[O Iii] Profile Substructure In Radio-Quiet Quasars, C. Leipski, N. Bennert Mar 2006

[O Iii] Profile Substructure In Radio-Quiet Quasars, C. Leipski, N. Bennert

Physics

Interactions between the radio jet and the optical emission of the narrow-line region (NLR) are a well known phenomenon in Seyfert galaxies. Here, we present the study of possible jet-NLR interactions in five radio-quiet PG quasars with double or triple radio structure. High spatial and spectral resolution observations were carried out in the H-[O III] 5007 wavelength range. In all cases, there is evidence for [O III] profile substructure (shoulders, subpeaks, blueshifted "broad'' components) with different clarity. To measure the velocity, line width, intensity, and location of these [O III] components, several Gaussians were fitted. Often, the substructures are more …

Hadronization Geometry From Net-Charge Angular Correlations On Momentum Subspace (Η,Φ) In Au–Au Collisions At √Snn = 130 Gev, J. Adams, M.M. Aggarwal, Z. Ahammed, J. Amonett, B.D. Anderson, D. Physics

We present the first measurements of charge-dependent correlations on angular difference variables η1−η2 (pseudorapidity) and ϕ1−ϕ2 (azimuth) for primary charged hadrons with transverse momentum 0.15⩽pt⩽2 GeV/c and |η|⩽1.3 from Au–Au collisions at . We observe correlation structures not predicted by theory but consistent with evolution of hadron emission geometry with increasing centrality from one-dimensional fragmentation of color strings along the beam direction to an at least two-dimensional hadronization geometry along the beam and azimuth directions of a hadron-opaque bulk medium.

Analysis Of Compost Treatments To Establish Shrubs And Improve Water Quality, Brent G. Hallock, Anne Power, Steve Rein, Michael Curto, Misty Scharff Feb 2006

Analysis Of Compost Treatments To Establish Shrubs And Improve Water Quality, Brent G. Hallock, Anne Power, Steve Rein, Michael Curto, Misty Scharff

Earth and Soil Sciences

Utilization of compost as an erosion control tool is gaining momentum for many reasons. Compost offers excellent surface protection for reducing topsoil loss while providing a favorable substrate for hydroseed mixes. Soil moisture is retained and nutrients for vegetation are provided, meanwhile inhibiting undesirable plant species. However, there is wide variation in available compost sources and cost. Possible interactions between compost composition, soil type and vegetation production may occur. Hence, an experiment aimed to determine whether there is a noticeable difference in erosion control and seedling germination performance between several common types of compost applied at varying rates and methods …

Support For Xml Markup Of Image-Based Electronic Editions, Alex Dekhtyar, Ionut E. Iacob, Jerzy W. Jaromczyk, Kevin Kiernan, Neil Moore, Dorothy Carr Porter

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Image-based electronic editions enable researchers to view and study in an electronic environment historical manuscript images intricately linked to edition, transcript, glossary and apparatus files. Building image-based electronic editions poses a two-fold challenge. For humanities scholars, it is important to be able to use image and text to successfully encode the desired features of the manuscripts. Computer Scientists must find mechanisms for representing markup in its association both with the images, text and other auxiliary files and for making the representation available for efficient querying. This paper addresses the architecture of one such solution, that uses efficient data structures to …

Precise Radial Velocities Of Giant Stars. I. Stable Stars, S. Hekker, S. Reffert, A. Quirrenbach, D. S. Mitchell, D. A. Fischer, G. W. Marcy, R. P. Butler Feb 2006

Precise Radial Velocities Of Giant Stars. I. Stable Stars, S. Hekker, S. Reffert, A. Quirrenbach, D. S. Mitchell, D. A. Fischer, G. W. Marcy, R. P. Butler

Physics

Context. Future astrometric missions such as SIM PlanetQuest need very stable reference stars. K giants have large luminosities, which place them at large distances and thus the jitter of their photocenters by companions is relatively small. Therefore K giants would be best suited as references. To confirm this observationally a radial velocity survey is performed to quantify the level of intrinsic variability in K giants.

Aims. From this radial velocity survey we present 34 K giants with an observed standard deviation of the radial velocity of less than 20 m/s. These stars are considered “stable” and can be used as …

Size And Properties Of The Nlr In The Seyfert-2 Galaxy Ngc1386, N. Bennert, B. Jungwiert, S. Komossa Feb 2006

Size And Properties Of The Nlr In The Seyfert-2 Galaxy Ngc1386, N. Bennert, B. Jungwiert, S. Komossa

Physics

We study the narrow-line region (NLR) of the Seyfert-2 galaxy NGC 1386 by means of long-slit spectroscopy obtained with FORS1 at the VLT. We use the galaxy itself for subtracting the stellar template, applying reddening corrections to fit the stellar template to the spectra of the NLR. The continuum gets steadily redder towards the nucleus. The spatial distribution of the reddening derived from the Balmer decrement differs from the continuum reddening, indicating dust within the NLR with a varying column density along the line of sight. Using spatially resolved spectral diagnostics, we find a transition between central line ratios falling …

Optical Dipole Traps For Cold Atoms Using Diffracted Laser Light, Glen D. Gillen, Shekhar Guha, Katharina Christandl Jan 2006

Optical Dipole Traps For Cold Atoms Using Diffracted Laser Light, Glen D. Gillen, Shekhar Guha, Katharina Christandl

Physics

We theoretically investigate the feasibility of using intensity distributions of light of a single laser beam diffracted by a circular aperture as optical dipole traps for cold neutral atoms. Localized and cylindrically symmetric traps on the central axis of the circular aperture exist for both blue- and red-detuned laser light. Experimental mapping of the spots of interest using CO2 laser light demonstrates the existence of these light distributions for laboratory conditions and their agreement with theoretical predictions.

Energetically Optimal Travel Across Terrain: Visualizations And A New Metric Of Geographic Distance With Archaeological Applications, Brian M. Wood, Zoë J. Wood Jan 2006

Energetically Optimal Travel Across Terrain: Visualizations And A New Metric Of Geographic Distance With Archaeological Applications, Brian M. Wood, Zoë J. Wood

Computer Science and Software Engineering

We present a visualization and computation tool for modeling the caloric cost of pedestrian travel across three dimensional terrains. This tool is being used in ongoing archaeological research that analyzes how costs of locomotion affect the spatial distribution of trails and artifacts across archaeological landscapes. Throughout human history, traveling by foot has been the most common form of transportation, and therefore analyses of pedestrian travel costs are important for understanding prehistoric patterns of resource acquisition, migration, trade, and political interaction. Traditionally, archaeologists have measured geographic proximity based on "as the crow flies" distance. We propose new methods for terrain visualization …

Existence Of Optimal Controls For Singular Control Problems With State Constraints, Amarjit Budhiraja, Kevin Ross Jan 2006

Existence Of Optimal Controls For Singular Control Problems With State Constraints, Amarjit Budhiraja, Kevin Ross

Statistics

We establish the existence of an optimal control for a general class of singular control problems with state constraints. The proof uses weak convergence arguments and a time rescaling technique. The existence of optimal controls for Brownian control problems, associated with a broad family of stochastic networks, follows as a consequence.

Management Strategies In The Wildland-Urban Interface Of Southern California And Their Effect On Fire Behavior And Environmental Impacts, Christopher Dicus Jan 2006

Management Strategies In The Wildland-Urban Interface Of Southern California And Their Effect On Fire Behavior And Environmental Impacts, Christopher Dicus

Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences

This paper discusses varying management strategies in wildland-urban interface communities of southern California in terms of their effects on potential fire behavior and residual environmental impacts. A century of fire exclusion policies there and throughout the United States has led to immense fuel loading and declining ecosystem health, which coupled with a burgeoning population relocating to wildland areas, has annually heightened the threat of devastating wildfires. Successful management strategies must consider elements of suppression needs, community education, construction and development standards, and vegetation manipulation, each of which will vary dependant on the ecosystem and socioeconomic conditions of the area considered. …

Effects Of Lop And Scatter Slash Treatment On Potential Fire Behavior And Soil Erosion Following A Selection Harvest In A Coast Redwood Forest, Kyle W. Jacobson, Christopher Dicus Jan 2006

Effects Of Lop And Scatter Slash Treatment On Potential Fire Behavior And Soil Erosion Following A Selection Harvest In A Coast Redwood Forest, Kyle W. Jacobson, Christopher Dicus

Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences

Even though harvesting timber is one method of reducing fuel continuity and subsequent potential fire behavior, the residual slash can greatly increase the surface fuel loading and subsequent risk of wildfire on harvested sites. Fire behavior following silvicultural treatments to a stand can vary greatly, with both depth and loading playing a significant role (Nives 1989). Surface fuels and subsequent potential fire behavior has been shown to increase in the first year after harvest in coast redwood forests (Sequoia sempervirens (D. Don) Endl.) (Dicus 2003), which threatens not only natural resources but also structures in an ever-increasing wildland-urban interface. Alternatively, …

Effects Of Fuel Loading On Potential Fire Behavior And Soil Erosion In Coast Redwood Stands, Eric Just, Christopher Dicus Jan 2006

Effects Of Fuel Loading On Potential Fire Behavior And Soil Erosion In Coast Redwood Stands, Eric Just, Christopher Dicus

Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences

Commercial timber harvesting typically reduces aerial fuel loading and continuity, but can actually heighten fire activity through increased surface fuel loading (Agee 1997). Fuel depth and loading, which typically increase after harvest, play a significant role in fire intensity and rate of spread in redwood forests (Sequoia sempervirens) (D. Don.) Endl.) (Nives 1989), which are significant predictors of redwood mortality (Finney and Martin 1993). However, residual slash fuels may simultaneously reduce erosion, which may be of greater importance in some areas because they intercept rainfall and soil particles dispersed by overland flow (Fernandez et al. 2004). The relationship of surface …

On The Existence Of Infinitely Many Closed Geodesics On Orbifolds Of Revolution, Joseph Borzellino, Christopher R. Jordan-Squire, Gregory C. Petrics, D. Mark Sullivan Jan 2006

On The Existence Of Infinitely Many Closed Geodesics On Orbifolds Of Revolution, Joseph Borzellino, Christopher R. Jordan-Squire, Gregory C. Petrics, D. Mark Sullivan

Mathematics

Using the theory of geodesics on surfaces of revolution, we introduce the period function. We use this as our main tool in showing that any two-dimensional orbifold of revolution homeomorphic to S2 must contain an infinite number of geometrically distinct closed geodesics. Since any such orbifold of revolution can be regarded as a topological two-sphere with metric singularities, we will have extended Bangert’s theorem on the existence of infinitely many closed geodesics on any smooth Riemannian two-sphere. In addition, we give an example of a two-sphere cone-manifold of revolution which possesses a single closed geodesic, thus showing that Bangert’s result …

An Empirical Evaluation Of The Impact Of Test-Driven Development On Software Quality, David S. Janzen Jan 2006

An Empirical Evaluation Of The Impact Of Test-Driven Development On Software Quality, David S. Janzen

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Test-driven development (TDD) has gained recent attention with the popularity of the Extreme Programming agile software development methodology. Advocates of TDD rely primarily on anecdotal evidence with relatively little empirical evidence of the benefits of the practice. This research is the first comprehensive evaluation of how TDD affects software architecture and internal design quality. Formal controlled experiments were conducted in undergraduate and graduate academic courses, in a professional training course, and with in-house professional development projects in a Fortune 500 company. The experiments involved over 230 student and professional programmers working on almost five hundred software projects ranging in size …

Advancing Candidate Link Generation For Requirements Tracing: The Study Of Methods, Jane Huffman Hayes, Alex Dekhtyar, Senthil Karthikeyan Sundaram

Computer Science and Software Engineering

This paper addresses the issues related to improving the overall quality of the dynamic candidate link generation for the requirements tracing process for verification and validation and independent verification and validation analysts. The contribution of the paper is four-fold: we define goals for a tracing tool based on analyst responsibilities in the tracing process, we introduce several new measures for validating that the goals have been satisfied, we implement analyst feedback in the tracing process, and we present a prototype tool that we built, RETRO (REquirements TRacing On-target), to address these goals. We also present the results of a study …

Physics

In the last 10 years bolometers have become extremely powerful detectors in the search for rare events, due to their very good resolution. Cuoricino, a 62 bolometer array, in the first months of activity reached a resolution (average in all detectors) in the energy region of interest (2528 keV) of 7 keV and a limit on the tn1/2 of the process of 7.5·10n23y. Cuoricino’s 62 detectors constitute the biggest number of macrobolometers (790 g each) ever cooled and demonstrate the feasibility of large arrays of bolometers. Following the indication of Cuoricino in CUORE R&D a new detector …

Probabilistic Road Map Sampling Strategies For Multi-Robot Motion Planning, Christopher M. Clark Dec 2005

Probabilistic Road Map Sampling Strategies For Multi-Robot Motion Planning, Christopher M. Clark

Computer Science and Software Engineering

This paper presents a Probabilistic Road Map (PRM) motion planning algorithm to be queried within Dynamic Robot Networks—a multi-robot coordination platform for robots operating with limited sensing and inter-robot communication. First, the Dynamic Robot Networks (DRN) coordination platform is introduced that facilitates centralized robot coordination across ad hoc networks, allowing safe navigation in dynamic, unknown environments. As robots move about their environment, they dynamically form communication networks. Within these networks, robots can share local sensing information and coordinate the actions of all robots in the network. Second, a fast single-query Probabilistic Road Map (PRM) to be called within the DRN …

Existence And Uniqueness Of V-Asymptotic Expansions And Colombeau’S Generalized Numbers, Todor D. Todorov Dec 2005

Existence And Uniqueness Of V-Asymptotic Expansions And Colombeau’S Generalized Numbers, Todor D. Todorov

Mathematics

We define a type of generalized asymptotic series called v-asymptotic. We show that every function with moderate growth at infinity has a v-asymptotic expansion. We also describe the set of v-asymptotic series, where a given function with moderate growth has a unique v-asymptotic expansion. As an application to random matrix theory we calculate the coefficients and establish the uniqueness of the v-asymptotic expansion of an integral with a large parameter. As another application (with significance in the non-linear theory of generalized functions) we show that every Colombeau’s generalized number has a v-asymptotic expansion. A similar …

A Framework For Management Of Semistructured Probabilistic Data, Wenzhong Zhao, Alex Dekhtyar, Judy Goldsmith

Computer Science and Software Engineering

This paper describes the theoretical framework and implementation of a database management system for storing and manipulating diverse probability distributions of discrete random variables with finite domains, and associated information. A formal Semistructured Probabilistic Object (SPO) data model and a Semistructured Probabilistic Query Algebra (SP-algebra) are proposed. The SP-algebra supports standard database queries as well as some specific to probabilities, such as conditionalization and marginalization. Thus, the Semistructured Probabilistic Database may be used as a backend to any application that involves the management of large quantities of probabilistic information, such as building stochastic models. The implementation uses XML encoding of …

Earth and Soil Sciences

Lead can pose a significant risk to environmental quality at and around shooting ranges due to its use in bullets and shot. The concentrations of Pb in soils, plants and surficial waters from a shooting range were determined in this study. Soil and plant samples were analyzed for total Pb (US EPA method 3050a) to determine the extent of Pb contamination. The toxicity characteristic leach procedure (TCLP; US EPA method 1311) was followed to ascertain bioavailable Pb. Soil samples ranged from 14.71 to 6346.15 mg Pb kg-1 soil with an average value of 1157.43 (±2000.57) mg Pb kg-1 soil across …

Improving After-The-Fact Tracing And Mapping: Supporting Software Quality Predictions, Jane Huffman Hayes, Alex Dekhtyar, Senthil Sundaram

Computer Science and Software Engineering

The software engineering industry undertakes many activities that require generating and using mappings. Companies develop knowledge bases to capture corporate expertise and possibly proprietary information. Software developers build traceability matrices to demonstrate that their designs satisfy the requirements. Proposal managers map customers' statements of work to individual sections of companies' proposals to prove compliance. Systems engineers authoring interface specifications record design rationales as they make relevant decisions. We developed an approach to tracing and mapping that aims to use fully automated information retrieval techniques, and we implemented our approach in a tool called RETRO (requirements tracing on target).

The Archway Project: Architecture For Research In Computing For Humanities Through Research, Teaching, And Learning, Kevin Kiernan, Jerzy W. Jaromczyk, Alex Dekhtyar, Dorothy Carr Porter, Kenneth Hawley, Sandeep Bodapati, Ionut E. Iacob

Computer Science and Software Engineering

An unusual alliance called the ARCHway Project is developing an Edition Production Technology (EPT), a technological infrastructure for collaborative research, teaching, and learning between computer scientists and specialists in Old English. Our goal is to identify and solve problems of mutual importance in building image-based electronic editions of significant cultural materials. The EPT will allow us to implement and integrate both new and already available software applications, to construct a digital library of previously unedited Old English manuscripts as a testbed for our solutions, and to distribute the digital library to the public. This paper introduces some of the tools …

Humans In The Traceability Loop: Can’T Live With ’Em, Can’T Live Without ’Em, Jane Huffman Hayes, Alex Dekhtyar

Computer Science and Software Engineering

The human analyst is required as an active participant in the traceability process. Work to date has focused on automated methods that generate traceability information. There is a need for study of what the analysts do with traceability information as well as a study of how they make decisions.

On Improving Local Website Search Using Web Server Traffic Logs: A Preliminary Report, Qing Cui, Alex Dekhtyar

Computer Science and Software Engineering

In this paper we give a preliminary report on our study of the use of web server traffic logs to improve local search. Web server traffic logs are, typically, private to individual websites and as such – are unavailable to traditional web search engines conducting searches across multiple web sites. However, they can be used to augment search performed by a local search engine, restricted to a single site. Web server traffic logs, which we will refer to as simply logs throughout this paper, contain information on traffic patterns on a web site. By using this information, instead of pure …

Performance Of Binary-Encounter-Bethe (Beb) Theory For Electron-Impact Ionization Cross Sections Of Molecules Containing Heavy Elements (Z > 10), Gregory E. Scott, Karl K. Irikura Nov 2005

Performance Of Binary-Encounter-Bethe (Beb) Theory For Electron-Impact Ionization Cross Sections Of Molecules Containing Heavy Elements (Z > 10), Gregory E. Scott, Karl K. Irikura

Chemistry and Biochemistry

The binary-encounter-Bethe (BEB) theory developed by Kim and coworkers has been successful for computing electron-impact ionization cross sections of many molecules. However, some recent publications have stated that BEB theory performs poorly for molecules that contain heavier elements such as chlorine and sulfur. We have found that the BEB calculations in those publications were performed incorrectly. When performed correctly, BEB predictions are as good for heavy-element molecules as for light-element molecules. We recommended recently that an alternative, less-confusing procedure be used for molecules that contain heavier elements. The alternative procedure, based upon effective core potentials (ECPs), does not require explicit …

We present results for two-particle transverse momentum correlations, ⟨Δpt,iΔpt,j⟩, as a function of event centrality for Au+Au collisions at √sNN=20, 62, 130, and 200 GeV at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. We observe correlations decreasing with centrality that are similar at all four incident energies. The correlations multiplied by the multiplicity density increase with incident energy, and the centrality dependence may show evidence of processes such as thermalization, jet production, or the saturation of transverse flow. The square root of the correlations divided by the event-wise average transverse momentum per event shows little …
