U/Pb Sphene Date Of Mylonitization Associated With The Proterozoic Laramie Peak Shear Zone, Laramie Mountains, Wy, Phillip Resor, K Chamberlain, A Snoke, C Frost

Phillip G Resor

In this paper, we show that deformation can be dated by combining mesoscopic and microscopic structural observations with an understanding of metamorphic mineral reactions and U-Pb ages of newly grown sphene (titanite). This approach can be used on a variety of rock types that have been deformed at a wide range of metamorphic conditions. In an example from the Proterozoic Laramie Peak shear zone of southeastern Wyoming, a single period of syntectonic sphene growth in sheared mafic dikes is documented both by a strong spatial relationship between deformation and metamorphism and by sphene microtextures. U-Pb analyses of sphene separates give …

Thermodynamics Of A Free Q Fermion Gas, Asim Gangopadhyaya Dec 1993

Thermodynamics Of A Free Q Fermion Gas, Asim Gangopadhyaya

Asim Gangopadhyaya

We study the thermodynamics of a q-fermion gas for complex values of q on the unit circle. Special emphasis is given to the study of the virial coefficients and the specific heat of this gas. In particular, it is shown that if any state can accommodate up to p q-fermions, then the first p virial coefficients of such a gas are the same as that of a gas of free bosons. Explicit expressions for the deviation of higher virial coefficients from the corresponding values for a Bose gas are obtained. Further, as for ordinary fermions, it is shown that the …

Hexagons And Squares In A Passive Nonlinear Optical System, John Geddes, R.A. Indik, J.V. Moloney, Willie Firth

John B. Geddes

Pattern formation is analyzed and simulated in a nonlinear optical system involving all three space dimensions as well as time in an essential way. This system, counterpropagation in a Kerr medium, is shown to lose stability, for sufficient pump intensity, to a nonuniform spatial pattern. We observe hexagonal patterns in a self-focusing medium, and squares in a self-defocusing one, in good agreement with analysis based on symmetry and asymptotic expansions.

A Bayesian Approach To Additive Nonparametric Regression, Michael S. Smith, Robert Kohn Dec 1993

A Bayesian Approach To Additive Nonparametric Regression, Michael S. Smith, Robert Kohn

Michael Stanley Smith

This proceedings paper was the first to suggest using a Gaussian g-prior combined with a point mass to undertake Bayesian variable selection in a Gaussian linear regression model. It also was the first to suggest integrating out the regression parameters and variance in closed form, resulting in an efficient Gibbs sampling scheme. The idea was applied to estimate regression functions in an additive model by using a linear basis expansion for each component function in an additive model. The conference proceeding was eventually published in a slightly tighter form in Journal of Econometrics (1996).

The Variable Elision Of Unstressed Vowels In European Portuguese: A Case Study, David James Silva Dec 1993

The Variable Elision Of Unstressed Vowels In European Portuguese: A Case Study, David James Silva

David Silva

European varieties of Portuguese exhibit a process whereby unstressed vowels, particularly schwa, optionally undergo elision: an item such as idade ‘idea’ can be realized as [ida'd] and para Maria ‘for Maria’ may surface as [prɐmɐrí'ɐ]. While previous research in the study of phonological variation of this sort has typically focused on syntactic, morphological, functional, and segmental factors as the primary linguistic conditions for accurately characterizing variable processes (Guy 1980; Poplack & Walter 1986, among many others), less work has been done investigating the role of prosodic factors in this respect. Yet if one believes (along with Nespor and Vogel 1986, …

Comparison Of Suppression Across Frequencies, Linda M. Thibodeau, Marc A. Fagelson Nov 1993

Comparison Of Suppression Across Frequencies, Linda M. Thibodeau, Marc A. Fagelson

Marc A. Fagelson

Although much research has focused on the temporal, spectral, and intensity relationships between a masker and a suppressor, there has been little attention directed towards relative amounts of suppression in different frequency regions. The purpose of this experiment was to compare the magnitude of suppression at 500 and 2000 Hz in two forward‐masking experiments with seven normal‐hearing persons. In the first experiment, the threshold for a 10‐ms probe was determined as the bandwidth of a 400‐ms masker increased from 0.05 to 1.6 times the probe frequency. Suppression was determined by observing a decrease in threshold when the masker bandwidth exceeded …

Apparent And True Feature Heights In Force Microscopy, Nancy Burnham Jul 1993

Apparent And True Feature Heights In Force Microscopy, Nancy Burnham

Nancy A. Burnham

In a force microscope, the stiffness of the cantilever beam convolutes with the tip‐sample interaction stiffness to influence the data in a systematic way. The analysis presented here relates the measured feature height to the true feature height in the variable force, constant force, and constant force gradient modes of operation. In this way, one can understand previously published data: the enhanced measured atomic corrugation observed in high resolution force microscopy images, its increase with load, and the improved resolution of lateral force images. The correct interaction stiffness can be obtained for use in surface force and mechanical properties studies. …

Quantitative Determination Of Surface Excess By The Semiintegral Method, Susanne Dana, Mathew Jablonski, Mark Anderson Mar 1993

Quantitative Determination Of Surface Excess By The Semiintegral Method, Susanne Dana, Mathew Jablonski, Mark Anderson

Mark R. Anderson

In 1988 Bowling and McCreery reported that the semiintegral of voltammetric data provided an excellent method for the qualitative diagnosis of weak adsortpion of material upon an electrode. This report was important to electroanalytical chemistry because of the difficulty often encountered when trying to identify the presence of weakly adsorbed material and because of the impact that weak adsorption has upon voltammetric response. Many electrochemical analyses are dependent upon the evaluation of voltammetric wave shape, particularly kinetic analyses. Unlike strong adsorption, the presence of weakly adsorbed material does not dramatically and obviously perturb the shape of the voltammetric response; consequently, …

Strength Of Bentonite Water-Well Annulus Seals In Confined Aquifers, Fred Ogden Feb 1993

Strength Of Bentonite Water-Well Annulus Seals In Confined Aquifers, Fred Ogden

Fred L. Ogden

The advantages of bentonite clay for sealing applications are well known. Bentonites have extremely low permeability, do not affect formation water chemistry, and have the ability to swell and deform in response to subsurface changes. The major limitation on the applicability of bentonite for water well annulus sealing is strength. Strength tests conducted in a physical model of a water well identified the expected magnitude of shear strength for several commercially available bentonite well-sealing products. The dependence of bentonite strength in the annulus of a water well on both setting time and borehole geometry is discussed. Force balance calculations for …
