Design Standards For Farm Surface Water Supplies, J L. Frith
Design Standards For Farm Surface Water Supplies, J L. Frith
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Design is usually concerned with getting adequate return from limited recources. Farm dams which dry up represent dam failure. Less seriously, so too do dams which, although not drying out, never fill; they waste a recource.
Groundwater In The Wheatbelt, E P. O'Driscoll
Groundwater In The Wheatbelt, E P. O'Driscoll
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
In general six factors affect the occurence of groundwater; rainfall, topography, rock type, rock structurs, vegetation, and local evaporation.
Variation in even one of these can affect the potential yield of a bore or well, the groundwater salinity, and even whether any groundwater occurs at all.

In early August the Oombulgurri community requested assistance in the following terms.
"On behalf of the Oombulgurri Community, we invite assistance in developing the grain and pasture cropping at Oombulgurri. We have experimented with peanuts, sorghum, and many varieties of vegetables. This has tested the reality of hopes to expand acreage and varieties to become self-sufficient in stock feed. The Farm and Garden Guild now needs the expertise of your services to plan a four-year programme. vie need assistance in choosing from the many options, opinions and advices available from Australia and elsewhere, for grain production, pastures, methods appropriate to …

1976 Sunflower-Safflower Irrigated Variety Trial 1976-1977, G J. Parlevliet
Experimental Summaries - Plant Research
In 1975/76 two varieties of sunflower, Hysun 10 and Hysun 20, as well as Safflower (Gila) were grown in a large alternative crop demonstration. Results were sufficiently good to warrant more and closer examination. This led to the present variety trial using varieties suggested by Mr. M. Poole. The aim was to evaluate six sunflower varieties and one safflower. The work was carried out in the light of reduced profitability of peas, beans and some fruit crops. This results in a number of growers having irrigation water and equipment under-employed. Other farmers are after a crop which will give them …

Sealing Farm Dams, I A F Laing, R. G. Pepper
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
Research over the past 10 years has shown that it is technically possible to seal many leaking farm dams. In some situations a cheap chemical treatment is effective but in most cases it is cheaper to construct a replacement dam.
This article reviews the situation in western Australia and outlines some of the methods used for sealing dams.

A Comparison Of Hay Conservation Systems, E E. Rowley
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
The high cost an dshortage of farm labour in the Esperance District is posing serious problems for farmers using traditional hay conservation systems. Author Ted Rowley, then an advisor with the Esperance District office of the Department of Agriculture surveyed a number of farms to study the economics of varoius alternatives. This article is a summary of his report presented to a 1976 Fodder Conservation Workshop.

Forty six of these trials consisted of four replications and the other three had three replications and all reps were soil sampled separately. In each rep. of the 46 trials. 20 samples were taken to 10 cm depth with pogo stick samplers. In the.other three trials 30 samples per rep. were taken. In addition, from three holes at random across each trial, bulk samples were obtained from the 0-15, …

Salt Encroachment : The 1974 Saltland Survey, C V. Malcolm, R. C. Stoneman
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
It has long been recognised that the clearing of land for agriculture in the south western Australia is followed by the development of saline soils and streams.
In 1955 and again in 1962, in conjunction with the annual statistical returns, farmers in Western Australia were asked to supply estimates of salt-affected land on their properties.
In 1974 a further survey was conducted, in co-operation with the Australian Bureau of Statistics, using questions covering only the basic information. As the information is again available on a Shire basis a direct comparison can be made with the 1962 survey except for some …
Comparison Of Economic Returns From Grain Crops, H M. Fisher
Comparison Of Economic Returns From Grain Crops, H M. Fisher
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
While wheat is still generally the most profitable crop in Western Australia the relative profitability of barley and linseed has risen in the last few years; in southern areas they are likely to be at least as profitable as wheat.
Oats has fallen in profitability relative to wheat, and grain legumes have suffered a marked fall. Yields of these grains have increased with the introduction of new varieties but their price increases have not kept pace with those of wheat and barley. The present relationship of yields and costs indicates that substantial price changes will be needed to change the …

A series of 9 trials to compare the crossbred subterranean clovers Nungarin, 239.2 and 584.1B. with Northam and Geraldton was sown in representative, dry wheatbelt localities in 1976. The trials were sown in randomised blocks with four replications on sites which carried little or no clover. Plot size was 4.22 metres by 40 metres. Superphosphate was applied at rates related to past applications and soil type, but was usually about 200 kg a hectare. Copper, zinc and molybdenum were applied where necessary. Seed …
