Oil And Gas Resources, Jackson County, Missouri, Joseph Robinson Clair

Masters Theses

"The oil and gas production in Jackson County, though rather small, is nevertheless of considerable economic importance. A portion of the county has been rather thoroughly developed but the remainder has had little prospecting. In order to aid further development in the region the Missouri Geological Survey engaged in the mapping of all the known wells in the county as a basis for preparing a structural contour map of the area. In addition, a member of the Survey staff is stationed permanently in Kansas City to give assistance to the operators in the region and to collect the logs of …

A Study Of Methods For The Recovery Of Silver, Bromine, Iodine, And Sodium Thiosulfate From Used Photographic Fixing Baths, Leroy Agustave Bay Jan 1937

A Study Of Methods For The Recovery Of Silver, Bromine, Iodine, And Sodium Thiosulfate From Used Photographic Fixing Baths, Leroy Agustave Bay

Masters Theses

"Sodium thiosulfate was one of the pioneer reagents used in photography, and is still the most important reagent used in photographic fixing. The solubility of the silver halides in an excess of sodium thiosulfate makes it important as a reagent for removing the undeveloped silver halides from the film. The life of a fixing bath is controlled by the halogen content. As the ratio of halogens to sodium thiosulfate is increased, the time required for fixing is also increased until the ratio reaches such a point that fogging of the film results. Most of the solutions are discarded long before …

Pyrochemical Changes In Missouri Halloysite, Frank Joseph Zvanut Jan 1937

Pyrochemical Changes In Missouri Halloysite, Frank Joseph Zvanut

Doctoral Dissertations

"For centuries it has been known that the application of heat to a clay or a clay body produces changes that make it an entirely different substance from the original raw clay. Ever since the earliest civilizations produced crude building brick by baking formed clay bodies in the sun's rays, mankind has been speculating on the nature of the changes that convert soft, friable, plastic clays into hard, strong, non-plastic, rock-like masses. It has been only within the last two decades, however, that progress has been made in the solution of problems dealing with the resultant products in fired clay …

A Study Of Methods For Separating The Elements That Interfere In The Electrolytic Deposition Of Lead As Lead Oxide, John Shaw Sabine Jan 1933

A Study Of Methods For Separating The Elements That Interfere In The Electrolytic Deposition Of Lead As Lead Oxide, John Shaw Sabine

Masters Theses

"The electrolytic determination of lead as lead dioxide is a very desirable method, due to its simplicity, accuracy, and the small amount of the analyst's time required. The electrolytic method functions when both large and small amounts of lead are present. The method depends upon the fact that from a nitric acid solution the lead is plated upon the anode as lead dioxide; from the lead dioxide deposit the percentage of lead may be calculated.

An electrolytic method, for determining the lead in samples containing from 5 to 150 mg. of lead, was described in a paper by Schrenk and …

The Preparation And Specific Gravity Of Pure Formic Acid And Its Aqueous Solutions, Leo Henry Merchie Jan 1933

The Preparation And Specific Gravity Of Pure Formic Acid And Its Aqueous Solutions, Leo Henry Merchie

Masters Theses

"Formic acid, the lowest member of the fatty acid series, was obtained as early as the seventeenth century by distilling ants with water. Other methods were later found after the correct constitution of the acid became known. This acid is not difficult to prepare in a water solution, but it is difficult to obtain in the anhydrous state...The purpose of this work is to study the various methods of preparing anhydrous formic acid, to improve a method for preparing the anhydrous acid, and to correct specific gravity tables for aqueous solutions of formic acid"--Introduction, page 1-2.

The physics examination consists of two parts, the Training Series and the Aptitude Series. These examinations …

Revision Of The Jefferson City Formation In The Rolla Quadrangle, James Shelley Cullison Jan 1930

Revision Of The Jefferson City Formation In The Rolla Quadrangle, James Shelley Cullison

Masters Theses

"The geology of the Rolla quadrangle was mapped by Lee in 1912. At that time all the dolomitic strata above the Roubidoux and beneath the Carboniferous formations in this area were placed in the Jefferson City. A more detailed study of the stratigraphy of the whole Ozark region by Ulrich has shown that some of the strata which had been included in the Jefferson City formation on lithologic grounds are not equivalent to the dolomites in the type section at Jefferson City, Missouri"--Introduction, page [1].

Reaction Of Metallic Iron And Copper Sulphate In The Flotation Of Sphalerite, Charles Wilson Ambler Jan 1929

Reaction Of Metallic Iron And Copper Sulphate In The Flotation Of Sphalerite, Charles Wilson Ambler

Masters Theses

"Copper sulphate is a common flotation reagent for blende ores. Metallic iron is also present in the mill circuit and a reaction between the iron and the salt would be in accord with well known chemistry. The abundance of metallic iron in a flotation feed may be noted by the examination of any feed. It originates, first of all, in the mine, then the coarse crushing machines contribute their share, and finally the fine grinding medium is a large contributor. If the grinding is with cast iron balls in amount of metallics is greater than when steel is used. In …

A Study Of Ball Mills, Robert Lee Kidd Jan 1929

A Study Of Ball Mills, Robert Lee Kidd

Masters Theses

"The study of the ball mill is very complicated, due to the varying conditions existing in the mill. Some of these conditions are: Size of grinding media, size of feed, moisture content, and speed with its effect on the paths of the grinding media. A brief history of fine grinding will first be outlines, after which some of the theories of ball milling will be stated. Then the paths of the grinding media will be given some attention, and a new point of view about the trajectory will be brought out"--Introduction, page 2.

The Preparation Of Certain Inorganic And Organic Compounds Which May Be Of Use In Mineralogical Separations, Clarence Jay Black Jan 1928

The Preparation Of Certain Inorganic And Organic Compounds Which May Be Of Use In Mineralogical Separations, Clarence Jay Black

Masters Theses

"In the work with minerals, there has been many mechanical means devised whereby the ores could be separated from the gangue and other material. Among those means which are used to-day, especially in the laboratory tests upon minerals, to quickly determine the value of an ore, heavy liquids have become quite popular. This means of mechanical separation is merely to place finely ground ore containing particles of varying density into a liquid of heavier density than the greater portion of the mineral, which will allow the heavier portions to sink and the lighter to float, which is usually gangue. This …

"In the retort smelting of zinc ores one of the chief metallurgical problems is to obtain as complete a reduction of the zinc as is consistent with economical operation. Among the factors influencing the completeness of reduction are the temperature and time of distillation, the form in which the zinc exists in the ore, the form of carbon used as reducer, and the size of the particles or ore and reducer"--Introduction, page 1.

Effect Of Various Factors On The Rate Of Reduction Of Zinc Ferrite, Calamine, And Willemite By Carbon, Foster Cary Nix Jan 1925

Effect Of Various Factors On The Rate Of Reduction Of Zinc Ferrite, Calamine, And Willemite By Carbon, Foster Cary Nix

Masters Theses

"Zinc ores containing large amounts of ferric oxide, calamine and willemite have been known for a long time among practical zinc metallurgists to be more difficult to reduce than ores of the same type but free from the above named compounds. This has been thought to be due to the high temperatures necessary for the reduction of the zinc ferrite and the zinc silicates by carbon. The ferrite is formed both during the roasting of sulphide ores and during distillation in the retorts, while calamine and willemite are introduced as such in the ores. The amount of ferrite formed during …

The Disintegration Of Refractory Brick By Carbon Monoxide, Wilbur J. Darby Jan 1923
