Atrial fibrillation (AF) prevalence increases with age; > 80% of US adults with AF are aged ≥ 65 years. Compare the risk of stroke/systemic embolism (SE), major bleeding (MB), net clinical outcome (NCO), and major adverse cardiac events (MACE) among elderly non-valvular AF (NVAF) Medicare patients prescribed direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) vs warfarin. NVAF patients aged ≥ 65 years who initiated DOACs (apixaban, dabigatran, and rivaroxaban) or warfarin were selected from 01JAN2013-31DEC2015 in CMS Medicare data. Propensity score matching was used to balance DOAC and warfarin cohorts. Cox proportional hazards models estimated the risk of stroke/SE, MB, NCO, and MACE. 37,525 …

Optical Detection And Storage Of Entanglement In Plasmonically Coupled Quantum-Dot Qubits, M. Otten, S.K. Gray, German Kolmakov V

Publications and Research

Recent proposals and advances in quantum simulations, quantum cryptography, and quantum communications substantially rely on quantum entanglement formation. Contrary to the conventional wisdom that dissipation destroys quantum coherence, coupling with a dissipative environment can also generate entanglement. We consider a system composed of two quantum-dot qubits coupled with a common, damped surface plasmon mode; each quantum dot is also coupled to a separate photonic cavity mode. Cavity quantum electrodynamics calculations show that upon optical excitation by a femtosecond laser pulse, entanglement of the quantum-dot excitons occurs, and the time evolution of the g(2) pair correlation function of the cavity photons …

A Multi-Criteria Gis Model For Suitability Analysis Of Locations Of Decentralized Wastewater Treatment Units: Case Study In Sulaimania, Iraq, Ako Rashed Hama, Rafea Hashim Al-Suhili, Zeren Jamal Ghafour

Publications and Research

Sulaimania is a City located in Kurdistan region in the north of Iraq. The city is facing a lack of water, and it will reach a very critical condition shortly. One of the potential solutions is to reuse the treated wastewater for non-direct human uses such as irrigation, washing, firefighting, groundwater recharging, and others. There is no sewage treatment plant in the city. The wastewater flows into a stream through some sewer outlets, and that causes big environmental issues. Decentralized wastewater treatment units (DTUs) are suggested to solve the issue. The treated wastewater will be used for the irrigation of …

Annihilator Dimers Enhance Triplet Fusion Upconversion, Andrew B. Pun, Samuel N. Sanders, Matthew Y. Sfeir, Luis M. Campos, Daniel N. Congreve

Publications and Research

Optical upconversion is a net process by which two low energy photons are converted into one higher energy photon. There is vast potential to exploit upconversion in applications ranging from solar energy and biological imaging to data storage and photocatalysis. Here, we link two upconverting chromophores together to synthesize a series of novel tetracene dimers for use as annihilators. When compared with the monomer annihilator, TIPS–tetracene, the dimers yield a strong enhancement in the triplet fusion process, also known as triplet–triplet annihilation, as demonstrated via a large increase in upconversion efficiency and an order of magnitude reduction of the threshold …

Self-Assembled Bismuth Selenide (Bi2se3) Quantum Dots Grown By Molecular Beam Epitaxy, Marcel S. Claro, Ido Levy, Abhinandan Gangopadhyay, David J. Smith, Maria C. Tamargo

Publications and Research

We report the growth of self-assembled Bi2se3 quantum dots (QDs) by molecular beam epitaxy on GaAs substrates using the droplet epitaxy technique. The QD formation occurs after anneal of Bismuth droplets under Selenium flux. Characterization by atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and X-ray reflectance spectroscopy is presented. Raman spectra confirm the QD quality. The quantum dots are crystalline, with hexagonal shape, and have average dimensions of 12-nm height (12 quintuple layers) and 46-nm width, and a density of 8.5 × 109 cm−2. this droplet growth technique provides a means to produce topological insulator …

Extraction Of Acids And Bases From Aqueous Phase To A Pseudoprotic Ionic Liquid, Nikolas Patsos, Karin Lewis, Francesco Picchioni, Mark N. Kobrak

Publications and Research

We report experiments on the extraction of acids and bases from an aqueous phase to a pseudoprotic ionic liquid phase consisting of an equimolar mixture of trihexylamine and octanoic acid. We observed the extraction of a wide range of acids and bases, and investigated the mechanism of extraction in detail. Our results confirmed the observation of the Hofmeister effect in these systems reported in our previous work, where the extent of the extraction of copper salts was significantly influenced by the interactions between extracted inorganic anions and the organic phase. Our results further demonstrated that the organic layer served as …

Allergen Sensitization And Asthma Outcomes Among World Trade Center Rescue And Recovery Workers, Belen Rojano, Erin West, Emily Federmann, Steven Markowitz, Denise Harrison, Laura Crowley, Paula Busse, Alex D. Federman, Juan P. Wisnivesky

Publications and Research

A large number of World Trade Center (WTC) rescue and recovery workers are affected by asthma. While physical and mental health comorbidities have been associated with poor asthma control in this population, the potential role of allergen sensitization is unknown. This study examined the association of indoor sensitization and exposure as a risk factor for increased asthma morbidity in WTC workers. We used data from a prospective cohort of 331 WTC workers with asthma. Sensitization to indoor allergens was assessed by measurement of antigen-specific serum immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels. We used validated tools to evaluate the exposure to indoor allergens. …

Young rifts are shaped by combined tectonic and surface processes and climate, yet few records exist to evaluate the interplay of these processes over an extended period of early rift-basin development. Here, we present the longest and highest resolution record of sediment flux and paleoenvinronmental changes when a young rift connects to the global concerns. New results from International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 381 in the Corinth Rift shows 10s-100s of kyr cyclic variations in basin paleoenvironment as eustatic sea level fluctuated with respect to sills bounding this semi-isolated basin, and reveal substantial corresponding changes in the volume and …

Publications and Research

The primary objective of International Ocean Discovery Program Expedition 381 was to retrieve a record of early continental rifting and basin evolution from the Corinth rift, central Greece. Continental rifting is fundamental for the formation of ocean basins, and active rift zones are dynamic regions of high geohazard potential. However, the detailed spatial and temporal evolution of a complete rift system needed to understand rift development from the fault to plate scale is poorly resolved. In the active Corinth rift, deformation rates are high, the recent synrift succession is preserved and complete offshore, and earlier rift phases are preserved onshore. …

Culture Clubs: Processing Speech By Deriving And Exploiting Linguistic Subcultures, David Guy Brizan Feb 2019

Culture Clubs: Processing Speech By Deriving And Exploiting Linguistic Subcultures, David Guy Brizan

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Spoken language understanding systems are error-prone for several reasons, including individual speech variability. This is manifested in many ways, among which are differences in pronunciation, lexical inventory, grammar and disfluencies. There is, however, a lot of evidence pointing to stable language usage within subgroups of a language population. We call these subgroups linguistic subcultures.

The two broad problems are defined and a survey of the work in this space is performed. The two broad problems are: linguistic subculture detection, commonly performed via Language Identification, Accent Identification or Dialect Identification approaches; and speech and language processing tasks taken which may see …

Solvation Thermodynamic Mapping In Computer Aided Drug Design, Steven Ramsey Feb 2019

Solvation Thermodynamic Mapping In Computer Aided Drug Design, Steven Ramsey

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The displacement of water from surfaces upon biomolecular recognition and association makes a significant contribution to the free energy changes of these processes. We therefore posit that accurate characterization of local structural and thermodynamic molecular water properties can improve computational model accuracy and predictivity of recognition and association processes. In this thesis, we discuss Solvation Thermodynamic Mapping (STM) methods that we have developed using inhomogeneous fluid solvation theory (IST) to better characterize active site water structural and thermodynamic properties on protein surfaces and the open source tools that we have developed, GIST-CPPTRAJ and SSTMap, which implement these methods which we …

Potential Degradation Of Hexabromocyclododecane (Hbcdd) In Sediments: Stereoisomer Specific Reaction Of Hbcdd With Reduced Sulfur Species Or Fe(Ii) Bound To Iron Oxides, Xianmiao Zhang

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The individual degradation rates of the three dominant stereoisomers (alpha, beta, gamma) of hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD) with bisulfide and polysulfides were investigated at pH 9-10 in methanol/water solutions at two different temperatures (25 °C and 40 °C). alpha-HBCDD reacts significantly slower than beta-HBCDD and gamma-HBCDD. It was also observed that the reaction of HBCDD with polysulfides is faster than with bisulfide. For the reaction of HBCDD with bisulfide, the experiments were performed in 20% water/80% methanol, 50% water/50% methanol and 80% water/20% methanol at 40 °C. It was determined that the solvent polarity affects the reaction and the second-order rate constants …

Magnetic Resonance Studies Of Free Radicals Generation And Their Impact In Different Polymers, Sunita Humagain Feb 2019

Magnetic Resonance Studies Of Free Radicals Generation And Their Impact In Different Polymers, Sunita Humagain

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Studies of free radicals in the physics, chemistry, biology, and materials science have contributed to advancements in those fields. The presence of radicals can damage the material and system in some instances and, in some cases, they may enhance the property of the material as well. Knowledge of free radical transformations helps in resilience of certain polymers and inhibition of the oxidation of food and medicine. In this thesis, using the magnetic resonance techniques, EPR and NMR, the generation of free radicals and their effect on the structure of the material is being studied.
