Physics

Cuoricino is a taking data bolometric experiment searching for neutrinoless double beta decay (0νDBD) of 130Te. The detector consists of an array of large cubic TeO2 crystal bolometers. Cuoricino works at about 10 mK in the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory. Good energy resolutions were obtained (2.1 keV at 911 keV and 3.9 keV at 2615 keV at best). The counting rate in the region of 0νDBD is 0.18±0.02 c/keV/kg/y. The limit for the 0νDBD half lifetime is 2.0 × 1024 years at the 90% of C.L. This results correspond to a limit for the effective neutrino mass …

Charged hadrons in 0.15⊥<4  GeV/c associated with particles of ptrig>4  GeV/c are reconstructed in pp and Au+Au collisions at √sNN=200  GeV. The associated multiplicity and p⊥magnitude sum are found to increase from pp to central Au+Au collisions. The associated pdistributions, while similar in shape on the nearside, are significantly softened on the awayside in central Au+Au relative to pp and not much harder than that of inclusive hadrons. The results, consistent with jet quenching, suggest that the awayside fragments approach equilibration with the medium traversed.

Regularity Of Digits And Significant Digits Of Random Variables, Theodore P. Hill, Klaus Schürger Oct 2005

Regularity Of Digits And Significant Digits Of Random Variables, Theodore P. Hill, Klaus Schürger

Research Scholars in Residence

A random variable X is digit-regular (respectively, significant-digit-regular) if the probability that every block of k given consecutive digits (significant digits) appears in the b-adic expansion of X approaches b-k as the block moves to the right, for all integers b>1 and k≥1. Necessary and sufficient conditions are established, in terms of convergence of Fourier coefficients, and in terms of convergence in distribution modulo 1, for a random variable to be digit-regular (significant-digit-regular), and basic relationships between digit-regularity and various classical classes of probability measures and normal numbers are given. These results provide a theoretical basis for analyses …

A Framework For Comparing Requirements Tracing Experiments, Jane Huffman Hayes, Alex Dekhtyar Oct 2005

A Framework For Comparing Requirements Tracing Experiments, Jane Huffman Hayes, Alex Dekhtyar

Computer Science and Software Engineering

The building of traceability matrices by those other than the original developers is an arduous, error prone, prolonged, and labor intensive task. Thus, after-the-fact requirements tracing is a process where the right kind of automation can definitely assist an analyst. Recently, a number of researchers have studied the application of various methods, often based on information retrieval after-the-fact tracing. The studies are diverse enough to warrant a means for comparing them easily as well as for determining areas that require further investigation. To that end, we present here an experimental framework for evaluating requirements tracing and traceability studies. Common methods, …

Light Distributions In Front Of A Circular Aperture, Evaluated Using Vector Diffraction Theory, Shekhar Guha, Glen D. Gillen

Physics

For a plane wave (having wavelength λ) incident on a circular aperture (radius a), the transverse distribution of light intensity beyond the aperture is expressed in terms of a dimensionless parameter, p1=a/λ, for various distances close to the aperture, using the vector Rayleigh-Sommerfeld diffraction theory.

Continuations From Generalized Stack Inspection, Greg Pettyjohn, John Clements, Joe Marshall, Shriram Krishnamurthi, Matthias Felleisen Sep 2005

Continuations From Generalized Stack Inspection, Greg Pettyjohn, John Clements, Joe Marshall, Shriram Krishnamurthi, Matthias Felleisen

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Implementing first-class continuations can pose a challenge if the target machine makes no provisions for accessing and re-installing the run-time stack. In this paper, we present a novel translation that overcomes this problem. In the first half of the paper, we introduce a theoretical model that shows how to eliminate the capture and the use of first-class continuations in the presence of a generalized stack inspection mechanism. The second half of the paper explains how to translate this model into practice in two different contexts. First, we reformulate the servlet interaction language in the PLT Web server, which heavily relies …

Laziness Without All The Hard Work: Combining Lazy And Strict Languages For Teaching, Eli Barzilay, John Clements Sep 2005

Laziness Without All The Hard Work: Combining Lazy And Strict Languages For Teaching, Eli Barzilay, John Clements

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Students have trouble understanding the difference between lazy and strict programming. It is difficult to compare the two directly, because popular strict languages and popular lazy languages differ in their syntax, in their type systems, and in other ways unrelated to the lazy/strict evaluation discipline. While teaching programming languages courses, we have discovered that an extension to PLT Scheme allows the system to accommodate both lazy and strict evaluation in the same system. Moreover, the extension is simple and transparent. Finally, the simple nature of the extension means that the resulting system provides a rich environment for both lazy and …

Multistrange Baryon Elliptic Flow In Au+Au Collisions At √SNn=200 Gev, Star Collaboration, T.D. Gutierrez Sep 2005

Multistrange Baryon Elliptic Flow In Au+Au Collisions At √SNn=200 Gev, Star Collaboration, T.D. Gutierrez

Physics

We report on the first measurement of elliptic flow ν2(pT) of multistrange baryons Ξ+ and Ω+ in heavy-ion collisions. In minimum-bias Au+Au collisions at √sNN=200  GeV, a significant amount of elliptic flow, comparable to other nonstrange baryons, is observed for multistrange baryons which are expected to be particularly sensitive to the dynamics of the partonic stage of heavy-ion collisions. The pT dependence of ν2 of the multistrange baryons confirms the number of constituent quark scaling previously observed for lighter hadrons. These results support the idea that …

Tracing Requirements To Defect Reports: An Application Of Information Retrieval Techniques, Suresh Yadla, Jane Huffman Hayes, Alex Dekhtyar Sep 2005

Tracing Requirements To Defect Reports: An Application Of Information Retrieval Techniques, Suresh Yadla, Jane Huffman Hayes, Alex Dekhtyar

Computer Science and Software Engineering

To support debugging, maintenance, verification and validation (V&V) and/or independent V&V (IV&V), it is necessary to understand the relationship between defect reports and their related artifacts. For example, one cannot correct a code-related defect report without being able to find the code that is affected. Information retrieval (IR) techniques have been used effectively to trace textual artifacts to each other. This has generally been applied to the problem of dynamically generating a trace between artifacts in the software document hierarchy after the fact (after development has proceeded to at least the next lifecycle phase). The same techniques can also be …

Revisiting The Semantics Of Interval Probabilistic Logic Programs, Alex Dekhtyar, Michael I. Dekhtyar Sep 2005

Revisiting The Semantics Of Interval Probabilistic Logic Programs, Alex Dekhtyar, Michael I. Dekhtyar

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Two approaches to logic programming with probabilities emerged over time: bayesian reasoning and probabilistic satisfiability (PSAT). The attractiveness of the former is in tying the logic programming research to the body of work on Bayes networks. The second approach ties computationally reasoning about probabilities with linear programming, and allows for natural expression of imprecision in probabilities via the use of intervals.
In this paper we construct precise semantics for one PSAT-based formalism for reasoning with inteval probabilities, probabilistic logic programs (p-programs), orignally considered by Ng and Subrahmanian. We show that the probability ranges of atoms and formulas in p-programs cannot …

Physics

We review the most important experimental results from the first three years of nucleus–nucleus collision studies at RHIC, with emphasis on results from the STAR experiment, and we assess their interpretation and comparison to theory. The theory-experiment comparison suggests that central Au + Au collisions at RHIC produce dense, rapidly thermalizing matter characterized by: (1) initial energy densities above the critical values predicted by lattice QCD for establishment of a quark–gluon plasma (QGP); (2) nearly ideal fluid flow, marked by constituent interactions of very short mean free path, established most probably at a stage preceding hadron formation; and (3) opacity …

Multiplicity And Pseudorapidity Distributions Of Photons In Au+Au Collisions At √SNn=62.4 Gev, Star Collaboration, T.D. Gutierrez Aug 2005

Multiplicity And Pseudorapidity Distributions Of Photons In Au+Au Collisions At √SNn=62.4 Gev, Star Collaboration, T.D. Gutierrez

Physics

We present the first measurement of pseudorapidity distribution of photons in the region 2.3≤η≤3.7for different centralities in Au+Au collisions at √sNN=62.4  GeV. We find that the photon yield scales with the number of participating nucleons at all collision centralities studied. The pseudorapidity distribution of photons, dominated by π0 decays, has been compared to those of charged pions, photons, and inclusive charged particles from heavy-ion and nucleon-nucleon collisions at various energies. The photon production has been shown to be consistent with the energy and centrality independent limiting fragmentation scenario.

Automatic Source Attribution Of Text: A Neural Networks Approach, Foaad Khosmood, Franz J. Kurfess

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Recent advances in automatic authorship attribution have been promising. Relatively new techniques such as N-gram analysis have shown important improvements in accuracy [2]. Much of the work in this area does remain in the realm of statistics best suited for human assistance rather than autonomous attribution [6]. While there have been attempts at using neural networks in the area in the past, they have been extremely limited and problem-specific [7]. This paper addresses the latter points by demonstrating a practical and truly autonomous attribution process using neural networks. Furthermore, we use a word-frequency classification technique to demonstrate the feasibility of …

Searching Multi-Hierarchical Xml Documents: The Case Of Fragmentation, Alex Dekhtyar, Ionut E. Iacob, Srikanth Methuku

Computer Science and Software Engineering

To properly encode properties of textual documents using XML, multiple markup hierarchies must be used, often leading to conflicting markup in encodings. Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) Guidelines [1] recognize this problem and suggest a number of ways to incorporate multiple hierarchies in a single well-formed XML document. In this paper, we present a framework for processing XPath queries over multi-hierarchical XML documents represented using fragmentation, one of the TEI-suggested techniques. We define the semantics of XPath over DOM trees of fragmented XML, extend the path expression language to cover overlap in markup, and describe FragXPath, our implementation of the proposed …

Goods Movement Security: An Information Technology Problem, Jens G. Pohl

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

This paper discusses the security problems associated with the movement of goods across international in-land borders and at ocean ports. The author proposes an information technology solution approach that is based on the profiling of international shipments. The collection of data describing the end-to-end movement of a shipment from the initial acquisition transactions, throughout the various transshipment stages, to the final delivery, allows intelligent software to assist customs and homeland security officials to determine the risks associated with the shipment long before it reaches the inspection point. The technical basis and architecture of the SecureOrigins™ software system is described. Designed …

The Clearance Of Protein-Bound Solutes By Hemofiltration And Hemodiafiltration, Timothy W. Meyer, Jason L. Walther, Maria Enrica Pagtalunan, Andres W. Martinez, Ali Torkamani, Patrick D. Fong, Natalie S. Recht, Channing R. Robertson, Thomas H. Hostetter Aug 2005

The Clearance Of Protein-Bound Solutes By Hemofiltration And Hemodiafiltration, Timothy W. Meyer, Jason L. Walther, Maria Enrica Pagtalunan, Andres W. Martinez, Ali Torkamani, Patrick D. Fong, Natalie S. Recht, Channing R. Robertson, Thomas H. Hostetter

Chemistry and Biochemistry

Background. Hemofiltration in the form of continuous venovenous hemofiltration (CVVH) is increasingly used to treat acute renal failure. Compared to hemodialysis, hemofiltration provides high clearances for large solutes but its effect on protein-bound solutes has been largely ignored.

Methods. Standard clinical systems were used to remove test solutes from a reservoir containing artificial plasma. Clearances of the protein-bound solutes phenol red (CPR) and indican (CIN) were compared to clearances of urea (CUREA) during hemofiltration and hemodiafiltration. A mathematical model was developed to predict clearances from values for plasma flow Qp, …

Habits Of Magnetosome Crystals In Coccoid Magnetotactic Bacteria, Ulysses Lins, Martha R. Mccartney, Marcos Farina, Richard B. Frankel, Peter R. Buseck

Physics

High-resolution transmission electron microscopy and electron holography were used to study the habits of exceptionally large magnetite crystals in coccoid magnetotactic bacteria. In addition to the crystal habits, the crystallographic positioning of successive crystals in the magnetosome chain appears to be under strict biological control.

Physics

CUORE is a proposed experiment, already partially funded, to search for 0ν-DBD of 130Te using 988 TeO2 bolometers. It aims at reaching a sensitivity on the effective neutrino mass of the order of few tens of meV. The crucial parameter on which this expectation is based is background. Different strategies are under development to reduce as much as possible its value, among which the comprehension of CUORICINO background, a single CUORE tower running since 2003, plays an important role. Present results already achieved and studies that are underway are here presented and discussed.

Towards Gaussian Multi-Robot Slam For Underwater Robotics, Dave Kroetsch, Christopher M. Clark

Computer Science and Software Engineering

This paper presents initial steps towards developing autonomous navigation capabilities for cooperating underwater robots. Specifically, Simultaneous Localization and Mapping, or SLAM, capabilities are investigated for a group of micro vehicles each equipped with a single downward facing camera and an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU). To verify the approach, simulations of the multi-robot SLAM running in a 3D environment were conducted, where vehicles in close proximity of one another exchange maps to improve localization.

Structure And Development Of Pitch Canker Infected Monterey Pine Stands At Año Nuevo, California, Douglas D. Piirto, Sauli Valkonen

Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences

The sustainability of indigenous Monterey pine (Pinus radiata D. Don)at Ano Nuevo stands in the central coast of California was examined. The foremost management objective in these stands is to establish and maintain stand structures that ensure a sustainable presence of the species in terms of uneven-aged management. The major threats are the proliferation of shade-tolerant tree species and the pitch canker ( Fusarium circinatum) disease. The study was based on data from 17 systematically placed sample plots, measured once, in one stand with a very high degree of variation in stand structure and species composition. The results …

Physics

The results from the STAR Collaboration on directed flow (ν1), elliptic flow (ν2), and the fourth harmonic (ν4) in the anisotropic azimuthal distribution of particles from Au+Au collisions at √sNN=200GeV are summarized and compared with results from other experiments and theoretical models. Results for identified particles are presented and fit with a blast-wave model. Different anisotropic flow analysis methods are compared and nonflow effects are extracted from the data. For ν2, scaling with the number of constituent quarks and parton coalescence are discussed. For ν4, scaling with v …

Mathematics

We would like to solve the following problem: find a mathematical model formulating I) quantum entanglement, II) particle-wave duality, III) universal objects (ur-sub-Planck objects): to be defined in terms of direct or inverse limits (defined by universal mapping properties) giving microcosm behaviors of space-time so as to give the smooth macrocosm space-time, and IV) the “curved” space-time associated with particles with mass in microcosm consistent with the notion of a light cone in macrocosm. Problems I) and II) are treated in Kato G., Europhys. Lett., 68 (2004) 467. In this paper, we will focus on III) and IV). As …

Localization Of Multiple Robots With Simple Sensors, Mike Peasgood, Christopher M. Clark, John Mcphee

Computer Science and Software Engineering

This paper presents a distributed particle filter algorithm for localizing multiple mobile robots that are equipped only with low cost/low power sensors. This method is applicable to multi-micro robot systems, where size limitations restrict sensor selection (e.g. small infrared range finders). Localization of three robots in a known environment is conducted by combining measurements from a small number of simple range sensors with inter-robot distances obtained through an acoustic range finder system. The localization problem is formulated as estimating the global position and orientation of a single triangle, where corners of the triangle represent the positions of robots. The robot …
