Control Of Energy Transfer And Molecular Energetics Using Photonic Nanostructures, Rahul Deshmukh
Control Of Energy Transfer And Molecular Energetics Using Photonic Nanostructures, Rahul Deshmukh
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In the last three decades, the design and fabrication of different types of photonic nanostructures have allowed us to control and enhance the interaction of light (or photons) with matter (or excitons). In this work, we demonstrate the use of three different nanostructures to control different material properties. The design and fabrication of the nanostructures is discussed along with the results obtained using characterization techniques of angle-resolved white light reflectivity and transmission, and time-resolved and steady-state photoluminescence experiments. Specifically, we demonstrate the use of Optical Topological Transitions (OTT) in metamaterials to show enhanced efficiency in the non-radiative transfer of energy …
Bisthioether Stapled Peptides Targeting Polycomb Repressive Complex 2 Gene Repression, Gan Zhang
Bisthioether Stapled Peptides Targeting Polycomb Repressive Complex 2 Gene Repression, Gan Zhang
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Interactions between proteins play a key role in nearly all cellular process, and therefore, disruption of such interactions may lead to many different types of cellular dysfunctions. Hence, pathologic protein-protein interactions (PPIs) constitute highly attractive drug targets and hold great potential for developing novel therapeutic agents for the treatment of incurable human diseases. Unfortunately, the identification of PPI inhibitors is an extremely challenging task, since traditionally used small molecule ligands are mostly unable to cover and anchor on the extensive flat surfaces that define those binary protein complexes. In contrast, large biomolecules such as proteins or peptides are ideal fits …
One-Dimensional Excited Random Walk With Unboundedly Many Excitations Per Site, Omar Chakhtoun
One-Dimensional Excited Random Walk With Unboundedly Many Excitations Per Site, Omar Chakhtoun
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
We study a discrete time excited random walk on the integers lattice requiring a tail decay estimate on the number of excitations per site and extend the existing framework, methods, and results to a wider class of excited random walks.
We give criteria for recurrence versus transience, ballisticity versus zero linear speed, completely classify limit laws in the transient regime, and establish a functional limit laws in the recurrence regime.
Emergent Critical Properties In Liquid-Gas Transition And Single Dislocations In Solid He4, Max Yarmolinsky
Emergent Critical Properties In Liquid-Gas Transition And Single Dislocations In Solid He4, Max Yarmolinsky
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
My research focuses on the analytical and numerical study of seemingly completely different systems - the classical critical point of the liquid-gas transition and a quantum topological defect (dislocation) in solid Helium-4. The unifying theme, though, is Emergence - the appearance of unexpected qualities at large distance and time scales in these systems. Our results resolve the long standing controversy about the nature of the liquid-gas criticality by showing with high confidence that it is the same as that of Ising ferromagnet. In solid 4He, a quantum superclimbing dislocation, which is expected to be violating space-time symmetry according to …
Pretargeted Radioimmunotherapy Utilizing The Inverse Electron Demand Diels-Alder Reaction, Rosemery Membreno
Pretargeted Radioimmunotherapy Utilizing The Inverse Electron Demand Diels-Alder Reaction, Rosemery Membreno
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Radioimmunotherapy capitalizes on the specificity and affinity of antibodies for their antigens to localize radioactivity at the tumor site. One limitation in using antibodies is their long circulation time, which can take days to weeks to fully clear from blood circulation. When a radioisotope is directly conjugated to this immunoglobulin vector, the red marrow and other healthy organs are receiving a constant radiation dose while it is in blood circulation. This not only harms healthy organs, but limits the dose of radioactivity that can be administered thus prolonging treatment. A promising alternative to limit the radiation dose to non-tumor tissue …
Control Of Light-Matter Interactions Via Nanostructured Photonic Materials, Nicholas Proscia
Control Of Light-Matter Interactions Via Nanostructured Photonic Materials, Nicholas Proscia
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The thesis here investigates the manipulation of light-matter interactions via nanoscale engineering of material systems. When material systems are structured on the nanoscale, their optical responses can be dramatically altered. In this thesis, this is done in two primary ways: One method is by changing the geometry of nanostructures to induce a resonant behavior with incident electromagnetic field of optical wavelengths. This allows field enhancement in highly localized areas to strengthen exotic light-matter interactions that would otherwise be too weak to measure or for practical use. In this regard, the work presented here studies a voltage produced in a metal …
Deep Learning Based Medical Image Analysis With Limited Data, Jiaxing Tan
Deep Learning Based Medical Image Analysis With Limited Data, Jiaxing Tan
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Deep Learning Methods have shown its great effort in the area of Computer Vision. However, when solving the problems of medical imaging, deep learning’s power is confined by limited data available. We present a series of novel methodologies for solving medical imaging analysis problems with limited Computed tomography (CT) scans available. Our method, based on deep learning, with different strategies, including using Generative Adversar- ial Networks, two-stage training, infusing the expert knowledge, voting based or converting to other space, solves the data set limitation issue for the cur- rent medical imaging problems, specifically cancer detection and diagnosis, and shows very …
Development Of Palladium(0)-Catalyzed Suzuki Cross-Coupling Polymerizations, Wei Peng
Development Of Palladium(0)-Catalyzed Suzuki Cross-Coupling Polymerizations, Wei Peng
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The synthesis of well-defined and high molecular weight π-conjugated polymers under mild condition within short reaction time is a challenging and important task in both organic chemistry and polymer chemistry. As one of the most efficient and high tolerance to solvents and reaction conditions, palladium(0)-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions would give us a good chance to achieve the goal. Thus, my Ph. D dissertation research projects focused on developing Pd(0)-catalyzed Suzuki cross-coupling polymerization reactions including controlled ones.
My research first studied t-Bu3P-coordinated 2-phenylaniline-based palladacycle complex catalyzed Suzuki cross-coupling polymerization of aryl dibromides with aryldiboronic acids at room temperature. Based …
Synthesis And Evaluation Of Novel Iodine-124 Labeled Nucleoside Analogs As Pet Imaging Agents To Predict Response To Gemcitabine Therapy, Kishore Kumar Gangangari
Synthesis And Evaluation Of Novel Iodine-124 Labeled Nucleoside Analogs As Pet Imaging Agents To Predict Response To Gemcitabine Therapy, Kishore Kumar Gangangari
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Gemcitabine (gem) is a nucleoside analog that is used to treat pancreatic cancers (PaCa), which have dismal prognosis and low survival rate. Though gem is used as first line of treatment for PaCa, the response rate is quite low (~30%). Currently, there is no a priori way to determine a responder from a non-responder to gem therapy either invasively or non-invasively. Any biomarker that can act as a prognostic indicator of gem response will greatly aid in selecting responsive patients to gem therapy and provide alternative options such as Folfirinox or other treatments to resistant patient population. Amongst various known …

Large-scale landslides at volcanic islands are one of the most dangerous geological phenomena, able to generate tsunamis whose effects can propagate far from the source. However, related deposits are scarcely preserved on-land in the geologic records, and are often difficult to be interpreted. Here we show the discovery of three unprecedented well-preserved tsunami deposits related to repeated flank collapses of the volcanic island of Stromboli (Southern Italy) occurred during the Late Middle Ages. Based on carbon datings, on stratigraphic, volcanological and archaeological evidence, we link the oldest, highest-magnitude investigated tsunami to the following rapid abandonment of the island which was …

Peculiar Optical Properties Of Bilayer Silicene Under The Influence Of External Electric And Magnetic Fields, Thi-Nga Do, Godfrey Gumbs, Po-Hsin Shih, Danhong Huang, Chih-Wei Chiu, Chia-Yun Chen, Ming-Fa Lin
Publications and Research
We conduct a comprehensive investigation of the effect of an applied electric field on the optical and magneto-optical absorption spectra for AB-bt (bottom-top) bilayer silicene. The generalized tightbinding model in conjunction with the Kubo formula is efficiently employed in the numerical calculations. The electronic and optical properties are greatly diversified by the buckled lattice structure, stacking configuration, intralayer and interlayer hopping interactions, spin-orbital couplings, as well as the electric and magnetic fields (Ez ˆz & Bz ˆz ). An electric field induces spin-split electronic states, a semiconductor-metal phase transitions and the Dirac cone formations in different valleys, leading to the …

Observational Time Series For Lakes Azuei And Enriquillo: Surface Area, Volume, And Elevation, Mahrokh Moknatian, Michael Piasecki
Publications and Research
In this report, we present historical time series of surface area, volume, and elevation for lakes Azuei (Haiti) and Enriquillo (Dominican Republic). The intention is to present a history of the lakes’ levels for both bodies of water as derived from Landsat imagery that is augmented by reports and narratives that reach further back in time. We also summarize lake level time series data collected and developed through various other efforts and compare these data sets to our time series. The time series contains 45 years’ worth of data ranging from 1972 to 2017 which we developed from Landsat imagery …

Copper-Mediated N1-Arylation Of Benzotriazoles, Magdalena R. Andrzejewska
Dissertations and Theses
Benzotriazoles are group of bicyclic heterocyclic compounds that contain three nitrogen atoms fused to a benzene ring. Along with their derivatives, they possess a wide range of properties. They are used in medical field, as they exhibit such properties as antibacterial, antiplasmoidal, antiprotozoal, antifungal and anti-inflammatory activities, among others. They are also used in various industries as herbicides, UV absorbers, deicing and antiicing agents and corrosion inhibitors, to list a few. Because of their wide range of applications, we designed a new two-step synthesis for the formation of N-1-aryl benzotriazoles. 1-Hydroxy-1H-benzotriazole N-oxides were synthesized using phenylboronic acid (PhB(OH) …

On A Generalization Of A Theorem Of Ibukiyama, Brad Isaacson
Publications and Research
We generalize a theorem of Ibukiyama and express periodic generalized Bernoulli functions by generalized Bernoulli numbers. As a corollary, we obtain formulas expressing these character sums by generalized Bernoulli numbers using only elementary methods from algebra and number theory.
