The Effect Of Sulphur Dioxide Gas On Sweet Potatoes, Cotton, And Sorghum Cane Plants, Milburn Leo Dorris Jan 1922

The Effect Of Sulphur Dioxide Gas On Sweet Potatoes, Cotton, And Sorghum Cane Plants, Milburn Leo Dorris

Bachelors Theses

"The chief allegation made by many of the complainants sic in the vicinity of the zinc smelters is that the emanations from the stacks are detrimental to the yield of the crops, especially Sweet Potatoes and Cotton. They claim that on account of the leaves being burned or bleached, the entire plant is poisoned and weakened and the yield is thereby reduced. It was even claimed by some that the presence of the smoke in the atmosphere around the plant has a weakening effect in that it is cumulative, and, while it does not always visibly show, yet the general …

The Equilibrium Of The Reaction Zn + Co₂ = Zno + Co, Clarence Ware Burkhart Jan 1922

The Equilibrium Of The Reaction Zn + Co₂ = Zno + Co, Clarence Ware Burkhart

Masters Theses

"Many attempts have been made in the last twenty years to smelt zinc ores in the electric furnace. The disadvantages of the present retort process have been discussed so often that they need not be dwelt upon here. The principle ones are, the low thermal efficiency of the retort furnace, low metal recoveries, small smelting units necessary, short life of the retorts and the difficulty of treating impure and low grade ores. Electric smelting offers remedies for most of these difficulties"--Introduction, page 1.

The Action Of Tan Bark In The Manufacture Of White Lead By The Old Dutch Process, Elmer List Jan 1922

The Action Of Tan Bark In The Manufacture Of White Lead By The Old Dutch Process, Elmer List

Masters Theses

"This investigation was undertaken because there is very little definite information in print, regarding the micro-organisms which play such an important part in the Old Dutch Process for manufacturing white lead. The statements concerning this process are very general in character. For instance, one book states, "The first action which goes on is to convert blue lead into basic acetate of lead. This is brought about by the heat of the fermenting tan, causing the evolution of acetic acid from the liquid of the pots." Albert H. Hooker in a little treatise on white lead says: "As it stands now, …

Investigations In Colloidal Phenol, Charles James Millar Jan 1922

Investigations In Colloidal Phenol, Charles James Millar

Masters Theses

"In making some experiments with various colloids it was noticed that phenol and water seemingly formed a colloid, so it was deemed advisable to experiment farther and see if this fact could be established. The references on this subject vary widely and for this reason some of them are given here. Ostwald recognised [sic] the colloid state of a phenol-water mixture at the critical temperature but evidently failed to see the possibility of the phenol-water colloid at all temperatures. In the following article I will try to show that the phenol-water mixture forms a colloid, not only at the critical …

The Middle Ordovician Section In East Central Missouri, Morris James Ingerson, Josiah Bridge Jan 1922

The Middle Ordovician Section In East Central Missouri, Morris James Ingerson, Josiah Bridge

Masters Theses

"One of the most serious difficulties confronting anyone working on stratigraphic problems in the Ozark area is the lack of detailed faunal lists of the various formations. A great deal of general work has been done, but very few detailed faunal studies have ever been published, and correlation of the Missouri section with sections in adjoining states is often difficult.

In a recent paper, Dake has discussed the origin and correlation of the St. Peter sandstone. In this study he found considerable difficulty in correlating the various formations above the St. Peter, and at his suggestion, the present study was …

The Hydrogen Ion Concentration In The Liquefaction Of Gelatine, Frederick William Shaw Jan 1921

The Hydrogen Ion Concentration In The Liquefaction Of Gelatine, Frederick William Shaw

Masters Theses

"Gelatine is the most typical of the reversible colloids, a solution containing it being very fluid when hot, but setting to a clear stiff gel on cooling, which again becomes fluid at various temperatures, depending on the concentration of the gelatine"--Introduction, page 1.

Characteristics Of Bacillus Influenzae, Georgena Josephine Clarke Jan 1921

Characteristics Of Bacillus Influenzae, Georgena Josephine Clarke

Masters Theses

"This organism is classed under the type of haemoglobinophilic bacteria, due to the fact that its growth is restricted to a special medium containing haemoglibin [sic]. It is a very small bacillus which in the sputum tends to show itself in aggregations, especially centering about other organisms, M. tetragenus in particular"--page 3.

Glucose From Corn Cobs, Barney Nudelman Jan 1921

Glucose From Corn Cobs, Barney Nudelman

Masters Theses

"The efforts of American chemists in recent years have been devoted largely to the utilization of our waste products...Corn cobs offer a particularly inviting field for research along this line on account of the large supply of cobs available and the variety of substances obtainable from them. One of the leaders in this branch of investigation is Dr. F. B. LaForge of the Chemistry Division of the Bureau of Agriculture, who has contributed numerous papers on the subject. In one of these, in collaboration with C. S. Hudson, he describes, among other things, the preparation of glucose, but recognizes the …

Methyl Amines From Carbinol And Ammonium Chloride, Arthur Mark Howald Jan 1920

Methyl Amines From Carbinol And Ammonium Chloride, Arthur Mark Howald

Masters Theses

"During the spring of 1919 we undertook to prepare tri-methyl-amine for the Research Department of the Eastman Kodak Company in the Industrial Chemistry Laboratory of the Missouri School of Minds. According to V. Merz and K. Gasiorowski the three methyl amines were qualitatively proven to be present in the reaction products obtained by heating methyl alcohol, ammonia and zinc chloride to 220°C. in a bomb for fourteen hours. As these raw materials are inexpensive we attempted to prepare the tri-methyl-amine by this reaction employing for the purpose a small industrial autoclave. Methyl amines were obtained by the yield especially of …

The Cost Of Producing Electricity At The Hamilton, Missouri Light And Power Company, Bernerd William Adams Jan 1916

The Cost Of Producing Electricity At The Hamilton, Missouri Light And Power Company, Bernerd William Adams

Bachelors Theses

"For those seeking information on the cost of producing electricity in steam plants, an unlimited amount of data may be found in the technical journals and text books. This information, however, is obtained from a careful analysis of the daily and hourly records kept by the largest central stations, hence, production costs are available only where the yearly out-put is several million kilowatt-hours. the small isolated stations of from one hundred to two hundred kilowatt capacity have not as a rule, become progressive enough to keep a complete record of operating costs...The test hereinafter reported was conducted from August 3rd. …

Leaching Flue Dust, Edwin Alexander Kayser Jan 1916

Leaching Flue Dust, Edwin Alexander Kayser

Bachelors Theses

"The usual method of treatment has been to charge the "flue dust" into reverberatories and smelt it with the regular charge of calcined ore. There was a consequent cost of handling and a serious loss thru furnace draft and boiling, due to the fine state of division of the material and the presence of sulphates, acid, and moisture.

The object of the paper is to treat this material by some leaching process, which will eliminate the above enumerated losses, and at the same time present the finished product at a lower cost, and with a higher extraction per ton, than …

A Study Of A Certain Filled-Sink Ore Deposit, Azmon Thurman Dunham Jan 1916

A Study Of A Certain Filled-Sink Ore Deposit, Azmon Thurman Dunham

Bachelors Theses

"This mine, which is located about 3-1/2 miles southeast of Sullivan in the extreme northeast corner of Crawford County, Mo., was first known as the Sullivan and Bridoll Mine of the old Hamilton Iron Company. It has been operated discontinuously since about 1870. Until 1904 it was worked solely as an iron mine, but at that time development work for copper was started, and from 1905 to 1909 to mine treated only this metal. It is not known how many pounds of copper the mine has produced, but during one 20 day run in 1904 of which there is record, …

Flotation Applied To Silicate Sludge, Yaro Klepel, Greene Erskine Jan 1916

Flotation Applied To Silicate Sludge, Yaro Klepel, Greene Erskine

Bachelors Theses

"Within the past few years great success has been made of the flotation of sulfids, and to a certain extent of carbonates.

Since sulfids are easily recovered by flotation it seems practicable that silicates could be made to float by first sulfidizing them, and then subjecting them to ordinary flotation treatment.

This problem involves the treatment of a silicate sludge obtained from the Joplin district, the sludge will easily pass through a 250 mesh screen. At the present time this sludge is being sent to the tailings pond.

The experimental work of this thesis was done along the line of …

Some Chemical Problems In Geology, Reginald Scott Dean Jan 1916

Some Chemical Problems In Geology, Reginald Scott Dean

Masters Theses

"This thesis is in the main a compilation of the views held at this institution in regard to the problems discussed as interpreted by the author. No claims for originality are made except in the manner of presentation as the material used has been obtained by conference and class room work with Professor V. H. Gottschalk and Professor G. H. Cox and also to some extent with H. A. Buehler, State Geologist. On the other hand the material is an expression of these ideas as assimilated by the author and hence may in certain cases differ radically from the views …

The Electro Deposition Of Lead In Sugar And Acetate Solutions, Abe Lew Kaplan Jan 1915

The Electro Deposition Of Lead In Sugar And Acetate Solutions, Abe Lew Kaplan

Bachelors Theses

"The experiments, while hardly sufficiently numerous, seemed to indicate that sugars do not have a good effect on cathodic lead deposits"--Conclusion, page 14.

The Electrolysis Of Potassium Lead Tartrate Solutions, Reginald Scott Dean Jan 1915

The Electrolysis Of Potassium Lead Tartrate Solutions, Reginald Scott Dean

Bachelors Theses

"Kahlenberg and Hillyer have shown that lead oxide (PbO) dissolves in neutral potassium tartrate to form a strongly alkaline solution in which the ratio of potassium to lead is 1:1. Since this solution shows a very low concentration of lead ion it might be expected to give a smooth and adherent cathode deposit. The purpose of this thesis is to determine its possible applicability as a refining electrolyte"--page 1.

A Comparison Of Missouri Sandstones, Llewelyn Lodwick Jan 1914

A Comparison Of Missouri Sandstones, Llewelyn Lodwick

Bachelors Theses

"Because of the scarcity of fossils in sandstones, the ages of these stones are difficult to determine except by the fossil bearing rocks either above or below them. Consequently, sandstones, even of the same area, are often separated and correlated with difficulty. It is for this reason that an effort is made to determine a means by which each sandstone may be identified"--Introduction, page 1.

The Determination Of The Critical Sizes In Table Concentration, Julius C. Miller, John N. Webster Jan 1914

The Determination Of The Critical Sizes In Table Concentration, Julius C. Miller, John N. Webster

Bachelors Theses

"It has been observed in table concentration that the ore band consists of the coarest sic particles of ore on the bottom or low side. Further up on this ore band the coarse particles grade into finer particles, until a certain marked degree of fineness is reached by which the mineral can no longer adhere to the table top, but must be carried over by the wash water as slimes. To determine the critical size of ore of practical value which will remain in the concentrates band, under certain variable conditions, is the purport of this thesis"--Object of Experiment, page …

An Investigation In Concentrating A Certain Tailing On Wilfley Tables, Theodore Saunders Dunn, Roy Nicoll Mcbride Jan 1914

An Investigation In Concentrating A Certain Tailing On Wilfley Tables, Theodore Saunders Dunn, Roy Nicoll Mcbride

Bachelors Theses

"The object of this investigation was to determine the adaptibility sic to concentration on a Wilfley table of a certain tailing carrying silver, lead, and zinc. The material was from the tailing dump of the Red Elephant Mine, operated by the Danaher Mining and Milling Company, of Hailey, Idaho, who are now considering treating this material if it can be done economically"--page 2.

Flotation Applied To Basic Ores, Orion Dexter Neal Jan 1914

Flotation Applied To Basic Ores, Orion Dexter Neal

Bachelors Theses

"Concentration, by flotation, as used in to-day is limited to the ores containing an acid gangue. Although, it is probable, that in a few instances flotation schemes are being used on certain ores containing basic gangue, the processes are carefully guarded as trade secrets. It was with ores containing basic gangue that the experiments embodied in this thesis were made, in an effort to determine some means of concentration and also to determine the best conditions for some of the varying factors"--page 1.

The Preservation And Interpretation Of Ripple Marks And Sun Cracks, Donald Hewson Radcliffe Jan 1913

The Preservation And Interpretation Of Ripple Marks And Sun Cracks, Donald Hewson Radcliffe

Bachelors Theses

"The Roubideaux sandstone (Cambrian) which is rather extensively found in the vicinity of Rolla, Mo., offers exceptional opportunities for the study of ripple marks and sun cracks in place. Fig. 1 shows the principal localities in which these structures are to be found in this vicinity.

The statement is made by Van Hise and others that ripple marks can be used in determining structures, and that to do this it is necessary to be able to tell whether a ripple mark is right side up or overturned. The rule as laid down by them is: That a normal ripple mark …

The Measurement Of Mineral Electrode Potentials, John Charavelle Ingram Jan 1913

The Measurement Of Mineral Electrode Potentials, John Charavelle Ingram

Bachelors Theses

"The present investigation was undertaken with a view to consider the variables which tend to cause inaccuracy in the above mentioned measurements and as preliminary to a further study of the subject by the Missouri Bureau of Geology and Mines. The subject is one which, judging from the work of others and from my own experience, will require much more experimentation before results are obtained which are sufficiently reliable for the use of the economic geologist"--Introduction, page 3-4.

Volhard's Volumetric Method For Manganese, John A. Murphy Jan 1913

Volhard's Volumetric Method For Manganese, John A. Murphy

Bachelors Theses

"The purpose of this article and the data contained is an attempt to show how the percentage of manganese varies with different mounts of zinc salt present. It was also intended to determine the ratio of manganese to oxygen and zinc in the brown percipitate sic obtained upon the titration of manganese sulphate against a permanganate solution in the presence of varying quantities of zinc, but through an oversight the data is insufficient for this purpose"--Introduction, page 2.

A Process For The Separation Of Barite And Sphalerite, Cairy C. Conover, Edwin Robinson Morris Jan 1912

A Process For The Separation Of Barite And Sphalerite, Cairy C. Conover, Edwin Robinson Morris

Bachelors Theses

"The present price of zinc has stimulated a greater interest in Sphalerite Barite separations than has been manifested for some time. A great many processes have been worked on and have failed for many reasons, the main one being that the physical characteristics of the ore varied so much. The process that is successful must be independent of these variations. The following process is one that depends on a chemical phenomenon and is adapted to any sphalerite-barite separation. This series of experiments was performed by the authors at the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, Rolla, Mo. and was embodied …

The Determination Of The Settling Velocity Of Certain Minerals Common In Ore-Dressing, Oscar N. Bribach, Robert Winters Johnson Jan 1912

The Determination Of The Settling Velocity Of Certain Minerals Common In Ore-Dressing, Oscar N. Bribach, Robert Winters Johnson

Bachelors Theses

"The object of this thesis is to determine the settling velocity of certain minerals common in ore-dressing work. The minerals used in the experiments were marcasite and chert. These two minerals were chosen because there was a convenient supply of both from which pure and uniform particles could be obtained"--page 4.

Checker Board Drainage Due To Eroded Dikes, Julian Adolph Hielscher Jan 1912

Checker Board Drainage Due To Eroded Dikes, Julian Adolph Hielscher

Bachelors Theses

"The conclusions here drawn are the results of observations made during the past ten summers spent in this region while camping, fishing, and hunting; at first, with the native game wardens and fire rangers; later on independently or in company with some of the many tourists who annually visit this delightful region. In this manner it has been possible to cross and re-cross this territory in almost every direction. The highways into this wilderness are the streams and lakes and the only method of travel is by canoe, though short excursions can be made over land by following the paths …

Some Assay Problems, James Howard Chase Jan 1912

Some Assay Problems, James Howard Chase

Bachelors Theses

"The object of this thesis is to attempt to solve a few of the many problems of assaying. Each problem is handled separately from, and independently of the others"--page 1.

A Study Of The Precipitation Of Iron Di-Sulphide And Its Relation To Certain Types Of Deposits, Vachel Harry Mcnutt Jan 1912

A Study Of The Precipitation Of Iron Di-Sulphide And Its Relation To Certain Types Of Deposits, Vachel Harry Mcnutt

Masters Theses

"Very few of the interesting points bearing upon the formation of iron di-sulphide will be treated in this paper. The laboratory tests made are considered to have been sufficiently thorough to substantiate the ideas set forth so that exhaustive tests were not necessary. While the field evidence was collected largely in the Joplin district of Missouri, the conclusions are sufficiently generalized to be applicable to any district in which pyrite and marcasite have been derived from cold solutions"--page 2.

A Summary Of The Theories Of The Origin Of The Lake Superior Copper Ores, With Evidences Pertaining Thereto, Eva Endurance Hirdler Jan 1911

A Summary Of The Theories Of The Origin Of The Lake Superior Copper Ores, With Evidences Pertaining Thereto, Eva Endurance Hirdler

Bachelors Theses

"In each of the foregoing theories we obtain sound reasoning in connection with many facts. Therefore a correlation of these facts ought to give us enough material to deduct a sound theory. The most plausible supposition seems to be that all metallic ores are derived ultimately from the interior of the earth, from a great metallographic province, when they are delivered by igneous eruptives near or at the surface"--Conclusion With Reasons, page 29.

A Comparison Of The Silver Losses Due To Cupellation Using Different Kinds Of Cupels, James A. Taggart, Anton Frederick Karte Jan 1911

A Comparison Of The Silver Losses Due To Cupellation Using Different Kinds Of Cupels, James A. Taggart, Anton Frederick Karte

Bachelors Theses

"In this thesis our object has been to ascertain the silver losses in cupellation with different kinds of cupel materials, thereby determining the efficiency of the various materials used for making cupels. When beginning this work we hardly expected to find such differences in behavior of the various cupels used. However we refer the reader to our curves to see what really happened"--page 2.
