Geology Of The Breitenbush Hot Springs Area, Cascade Range, Oregon, Clifford Michael Clayton Jan 1976

Geology Of The Breitenbush Hot Springs Area, Cascade Range, Oregon, Clifford Michael Clayton

Dissertations and Theses

The Breitenbush Hot Springs area lies on the boundary of folded middle to late Tertiary Western Cascade rocks and younger High Cascade rocks. Within the mapped area the Western Cascade rocks are represented by four formations. The Detroit Beds, a sequence of interstratified tuffaceous sandstone, mudflow breccia, and tuff, is overlain unconformably by the Breitenbush Tuff. The Breitenbush Tuff consists of three units of welded pumice-rich crystal-vitric ash-flow tuffs interbedded with tuffaceous sedimentary rocks. The Outerson Formation unconformably overlies the Breitenbush Tuff and consists primarily of basaltic lava and breccia.

The Outerson Formation includes three localized members: a basal, glassy, …

Polymerization Of Amino Acids On Kaolinite, Z. Badri Adnani-Gleason Jan 1976

Polymerization Of Amino Acids On Kaolinite, Z. Badri Adnani-Gleason

Dissertations and Theses

In the origin of life on the primitive earth a major step must have involved the condensation of amino acids to form the first polypeptides. Several suggestions as to how this might have occurred have been made by other workers. One of the more appealing proposals is that the polymerization was catalyzed by clay minerals. It has been reported, for example, that L-apartic acid polymerizes significantly faster than D-aspartic in the presence of kaolinite in aqueous suspension at 90˚. In this work an attempt was made to repeat this report and extend the pH range to include values presumably present …

The Dynamics Of An Hcp Crystal With A Substitutional Defect, Pramod C. Karulkar Jun 1975

The Dynamics Of An Hcp Crystal With A Substitutional Defect, Pramod C. Karulkar

Dissertations and Theses

We examine the problem of the dynamics of a hexagonal close packed crystal with a single substitutional impurity. The effects of the mass and the force constant changes due to the introduction of the impurity atom are taken into account assuming nearest neighbor interactions under the harmonic approximation. Using Green’s function and group theoretical methods, the equations of motion for the perturbed normal modes are obtained in an exact form. The calculations are performed by allowing for very general force constant changes which can have noncentral as well as central contributions. Further, by assuming central forces, we simplify the equations …

The Effect Of Human Activity On The Middle Course Of The Tualatin River, Oregon, Lolita M. Carter May 1975

The Effect Of Human Activity On The Middle Course Of The Tualatin River, Oregon, Lolita M. Carter

Dissertations and Theses

A diurnal study of biological, chemical, and physical parameters was made on the middle course of the, Tualatin River, which drains a 1840 km2 (711 mi2) basin adjacent to metropolitan Portland, Oregon. This portion of the river lies along land in transition of use from rural agriculture to highly urbanized development.

There is no nutrient loading of the river from farming practices because there was no return of water from summer, sprinkler irrigation of commercial crops. However, irrigation significantly reduces the volume of water in the river in the summers.

Effluents from sewage treatment plants flowing into …

The Development Of An Arsenic(V) Selective Electrode, Sandra Gee Kang Nov 1974

The Development Of An Arsenic(V) Selective Electrode, Sandra Gee Kang

Dissertations and Theses

The object of this research was to develop an arsenic(V) selective electrode. The electrode is based on a solid state membrane prepared by pressing a precipitate of silver arsenate-silver sulfide into a pellet. After the electrode was made, experiments were designed to check for three general characteristics of the electrodes: dependence of potential on pH for constant arsenic(V) concentration; dependence of potential on arsenic(V) concentrations at constant pH and extent of interference due to phosphate and arsenic(III) ions. From these measurements, it was found that Ag2HAs04 was formed originally in the membranes containing a small fraction of …

Characterization Of Zinc-Containing Metalloproteins By Resonance Raman Spectroscopy, Robert Edward Derry Sep 1974

Characterization Of Zinc-Containing Metalloproteins By Resonance Raman Spectroscopy, Robert Edward Derry

Dissertations and Theses

Cobalt-substituted carboxypeptidase and carbonic anhydrase were chosen as candidates for resonance Raman spectroscopy because they possess visible absorption due to the Co(II)-protein complex. However, no evidence for resonance-enhanced peaks due to the cobalt-containing chromophore was found with laser excitation near the visible absorption bands (514.5 nm) or closer to the ultraviolet absorption bands (457.9nm).

Arsanilazocarboxypeptidase and model azotyrosine compounds were selected for a Raman spectroscopic investigation because they have intense absorption bands in the visible region. All of these substances yielded similar resonance Raman spectra. Although there was no evidence for specific zinc-ligand vibrations, shifts in vibrational frequencies of the …

Alumina-Catalyzed Cope Rearrangement, Paul Jhy-Shing Wang Aug 1974

Alumina-Catalyzed Cope Rearrangement, Paul Jhy-Shing Wang

Dissertations and Theses

The alumina-catalyzed Cope rearrangements of meso- and dl-3,4-diphenylhexa-1,5-diene were examined in detail, following up a preliminary observation by H. Berg at Portland State University. Commercial column-chromatography grade alumina was employed, and was further activated before use by heating at 650-700° for four hours.

Using a ratio of 20 mg of dl-3,4-diphenylhex-l,5-diene to 1 g of alumina in heptane, the Cope rearrangement was complete within 15 minutes at room temperature to give exclusively trans,trans-1,6-diphenylhexa-1,5-diene. This was identified.by melting point, infrared spectroscopy and vapor phase chromatography.

The catalyzed rearrangement of meso-3,4-diphenylhexa-l,5-diene was run using the same diene …

The Effects Of Pentachlorophenol On The Electrical Conductivity Of Lipid Bilayer Membranes, William Harvey Perman Aug 1974

The Effects Of Pentachlorophenol On The Electrical Conductivity Of Lipid Bilayer Membranes, William Harvey Perman

Dissertations and Theses

The effects of pentachlorophenol (PCP), a widely used pesticide, on the electrical characteristics of lipid bilayer membranes has been studied. When a small amount of PCP (even at a concentration of a few micromoles per liter) is present in the electrolytic solution surrounding the membrane, the electrical conductivity of the membrane significantly increases. The present work was concerned with detailed measurements of the changes in the conductivity caused by PCP under chemically controlled conditions. The experimental results were analyzed to determine the permanent species in the membrane, and an attempt was made to correlate the data with existing models of …

On The Reduction Of Many-Body Dielectric Theories To The Onsager Equation, John D. Ramshaw Aug 1974

On The Reduction Of Many-Body Dielectric Theories To The Onsager Equation, John D. Ramshaw

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

An approximate theory for the dielectric constant ℇ of a dense polar fluid was derived by Ramshaw, Schaefer, Waugh, and Deutch (RSWD). In the present article, the RSWD theory is generalized and made rigorous by another method of derivation. The result is a rigorous expression for ℇ which differs from the RSWD expression by the presence of a fluctuation term. Both the rigorous expression and the RSWD expression are then specialized to the Onsager model. It is found that the rigorous expression for ℇ reduces to the Onsager equation, but that the RSWD expression does not because the fluctuation term …

Probability Driven Heuristic Nets, Lynn Robert Carter Jul 1974

Probability Driven Heuristic Nets, Lynn Robert Carter

Dissertations and Theses

Let a probability driven switch be defined as a switch of three input paths and three output paths. The status of the input paths defines a probability for each output path (as to whether it will generate a signal or not.) One output path is linked to one input path, so the results of the switch at time t can affect the switch at time t+1. A switch so constructed can be defined (by the probabilities) to take on the function of the standard logic gates (AND, OR, …) A net constructed of these switches can be “taught” by …

Water Quality Within East Portland Terraces, Fouad Mohamed Tawfik May 1974

Water Quality Within East Portland Terraces, Fouad Mohamed Tawfik

Dissertations and Theses

Groundwater from thirty-three wells which are randomly distributed within 42 square miles of the residential, agricultural and industrial area of East Portland Terraces have been analyzed. The area is moderately wet with an annual precipitation of about 37 inches. Residual and transported sediments from different sources, dominantly volcanic, comprise the subsurface lithology. The sedimentary units that were deposited by means of rivers and lakes have filled an original structural and erosional valley in the area. This relatively unconsolidated valley filling is about 900 feet of predominantly lenticular, stratified and cross-bedded lenses of clay, silt, sand, gravel, cobbles and boulders.

The …

Heat Transfer Across Carbon - Liquid Helium I Interface, Constantine Antonopoulos May 1974

Heat Transfer Across Carbon - Liquid Helium I Interface, Constantine Antonopoulos

Dissertations and Theses

Carbon samples were electrically heated while immersed in liquid helium I. Their temperature rise was observed on an oscilloscope as a function of the time after the onset of the electric current. There was no indication of the temperature overshoot previously reported for the case of bismuth in liquid helium.

Reasons are presented for the difference in behavior of carbon and bismuth.

Vibration Damping Characteristics Of Typical Harpsichord Strings, Jack Lee Simmons May 1974

Vibration Damping Characteristics Of Typical Harpsichord Strings, Jack Lee Simmons

Dissertations and Theses

Present-day builders of harpsichords disagree as to the use of iron or carbon-steel wire in their attempt to duplicate the tonal qualities of the early 16th century instruments. The variations in tone produced by vibrating iron and steel wires may be due, at least in part, to differences in their decay characteristics. A wire was set into vibration by placing a section in a magnetic field and passing a variable-frequency alternating current through it. A condition of resonance was established by appropriately selecting frequencies, lengths, and tensions that would simultaneously satisfy the relationship: fr = n/2L(T/p)1/2. Then measurements of decay …

Column chromatography was used for the separation of the extract based …

A Study Of The Adsorption Of Some Atmospheric Gases On Soils Of The Willamette Valley River Basin, Thomas R. Quale Dec 1973

A Study Of The Adsorption Of Some Atmospheric Gases On Soils Of The Willamette Valley River Basin, Thomas R. Quale

Dissertations and Theses

Recent work indicates that microorganisms present in soils can remove carbon monoxide from the atmosphere and as such constitutes a major sink. B.E.T. adsorption studies were carried out on representative soils from the Willamette Valley River Basin in order to determine their adsorptive characteristics for carbon monoxide and other gases. Attempts were made to isolate, through a non-soildestructive sterilization, the adsorptive characteristics of the soil microorganisms as well as of the test soil.

The carbon monoxide studies show physical adsorption equivalent to the coverage of a few per cent of the surface area at 25.0° and 76 cm-Hg. Adsorption studies …
