission-track analyses and four new 40Ar/39Ar radioisotopic dates.
