Electron Beam Emission From A Ferroelectric Cathode, Crystal Briana Garland Apr 1996

Electron Beam Emission From A Ferroelectric Cathode, Crystal Briana Garland

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The electron beam emission from a LTZ-2 (lead titanate-zirconate) ferroelectric cathode was characterized. The purpose was to determine the operation range for this type of electron emitter. The experimental apparatus consisted of a high voltage driving circuit with a charging voltage up to 30kV. A solid-state SCR switch is used to generate the high voltage pulse which induces a polarization change. Current densities on the order of 80A/cm2 30kV were achieved. The electron beam profile is Guassian. At long anode-cathode distances the measured current densities were found to be above Child-Langmuir space charge limits. The large current densities and …

Visibility-Related Problems On Parallel Computational Models, Himabindu Gurla Apr 1996

Visibility-Related Problems On Parallel Computational Models, Himabindu Gurla

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

Visibility-related problems find applications in seemingly unrelated and diverse fields such as computer graphics, scene analysis, robotics and VLSI design. While there are common threads running through these problems, most existing solutions do not exploit these commonalities. With this in mind, this thesis identifies these common threads and provides a unified approach to solve these problems and develops solutions that can be viewed as template algorithms for an abstract computational model. A template algorithm provides an architecture independent solution for a problem, from which solutions can be generated for diverse computational models. In particular, the template algorithms presented in this …

Speech Feature Computation For Visual Speech Articulation Training, Stefan Auberg Apr 1996

Speech Feature Computation For Visual Speech Articulation Training, Stefan Auberg

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A new version of the Visual Speech Articulation Training Aid was implemented which provides real-time visual feedback for speech articulation training. This version was migrated to a Windows Multimedia PC from a previous version which used a Personal Computer (PC) system and additional specialized and expensive custom hardware. This new version will make the system more available to schools and private users. A new method was developed for computing spectral/temporal features which characterize the speech sounds. In addition to the typical frame-based spectral analysis parameters, the new method represents temporal changes of the spectrum with a small number of features. …

Recruitment Of Blue Crab, Callinectes Sapidus, Postlarvae To The Back-Barrier Lagoons Of Virginia's Eastern Shore, Robert D. Brumbaugh Apr 1996

Recruitment Of Blue Crab, Callinectes Sapidus, Postlarvae To The Back-Barrier Lagoons Of Virginia's Eastern Shore, Robert D. Brumbaugh

OES Theses and Dissertations

Most research on the early life history of the blue crab, Callinectes sapidus, has been conducted in large partially stratified estuaries such as the Chesapeake Bay. In contrast, little is known about the recruitment dynamics or habitat requirements of blue crab postlarvae (megalopae) in shallow well-mixed lagoonal systems that make up a considerable part of the species' range. In Virginia's coastal lagoons, planktonic blue crab megalopae are most abundant at night on flooding tides, and are not abundant during the daytime or on ebbing tides. This appears to enhance retention within the lagoons, despite the short residence time of water …

The Effects Of Environmental Variability On The Population Structure Of The Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea Virginica): A Modeling Study, Margaret Mcmanus Dekshenieks Apr 1996

The Effects Of Environmental Variability On The Population Structure Of The Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea Virginica): A Modeling Study, Margaret Mcmanus Dekshenieks

OES Theses and Dissertations

Three models were coupled to investigate the effects of changes in environmental conditions on the population structure of the Eastern oyster, Crassostrea virginica. The first model, a time-dependent model of the oyster population as described in Powell et al. (1992) and Hofmann et al. (1992, 1995), tracks the distribution, development, spawning, and mortality of sessile oyster populations. The post-settlement model incorporates mortality through parasitism, predation, food depletion and extremes in environmental conditions. The post-settlement model supplies the initial abundance of larvae spawned into the water column, and in turn is the recipient of cohorts of spawn which survive through metamorphosis. …

Seasonal And Mesoscale Variability In The Distribution Of Antarctic Krill, Euphausia Superba, West Of The Antarctic Peninsula, Cathy Meyer Lascara Apr 1996

Seasonal And Mesoscale Variability In The Distribution Of Antarctic Krill, Euphausia Superba, West Of The Antarctic Peninsula, Cathy Meyer Lascara

OES Theses and Dissertations

Observations collected between November 1991 and September 1993 during four multidisciplinary cruises were analyzed to provide a description of seasonal and mesoscale variability in the distribution and abundance of Antarctic krill, Euphausia superba, within continental shelf waters west of the Antarctic Peninsula and to investigate possible relationships between variability in krill distributions and variability in selected environmental parameters. Acoustic measurements of krill were made each season at designated locations to estimate the abundance of krill, in terms of vertically-integrated krill biomass and the number of aggregations, characterize the depth distribution of krill, and provide a quantitative description of the size, …

Factors Affecting Nitrogen Fixation Rates In Termites (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae: Reticulitermes) And Termite Nitrogen Contributions Of Forest Ecosystems, Anthony Duane Curtis Apr 1996

Factors Affecting Nitrogen Fixation Rates In Termites (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae: Reticulitermes) And Termite Nitrogen Contributions Of Forest Ecosystems, Anthony Duane Curtis

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Termites host symbiotic bacteria that fix atmospheric nitrogen, which makes termites important in the biogeochemical cycling of nitrogen in ecosystems. The objective of this study was to estimate annual nitrogen contributions by termites by examining seasonal rates of nitrogen fixation, seasonal abundance of different termite castes and their nitrogenase activity, the effects of dietary nitrogen on nitrogenase activity, and low oxygen and high carbon dioxide atmospheres on termite nitrogenase activity, and the accuracy of mark-recapture studies to estimate termite population size.

Termite nitrogen fixation rates were monitored monthly for 10 Reticulitermes Holmgren colonies from June, 1993, to December, 1995. Rates …

Petrochemical Analysis By Remote Fiber-Optic Raman Spectroscopy And Partial Least Squares Regression Analysis, Philip Edmund Flecher Jr. Apr 1996

Petrochemical Analysis By Remote Fiber-Optic Raman Spectroscopy And Partial Least Squares Regression Analysis, Philip Edmund Flecher Jr.

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

A dispersive Raman system with charge coupled device (CCD) detection, distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) diode laser excitation, and a fiber optic probe has been developed for the rapid analysis of petrochemicals and fuels. Initially, mock petroleum fuels with analyte concentrations from 1.S - 16% were prepared and analyzed with the system. The inability of the original index guided diode laser to maintain a constant frequency during the mock petroleum analysis was a recurrent problem. The DBR laser was subsequently shown to have stability superior to index guided lasers, and was used in the remainder of the research.

Real gasoline samples …

Frequency Response Enhancement Of A Flow Sensor Using Diamond Thin Films Synthesized By Plasma Cvd, John Curren Hagwood Apr 1996

Frequency Response Enhancement Of A Flow Sensor Using Diamond Thin Films Synthesized By Plasma Cvd, John Curren Hagwood

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Theoretical modeling conducted previously in our Microelectronics Laboratory has shown that a layer of diamond film inserted between a metal film and a substrate will enhance the frequency response of a conventional thin film flow sensor. This thesis involved fabricating and testing a conventional thin film sensor of nickel on quartz (Ni/Q) and a diamond enhanced sensor (Ni/D/Q) for comparative frequency response analysis to validate the theory. Diamond films were grown onto quartz substrates using a microwave plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition process. Conditions were established to synthesize continuous diamond films on quartz substrates. These films were characterized by scanning …

Comparison Of Sapling Community Structure In Created And Natural Forested Wetlands In Southeastern Virginia, Sharon Ann Haines Apr 1996

Comparison Of Sapling Community Structure In Created And Natural Forested Wetlands In Southeastern Virginia, Sharon Ann Haines

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Forested wetlands are being destroyed at a rapid rate. Wetlands are valuable for flood control, aquifer recharge, and for their role in denitrification and storage of global carbon. When wetlands are lost, their functions and value to humans are lost as well. One response to the continued development of wetlands has been the artificial creation of new wetlands. This study compared the species density, relative density, coverage and frequency of occurrence of the woody vegetation in two southeastern Virginia created wetlands with that in two reference wetlands, also in southeastern Virginia, to determine the structural similarity of their respective communities. …

A One-Dimensional Model For Storm Breaching Of Barrier Islands, Cheol Shik Shin Apr 1996

A One-Dimensional Model For Storm Breaching Of Barrier Islands, Cheol Shik Shin

Civil & Environmental Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A set of numerical models is developed for simulating the four stages of barrier breaching characterized by one horizontal spatial dimension.

The SBEACH model is employed for the first stage of dune/beach erosion. The Lax-Wendroff two-step explicit scheme for Stage II is developed to simulate initiation of ocean flood propagation on initially dry barrier islands and the method of characteristics (MOC), is employed to compute additional boundary data. The development of the Preissmann implicit scheme for water motion and a forward time centered space explicit scheme for sediment motion in Stages III and IV provide a tool to study the …

Pion Absorption On Polarized Lithium-7 At 165 Mev, Thomas A. Greco Apr 1996

Pion Absorption On Polarized Lithium-7 At 165 Mev, Thomas A. Greco

Physics Theses & Dissertations

Pion absorption is not well understood. Cross section data alone does not provide a complete description since the cross section tends to be sensitive only to the spin-independent terms in the transition amplitude. Polarization observables are thus necessary to complete the picture. In this experiment, analyzing powers for the reaction 7→Li(π+,pp)5He at Tπ = 165 MeV were measured at the Paul Scherrer Institut, Switzerland. The emitted protons were detected with the SUSI spectrometer at 38° in coincidence with an array of five scintillator telescopes centered around the quasi-free angle for absorption on a nucleon …

Two-Photon Quantum Interference Polarization Spectroscopy: Measurements Of Transition Matrix Elements In Atomic Rubidium, Alexander I. Beger Apr 1996

Two-Photon Quantum Interference Polarization Spectroscopy: Measurements Of Transition Matrix Elements In Atomic Rubidium, Alexander I. Beger

Physics Theses & Dissertations

The estimation of the adequacy of theoretical calculations on the atomic structure requires availability of the precise experimental data on radiative properties of the atoms. Such data is also required in astronomy and some important areas of technology. The lack of precision of traditional spectroscopic studies of atom presents a fundamental obstacle for progress in these areas. For example, in atomic rubidium, the best precision of the traditional spectroscopic results is on the order of about 1 - 5%, which does not allow for clear assessment of the latest sophisticated theoretical calculations on atomic rubidium structure, with emphasis on different, …

Gamma-Ray Optical Studies Of ⁷³Ge And ⁵⁷Fe, Walter Carlton Mcdermott Iii Apr 1996

Gamma-Ray Optical Studies Of ⁷³Ge And ⁵⁷Fe, Walter Carlton Mcdermott Iii

Physics Theses & Dissertations

The research described herein is among the first attempts to test one of the more popular theories for development of a gamma-ray laser. This work is a "marriage" between the Borrmann effect, which is a consequence of the dynamical theory of x-ray diffraction, and time-filtering which comes from time-domain Mossbauer spectroscopy.

Our experiments involved the search for a nuclear Borrmann effect and the subsequent time-filtering effect using 57Fe and 73Ge. In both cases, no nuclear Borrmann effect was observed; however, the methodology and criteria necessary for such an observation with any isotope were documented. The procedures necessary for …

Exact Solutions For Orthogonal And Non-Orthogonal Magnetohydrodynamic Stagnation-Point Flow, Shahrooz Moosavizadeh Apr 1996

Exact Solutions For Orthogonal And Non-Orthogonal Magnetohydrodynamic Stagnation-Point Flow, Shahrooz Moosavizadeh

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

The viscous plane flow of an electrically conducting fluid towards an infinite wall is solved in the presence of a magnetic field which is aligned with the flow far from the wall. The problem has two dimensionless parameters-- ε, the magnetic Prandtl number, and β, the square of the ratio of Alfven velocity to fluid velocity far from the wall. The problem has a similarity solution which reduces the governing equations to a system of coupled ordinary differential equations which can be solved numerically. For extreme values of ε, both large and small, singular perturbation techniques are used to derive …

Linear Models For Multivariate Repeated Measures Data, Shantha S. Rao Apr 1996

Linear Models For Multivariate Repeated Measures Data, Shantha S. Rao

Mathematics & Statistics Theses & Dissertations

In this dissertation we focus mainly on the analysis of continuous multivariate repeated measurements data based on the assumption of multivariate normality. However certain aspects of the analysis of univariate repeated measures data are also considered. Typically, we have measurements on p variables (possibly correlated) in the form of px1 vectors yijk observed at k = 1,2, ...,tij occasions on j = 1,2, ..., ni individuals from i = 1,2, ..., g groups. We assume a naturally occurring covariance structure Vij ⊗ ∑ among the p variables on the jth individual from ith group …

Spectroscopy Of Atoms Confined To The Single Node Of A Standing Wave In A Parallel-Plate Cavity, V. Sandoghar, C. I. Sukenik, S. Haroche, E. A. Hinds Mar 1996

Spectroscopy Of Atoms Confined To The Single Node Of A Standing Wave In A Parallel-Plate Cavity, V. Sandoghar, C. I. Sukenik, S. Haroche, E. A. Hinds

Physics Faculty Publications

We have performed spectroscopy on sodium atoms that are optically channeled in the single node of a laser standing wave set up across a parallel-plate cavity. Using this technique we have extended our previous measurement of the Lennard-Jones van der Waals energy-level shift [Sandoghdar et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 68, 3432 (1992)] down to a cavity width of ~500 nm. We discuss the applications of this technique to the precise measurement of atom-surface distances.

Effects Of Vascularization On Lymphocyte/Tumor Cell Dynamics: Qualitative Features, J. A. Adam Mar 1996

Effects Of Vascularization On Lymphocyte/Tumor Cell Dynamics: Qualitative Features, J. A. Adam

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

By adapting a pre-existing model to include the effects of vascularization within a tumor or multicell spheroid, a predator-prey system describing the cell populations of a solid tumor and reactive lymphocytes is formulated. The paper serves as a review of the minimal deterministic approach to tumor-host immune system interactions while examining, in a qualitative manner, the modifications to the dynamics induced by a simple representation of the vascularized tumor. In addition, the possibility of limit-cycle behavior is studied by regarding each of six parameters present in the model as a bifurcation parameter. Thus, in principle, well-defined and periodic oscillations in …

A System For Structured Management Of Hypermedia Resources For The World Wide Web, Kevin L. Marlowe Mar 1996

A System For Structured Management Of Hypermedia Resources For The World Wide Web, Kevin L. Marlowe

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

The World Wide Web (WWW) is arguably the preferred method for disseminating information across the Internet. Most of the work to support the advancement of WWW technology has focused on servers used in storing and retrieving information, browsers for viewing this information, and editors or filters for creating the information.

One area which has received little attention is that of actually managing this information at the local host. This thesis describes the development of a means for organizing local data prior to its publishing on the WWW, a method for gathering local pages together and preparing them for distribution, and …

Circulation Near Submarine Canyons: A Modeling Study, John M. Klinck Jan 1996

Circulation Near Submarine Canyons: A Modeling Study, John M. Klinck

CCPO Publications

Circulation near a submarine canyon is analyzed with a numerical model. Previous theoretical work indicated that stratification controlled the interaction of coastal flow with canyons, specifically, the ratio of canyon width to the internal radius of deformation. A wide canyon was thought to merely steer the flow, while a narrow canyon would create substantial cross-shelf exchange. Four cases are analyzed considering two directions of alongshore flow and two choices of initial stratification. The weakly stratified case has an internal radius about equal to the canyon width, while the strongly stratified case has one about 3 times the canyon width. The …

Modeling The Vertical Distribution Of Oyster Larvae In Response To Environmental Conditions, Margaret M. Dekshenieks, Eileen E. Hofmann, John M. Klinck, Eric N. Powell Jan 1996

Modeling The Vertical Distribution Of Oyster Larvae In Response To Environmental Conditions, Margaret M. Dekshenieks, Eileen E. Hofmann, John M. Klinck, Eric N. Powell

CCPO Publications

A size-structured, time and vertically-dependent model was used to investigate the effects of water column structure on the distribution of larvae of the oyster Crassostrea virginica. Formulations used to model larval growth and behavior are based upon laboratory studies. Simulated vertical larval distributions obtained for conditions representative of a well-mixed, partially stratified and strongly stratified water column illustrate the effect that salinity and temperature gradients have on moderating larval swimming and hence on larvae vertical location. For well-mixed conditions, smaller larvae are dispersed throughout most of the water column. For strongly stratified conditions, the smaller-sized larvae cluster within the …

On A Conjecture Of S. Reich, Peter Z. Daffer, Hideaki Kaneko, Wu Li Jan 1996

On A Conjecture Of S. Reich, Peter Z. Daffer, Hideaki Kaneko, Wu Li

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

Simeon Reich (1974) proved that the fixed point theorem for single-valued mappings proved by Boyd and Wong can be generalized to multivalued mappings which map points into compact sets. He then asked (1983) whether his theorem can be extended to multivalued mappings whose range consists of bounded closed sets. In this note, we provide an affirmative answer for a certain subclass of Boyd-Wong contractive mappings.

Microhollow Cathode Discharges, K. H. Schoenbach, R. Verhappen, R. Tessnow, F. E. Peterkin, W. W. Byszewski Jan 1996

Microhollow Cathode Discharges, K. H. Schoenbach, R. Verhappen, R. Tessnow, F. E. Peterkin, W. W. Byszewski

Bioelectrics Publications

The current–voltage characteristics of hollow cathode discharges and their predischarges in argon under dc and pulsed conditions were found to have a positive slope at pressures up to approximately 50 Torr, and currents up to 20 mA, at a hole diameter of 0.7 mm. In this range of pressure and current, parallel operation of hollow cathode discharges, without ballast, was demonstrated. Scaling to higher pressure is possible by reducing the hole diameter. Pulsed experiments with an array of cathode rings of 75 μm diameter allowed us to obtain parallel operation of more than 50 discharges at a pressure of 350 …

The neutron longitudinal and transverse asymmetries A1n and A2n have been extracted from deep inelastic scattering of polarized electrons by a polarized 3He target at incident energies of 19.42, 22.66, and 25.51 GeV. The measurement allows for the determination of the neutron spin structure functions g1n (x,Q2) and g2n(x,Q2) over the range 0.032 of 2 (GeV/c)2. The data are used for the evaluation of the Ellis-Jaffe and Bjorken sum rules. The neutron spin structure function g1n(x,Q2) is small and …

Q² Evolution Of Chiral-Odd Twist-3 Distributions HL(𝓍, Q²) And E(𝓍, Q²) In Large- NC Qcd, I.I. Balitsky, V. M. Braun, K. Koike, K. Tanaka Jan 1996

Q² Evolution Of Chiral-Odd Twist-3 Distributions HL(𝓍, Q²) And E(𝓍, Q²) In Large- NC Qcd, I.I. Balitsky, V. M. Braun, K. Koike, K. Tanaka

Physics Faculty Publications

We prove that the twist-3 chiral-odd parton distributions obey simple Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi evolution equations in the limit Nc → ∞ and give analytic results for the corresponding anomalous dimensions. To this end we introduce an evolution equation for the corresponding three-particle twist-3 parton correlation functions and find an exact analytic solution. For large values of n (operator dimension) we are further able to collect all corrections subleading in Nc, so our final results are valid to O((1/N2c)ln(n)/n) accuracy

The inclusive A(e,e') cross section for x≃1 was measured on 2H, C, Fe, and Au for momentum transfers Q2 from 1 to 6.8 (GeV/c)2. The scaling behavior of the data was examined in the region of transition from y scaling to x scaling. Throughout this transitional region, the data exhibit ξ scaling, reminiscent of the Bloom-Gilman duality seen in free nucleon scattering.

A Coupled, Non-Linear, Steady State Model For Early Diagenetic Processes In Pelagic Sediments, Surya P. Dhakar, David J. Burdige Jan 1996

A Coupled, Non-Linear, Steady State Model For Early Diagenetic Processes In Pelagic Sediments, Surya P. Dhakar, David J. Burdige

OES Faculty Publications

A steady state, coupled, non-linear model has been developed for early diagenetic processes in pelagic and hemi-pelagic marine sediments. Model results show that the occurrence of oxic and sub-oxic diagenetic processes is significantly affected by variations in parameters such as the sedimentation rate, bioturbation coefficient, sediment porosity, and organic matter flux to the sediments. Increases in the sedimentation rate or the bioturbation coefficient increase organic matter oxidation by sub-oxic processes, whereas an increase in sediment porosity decreases organic matter oxidation by sub-oxic processes. Sediment data from three contrasting MANOP sites are fit reasonably well with the model. The resulting best-fit …

Superconvergence Of The Iterated Galerkin Methods For Hammerstein Equations, Hideaki Kaneko, Yuesheng Xu Jan 1996

Superconvergence Of The Iterated Galerkin Methods For Hammerstein Equations, Hideaki Kaneko, Yuesheng Xu

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications

In this paper, the well-known iterated Galerkin method and iterated Galerkin-Kantorovich regularization method for approximating the solution of Fredholm integral equations of the second kind are generalized to Hammerstein equations with smooth and weakly singular kernels. The order of convergence of the Galerkin method and those of superconvergence of the iterated methods are analyzed. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the superconvergence of the iterated Galerkin approximation for Hammerstein equations with weakly singular kernels. © 1996, Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics
