Studies of amplification and/or overexpression of c-myc, HER-2/neu, and H-ras in breast cancer have shown that each is associated with a poor prognosis. The purpose of this study was to explore the possibility that there is a preferred sequence of amplification of these oncogenes in breast cancer. The frequencies of amplification and patterns of co-amplification of c-myc, HER-2/neu, and H-ras were studied in a group of 84 breast cancers. The data suggested a preferred sequence of amplification that consisted of c-myc amplification-HER-2/neu amplification-H-ras amplification. This model was supported by loglinear analysis. In addition, the levels of amplification of JC-A, a …

Aids Epidemiology: A Quantitative Approach, Ron Brookmeyer, Mitchell Gail

This comprehensive work confronts the problems that are unique to AIDS research and unites them under a single conceptual framework. It focuses on methods for the design and analysis of epidemiologic studies, the natural history of AIDS and the transmission of HIV, methods for tracking and projecting the course of the epidemic, and statistical issues in therapeutic trials. The various methods of monitoring and forecasting this disease receive comprehensive treatment. These methods include back-calculation, which the authors developed; interpretation of survey data on HIV prevalence; mathematical models for HIV transmission; and approaches that combine different types of epidemiological data. Much …

Gregory McColm conjectured that positive elementary inductions are bounded in a class K of finite structures if every (FO + LFP) formula is equivalent to a first-order formula in K. Here (FO + LFP) is the extension of first-order logic with the least fixed point operator. We disprove the conjecture. Our main results are two model-theoretic constructions, one deterministic and the other randomized, each of which refutes McColm’s conjecture.

Evidence For A Disk In The Wind Of Hd 93521: Uv Line Profiles From An Axisymmetric Model., Richard Ignace

Recently it has been suggested (Massa 1992; Howarth & Reid 1993), from the C IV ultraviolet resonance line profile of HD 93521, that there is a high-speed component in the polar outflow from the star as well as a low-speed component in the equatorial regions. In this paper we present theoretical calculations of the line profiles that would be produced by such a model. We find from Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph (GHRS) observations of HD 93521 that the observed C IV profile can be produced if the star has an inclination angle very close to 90 …

X-Ray Studies Of Bond-Orientational Order In Liquid-Crystalline Orthogonal Hexatic-B Phase, E. Gorecka, Li Chen, Oleg Lavrentovich, W. Pyzuk
Oleg Lavrentovich
X-ray scattering measurements have been carried out for free-standing, thick . monodomain films of the orthogonal hexatic-B phase. From Fourier analysis of X-scans, 6n-fold-symmetry order parameters were determined and proved to fulfill the scaling relation C6n = C6n+lambdan(n-1). The temperature behavior of C6 and lambda was found nonuniversal when comparing homologues, PIR5 and PIR7, differing in their range of the hexatic phase. The hexatic order parameter varies with the critical exponents 0.25, 0.20 (+/- 0.03), respectively. For comparison results for compound RFL6, of other homologue series, are presented.

Investigation Of The Charge Transfer Properties Of Electrodes Modified By The Spontaneous Adsorption Of Unsymmetrical Dialkyl Sulfides, Minhui Zhang, Mark Anderson
Mark R. Anderson
Electrodes modified by the spontaneous adsorption of unsymmetrical dialkyl sulfides are used to investigate two monolayer properties, structural disorder and solvent compatibility, that may be of importance in determining the ability for faradaic charge transport to occur in the presence of the monolayer. Two groups of dialkyl sulfides are prepared and studied: a purely hydrocarbon dialkyl sulfide with the structure CH3(CH2)17S(CH2)nCH3, where n, = 7,9, and 17, and an acid containing dialkyl sulfide with the structure CH3(CH2)17S(CH2)mCOOH, where m = 7, 10, and 15. Reflection infrared spectroscopy of the hydrocarbon dialkyl sulfide reveals that the monolayer structure is disordered, when …

This paper deals with learnability of concept classes defined by neural networks, showing the hardness of PAC-learning (in the complexity, not merely information-theoretic sense) for networks with a particular class of activation. The obstruction lies not with the VC dimension, which is known to grow slowly; instead, the result follows the fact that the loading problem is NP-complete. (The complexity scales badly with input dimension; the loading problem is polynomial-time if the input dimension is constant). Similar and well-known theorems had already been proved by Megiddo and by Blum and Rivest, for binary-threshold networks. It turns out the general problem …
Effect Of Applied Potential Upon The In Situ Structure Of Self-Assembled Monolayers On Gold Electrodes, Mark Anderson, Marilyn Gatin
Effect Of Applied Potential Upon The In Situ Structure Of Self-Assembled Monolayers On Gold Electrodes, Mark Anderson, Marilyn Gatin
Mark R. Anderson
Polarization modulation Fourier transform infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (PM-FTIRRAS) has been utilized to study the in situ structure of octadecanethiol when adsorbed to gold electrode surfaces and with the application of potential to the substrate. It is found that applied potential has little effect upon the spectrum of the monolayer in the presence of D2O solutions containing 0.10 M NaClO4. The presence of an acetonitrile solution contacting the monolayer leads to small changes in the infrared spectrum relative to that seen in D2O solutions, suggestive of some small disordering of the monolayer caused by the presence of the acetonitrile. With …
Application Of The Quartz Crystal Microbalance To Characterize The Interaction Of Solutes With Modified Interfaces, John Roush, David Thacker, Mark Anderson
Application Of The Quartz Crystal Microbalance To Characterize The Interaction Of Solutes With Modified Interfaces, John Roush, David Thacker, Mark Anderson
Mark R. Anderson
Piezoelectric quartz crystals, modified by the spontaneous adsorption of either 4-aminothiophenol or octadecanethiol, were utilized to investigate the selective interactions that exist between solutes and the surface modification layer. It is found that the exposed amine functionality of the 4-aminothiophenol monolayer increases the sensitivity of the quartz crystal microbalance to phenols relative to the response found at either a crystal modified with an octadecanethiol monolayer or an unmodified quartz crystal. Protonation of the amino group decreases the sensitivity of the 4-aminothiophenol modified crystal toward the phenol solutes, to a level approximately the same as seen for the octadecanethiol monolayer and …
