The Global Sustainability Transition: It Is More Than Changing Light Bulbs, Michael P. Weinstein, R. Eugene Turner, Carles Ibanez Jan 2013

The Global Sustainability Transition: It Is More Than Changing Light Bulbs, Michael P. Weinstein, R. Eugene Turner, Carles Ibanez

Faculty Publications

Current policies and norms to reconcile human demands for resources with the Earth’s ability to supply them have resulted in practices that mainly treat the symptoms of unsustainability rather than their underlying causes. Moreover, the increase in our knowledge about humankind’s role in ecosystems is not keeping pace with our understanding of the consequences of our actions, resulting in a deepening inability to address sustainability issues. The extreme complexity and intricate workings of the world require the expansion of our mental models in a systems-thinking framework if we are to realize a sustainable place for humans in it. The challenge …

Detection Of Microorganisms Using Maldi And Ion Mobility Mass Spectrometry, Juaneka Monet Hayes Jan 2013

Detection Of Microorganisms Using Maldi And Ion Mobility Mass Spectrometry, Juaneka Monet Hayes

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Matrix-assisted laser ablation desorption ionization MALDI and ion mobility (IM) MALDI mass spectrometry (MS) were used for the detection and identification of microorganisms. MALDI MS is an analytical tool that separates ions by their mass-to-charge ratio (m/z) and is routinely used for bioanalysis because of its sensitivity, selectivity, general applicability, and tolerance to impurities. Ion mobility is a gas phase technique that separates ions based on their charge and collision cross-section. In this research, MALDI-TOF MS and MALDI-IM-TOF MS analysis were conducted in parallel to assess the effectiveness of MALDI-IM-TOF MS for microorganism identification. Whole cell bacteria Escherichia coli strain …

Numerical Investigations Of Holstein Phonons On The Periodic Anderson Model, Peng Zhang Jan 2013

Numerical Investigations Of Holstein Phonons On The Periodic Anderson Model, Peng Zhang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In condensed matter physics, the idea of localized magnetic moments and the scattering of conduction electrons by those local moments are of central importance not only for explaining the transport of electrons at low temperature region but also for developing the related models and theories to extend our understanding of novel physics like non-conventional superconductor, quantum phase transition and non-Fermi liquid behavior. In the first chapter of this work, I will look back at the discovery of Kondo scattering, the introduction of Anderson impurity scenario, the extension to lattice version of the Anderson impurities, the periodic Anderson model, and how …

Magnetic Deflections Of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays From Centaurus A, Azadeh Keivani Jan 2013

Magnetic Deflections Of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays From Centaurus A, Azadeh Keivani

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The origin and mass composition of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) are among the mysteries of particle astrophysics. Since UHECRs are mostly or entirely charged particles, they will be deflected in cosmic magnetic fields on their way to Earth. UHECR deflections in the Galactic magnetic fields (GMF) should be considered to identify their origin and nature.

The calculated Galactic magnetic deflections of UHECRs from a source strongly depend on the GMF model. I use the recent GMF model of Jansson and Farrar (JF12), a 35-parameter model which includes coherent, striated and random components and is constrained by WMAP7 Galactic synchrotron …

Photometric Variability Of X-Ray Sources In The Galactic Bulge, Christopher Tillman Britt Jan 2013

Photometric Variability Of X-Ray Sources In The Galactic Bulge, Christopher Tillman Britt

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The Chandra Galactic Bulge Survey (GBS) undertakes to find and classify X-ray sources in the Galactic Bulge. Of these X-ray sources, there is likely a significant minority which are Low Mass X-ray Binaries: systems containing either a neutron star or black hole that is accreting matter from a roughly stellar mass companion via Roche-Lobe overflow. I use optical time-series photometry from the Mosaic-II instrument on the Blanco 4m telescope at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory to identify counterparts to new X-ray sources in the GBS. Of those that are variable in brightness, I use the morphology of the changes and …

Vibrio Parahaemolyticus Interactions With Chitin In Response To Environmental Factors, Vanessa Molina Jan 2013

Vibrio Parahaemolyticus Interactions With Chitin In Response To Environmental Factors, Vanessa Molina

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a naturally occurring chitinoclastic human pathogen that adsorbs to substrates, including chitinous copepods and oysters, as part of its ecology, a phenomenon that is important in its responses to changes in environmental factors such as temperature and salinity. Little is known about acute responses of V. parahaemolyticus when subjected to abrupt environmental changes such as those encountered during postharvest oyster treatments such as icing, exposure to mammalian host conditions, and transport via ballast water. The following in vitro studies investigated V. parahaemolyticus adsorption and gene expression as a function of substrate, temperature, and salinity as a model …

Quantum Simulations On Square And Triangular Hubbard Models, Kuang-Shing Chen Jan 2013

Quantum Simulations On Square And Triangular Hubbard Models, Kuang-Shing Chen

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this thesis we try to understand the unconventional superconducting mechanism on cuprates and organic superconductors (or sodium cobaltates) which can be modeled by a two-dimensional square- and triangular-lattice Hubbard model respectively. The formation of the superconducting dome requires explanations of feasible scenarios. Generally speaking, pairing strength is provided by magnetic fl_x001D_uctuations in the strongly correlated region and the structure of the Fermi surface in this region will favor superconducting pairings with a certain type of symmetry. For the cuprate physics, a superconducting dome composed of d-wave pairings has been identified experimentally. We study the Hubbard model on square lattices …

Program Analysis : Termination Proofs For Linear Simple Loops, Hongyi Chen Jan 2013

Program Analysis : Termination Proofs For Linear Simple Loops, Hongyi Chen

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Termination proof synthesis for simple loops, i.e., loops with only conjoined constraints in the loop guard and variable updates in the loop body, is the building block of termination analysis, as well as liveness analysis, for large complex imperative systems. In particular, we consider a subclass of simple loops which contain only linear constraints in the loop guard and linear updates in the loop body. We call them Linear Simple Loops (LSLs). LSLs are particularly interesting because most loops in practice are indeed linear; more importantly, since we allow the update statements to handle nondeterminism, LSLs are expressive enough to …
