Soil And Plant Analysis : A Guide To Fertilizer Usage, Walter Jacob Cox
Soil And Plant Analysis : A Guide To Fertilizer Usage, Walter Jacob Cox
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Soil and plant analysis can be used to identify problems in soils, diagnose nutrient deficiencies and as a guide to fertiliser usage.
Soil testing is particularily useful where large amounts of phosphorus and potassium are leached or removed from the paddock in hay or silage.
Actual rates of fertiliser can only be recommended from soil testing and only in conjunction with additional biological and economic information.

Producing 20-Month Old Beef Steers Off Annual Pasture, K D. Greathead, D. J. Barker, W. J. Ryan
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
A recent Mt Barker experiment compared two systems of fodder conservation with continuous grazing, using two types of steers, at three stocking rates. Year-round performance, carcass composition, and resulting costs and returns per hectare were assessed.
Production per hectare was greatest from crossbred steers at the intermediate stocking rate with either type of fodder conservation.

Potassium Deficiency In Lupins : Identification, Rates, Times And Method Of Application, Walter Jacob Cox
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Large areas of sandplain soils north of Perth are low in potassium levels, and responses to applied potassium have been large for both sub. clover and grain lupins.
This article indicates where potassium might be needed, and how to diagnose and overcome deficiencies in lupins.

Deep Drainage As A Method Of Treating Saltland, Eric Bettenay
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
In some situations, deep drainage may be warranted to return salt-affected land to full production.
This method is being investigated at CSIRO's Yalanbee Experiment Station.

Seed yields of early maturing subterranean clovers. A brief description of weather conditions in 1977, site details and results of germination counts and growth ratings were included in the Summary Report for 1977. Drill-sown trials - Seed yields from the trials varied from good in the southern wheatbelt to very poor in the northern areas. Test samples were taken from trials 77GE32, 77GE40 and 77GE41 in the Pindar and Tardun districts, 77ME22 at Koorda and 77TS25 at Perenjori but the quantity of seed did not warrant yield assessment. Trial 77M022 at Gabalong was not sampled. Seed yields from the rest …

Soil Salinity In Western Australia : A Summary, T C. Stoneman
Soil Salinity In Western Australia : A Summary, T C. Stoneman
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Soil salinity problems have long been recognised in Western Australia. The earliest published explanation in 1924 suggested that removing native vegetation increased stream salinity, and this basic cause has been confirmed by many studies since.

Longevity Of Doublegee Seed Under Continuous Pasture, D J. Gilbey
Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
Locality: Avondale, Wongan Hills and Chapman Research Stations. Background. Since 1974 pegged areas on the three research stations have been under continuous pasture and have been sampled annually to study the fate of the viable doublegee seed population. Each site was sprayed for doublegee control in the growing season before the first samples were taken in late summer of 73/74. The sites were again sprayed in the 1974 growing season except for Wongan Hills. The Wongan Hills site was cropped in 1976 and no further data is available. 74C7, 75WH65, 75WH66, 76AL11, 76C9, 76C6, 77C3, 77GE9, 77LC26, 77ME28, 77M028, 77N034, …

The European Wasp : A New Threat To W.A, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
The European wasp was detected in Western australia for the first time in January and February 1977 in the metropolitan suburbs of Mosman Park, Cottesloe and Attadale.
So far it has only been found within an area of 8 km radius from Fremantle but the outer boundries of the infestation are still uncertain.
It is Department of agriculture policy to eradicate the European wasp, if possible, and to destroy all nests detected.
