Interactive Preferences And Decision-Theoretic Planning, Derek Williams, Kyle Bailey, Alex Dekhtyar, Judy Goldsmith, Beth Goldstein, Raphael Finkel, Joan Mazur

Computer Science and Software Engineering

We introduce a suite of interlinked software tools for eliciting preferences, doing decision-theoretic planning, and displaying the plans. The software allows a user to walk through possible trajectories, adjust preferences, and compare potential trajectories. This paper focuses on the elicitation process, the plan display, and interactions between the two.

Physics

We present the first large-acceptance measurement of event-wise mean transverse momentum ⟨pt⟩ fluctuations for Au-Au collisions at nucleon-nucleon center-of-momentum collision energy √sNN = 130 GeV. The observed nonstatistical ⟨pt⟩ fluctuations substantially exceed in magnitude fluctuations expected from the finite number of particles produced in a typical collision. The r.m.s. fractional width excess of the event-wise ⟨pt⟩ distribution is 13.7±0.1(stat) ±1.3(syst)% relative to a statistical reference, for the 15% most-central collisions and for charged hadrons within pseudorapidity range |η|c. The width excess varies smoothly but nonmonotonically with collision centrality and does not display rapid …

Elasticity, Fluctuations, And Vortex Pinning In Ferromagnetic Superconductors: A Columnar Elastic Glass, A. M. Ettouhami, Karl Saunders, Leo Radzihovsky, John Toner

Physics

We study the elasticity, fluctuations, and pinning of a putative spontaneous vortex solid in ferromagnetic superconductors. Using a rigorous thermodynamic argument, we show that in the idealized case of vanishing crystalline pinning anisotropy the long-wavelength tilt modulus of such a vortex solid vanishes identically, as guaranteed by the underlying rotational invariance. The vanishing of the tilt modulus means that, to lowest order, the associated tension elasticity is replaced by the softer, curvature elasticity. The effect of this is to make the spontaneous vortex solid qualitatively more susceptible to the disordering effects of thermal fluctuations and random pinning. We study these …

Pion, Kaon, Proton And Anti-Proton Transverse Momentum Distributions From P+P And D+Au Collisions At √SNn=200 Gev, Star Collaboration, T.D. Gutierrez

Physics

Identified mid-rapidity particle spectra of π±, K±, and p(p¯) from 200 GeV p+p and d+Au collisions are reported. A time-of-flight detector based on multi-gap resistive plate chamber technology is used for particle identification. The particle-species dependence of the Cronin effect is observed to be significantly smaller than that at lower energies. The ratio of the nuclear modification factor (Rd Au) between protons (p+p¯) and charged hadrons (h) in the transverse momentum range 1.2

Xtagger: A New Approach To Authoring Document-Centric Xml, Ionut E. Iacob, Alex Dekhtyar Jun 2005

Xtagger: A New Approach To Authoring Document-Centric Xml, Ionut E. Iacob, Alex Dekhtyar

Computer Science and Software Engineering

The process of authoring document-centric XML documents in humanities disciplines is very different from the approach espoused by the standard XML editing software with the data-centric view of XML. Where data-centric XML is generated by first describing a tree structure of the encoding and then providing the content for the leaf elements, document-centric encodings start with content which is then marked up. In the paper we describe our approach to authoring document-centric XML documents and the tool, xTagger, originally developed for this purpose within the Electronic Boethius project, otherwise enhanced within the ARCHway project, an interdisciplinary project devoted to development …

K(892)* Resonance Production In Au+Au And P+P Collisions At √SNn = 200 Gev, Star Collaboration, T.D. Gutierrez

Physics

The short-lived K(892) resonance provides an efficient tool to probe properties of the hot and dense medium produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. We report measurements of K in √sNN=200GeV Au+Au and p+p collisions reconstructed via its hadronic decay channels K(892)*0→Kπ and K(892)*±→K0Sπ± using the STAR detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The K*0 mass has been studied as a function of pT in minimum bias p+p and central Au+Au collisions. The K∗pT spectra for minimum bias p+pinteractions and for Au+Au collisions in different centralities are presented. The K∗/K yield ratios for all …

Concurrent Markup Hierarchies: A Computer Science Approach, Ionut E. Iacob, Alex Dekhtyar Jun 2005

Concurrent Markup Hierarchies: A Computer Science Approach, Ionut E. Iacob, Alex Dekhtyar

Computer Science and Software Engineering

It is known that text has not, in general, a regular structure. However, since its invention and despite to the fact that it represents hierarchical structures, XML has gained a lot of popularity among humanities researchers: XML is easy to use and it comes with a handful of free processing tools. A variety of solutions were proposed to represent overlapping structures in XML. More or less easy to maintain from the point of view of data management, none of these solutions provides full support for two of the most demanded processing tasks: querying and presentation (XSL-like transformation).

We propose a …

A Framework For Processing Complex Document-Centric Xml With Overlapping Structures, Ionut E. Iacob, Alex Dekhtyar Jun 2005

A Framework For Processing Complex Document-Centric Xml With Overlapping Structures, Ionut E. Iacob, Alex Dekhtyar

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Management of multihierarchical XML encodings has attracted attention of a number of researchers both in databases [8] and in humanities[10]. Encoding documents using multiple hierarchies can yield overlapping markup. Previously proposed solutions to management of document-centric XML with overlapping markup rely on the XML expertise of humans and their ability to maintain correct schemas for complex markup languages.

We demonstrate a unified solution for management of complex, multihierarchical document-centric XML. Our framework includes software for storing, parsing, in-memory access, editing and querying, multihierarchical XML documents with conflicting structures.

Processing Xml Documents With Overlapping Hierarchies, Ionut E. Iacob, Alex Dekhtyar Jun 2005

Processing Xml Documents With Overlapping Hierarchies, Ionut E. Iacob, Alex Dekhtyar

Computer Science and Software Engineering

The problem of overlapping markup hierarchies, first mentioned in the context of SGML, often occurs in XML text encoding applications for humanities. Previous solutions to the problem rely on manual maintenance of the markup and address only the problem of representing overlapping features in XML, leaving the issues of automated maintenance and querying open. As a consequence, traditional XML tools are of little practical use when dealing with overlapping markup. In this work we demonstrate the implementation of our framework for management of concurrent XML hierarchies from a computer science perspective. We propose an underlying model, data structures, APIs, and …

Physics

We present results of our survey for planetary transits in the field of NGC 6940. We think nearly all of our observed stars are field stars. We have obtained high precision (∼3–10 mmag at the bright end) photometric observations of ∼50 000 stars spanning 18 nights in an attempt to identify low-amplitude and short-period transit events. We have used a matched filter analysis to identify 14 stars that show multiple events and four stars that show single transits. Of these 18 candidates, we have identified two that should be further researched. However, none of the candidates is a convincing hot …

Klystron Linearizer For Use With 1.2 Mw 476 Mhz Klystrons In Pep-Ii Rf Systems, J. Fox, T. Mastorides, D. Teytelman, D. Van Winkle, Y. Zhou May 2005

Klystron Linearizer For Use With 1.2 Mw 476 Mhz Klystrons In Pep-Ii Rf Systems, J. Fox, T. Mastorides, D. Teytelman, D. Van Winkle, Y. Zhou

Physics

The direct and comb loop feedback around the RF cavities in PEP-II is critical in reducing longitudinal instabilities driven by the cavity impedance. The non-linear 1.2 MW klystron is in the signal path for these feedback loops. As a result, the effective small-signal gain of the klystron at 85% saturation reduces the impedance control by factors of 5 to 20 as compared to a linear power amplifier. A klystron linearizer circuit has been developed which operates in series with the power amplifier and acts to equalize the small and large signal gains through the combination. The technique must implement a …

Computer Science and Software Engineering

We summarize the results of our requirements tracing work to date, focusing on our empirical results with open source datasets. Specifically, we describe the problem of after-the-fact requirements tracing for Verification and Validation (V&V) analysts, we provide a brief overview of Information Retrieval methods we have applied as well as measures used to evaluate them, we describe our tracing tool, and we present the results of a number of empirical studies. Two of the open source datasets that we have used are available to the research community at http://promise.site.uottawa.ca/SERepository/.

Physics

We present first measurements of the pseudorapidity and azimuth (η, ϕ) binsize dependence of event-wise mean transverse-momentum ⟨pt⟩ fluctuations for Au–Au collisions at √sNN = 200 GeV. We invert that dependence to obtain pt autocorrelations on differences (η, ϕ) interpreted to represent velocity/temperature distributions on (η, ϕ). The general form of the autocorrelations suggests that the basic correlation mechanism is parton fragmentation. The autocorrelations vary rapidly with collision centrality, which suggests that fragmentation is strongly modified by a dissipative medium in the more central Au–Au collisions relative to peripheral or p–p collisions.

Text Mining For Software Engineering: How Analyst Feedback Impacts Final Results, Jane Huffman Hayes, Alex Dekhtyar, Senthil Sundaram

Computer Science and Software Engineering

The mining of textual artifacts is requisite for many important activities in software engineering: tracing of requirements; retrieval of components from a repository; location of manpage text for an area of question, etc. Many such activities leave the “final word” to the analyst – have the relevant items been retrieved? are there other items that should have been retrieved? When analysts become a part of the text mining process, their decisions on the relevance of retrieved elements impact the final outcome of the activity. In this paper, we undertook a pilot study to examine the impact of analyst decisions on …

A Direct Comparison Of Conceptual Learning And Problem Solving Ability In Traditional And Studio Style Classrooms, Chance Hoellwarth, Matthew J. Moelter, Randall D. Knight

Physics

We present data on student performance on conceptual understanding and on quantitative problem-solving ability in introductory mechanics in both studio and traditional classroom modes. The conceptual measures used were the Force Concept Inventory and the Force and Motion Conceptual Evaluation. Quantitative problem-solving ability was measured with standard questions on the final exam. Our data compare three different quarters over the course of 2 years. In all three quarters, the normalized learning gain in conceptual understanding was significantly larger for students in the studio sections. At the same time, students in the studio sections performed the same or slightly worse on …

Biomolecule Detection Via Target Mediated Nanoparticle Aggregation And Dielectrophoretic Impedance Measurement, Philip J. Costanzo, Enzhu Liang, Timothy E. Patten, Scott D. Collins, Rosemary L. Smith

Chemistry and Biochemistry

A new biosensing system is described that is based on the aggregation of nanoparticles by a target biological molecule and dielectrophoretic impedance measurement of these aggregates. The aggregation process was verified within a microchannel via fluorescence microscopy, demonstrating that this process can be used in a real time sensor application. Positive dielectrophoresis is employed to capture the nanoparticle aggregates at the edge of thin film electrodes, where their presence is detected either by optical imaging via fluorescence microscopy or by measuring the change in electrical impedance between adjacent electrodes. The electrical detection mechanism demonstrates the potential for this method as …

Pion Interferometry In Au+Au Collisions At √SNn = 200 Gev, Star Collaboration, T.D. Gutierrez Apr 2005

Pion Interferometry In Au+Au Collisions At √SNn = 200 Gev, Star Collaboration, T.D. Gutierrez

Physics

We present a systematic analysis of two-pion interferometry in Au+Au collisions at √sNN=200GeV using the STAR detector at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. We extract the Hanbury-Brown and Twiss radii and study their multiplicity, transverse momentum, and azimuthal angle dependence. The Gaussianness of the correlation function is studied. Estimates of the geometrical and dynamical structure of the freeze-out source are extracted by fits with blast-wave parametrizations. The expansion of the source and its relation with the initial energy density distribution is studied.

Φ Meson Production In Au+Au And P+P Collisions At Snn=200gev, Star Collaboration, T.D. Gutierrez Apr 2005

Φ Meson Production In Au+Au And P+P Collisions At Snn=200gev, Star Collaboration, T.D. Gutierrez

Physics

We report the STAR measurement of ϕ meson production in Au+Au and p+p collisions at sNN=200GeV. Using the event mixing technique, the ϕ spectra and yields are obtained at mid-rapidity for five centrality bins in Au+Au collisions and for non-singly-diffractive p+pcollisions. It is found that the ϕ transverse momentum distributions from Au+Au collisions are better fitted with a single-exponential while the p+p spectrum is better described by a double-exponential distribution. The measured nuclear modification factors indicate that ϕproduction in central Au+Au collisions is suppressed relative to peripheral collisions when scaled by the number of binary collisions (〈Nbin〉). The systematics …

Software Architecture Improvement Through Test-Driven Development: An Empirical Study, David S. Janzen Apr 2005

Software Architecture Improvement Through Test-Driven Development: An Empirical Study, David S. Janzen

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Despite a half century of advances, the software construction industry still shows signs of immaturity. Professional software development organizations continue to struggle to produce reliable software in a predictable and repeatable manner. While a variety of development practices are advocated that might improve the situation, developers are often reluctant to adopt new, potentially better practices based on anecdotal evidence alone. As a result, empirical software engineering has gained credibility as a discipline that provides scientific data about practice efficacy on which developers can make critical decisions. This research proposes to apply empirical software engineering techniques to evaluate a new approach …

Instrument Cross-Comparisons And Automated Quality Control Of Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Data, S. Moore, Gary B. Hughes

Statistics

Within the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) instrument network, several different systems often measure the same quantity at the same site. For example, several ARM instruments measure time-series profiles of the atmosphere that were previously available only from balloon-borne radiosonde systems. These instruments include the Radar Wind Profilers (RWP) with Radio-Acoustic Sounding Systems (RASS), the Atmospheric Emitted Radiance Interferometer (AERI), the Microwave Radiometer Profiler (MWRP), and the Raman Lidar (RL). ARM researchers have described methods for direct cross-comparison of time-series profiles (Coulter and Lesht 1996; Turner et al. 1996) and we have extended this concept to the development of methods for …

Transverse-Momentum Dependent Modification Of Dynamic Texture In Central Au + Au Collisions At √SNn=200 Gev, Star Collaboration, T.D. Gutierrez Mar 2005

Transverse-Momentum Dependent Modification Of Dynamic Texture In Central Au + Au Collisions At √SNn=200 Gev, Star Collaboration, T.D. Gutierrez

Physics

Correlations in the hadron distributions produced in relativistic Au+Au collisions are studied in the discrete wavelet expansion method. The analysis is performed in the space of pseudorapidity (|η|≤1)and azimuth(full 2π) in bins of transverse momentum (pt) from 0.14≤pt≤2.1GeV/c. In peripheral Au+Au collisions a correlation structure ascribed to minijet fragmentation is observed. It evolves with collision centrality and pt in a way not seen before, which suggests strong dissipation of minijet fragmentation in the longitudinally expanding medium.

Rapid Delivery Of Massive Geospatial Data Over Internet2, Rollin Strohman, Michael Haungs

Computer Science and Software Engineering

We study the feasibility of the on-demand delivery of a massive geospatial dataset over Internet2 for educational use. The dataset (20TB uncompressed, 2.5TB compressed), generously made available for this study by AirphotoUSA, provides a seamless, one-meter resolution aerial orthophotograph covering over three million square miles of the continental United States. We identify factors that limit the scalability, availability and user-perceived performance of serving such a dataset. To do this, we conduct experiments that measure response times for various levels of network congestion, bandwidth, and load. We also provide a proof-of-concept experiment by serving the dataset over Internet2 to students at …
