Contour Cultivation : Cheap Erosion Control, T R. Negus, B. Barrett
Contour Cultivation : Cheap Erosion Control, T R. Negus, B. Barrett
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Although the benefits of contour cultivation are well recognised, it makes cultivation more difficult, particularly if the paddock is split by contour banks and grassed waterways. However, a comparison east of Pingelly indicates that contour cultivation is little more expensive or time-consuming than ordinary cultivation.

Fallow re-assessment. I. 72M29. Location - Merredin Research Station II. Other fallow results. As part of the fallow re-assessment project, a study was made of results from all trials done since the early 1920's which either compared fallow with non fallow or examined other aspects of fallowing. Analysis of these data has led to an update of some of the rainfall - soil water storage - yield relationships presented in previous reports. On the basis of these rainfall-yield relationships and of relevant rainfall statistics we can make an assessment of the probable value of fallow at different locations; Merredin; Chapman, …

COMMENTS 1. No insect problems experienced and broadleaf weeds effectively controlled by spraying. Septoria· leaf spot incidence insufficient to affect yields. 2. Little effect of time of planting on either total dry matter or grain yield. Crop received about 70% of the average May-October rainfall with a very dry September-October. Perhaps the distribution of rainfall allowed a similar pattern of water use, and total water use by each planting time. 3. There is probably a significant effect of Nitrogen regime on grain yield. Osmocote (N3) consistently yielded more than either single (N1) or repeated (N2) dressings of Agran 34:0. The …

Soil Potential For Groundnut Production At Kununurra, Western Australia : Report Of A Survey Conducted In January 1979, J C. Dixon, Richard J. Petheram
Technical Bulletins
Production of groundnuts in trials on irrigated Cockatoo Sands near Kununurra have been sufficiently encouraging for a soil survey to be requested of three small areas possibly suitable for commercial release. It was anticipated that between 1 000 and 1 200 ha would be necessary in the immediate future for development of five farms for groundnut production. The survey was begun in November 1978 to: classify the sand soil types. determine the potential of these types for with groundnut production. examine possible relationships between soils and vegetation to be used when selecting land for groundnut production.

Cereal, Pasture Legume And Water Supply Prospects At Forrestania : Results Of Experimental Work East Of Hyden, Western Australia, T E. Mcdowell, M G. Mason, J W. Gartrell, William J. Toms, I A F Laing
Technical Bulletins
The agricultural potential of the Forrestania area appears at least equal to that of much of the settled eastern wheatbelt. The scrubplain soils of the Forrestania area have an average yield potential of at least 1 000 kg/ha wheat and carrying capacity of 1.8 to 3.7 sheep per hectare on improved pastures. The use of clover ley rotations would maintain these levels of potential yield. Partial crop failures caused by adverse seasonal conditions could be expected 10 years in every 100.

The Causes Of Saltland : A Case Study At Esperance, P R. George, S. C. Bull
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
A series of bores on the Esperance Downs Research Station has demonstrated that the groundwater levels change after clearing, and the relatiojnnship between groundwater levels and soil salinity has been emphasised. This pattern of hydrological change leading to soil salinity problems applies widely in the wheatbelt.
