Sustainability: More About The Toolmaker Than The Tools, R. Eugene Turner Apr 2012

Sustainability: More About The Toolmaker Than The Tools, R. Eugene Turner

Faculty Publications

A sustainable system is not necessarily a high-quality one, but it could be. We could, for example, “survive” on the desperate edge, as the remnants in a self-fouled and deteriorating environment. Why won’t a future sustainable system be just another industrial model of mass efficiency and throughput? Perhaps the incompatible outcomes are a choice between the sometimes nearly invisible civilizing aspects of culture nurturing respect, equality, and cooperation on one hand, and the greed and self-indulgences undermining social tolerance, empathy, and cooperation that ends up promoting violence and dehumanization. The human heritage is subtle, indestructible, and worth nurturing if we …

Oyun: A New, Free Program For Iterated Prisoner’S Dilemma Tournaments In The Classroom, Charles H. Pence, Lara Buchak Jan 2012

Oyun: A New, Free Program For Iterated Prisoner’S Dilemma Tournaments In The Classroom, Charles H. Pence, Lara Buchak

Faculty Publications

Evolutionary applications of game theory present one of the most pedagogically accessible varieties of genuine, contemporary theoretical biology. We present here Oyun (oy-oon, http://charlespence.net/oyun), a program designed to run iterated prisoner's dilemma tournaments, competitions between prisoner's dilemma strategies developed by the students themselves. Using this software, students are able to readily design and tweak their own strategies, and to see how they fare both in round-robin tournaments and in “evolutionary” tournaments, where the scores in a given “generation” directly determine contribution to the population in the next generation. Oyun is freely available, runs on Windows, Mac, and Linux computers, …

Development And Validation Of An Electron Monte Carlo Model For The Elekta Infinity Accelerator, Guy Merritt Harris Jan 2012

Development And Validation Of An Electron Monte Carlo Model For The Elekta Infinity Accelerator, Guy Merritt Harris

LSU Master's Theses

Purpose: The purpose of this work was to create a Monte Carlo BEAMnrc/EGSnrc model of the electron beam delivery system of an Elekta Infinity linear accelerator that could simulate electron percent depth doses and off-axis profiles to within a specified tolerance criteria, ±2% relative quantities (Dmax) or 1 mm distance to agreement (DTA), when compared to a subset of the measured commissioning data for the accelerator’s existing set of scattering foils and applicators. Methods: The model was constructed with the BEAMnrc user code from vendor provided schematics and correspondence with manufacturer engineers under a nondisclosure agreement. The spatial distribution of …

Hypercube Diagrams For Knots, Links, And Knotted Tori, Ben Mccarty Jan 2012

Hypercube Diagrams For Knots, Links, And Knotted Tori, Ben Mccarty

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

For a knot K the cube number is a knot invariant defined to be the smallest n for which there is a cube diagram of size n for K. Examples of knots for which the cube number detects chirality are presented. There is also a Legendrian version of this invariant called the Legendrian cube number. We will show that the Legendrian cube number distinguishes the Legendrian left hand torus knots with maximal Thurston-Bennequin number and maximal rotation number from the Legendrian left hand torus knots with maximal Thurston-Bennequin number and minimal rotation number. Finally, there is a generalization of cube …

Infrared Laser Ablation For Biological Mass Spectrometry, Fan Huang Jan 2012

Infrared Laser Ablation For Biological Mass Spectrometry, Fan Huang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Instrument and technique development and modeling of ionization methods using infrared (IR) laser desorption and ablation for mass spectrometry (MS) analysis of chemical and biochemical samples are described. Infrared lasers are highly efficient at sample removal and post-ablation ionization of materials removed by IR laser can be used to improve ionization efficiency. Fundamental studies of the physical processes in laser ablation mass spectrometry can help elucidate the mechanism. In this research, an infrared/ultraviolet two-laser matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) MS was developed for analysis of biomolecules. An infrared laser was used to ablate a mixture of analyte and matrix, and …

Deductive Formal Verification Of Embedded Systems, Zheng Lu Jan 2012

Deductive Formal Verification Of Embedded Systems, Zheng Lu

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

We combine static analysis techniques with model-based deductive verification using SMT solvers to provide a framework that, given an analysis aspect of the source code, automatically generates an analyzer capable of inferring information about that aspect.

The analyzer is generated by translating the collecting semantics of a program to a formula in first order logic over multiple underlying theories. We import the semantics of the API invocations as first order logic assertions. These assertions constitute the models used by the analyzer. Logical specification of the desired program behavior is incorporated as a first order logic formula. An SMT-LIB solver treats …

Red Swamp Crayfish Procambarus Clarkii In The Atchafalaya River Basin: Biotic And Abiotic Effects On Population Dynamics And Physiological Biomarkers Of Hypoxic Stress, Christopher Paul Bonvillain Jan 2012

Red Swamp Crayfish Procambarus Clarkii In The Atchafalaya River Basin: Biotic And Abiotic Effects On Population Dynamics And Physiological Biomarkers Of Hypoxic Stress, Christopher Paul Bonvillain

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Crayfish harvested from the Atchafalaya River Basin (ARB) represent the majority of Louisiana wild crayfish landings. However, excluding water level influences, it is difficult to elucidate inter-annual harvest differences and intra-annual population variability among habitats. This research investigated ecological influences on population characteristics of red swamp crayfish Procambarus clarkii in the southeastern ARB as well as physiological biomarkers of hypoxic stress in P. clarkii. Biotic and abiotic effects on P. clarkii populations were examined throughout the 2008 and 2009 commercial crayfish seasons. P. clarkii catch per unit effort (CPUE) at sampling locations increased nearly 600% between sample years despite similar …

Graham's Variety And Perverse Sheaves On The Nilpotent Cone, Amber Russell Jan 2012

Graham's Variety And Perverse Sheaves On The Nilpotent Cone, Amber Russell

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In recent work, Graham has defined a variety which maps to the nilpotent cone, and which shares many properties with the Springer resolution. However, Graham's map is not an isomorphism over the principal orbit, and for type A in particular, its fibers have a nice relationship with the fundamental groups of the nilpotent orbits. The goal of this dissertation is to determine which simple perverse sheaves appear when the Decomposition Theorem for perverse sheaves is applied in Graham's setting for type A, and to begin to answer this question in the other types as well. In Chapter 1, we give …

Synthesis, Characterization, And Self-Assembly Of Porphyrins Conjugated To Superparamagnetic Colloidal Particles For Enhanced Photodynamic Therapy, Javoris Hollingsworth Jan 2012

Synthesis, Characterization, And Self-Assembly Of Porphyrins Conjugated To Superparamagnetic Colloidal Particles For Enhanced Photodynamic Therapy, Javoris Hollingsworth

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Porphyrins and their derivatives are often used as photosensitizers in photodynamic therapy (PDT), which is a noninvasive antitumor treatment. The photochemical process for PDT involves exciting a photosensitizing agent with visible light, which induces cytotoxicity in the presence of oxygen as a result of forming reactive oxygen species (ROS). The ROS are the responsible components for invoking cell death and destruction of tumors. Although this mechanism is an effective cancer therapeutic, it still has many shortcomings. One major challenge of PDT concerns improving the tumor selectivity and specificity of photosensitizers because porphyrins have nonspecific affinity to tumor cells. The discussed …
